Relgion in Lost Reply to this message
Hey guys,

My name is Matt and i've been posting on these boards since they began over two years ago.

In that time many questions have arisen over the plotline and undercurrent messages of Lost.
One single over-riding theme however; has been that of religion.

These religious allusions vary from connecting the DHARMA logo to the similar DHARMAKARA symbol of Buddhism, to the message of Jack's tattoo, ("He walks amongst us but is not one of us") being a direct Biblical referrence to Jesus Christ.
These are thrown together with episode titles such as "The 23rd Psalm", motifs such as the cross, Eko's stick (Moses blessed stick)and the Bible with a gun hidden in it.
Eko was a fake priest, Charlie was a Catholic, Desmond beleived he was called to be a monk, Sayid prayed to Allah before the crash and Locke is "a man of faith" quoting, "There's got to be something greater."

Eko's stick had Bible verses which tell of a journey of discovery and finding yourself whilst being lost.

Then finally, there is Jacob. A pivotal figure in both the Bible and on the Island. He appears to be a spiritual manifestation of the individual and only reveals himself to those who truly want to see him (Locke, S3 ep23)this is Biblically what the Holy Spirit does (Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). There are also references to Jacob being "loving" and "forgiving". The cover of the Season 3 DVD set has engraved on it, "Jacob Loves You".

I have come to the conclusion therefore that the spirituality in Lost leads to the answers to "The Island"; based on the evidence. This however does not include the numbers (blatantly a man-made psychological experiment) and "Smokey" which is evidently mechanical.

It has also come to my attention that DHARMA, a "scientific" program interfered with the Island, "faith" and thus the "Science VS Faith" clash occured and DHARMA was destroyed through Ben.
However the arrival of new influences (the Losties) causes changes in the spiritual

...environment and thus the battle has started again, evident through the dispute between Jack and Locke in the episode ("Man of Science VS Man of Faith" S1).

Jacob has since made an appearance proving the validity of Locke's faith but at the same time science (the Dharma stations) has better allowed the Losties to understand both the island and each other.

Thus the religious saga continues.

There is much more that I could say but quite simply, the religious allusions on Lost are undeniable and consistant.
For one to say that they love to analyse Lost but dismiss religious assertions due to preconceived biases (this happens on both sides)is to be arrogant and foolish.

When such one-eyed opinions dominate, as seen in boards such as "GOD", theories become influenced by motivations which take away from what we know with certainty.

Lost is just a Tv show, take it as such. It is brilliantly written, well directed and intelligently casted and best of all, causes its viewers to question philosophical elements of life itself.
But remember to question with an open-mind to get beyond your own subconscious, subjective views.

Matt, enjoyed reading your posts. Insightful, comprehensive and to the point. Really interesting. Can't wait to see where they take the religious aspect of the show from here and what it's conclusion will be.

Do you think Jack will now become a man of faith since he saw Locke was right?
