I was wondering that too. Why are they moving rocks around? Kate said to Jack it's something 'big'. Wonder what it could be....something for HIM?

perhaps some sort of archelogical dig, cos remember at the end of season two, when sayid and sun were on the boat they saw the big stone statue of a foot with 4 toes! so perhaps the others are searching for more finds.

That foot was right on the coast of the main island. Kate & Sawyer are moving rubble on Alcatraz.

You've got a good point there. Maybe theyre trying to make the island a civilization because the island/that area has the whole healing powers thing.

I don't think they're digging and searching for the fifth toe or another rock structure, but building it instead. Similiar to the process the Pyramids were made from.

They are building a runway.

But that sounds good that maybe they are looking for the missing toe from that statue.
