Hi i have had the implanon implant since august 06 and have had nothing but problems with it. For the first month it was ok, no periods except a couple of days after insertion then nothing. The second month the problems started, erratic bleeding awful period pains, head aches, very tender and soar breasts and a soar arm! I have a disease call lupus and can only have certain contraceptives as it effects my disease. But yet this has effected it worse than any other as my body is going crazy. But over the last few days my breasts are more tender and look like they have grown, my tummy has swollen and gone hard i feel sick all the time my periods are more erratic and light than ever? anyone had these sudden changes? I am hopefully getting the implant out on Friday as i have had enough! I have read that there are side effects after removal can anyone tell me how long the last?

Thanx i would appreciate and help given xx

Hi a_killers_instinct_au ... I had my Implanon taken out on 30 Nov 06 and I STILL haven't had a period. I had my Implanon in for exactly 2.5yrs but took it out early due to side-effects. I had 2 friends with different cases regarding Implanon. One friend said she didn't get her period for over a year! The second friend fell pregnant the day after having her Implanon out. So ... I guess everyone is different. I'm going back to my doctor tomorrow to find out if anything else is wrong as 9 weeks is pretty late for a period. Though, I never once had my period for the entire 2.5 yrs I had Implanon in - not even spotting.

shannonlepla - The side effects to chemicals used in contraceptives are synthetic hormones; the side effects are NOT in their heads. It is proven medical science the chemicals cause depression, emotional liability, acne, weight gain etc. Chemicals in synthetic hormones affect the serotonin receptors in the brain, again proven medical science. Everyone is different, hence such as those people who use chemical brain altering substances such as speed, heroin, or other prescription medicines; some can use for years without any side effects and others have immediate brain altering occurrences. You are one who has seemingly had no negative side effects from Implanon, which is fantastic but please do not condemn those it has affected. The negative results are real and are something to be aware of and cautious when using any chemicals. People naturally search for answers when something goes wrong in their life hence why there are so many negative reports on this web site.

Re:Implanon - side effects during Reply to this message
The bleeding can be just as much of a problem as the hormones. I never bled at all for the 2 years I had it in, now it has been out for 2 months and I still haven't got a period. I put on 20kg over the time I had the Implanon in - but since taking it out I have lost 6kg in the 2 months. I think you are lucky if you don't have any side effects - but everyBODY is different.

To be honest, i think its all in your head. You hear one horror story then all the girls come out and say they're suffering from the same thing, only because they idea has been put their head. Yes, the bleeding can be a problem but i'm unsure of how people have put on weight, gotten headaches and felt moody. I've had mine for 7 months now and if anything i'm lighter and feel the same. Stop blaming the implanon solely on your emotional problems, of course as women your emotions are going to be up and down. Thats normal, thats hormonal.

Re:Implanon - side effects during Reply to this message
Yes it will itch, only be really worried if goes red or yoy get a rash, mine was itchy from time to time but after 2 years after terrible mood swings getting my period so often and the weight gain I took the thing out last year it was the best thing I have ever done but you may be different, I always thought I was losing my mind, my mood swings were everywhere, one minute I was happy then the next thing i was crying over little thigs and then angry, I didn't think that it was the implanon until 2 years later. I also always used to get colds and my asthma always played up that was another side affect from it, now I'm much better and hoping to conceive soon fingers cross, if you have these symptoms don't keep it in do yourself a favour and remove it cause it will drive you crazy.

The main reason they say to put them in when you have a period is so that they can be sure you are not pregnant when the implant goes in. Also the level of hormone put out is not enough to give you a false result on a pregnancy test

Re:Implanon - effects during Reply to this message
Hey peeps.

I'm 16, and have had my implanon in for about 2 months now. I have had a constant light period for a month now, and still going.

I have also put on weight, and have been very emotional and frequently depressed, even a little bit suicidal at times. But this quickly goes away.

Also, whenever I go swimming in the ocean, or in a pool the skin on my whole body except my face, goes bright red. My knuckles, knees and elbows also go white whenever I move them. This makes me feel lighted headed, as if I'm going to faint.
So I'm thinking the implanon has affected my circulation.

...Has this happened to anyone else?

It's very irritating, itches and hurts. We have a pool and it's the middle of Summer. And I can't swim.

I also have a constant slight headache. Which is irritating also.

Also, the constant light bleeding is a pain in the bum.

I'm thinking of waiting at least 6 months before getting the implanon removed.

Also, I was just wondering. Do pregnancy tests work if you take them whilst you have the implanon in?

Because, don't home pregnancy tests measure the amount of progestorone you have in your system.. and the implanon is putting progestorone into your system?

Just a little think that confused me..

The doctor said it should work straight away if you put it in when you have your period, or if you dont have your period wait a week.

