I just got wondering (by reading another thread)
If Des sailed around the island, trying to leave, would he have sailed "around" (covering the entire circumference of the island) he would have surely seen the other island?
Or maybe he just sailed in a straight line on the other side and ended up being turned around to come back to the island?
Makes you wonder, because if had gone around the island, and seen the other island then he's keeping it quiet pretty well from the other survivors. Hmmm... |

I am still wondering how we know for sure and that the losties know for sure they are on an island instead of a costal area of the mainland somewhere, either Australia or the US. None of them have gone all the way around the thing.
Just my thoughts...

true eh, if they havnt gone all the way round to see the other island then the one they are on must be pretty big....
how an why they havnt tried to go all the way around their island is a mystery to me.....surely at some point some one would do it out of boredom eh!
i know sayid went to do it an then ran into rousseaux, but since then our losties have lost interest in it??... |

When Sayid found Rousseau, she told him about the Others, which the Losties had not known about previously. In the very same episode that Sayid arrived back at camp, Ethan abducted Claire and Charlie, and in the following episode, Jack, Locke, Kate, and Boone gave chase unsuccessfully.
Naturally, after that, the survivors were wary of going too far into the jungle or around the Island for fear of the Others, except in the case of a necessity, like their visit to the Black Rock, the Hatch, Henry Gale's grave, etc. |

Reasons why Desmond didn't see the other island:
1. He was drunk (as mentioned above)
2. He sailed past it at night
3. The second island is very close to the main island. If Desmond was more than a couple of kilometres away, it would just look like part of the bigger island
4. Desmond believed he had left the main island behind. This means he was too far away to see the main island, and therefore couldn't see the smaller one either
5. Put yourself in Desmond's position. If you saw the other island, would you automatically think 'Oh look, that must be where the Others are hiding'? |
