I have two theories about Desmond from last night's episode, "Flashes Before Your Eyes", about when Desmond supposedly went back in time.
1. Desmond really does go back in time, somehow and for whatever reason. The old woman who sells him the ring has also gone back in time, obviously, and is experienced in time travel, and if Desmond doesn't push the button, bad stuff will happen. When Desmond is h1t by the cricket bat he dies, which for some reason causes him to go back to the isand, where he is naked.
Desmond then lives on the island for a while, hears Locke's speech, then Charlie is struck by lightning and killed.
Eventually Desmond dies, which sends him back to when he is naked. He saves Charlie from the lightning who then drowns.
Desmond eventually dies again and is now living these events for at least the third time, he saves Charlie twice but has now concluded that however many times he saves Charlie, the "Universe" will get its way and keep killing Charlie.
The main thing that does not support this theory is that the button was not pushed, but nobody died. Perhaps only because Desmond turned the key, which was the important thing.
2. Desmond does not really go back in time. He hallucinates, which is caused by whoever is in control of the island. But there are multiple people, who are in disagreement. One or some want Charlie dead, while others don't.
The person or people who want to save Charlie cause Desmond to see images of Charlie being struck by lightning, drowning etc, so Desmond can save him. The person or people who want to kill Charlie cause Desmond to hallucinate about his past, and about the woman, which causes Desmond to conclude that he can never save Charlie, in an attempt to get Desmond to follow the example of the woman, and just let Charlie die. These people then somehow attempt to kill Charlie with lightning and drowning, which are obviously thwarted by Desmond... |

However many times these people try to kill Charlie, Desmond will have visions about it and save or try to save Charlie, but will be convinced that the "Universe" is trying to kill him, when it is really the "Island", or those in control of it.
The main thing that does not support this theory is Locke's speech. If Desmond's visions of the future are to save Charlie, how would he know about Locke's speech. That makes this theory unlikely, but still possible. |

| u know how the lady wanted him 2 go 2 the island so he can press the button.......... if he didn't go back 2 the island then the other guy in the hatch wouldn'have been killed while fixing desmands boat( the boat wouldn't of been there) so he would of kept pressing the button and the plane wouldn't of crashed!!!!!!! although if that did not happen there would be no show!!!!! nice 1 desmand!!!! kind of???? |

I think there's something about Des being a loner. The monastery, sailing on his own, stuck down the shaft once Kelvin was killed. He's a bit under the "other's" radar, if you get my meaning.
The whole show seems to revolve around working together as a group, including our Losties. Remember Jack's speech? He doesn't seem to want to integrate that much.
By the way, I've asked this before, but can anyone tell me how long he was down the shaft for, once K was killed? |

| A month or so, the day Kelvin died was the day the plane crashed (Because no-one pressed the button & that crashed the plane), and the survivors talk about how long theyve been on the island a few eps before they open the hatch. |

| hmmm... interesting...didn't he spend about the same time in the monastery when taking his vow of silence. Maybe training for the future..! Could it be that someone else is able to see the future and manipulate events, as well as Des! I suppose it's logical to think that Hanso has rivals, tho' not necessarily any better...! Cool to think that Des may be a Hanso rival mole! |

ok I got a theory Post this on your message boards. I believe it has to do with Quantum Mechanics & the principles of relativity. Ok in Quantum mechanics there are three Forces that affect how atoms react to one another, Electromagnetic , strong force which binds the nucleolus of an Atom and a weak force which allows other molecules to join << that quantum mechanics as i understand it.
bear with me
general relativity is the principles einstien came up with to describe how gravity, time and space come together
ok these are two fields of science which do not agree with each other, the rules of relativity do not apply in the world of quantum mechanics and vice versa
einstien went to his death trying to combine these two factions of science. he was trying to make a mathematical equation that would combine these two areas into one
This would be the theory of everything
ok now suppose the dharma institute finished what einstien started, they would have the power to apply the wacky laws of quantum physics but on a general relativity scale
so a much larger scale
eg: an Atom will disappear and reappear for no apparent reason. you can start with one atom and end up with two identical this also opens up theory in a parallel universe theory
where does the atom go and how can you end up with two instead of one. How can an Atom suddenly change course without anything touching or affecting it
now this is the theory
if you knew the Theory of everything, which is the science that defines every experience in your life
and you could put that theory to practical use
you could make two identical planes crash at the same time but at different places
because one plane would be from a parallel universe
when Desmond went into his past he didn't really his conscious shifted into another universe apparently the same one that the plane came from or he would not have ended up on the island

| hello fellow losties. Some things dont add up with the time travel . i noticed jack made a comment on the day the chopper took off from the island to the pilot frank saying that he cant believe he hasnt seen a game in 100 days. Now if they crashed on the island on the 22 sept 2004 add 100days to that then that would make it say the 31st dec 2004 (this is assuming that jack has not seen a game since they crashed)Now they did not hear from desmond and sayid for twenty four hours after they left.but did you notice the calander on the freighter and they said it was dec 24 christmas eve (desmond said this too penny too) So this means that the chopper flight actually went back in time 1 week doesnt it ?????? does this mean that time on the island is a week in front or is it just a randon time travell every time they go back on forth from the island.. also if desmond could travell back in time to 1996 does this mean that when he went up to charlie in the street playing his guitar was that part of the same time travel trip when he found danial fariday and what about when charlie was a boy learning to swim at the pool was desmond time travelling back then. your thoughts on this would be great cause i think i am on to some thing if all the characters can time travell how long have they really been on the island and how many times are they all on some life repeat thing. they could even be the original natives on the island but evolved. sorry brain taking over now. your thoughts please........ |

| i think he did not go back in time nor did he hallucinate i think he was still on the island but he changed what happened in his life and Smokey made him change his past also the name of the episode is FLASHES before you eyes what Smokey does plus they is that picture in the back ground when Desmond goes sees mr widmore that is a polar bear and the word namasta and that person that tells Desmond about how life corrects itself (what ever)looks like the person who asks if jack knows what his tattoos mean |

| i think desmond does go back in time not in physically with his presenty body but his mind does goes back to 1996 to his body back then thats why he blacks out. more interesting to me is the time difference on how long it took to get back to the ship. i do recall jack saying that about a game. really interesting i think |
