Implanon is guaranteed to work for 3 years, it has had many clinical trials which show that it often works for 5 years, however to ensure that it remains a very effective contraceptive, they say it should be changed every 3 years.
The hormone levels may be reduced after 2 years which is why you are experiencing symptoms now, however it is still an effective contraceptive. It is very normal to get bleeding, so you have been very lucky to last so long without it!
If you are worried and need reassurance then talk to your doctor. And the worst part about getting it out is the needle! It's all smooth sailing from there. |

| Hi, I've had my implanon in for 2 years in April... For the first 2 weeks I had constant bleeding but other then that it has been a sympton free, period free and pain free 2 years... That is until the last few days. I have just started getting cramps and light patchy bleeding. Im wondering if maybe it has run out and I need to get it replaced. (a little nervous about getting it out) What are your thoughts? |

Psnocom,
Implanon does not have any effect on the growth of the baby. It alters the hormones to prevent ovulation and to change cervical mucous to make it harder for sperm to reach an egg if ovulation did occur. So don't stress - if you fall pregnant there is no risk of birth defects to your baby. |

I have had implanon for 7 years (i'm on my 3rd implant now).
I am getting it removed this week and after reading the forum here realize some of my problems may have been caused by it. Severe migraines which used to be 1-2 a month now 3 times a month for days at a time non-stop, a lot of weight gain over 20kg and moodiness but more on the first insertion I have the mood swings under control.
I am not too worried about falling pregnant once removed my concern is that if I do will it have any effect of the baby? Anyone have feedback regarding birth defects etc? I don't know whether we should be using protection for the next few months to avoid falling pregnant if there are such concerns. You're feedback would be appreciated!
Despite the side effects I still think it was a great decision for me, not having to think about contraception for 3 years, de-creased my period and pains. It is only now with the 3rd insertion things are getting a little unbearable!
Also, being a long term user I don't mind answering any questions you may have...just let me know.
Thanks! |

Hi Hannah
Since joining site in Sept. 2008 and occasionally reviewing it I can sympathize with your issue relating to panic attacks. My one and only entry to date was to introduce my then only side effect of "mild" alopecia .... that was nearly 6 months ago. Since then every day my hair has fallen out, I am now nearly bald and wear a wig. I blame the implant (small print on leaflet affects 1 in 100 women - pretty high statistics!). Apart from that since early December I too have been suffering from pains in my chest, my heart continually pounding and more recently difficulty in controlling my breathing - anxiety/hyper-ventilation has been diagnosed. Maybe the implant has struck me with another side effect to deal with!? I know how you are feeling, it is awful you feel totally out of control of your body and when you are struggling to breathe panic really does set in! Hang in there something called "tapping" has been recommended by my reflexologist. I have training soon and hope to be able to control my anxiety/attacks soon. Try contacting your local reflexologist and see if they are able to help you. Good Luck! |

Hi all,
Just new to this board, thought I would try and get some advice from anyone in the same situation.
I had my implanon removed about 6 weeks ago, (it was my 2nd - having been in for about 4 years) and got my period almost straight away. My husband and I are trying to have a baby and I am a little disheartened by many of your stories. My doctor said most women return to normal cycles within a few days (which was the main reason I chose implanon for contraception), however I have been having my period since removal every 2 weeks (which is damn annoying for starters), so obviously I am not ovulating. I have been following with ovulation tests which have not come up positive yet.
Has anyone had a similar experience with irregular periods after removal? Also has anyone tracked their ovulation to find out when they began normal ovulation? I have read that most women begin ovulating within 3 months of removal.
Thanks for your help! |

hi, i had the implanon removed on dec 16th 08. haven't had a period yet but have had all the pregnancy symtoms, feeling sick, backache, headache, i have done a couple of preg test but have come back neg. i do believe that implanon does give you really bad side effects after removal, i spoke to my doctor which said this was unsual but i have been feeling awful for the past 5 weeks, sick, dizzyness, out of source, backache and really bad headaches.
don't think i am pregnant for a minute, but do have a friend who got caught after 4 weeks removal so it is possible.
good luck if you are trying x |

| I would advise against it. Ever since I had mine put in, I've had atrophic vaginitis. Itching and soreness for no reason. This usually only effects menopausal women and I'm only 26. Not fun. |

| I am currently on the Implanon. The product has been fairly good to me, with minor cramps here and there. I've had it for a little over a year now, and have yet to have a period. That really worries me, because I'm getting it removed in a month so that me and my husband can start our family. I don't want it to take YEARS for me to get pregnant. What should I do? |

Oh my goodness, I thought I was going mad. I had Implanon removed 2 days ago and was placed back on the pill. The following day I was really emotional and bursting into tears for no reason. I still feel such despair and hopelessness.
I went to the surgery where I had it removed, and the doctor said he would be surprised that I started to feel this way so quickly, but that it affects everyone differently.
My parents are really worried about my mental state, and to be honest I am too. I just want to feel better.
I never felt depressed on Implanon, never had PMS/PMT and had pretty level moods the whole time I had it (removed due to painless but long bleeding).
Anyone else felt this bad after Implanon removal? |

Hi Louise,
I had to reply to your message as I have been experiencing many of the symptoms you mention in your post(!) :(
I am 26 and have had my Implanon since 2006. Since then I have been suffering with: Depression, mood swings, aggression, severe anxiety, panic attacks, acne, no libido, hair loss, greasy hair and have generally been feeling like I am going mad... (The Pill did the same to me too.)
My appointment for removal is booked Monday, and I really cannot wait. My poor (long suffering) partner has stood by me through all of this, but I fear that if I do not get better soon then the strain Implanon has put on our relationship will become too much for him/us to bear...
I plan to go natural like you say, as I think my poor weary body needs a break.
I have gone from being a positive, bubbly, outgoing girl with a curvy body and great skin - to a sickly, withdrawn, anxious person... a shadow of myself really.
Implanon may work for some, but please girls - read up about the side effects before you get one. Implanon nearly ruined my life, don't let it do the same to you. |

| Hi everyone. I had the Implanon in for three years after the birth of my first child and it was removed in October. After reading these boards I was scared that it would take ages to fall pregnant. I am happy to say that after two cycles, I am now nearly 5 weeks pregnant! For all who are ttc, have faith that your body WILL return to normal. |

| im 28, mum of three..had mine removed today after finally figuring out what on earth was wrong with me... Sadness, depression, going mad, agressive, low sex drive. The pill did the same to me. Ive had implanon in 14 months and am glad to make this decision!! It almost ruined our marriage. I will go natural and give my tired body a break from all the rubbish thats been flowing through it for the past 6 years. Take it out girls....!!! |
