My question at the moment is:
Considering that we know Richard Alpert can time travel, is he from the past, and traveling to the future, or from the future, traveling to the past?
What do you think? |

Considering that we have seen Des time travel, Ben turn up at places (Tunisia) asking what date it is, I think that it is safe to say that Richard is probably time travelling (still not 100% sure). I also heard people calling him "Ageless Richard", but I seems more likely that he seems ageless as he keeps turning up to these places in time and doesn't look any different. My question is why and how/when did he go to and from - confused yet? I am!!!
Example - Did Richard go back in time when Locke was born from 2004 after Locke landed on the island as they knew he was special, therefore trying to change Locke's future by getting him to go to the school???? |

| Out there or not, it has been confirmed by the creators that time travel is definitely happening in LOST. I was one of the biggest advocates of the theory that Richard was ageless and one of the original Hostiles on the island before even Hanso's boat crashed there. But now I'm inclined to agree that the only reason he seems ageless in so many different time periods is because he can travel through time. He may have gone to all the places we've seen him in in the space of a few hours for all we know. I say we need a Richard backstory in the next season |

Being 'ageless' is stupid. This is no sci-fi series.
We have seen Desmond time travel in a sense. He was able to move from the present, to his past. Richard Alpert is possibly able to do the same, but to a concentrated amount, where he can time travel as many years back as he needs to. Or, of course, he can move by demand.
We see Ben landing in the Sahara. He is clearly surprised as to where he is. Alpert though, can decide where to end up, and when. |

For those who think it is time travel, we have only seen (and been told by TPTB) time travel of the conciseness to the body's state back in time. Desmond's mind went back into his 1996 body, his whole body didn't travel back. So if keeping along these lines, Richard's mind would have to travel back into his body's state back when John was young. Richard was still a grown man, so that may mean there was time travel of the mind, but Richard still doesn't age.
In reference to Ben ending up in Tunisia, this may not have been time travel, but rather teleportation.
I don't claim to know what the hell is going on, but I think we will find out more about the time travel and Richard Alpert when the final two hours of season 4 air, or maybe in season 5. When ever we do find out, The Orchid station will be a big player in this part of the Lost mythology. |

| You'd think John would have recognized Richard Alpert in season 3, when they were speaking to one another ... in the episode where Ben tries to persuade Locke to kill his father. |

"Time travel is a bit out there dont you think even for lost"
I think considering the fact that Locke has to MOVE the island, time travel isn't really "out there" |

I thought that too - that someone like Locke would have recognised Richard! I mean, that day when he came to 'interview' him as a child seemed like a pretty important moment for Locke. It started his life of disappointment! But then, when Richard gives him Sawyer's file he doesn't seem to recognise him at all.
Anyone think this was a screw up from the writers? Or is there a reason Locke doesn't remember him? |

| How could Locke have been in that flashback? 8? How many people remember an innocuous event like that day when they are then 50 years plus as Locke is? I mean, no matter how important that day is to the story of LOST, to that kid, it's just another day. I don't remember specific days from when i was 15 and that was 6 years ago. I don't think the writers stuffed up. I'd say they stuffed up if he DID recognise Richard from that episode of season 3. |

I agree, I can hardly remember who I saw/did a week ago, let alone meeting someone for 10 minutes when I was 6! I don't think it was a writer stuff up. Also maybe Richard is time travelling and went back in time after seeing that Locke killed his father (even though he didn't - Saywer did) to recruit him earlier, as they realised that Locke is their true leader. Therefore this moment in 6 year old Lockes memory wouldn't be there when he first met Richard. Am I making any sense???
This is similar to the bit about Charlie not being able to swim for the first 2 seasons, but at the end of Season 3 he can swim - someone went back into his past to ensure he jumped into the pool when his Dad was teaching him how to swim (some people think it was Des?). |

| It has to be time travel. maybe this just seems obvious to me but when des' consciousness travelled forcibly through time and we saw the experiment...it was at least 10 years ago. so doesn't it then logic that perhaps given that dharma lived on an island known for its freaky time properties they may have learnt to control it? i.e.- the technology evolved from then...to time travel of the physical body. |

lol @ beldarren2408. ive been through a couple posts n seen u rite that. give up. no one agrees.
if u havent already read my theory of nivea ill briefly exlpain. richard hasnt been time travelling n heh as been aging. Nivea used to fund the dharma initiative but then hanso offered them more money so he got to back then. nivea was dropped. richard alpert was nivea's main contact at the island. richard then took the iniative to destroy the dharma group n recoup nivea for themselves. this is y he doesnt seem to age.

This is going to sound odd, and I am sorry if someone else has psoted this, I didn't read them all, but what if the man we saw in Loch's flash backs isn't Alpert. Sure he looks like him, he sounds like him and all the other stuff, but could there be a chance that it is not him.
And I thought that if you travelled in time you would die from it. Have people been forgetting that we have seen time travel before, with Daniel's rat. and later it died. So, if Alpert were to keep traveling throught ime, why doesn't he die? Just putting it out there. |

| You only die if you don't have a constant. I think it's pretty safe to assume that if Richard is in fact time travelling, then he knows what he is doing and has a constant. |

| But I thought you only needed a constant if you were caught in a time loop and you couldn't do anything about it. Like Desmond. He was stuck in a a "time trap" (can't think of a better way to put it). He spoke to Penny (his constant) and got out of it. |

| mmhmm. and besides, that was when it was accidental timetravel...isn't it possible the DI figured out a way to control it, without requiring a constant?? |
