Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
Hi there.

When I was 16 yrs old I started to suffer from moderate acne. I was put on Diane 35 to treat my acne and it completely cleared my skin. I remained on this pill for 9 years until suddenly my skin started to break out again (even while I was still on the Pill!). I decided to take a natural approach – I went off the Pill and started to regularly see a Naturopath for alternative methods to try and cure my acne.
I have tried multiple types of vitamins with detox diet programs. I had testing done to determine the levels of my hormones which revealed I had very high amounts of Estrogen. I have now been off the Pill for 12 months and my skin is still not completely clear. My breakouts are all along my jawline which indicates it is a 'hormonal' thing.

Other methods I have tried include Dual Yellow Laser treatments. I have also tried 3 different brands of skincare products. I am definitely no expert with treating Acne but I have had a lot of experience with it. I can completely understand how upsetting it is on your self esteem and confidence.

From my experience I believe there is no cure for acne. I really believe it is a part of our lifestyle and the ‘Western’ society we will in. If you think back to hundreds of years ago before chemicals, pollution, packaged foods, medication were introduced into this world I am sure that acne was not an issue at this time.
I am now at the stage where I am considering going back on the Pill. I will need to speak to my doctor about what type would be suggested for my skin now as I believe my hormones have changed since I was on Diane35 12 months ago when I started to break out. I suggest you talk to your doctor about the type of Pill that would be suitable for you as I have learnt that 1 specific treatment or Pill might work for one person but that does not mean it will work for you. It is definitely a hormonal problem.

I wish I had an answer to cure acne but I don’t and I don't believe there will eve ...

I am experiencing the same problem, my parents are in the midst of a divorce and my skin has gone crazy, its spotty and oily, and i also feel your pain of crying all the time, it is emotionaly draining feeling bad/insecure all the time. i used to have PERFECT skin, like i cant even explain it, and i went on estelle and it cleared it up, but then i went off it and my skin got bad again, so alas i went back on it, only it made everything worse second time round :( i feel lost and annoyed, i dont know what works anymore, im desperate to try a new pill. what pill are you using for your skin now?
a reply would be very kind

I am 20 and have been taking Estelle for a year and a half now. A pharmacist told me that she had used this one for back acne and it had completely cleared it up. I had quite bad acne on my face and occasionally a little on my back, which is why I tried this pill. My face has only just cleared up now(however I think the pill is unrelated), but my back has been completely smooth since. Hope this helps.

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
Hi there I am wondering if anyone used Brenda 35 and ceased using it, only to have after 3 months to break out with acne over body as well as neck and face? If so, how long did it take to get under control and back to normal?

Thanks

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
just read some of the other comments below & this lady that calls herself "Dr. Kate", just because you can put "dr" in front of your name doesn't mean you know everything..
you list the causes of acne & say that we have complete control - this is not true!
acne is a hereditary disease
yes perhaps some people can control it but there is NO CURE!
for most people it runs in the family and it is absolute hell
i have been to some doctors and at times to "treat" my acne i have been told to swim in the ocean what a load of bull
i think medication is the best way - roaccutane, retin-A gel, etc.
dont just consult a doctor see a dematologist - this is what they deal with everyday & they know exactly how to help

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
if you have acne, go to a dermatologist, they are the people to speak to about your skin, i have been - have been prescribed the pill - but i didnt want to go on it
roaccutane for very bad acne
then there are less intense medication for milder acne
i've always been prescribed yasmin for acne & once dianne
anybody been on the pill & NOT gained weight??

Hey Monti, How did you discover that you had a clot? Just starting the pill for 'pain' etc. and was switched to Estelle from Loette as it caused breakouts...

