I fear Lost may not be picked up next year by 7. Last week was part 1 of the Sesaon Finale, and was only watched by 464 Thousand people!!! Thats pathetic!!! It was the 13th most watched program of the night, so 12 shows on thursday night had higher ratings (I know it hurts the mind to try and figure out how this is possible, but it is).

If this continues, i think that the 10.30 timeslot will remain, or maybe even 11.30. But it may be dropped completley.

Think back to the pilot episode and the first season. The Pilot was watched by over 2 Million people in Aus. The rest of the season averaged over 1.2 million. The US has not slumped anywhere near as much as we have. In the States the Pilot was watched by 24 Million, last weeks ep figures were 11 Million. And in America Lost is the most recorded or time shifted show on television.

Home and Away gets over 1 Million viewers, and that is 5 nights a week for about 30 weeks. I guess that says quite a lot about the average Aussie TV viewer.

Australia has simply LOST interest with the most emotionally charged, intelligent, in depth, shocking, enthralling and rewarding show on the box.

Quite sad really.

The loss of viewers is due to two things: frustration at lack of answers, and the timeslot change. The second half of season three averaged just over a million viewers at 8.30, whilst the season premiere this year at 9.30 rated 912,000. Before it got pushed to 10.30 it was averaging just under 700,000, but I think if the show had been left at 8.30 it would be up near or around the million mark.

But yes, even the most ardent fan would have to admit a large amount of people stopped watching because they figured they were never going to get any answers. When I watched the pilot episode I found myself hanging to find out what the monster was... four seasons later I still don't know! That doesn't worry me so much because I'm a huge fan, but I can see how that would be annoying to the casual viewer.

For me I'm swinging between anger, maybe even rage at 7s disdain for its viewers, its stupidity for killing Lost by strangulation and its failure to recognise the joys of this wonderful piece of Television. I watched it and the advertisements, I had a regular Lost House party on Thurday nights etc etc. BUT on the other hand I can get it in high def, savour it ON TIME each week, re-watch the bits I didn't grasp, rescreen bits I just missed and not see any ads. So when 7 wonders what happened to its viewers they may one day realize that they didn't just leave - they were pushed away. 7 will be the one that is LOST.

The viewing numbers come from www.mediaspy.org, every day they have the list of programs and their ratings from the night before.

also some people just find it too hard to keep up with a show that you need to watch every episode of and then again to closely watch every detail. i've always loved that sort of show, i never miss an episode of any of the shows i watch. but some people just don't have that sort of commitment, that is how all those law and order and csi shows do so well, you don't have to watch each episode at all, that is how repeats chucked in the middle of a current season are just accepted, the viewers don't even know the difference, they have it on the tv but they are not really watching.

Yeah partly the time slot and partly the slow plot progression. I know alot of people who dont watch anymore simply because they claimed nothing ever happens, and its funny cause Sawyer comments to Jack in ep 12 "didnt you just go running through the jungle with a walkie talkie?"

Season 4 has progressed faster and it wont slow down from here cause the writers know exactly how many eps they have to work with, they only found out during season3.

You seem to forget that a show like LOST doesn't need to worry about ratings, LOST is one of the most bought Television Shows on DVD, thats how a lot of people do it now because they can't watch each episode in order each week like it's needs to be watched. DVD sales is what keeps Family Guy alive and LOST survives Half on DVD Sales and Half on TV Ratings. Stop looking at the negative, also with the pace and brilliance of this Season only both can do better.

Re:Is This The Demise Of Lost? Reply to this message
It might be although judging by the reaction from fans (death threats apparently!) and someone getting a written response from Channel 7 - they probably won't risk the backlash by taking it off air or making the timeslot even later.

Plus, as much as Lost has, heh, lost ratings, it's not exactly a bomb or a failure yet. It's always gonna be a hit and has a VERY sturdy fanbase worldwide. The DVDs sell like hotcakes and as a previous poster said, it's the most recorded show in the US. As much as it sucked that it went to ten thirty, I really don't think 7 is about to give it the axe.

There are other factors to consider -

* With the fast track stuff turning out to be pointless, people are turning to downloading. Not only is this quicker, there's also no commericals every 5 minutes. Plus, you're level with the USA if you download (I only have to wait a day instead of a week now). This would cause ratings to sink but doesn't mean the show itself is "failing" as such. Just television stations suck because they're oblivious to their viewers wants and needs.

*. The written statement posted her a few weeks back from the Channel 7 person said that Lost didn't move back because of ratings but because of CONTENT. Remember Lost originally started out as somewhat of a family show and slowly got darker and darker until a few weeks ago where we saw the execution of a completely innocent 16 year old.

Most of the cast have commented on how there is a lot of bloodshed in the upcoming finale. Quite frankly, I would've agreed with a later timeslot when Ana Lucia and Libby were killed back in season 2. Then when Ben shot Locke. This is heavy stuff and if the new time slot is to protect the kiddies - so be it.

Re:Is This The Demise Of Lost? Reply to this message
jess815, you make excellent points.

A LOT of LOST viewers are children... you're looking at 14-17yrs. The reason? Mind stimulation - it has been proven through psychological studies that children have greater pleasure in stimulating things, where they are made to think of solutions before they occur. Chess is a perfect example... Most chess professionals were fascinated by the game from a young age, and this developed as they did. With a later timeslot, a lot of the kids aren't able to stay up. This is either because their bodies don't allow it, or due to school and parents.