Thats what he told me anyway... :]

Re:Implanon - side effects after removal Reply to this message
Hi, I experienced this as well. My arm swelled up and I had a really nasty rash. I had my Implanon taken out on November 30, it is now January 10 and I STILL have a scar there and I tried really hard not to scratch it. I am not sure whether it was the alcohol used in the swab or something else. The itching lasted about 2 weeks. Also - I still haven't had a period yet, does anyone have a rough guide as to how long it takes before you should start getting your periods again? I want to start the mini-pill but can't until I get my period. Any info would be greatly appreciated xxx

Re:Implanon - side effects after removal Reply to this message
I had my implanon removed 4 days ago and have had on and off headaches not too dissimilar to being dehydrated! (despite drinking water like a fish) The wound is slightly itchy too... which is driving me up the wall!

Initially I was very please with implanon as my first month was period-free. Then it was sporatic bleeding which was rather annoying as it would arrive unannouced - unlike the usual cramps etc. I had it in for 1 year and 8 months but the last 6 months was one constant period so much so I was getting dizzy at the gym from blood lost! I realize it affects different women differently and it's a God-sent for those forgetful folks who have a hard time remembering to take the pill (such as yours truly) but given its effects of late, I can't say I will be going back to it anytime soon.

Though I do wish all those with successes with Implanon well!

Re:Implanon - effects during Reply to this message
Hi guys,
I had an implanon rod put in 5 months ago, I have found that I am really short tempered with some things and I have no patience whatsoever for people. I am fine most of the time unless something has happened to irritate me then it just really gets under my skin and I have to breathe deaply to let it go. This only happens every now and then, all other times, I love it. My sexual drive hasnt decreased its probably increased. And because I have started going to the gym and watching what I eat I have lost 2 kilos. I am getting married in May though, and am contemplating taking it out... just so I can completely chill and relax and not let things get to me, like they do when I have the rod in.
Im also thinking of trying for babies on my honeymoon, its really comforting to know and to read all of your comments it has helped me distinguish these things that I am actually feeling.

Re:Implanon - effects during Reply to this message
Hi guys, weemee has created another forum titled 'implanon - trying for a baby' for those trying to conceive, which I have found helpful also. (this post there also)

I got my implant in March 06 and had no period the entire time (except for 1 day of spotting, but generally none). I had it out on 7 Nov and was told by my Dr that my cycle would return to normal within 48 hours! Little did he know of this forum.

AF came 27 Nov suprisingly, was expecting a wait, had to get the tampons out for the first time in months! (lovely). The ovulating strips were very inexpensive so I tried used 2 and on the 2nd day it went positive, I was ovulating on day 15. I am very relaxed about the whole thing and had no idea how to check CM. This was almost cheating to see when I ovulate and kind of fun when it did go positive, I was very unsure when and if I would ovulate so soon after implant removal, considering no period for so long.

My Dr also rec folic acid, which I am taking too...

I had the implanon removed over a week ago and i have found a doctor that is really helpful. My partner and I have been trying over the past week and I asked the doctor today when should I expect to see my periods and he said you may not get one if you conceive succesfully. He recommended I start taking folic acid and wished me luck. I asked him about ovulation tests and he said I would not need to worry about that just yet. Fingers crossed I find out in 6 weeks i am pregnant.

Re:Implanon - effects during Reply to this message
Hi ladies
Well it has been over 3 weeks now since I have had the implanon removed. Still getting cramps and dizzy spells, no sign of AF and have been monitoring my CM, still dry - no change. I have never wanted AF so much in all my life. My husband and I were not going to try until next year (then we got excited and decided to start trying the day I got it removed), I am getting really anxious now. I am fit and healthy (exercise an hour most days), WHAT IS GOING ON??????.

Re:Implanon - effects during Reply to this message
Yes, do stay positive liza_001, I was the same only two weeks ago - completely preoccupied with my cycle and symptoms. It's still early days for me too of course, though I am bit more relaxed this week (before AF I was so moody and tense!). Providing that I did in fact ovulate when I think I did, I'm just going to time BD'ing based on CM and see how I go for a few months. If I don't fall pg by Feb, then I'll perhaps test to see if I'm ov'ing.(Trying very hard to be relaxed about this). I started to chart my temp while I had Imp in, and then thought - hang on, this isn't a REAL cycle, so stopped. I started again when I had it out but it was all over the place (my timing was everywhere), so I've put it in the 'too hard basket' for now. You watch - if nothing by Feb I'll be obsessed with it!
It is disheartening to hear of women waiting so long for thier cycle to return to normal, but I figure, if that happens to me, at least I'm forewarned (thanks to this forum) and can takes steps to help myself. I can't imagine not having this info and wondering what on earth is going on with me!

If anyone would care to reply to this little survey, it would be appreciated:

DID you or did you NOT have your periods during Implanon, AND how long before you got them again after having Implanon removed?

Re:Implanon - effects during Reply to this message
Hi tizianateresa. Yes I would also be very interested to know. The cramps have stopped, but I am still feeling a little dizzy every now and then. I have been tracking my temp since removal, but it has stayed the same (around 36.4), not sure though what my normal body temp was before removal (wish i had have checked). I really hope that everything goes back to normal quickly, as its all I can think about now!! It gets a bit disheartening reading some of the stories, but I am trying to keep a positive attitude about it all. Will keep you posted.