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
Hi, I've recently turned 17 and I've been on the pill for nearly two years now.
I've been using Dianne35 or one of the cheaper brands and have had no major sideeffects. My breasts grew, which I don't think of as a side effect but more as a booby prize, and my mood changes every 3minutes. I don't know how much effect the pill has on that because I think I'm moody to start with, but it's nothing that worries me too much.
Just wanted to say that it's not all bad.
Dianne35 does work for some people.
Cheers

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
The progesterone only pill is suitable for those who can not take the combined pill (due to medical conditions etc..) There is a history of blood clots in my family too, so pills containing oestrogen are not recommended. My doctor prescribed the progesterone only pill - this is safe to use as it is the oestrogen in the other that may cause blood clots etc.

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
hello there

I used to have severe acne where I had lumps and bumps that would hurt so bad I could not touch my face. I would miss school because of my pimples looking like sores. I went on the diane pill and like I expected I gained a lot of weight. However I was still experiencing the white heads. I then changed to Yasmine and the first three months were terrible. I would always be crying and pimples ! I could control the beak outs. My cousin recommended I try compresses of lemon and charmile ( you can get it in tea bags). I would do this with my night time routine, after I cleansed my face I would squeeze a few drops of lemon in a glass of water and compress with a towel on my face (your face stings and goes really red). I would warm up the charmile tea and compress with a towel (this calms the redness). If you can wait up to half an hour before cleansing your face again it really helps, if not just cleanse your face (don’t use a lot of cleanser because its already clean) then put whatever you usually put on. I swear by this routing. My acne has cleared up and I have stopped talking the pill because the Yasmine gave me migraines and the Diane made me gain weight.

Also try to use products not necessarily for acne prone skin but for sensitive, oily skin. It makes such a difference. Because the sensitive reduces redness in your skin and the oily reduces the oil that causes the build up of pimples. But please ask your skin specialist before making this change because I’m just someone who spent a lot of money on different products and found this worked.

So my gp advised i went on diane35, he said it helped clear up acne but reading some of the posts on this im kinda affraid ill experience super bad acne and stuff like that. And thats the last thing i want.. I know some people have different reactions and results to some products but im hoping i wont react badly to it!

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
im on a similar pill, Brenda 35 and I've been taking it for a month and it seems to have made my skin worse? And so emotional? Ive cried more this past month than i have in the entire year?

Ive been on the pill for about 7 months now but only recently swapped from Yasmin to Brenda 35.
I have acne, its not terribly inflamed but i have alot of white heads and i hate the way my face looks. I always have to wear make up to feel comfortable. I hate that the pill also puts on weight, I find my hunger has increased dramatically since I've started.

Has anyone been on Brenda 35? and is it worth sticking to or should i stop now? ?

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
Hello, I used to have a few pimples growing up.. i put up with it until i was 18 - i tried proactiv it was alright (so i thought) but its like a bleach and it dried my skin out really bad. I used it for a year or so and it wasnt working like it use to - so i stopped using it.

My pimples got worse than ever. I went to the doctors and asked about "the pill" i got on juliet, the generic for diane and upon starting this pill i was so depressed and recieved bad headaches for atleast a week, but I waited it out for 3 months, like the doctor advised and I noticed my skin started to clear up.. I've been on it for a year or so now and im sick of the tender/sore breasts not to mention the headaches and weight gain due to my appetite for junk food! I swear it makes me eat all the time.

I guess I love the clear skin but im going to have a break from taking the pill, ill most probably get back on it soon!

Thats my experience.

Everyones skin is different though - talk to your doctor.

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
hello there,

can i just say, i have quite bad acne and have ever since i was about 13. im 18 now and have tried a number of things, most of the expensive with no visable results besides an empty wallet!
but in the past year i have gone on Retin A gell, which is just a gell in a tube that you can aply to your face morning and night. it drys out my skin a lot but reduces redness and reduces my acne very effectively! just go to your doctor and ask for a perscription (i live in Australia, so you may not have it in your country).
it really does help.