LOST is one of few series that have a plot that leads from first episode to last, and things are revealed at selected points. This means two things: people are either sick of waiting for answers and therefore stop viewing, OR, if they miss a few episodes (like i did in season3 where i had work at the time that lost aired) they dont get back into it because they miss a lot, or simply lose interest (i luckily loved it just as much)

EVERYONE SHOULD:
Watch every LOST episode at the time it airs so LOST doesn't lose ratings. If you cant in fact watch it, turn on the tv and leave it on during LOST.

If you dont have a ratings monotring system installed in your home it does not matter if you are watching it as far as ratings go.

What can the average person do? Well to have an effect you can buy the products or services that are advitised during LOST. Sounds very low but that would make a small difference.

LOST will not be axed:

- It is one of the most brought television shows on DVD.

- One of the most downloaded shows

- It gets enough ratings

- The Merchandise sells

The Show Will last...

Even more so with fans like us, we did a petition and it succeeded, we made a noise and it worked.

Re:Is This The Demise Of Lost? Reply to this message
lost will not get axed it may move to a later timeslot but it will not get axed theres only two more season and htey are also quite short season compaired to previous seasons and other shows. cahnnel will keepit on until the date the ratings arentso low that channel seven has to abbandon ship and cancel it.

and I dont undersand how people can really trust ratings. not everyone has one of those things that count the ratings i dont have one and no one i know has one so thats kind of lame how htey can say that 400 000 people or whatever where watching when there could of been more. i dunno i may be wrong i know very little on how ratings work.

The problem is that while we all love it, it is really hard to watch. you have to discuss it, rewatch it go on the net, etc etc... so you dont miss anything. my mum watched the ep with me when jins gravestone was shown, and it was so hard for her to keep track. i had to keep explaining everything in the ad breaks. i personally adore this show. but i can understand peoples frustrations. i wouldnt be surprised if it does get axed or pushed later. think of a show like buffy, that had a huge fanbase, but it was always on so late. ratings suck basically, but its the way it is.

Re:Is This The Demise Of Lost? Reply to this message
people who watch this show expect everything to be answered in one episode. you have to watch every episode and piece together information from each one and even then youll still be left with lots of questions. its called creative writing. how satisfying would it be if they had it episode with nothing but answers. not very. at the end of the 4th season i cant really think of many questions i need answered. what is the monster? its a big black cloud of smoke that kills people. there you go. of course there are tons of questions that havent been answered, just check http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Unanswered_questions . theres heaps but you wont really learn anything significant from having all of them answered. most of them are pointless

i do agree with that. all i was meaning was that we get that, but people who aren't as hooked expect it to be answered in that ep. like mentioned earlier, csi/ law and order etc. they are shows that can simply be watched. i love the way lost is writen i think its fantastic. but y do u think reality shows do so well? u dont have to think about them at all. and thats what alot of people expect these days.

Home and Away gets over 1 Million viewers, and that is 5 nights a week for about 30 weeks. I guess that says quite a lot about the average Aussie TV viewer.

sad but very true. lost is a show that gets your brain working and the fact that 1 million people sit and watch home and away , doesnt say much for those 1 millon people...sad. feed the brain people, feed the brain and turn off the rubbish.

Re:Is This The Demise Of Lost? Reply to this message
I think that what will eventually sign Lost's death certificate will be the atrocious way that Channel 7 has treated the Lost fans. We have had to put up with numerous time-slot changes, but we also have to put up with being pushed to the side for a few weeks at a time whenever it isnt a high-viewer rating week....eg, we didnt get any episodes of Lost being shown for a couple of weeks before, during and after Easter, and i believe there was at least one or two other occasions this year where we had a break of a couple of weeks. For a show such as Lost, which relies heavily on viewer continuity so we can keep up with the story-lines, this got very tiresome and confusing. The big killer for the show, though, will be the time-slot. Every week, myself and my 2 sons have sat and watched this show...right from the very first episode. However, with the time-slot getting later and moving to 10:30pm, I have had to resort to getting my mother to record it for us and we go up and watch it on the Friday afternoon after school. As mentioned earlier, this show has a massive teenage fan base.....most of who cant stay up till 11:30pm, when it finishes, so they choose to download it off the net instead. If Channel 7 would stop treating its viewers like idiots, they would put Lost back in its proper time-slot of 8:30, and watch the ratings soar!

Re:Is This The Demise Of Lost? Reply to this message
The reason for the breaks in between lost were because of thw writers strike. It went off air in the states for 4 weeks also. They also had the 2 week break between the finale. That is not channel 7's fault, it was just a result of the WGA strike.

Re:Is This The Demise Of Lost? Reply to this message
It wasnt just this year that we have had a series of Lostput on ice for a couple of weeks. It has happened every year....Channel 7 has shunted Lost for a week or two to premier some new "must see viewing" or some other lame reason. It certainly gets taken off every Easter for 2 weeks. I know the writers strike caused problems this year, but it doesnt explain why, in the past years, we have had to put up with our show being held over for a couple of weeks till they get whatever it is they want to show out of the way. It makes it hard to stay wrapped up in the continuation of the story-line.

Re:Is This The Demise Of Lost? Reply to this message
When will Channel 7 stop treating us so casually?? In my earlier posts regarding how they fobbed off us every now and then when they held an episode of Lost over for a week or two, they went and did the same thing last night. Different show, so maybe I may be talking off topic here, but take last nights Criminal Minds as an example. They talk up the new season of Criminal Minds starting....give us one new episode last week, and then what did we get stuck with last night but a double episode REPEAT from last season. I guess with the State of Origin on tv it wasnt going to be a big ratings night for 7.....but not everyone likes football!! What they did last night, in holding off the new episode of Criminal Minds, is EXACTLY what they do to Lost. They mess with the episodes, and its hard to keep the storylines straight in your head when they do this.
