Some character names were intended to reflect personalities, for example Locke and Desmond named after the philosophers John Locke and David Hume. Ethan Rom was an anagram of 'other man'.
Benjamin being the son of Jacob is interesting, but I don't think it will end up being particularly relevant to the story. |

My own weird theory on Sawyer's name. Have y'all listened to the lyrics of Rush's song Tom Sawyer?
"A modern-day warrior
Mean mean stride,
Todays tom sawyer
Mean mean pride."
"And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society."
The whole song fits....
Just a thought :-) |

Hi! I have thought about the significance of the character's names as well, and found your posts interesting! I just thought I'd throw in some more interpretations.
I find it interesting that Jack and John are two versions of the same name and those two characters have been destined to oppose each other from the very beginning.
Jack's last name is Shepherd, the meaning of which is both obvious and applicable. John's last name is Locke, which makes me wonder just what the lock is containing, and what is the key?
A sawyer is a carpenter, and with the show's frequent religious imagery, I'm sure that we're meant to be reminded of another famous carpenter. I wonder if James will end up sacrificing himself so that others may live.
The only Walt that came to mind when I first started contemplating the significance of names was Walt Disney, who ALSO made pictures come to life (although I don't know if Disney ever did a cartoon with polar bears).
Ben's last name is Linus, who was the patron saint of lost causes.
As for new character Daniel Faraday, the Wikipedia definition of a Faraday cage or Faraday shield is "an enclosure formed by conducting material, or by a mesh of such material. Such an enclosure blocks out external static electrical fields. Faraday cages are named after physicist Michael Faraday, who built one in 1836." |

My research says that the name Jacob means "supplanter".
"Jacob (Hebrew: ×ַעֲקֹ×, Standard YaÊ¿aqov Tiberian YaÊ¿ÄqÅá¸; Arabic: ÙعÙÙب, YaÊ¿qÅ«b; "holds the heel"), also known as Israel (Hebrew: ×ִשְ×רָ×Öµ×, Standard Yisraʾel Tiberian YiÅrÄʾÄl; Arabic: اسرائÙÙ, IsrÄʾīl; "Struggled with God"), is the third Biblical patriarch."
This is from Wikipedia.
"The meaning of the name Jacob is Supplanter"
âverb (used with object)
1. to take the place of (another), as through force, scheming, strategy, or the like.
This ia from dictionary.com
Make up your own minds, peoples. I'm going to bed.
See ya, Sarah |