and also, at the moment i am overjoyed by the fact that i have been on Diane contraceptive pill for 12 days now and already my skin is looking heaps better!!!
although, beware for the first week or so i felt extremely emotional and depressed for no reason. though this may not happen to you. i advise to wait it out until 14 days as i am. i have felt perfectly fine for the past 4 days so....

good luck girls! hope i was of some help.
x

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
OK Girls. Here's the answer.
Acne is caused by various factors which you have complete control over.
Yes COMPLETE CONTROL.
If you know how!
The causes are hormone imbalance (eg. PCOS, Low Progesterone, Underactive Thyroid..)which can be cheked and treated easily,
nutrient deficiencies (eg, nutrients that feed the skin and body and also make hormones in the body,
a poor diet (eg must be rich in nutrients that feed the skin and help with stress
poor elimination through the eliminatory organsm (eg. bowels, lungs, skin, kidneys, lungs and LIVER)
High stress,
and lack of exercise.
You may have only one of these or a combination.
I work as a doctor as well as a clinical nutritionist, herbalist and also practise chinese medicine, acupuncture and naturopathy at 2 hospitals and 2 private clinics in Australia.
I highly recommend getting a hormone saliva test done to check your hormone levels or a full hormonal blood test done on day 21 of your menstrual cycle. And consult with a clinical nutritionist, increase your fibre and exercise.
And the definetly try using Bio-Identical hormone such as, 'natural progesterone' cream it works wonders, in conjunction with lots of water, good diet, some vitamin supplements, high fibre, high 'good' protein and complex carbohydrate diet, fresh fruit and vegetables, cut out all refined sugars and I Guarantee you results. You do however need to check which hormones are out, and fix the hormone imbalance and find out what you are low. My phone number/mobile is 0410778890 text or call me with any queries or consultations. Dr. Kate

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
Hello, I have been on Diane 35 for 6 years now. Its used for severe acne which I had no idea. I was using it for birth control. I had pimples when I was 16 and ever since then my face is really clear.

I started to break out when I was 20 and I decided to use proactiv. The 3 step system. I am canadian using an american product.

It says that the first month or so your face will break out more because the product is cleaning your skin/pores. After that my face has been very clear. I still get the occasional pimple before my period and I put a little dab of that mask on over night. It prevents me from popping the pimple and it turning worse or into a scar.

I also don't use any makeup such as cover up or anything.

If you want to clear your face try Diane 35 for 3 months don't stop until three months and use the proactiv morning and night. It will dry out your face.. it dries out my eyebrows so I don't use the cream anymore, but Id rather have dry skin than acne.

You can put cream on dry skin to help, but its not even that bad and I live in Calgary Alberta which is SUPER DRY.

Iv been on diane for 6 years and I have heard that its not approved by canada as a birth control so I am switching to Yasmin and I really hope I don't get acne again!!!!

Re:Contraceptive pill - Acne Reply to this message
If you look it up yasmin is has a differnt progestogen in it called drosperinone. Drosperinone, is a mild duretic, so it reduces fluid retention such as bloating in the abdomen and breasts (which cause tenderness). Drosperionone also has less androgenic activity. Androgens linked with acne, oily skin and excessive body hair. Go look it up, it might be worthwhile. It does say results may take up to 8 months, so try to persevere I guess.

If you haven't used anything else yet, you should try benzoyl peroxide and other things first because the pill can cause some unwanted side effects. Take some time and do READ THE CMI (consumer medicine information).

I personally have been battling pimples since I was 14, I told myself that it was just a phase people go through, but I'm now almost 20 and I've tried a million and one things from benzoyl peroxide cream to natural remedies and most of them just don't give me the results I want. Benzoyl peroxide cream does work, but I guess I'd rather not have any pimples rather than treating them after they arrive, which is why u should use the face wash or something as well but then it bleaches your clothes and towels if your not careful. Thinking about going on the pill but really don't want the side effects, so I might just look for something else for a little bit longer. (Been recommended comvita HUNI - which contains new zealand manuka honey - will try and tell how it goes maybe)
