Hi, you all seem to be a lot more clued up about Implanon than we are in the UK, I've had an implant for 21 months & experienced really long, heavy periods and severe mood swings sometimes going from cheerful and bright to weepy and irritable in a matter of minutes. My husband and I met six years ago and I started having contraceptive injections 18 monthes later. I suffered loss of sex drive, weight gain, period troubles and mood swings so changed to the implant on the advice of family planning.
We are a young married couple with no children and should be enjoying ourselves to the max rather than him suffering my moods and only having sex once or twice a month when the never ending periods allow so I went to see my DR who decided it was depression and not related to Implanon. She suggested St John's Wort as i did not want anti-depressants however after six weeks I decided I was unhappy with this diagnosis and visited family planning only to find that not only are most of my symptoms related to Implanon but I may not have been protected in the last six weeks because of the St John's Wort. I now have to start taking the mini-pill to boost my implant and go back in three weeks for a pregnancy test.
Does anyone out there know more about the effects of St John's Wort on the implant's effectiveness? If so please reply or email me..... |

Hi,
I had my implanon removed last week. I had had it in for the full three years (actullay a couple of months longer). The doctor didi find it a little hard to remove as some tissue had grown over it, I needed a stitch to heal the hole, but it hasn't caused me too much trouble and seems to be healing quite well and I get the stitch out next week. While on the implanon, I thought it was a wonderful solution to not having to take the pill. I did however expereince extemely irregular periods which would sometimes have months in between but then arrive and stay for weeks, finish for two days and then come back again. From have to wear pads and tampons so much I actually developed an allergy to them and also got regular bouts of thrush and can now only wear cotton pads when I have a period. I also expereinced severe migranes which would last several days and include vomiting. At the time I never associated this with the implanon, but after reading the effects you guys have experienced I think that may have been the cause. I only started to get the migranes after it was implanted and doctors tried meny different medications but I continued to get the nasty headaches. I even ended up in hospital with one after the constant vomiting led to dehydration. I got the implanon out last Wednesday and had a severe migrane all of Thursday which my 'emeregency migrane tablets' couldn't cure. However I am feeling much better now. We are hoping to concieve soon, and I'm hoping I wont have any ongoing complications from the implanon. For the whole three years, I thought the implanon was a great idea and even convinced some of my friends to get it, and just put all the side effects down to other complications. Only after I have read these posts does it all make sense. When the time comes form me to look at contraception again, I think I will seriously consider all other avenues. |

| Hi! I've had my implanon for 2 1/2 yrs now and so far I've noticed that I've gained weight, I've had migraines everyday, very moody and I seldom have my period until recently I've found something that helped me combat all these side effects and now am feeling really great. I don't know if I can explain it over the board so if anyone is interested to know more, you can just email me. |

| Hi, I had my Implanon removed last week, I'm 43, expiry date is in another 2 months, but I wanted to be safe. No periods for 2 yrs 10 months. Very depressed for about 4 days every month but it didnt dawn on me that it could be the implanon until tonight. I'll be monitoring my moods etc closely. Will have an injection for the contraception for 12 month supply and think seriously about having tubes tied. |

Hi,
I had my Implanon removed approx 3 months ago after having it in for 18 months. I had it removed because I was always spotting, bleeding for weeks on end and very, very moody. It really never affected my weight. My poor kids & husband really thought I was a crazy woman. Since the removal my moods have definately settled down, still moody at times but isn't everyone! Periods have returned to normal. The only problem I exprerienced post removal was a severe headache for about 10 days,1 week after removal. My GP put it down to withdrawal from the removal of the Implanon. |

| Hi, I'm thinking about getting remove the implanon, because since i've got it (8 months), my period practicaly dissapeared, I just had 2 periods and i've gain 9kg of weight, i think that's unhealthy even the doctors says it's not, i mean, i'm all the things we need to take out with our period we just keeping them, that's why we all are moody, gaining weight and some of us don't even want to have sex, we just don't feel like it, anyway I think is not that good. |

I have recently taken out my implant which i had for about 8 months. I never really had many problems. My period got lighter and lasted longer. With pms i never had much of it im usually a moody person anyway, never noticed if i'd put on weight coz i still got my pregnancy weight from my first.
Now that i've taken it out and am trying to conceive again my periods are being silly. So now i have to wait another month or so to work out when i ovulate :( |

I had implanon inserted last year and after about 2 months decided to take it out because iwas going overseas and didnt want any problems to occur where i wouldnt be able to get it taken out if needed. While on it i occured light bleeding in the beginning for a few weeks but nothing after that, was working well. When I had it taken out the doctor had a little trouble finding it and had to cut a little bit longer, but scar is very minimal. Wasnt a bad experience. Went back on birth control pill and have no problems. All in all I really didnt give it enough time but it was working fairly well for the short amount of time I had it, and wasnt to much of a problem to take out. I just wonder if I had had it in my arm for a longer amount of time if it would have been even harder to find.
Hope this helps. |

I also had Implanon. It was removed last November after 2yrs & 3mths. The first year was great, no periods, only slight 'grumpiness'. The second year was not good. Periods for up to 5weeks with 2 or 3 week break. PMS - never had it so bad. I only gained about 4kg. I feel for others who have it worse. All the literature that comes with the implant raves about how good it is, pity it doesn't show the real world effects.
I had a friend with Implanon, her doctor calls her 'the poster girl for Implanon'. She's had it for 4yrs (2nd implant) with no periods or problems! As my doctor says every woman is different.
I found some varied websites by simply typing Implanon into Yahoo search engine (world, not just AU.)
Good luck to you all. Finding the right contraceptive can be quite difficult. |

Finally I have found that I am not the only one to have suffered at the hands of Implanon! I have been trying to get it removed since August 2004. I have had continuous periods for nearly a year now and my personalty has changed dramatically. My fun-loving side has completely disappeared and been replaced with this nasty moody aggressive side, it has made me feel so unhappy. Unlike others, I have lost so much weight and I look ill.
After two failed attempts at removing it, I am now waiting for Organon to send a expert to find it and remove it under general anaestetic. An ultra-sound has only been able to find 1.5cms of it - lets hope they find the rest! Whilst I wait I have been put on HRT to try and combat the moods, HRT - I'm only 33yrs!
If anyone else has had problems with the removal of the Implanon implant, I'd love to hear from you. |

Hi. i'm 22 yrs old, and I currently have my 2nd implanon inserted. The first one i had in for 2 yrs, 3 months. I had it removed after experiencing a really heavy painful period that lasted 10 days. Before that it was only that 'time of the month' about 3 times a year for a day or two at a time. I understand that sometimes the implanon may not last the full 3 years. For about a month i used a mini pill (microval) to 'boost' the implanon.
My current implanon has been in for a year now and I have only had 3 periods. Most people I tell this to think its bad or unhealthy to have it like this, but from what my doctor tells me, everyone experiences different reactions and symptoms to the implanon. I'm glad it works good for me though! Good luck with yours! :) |

| Hi ladies after reading your responses to the Implanon Implant I had to let you know that I to have an Implant still currently inserted. I have had it now for 21months and have had nothing but problems with it. After the birth of my Fifth child I was irregular and heavy with my periods so hence the Implant. The weight gain was shocking the periods improved well for a while anyway. Later I found I was always moody and my periods would last for 15-19 weeks at a time and then I would have a break for 2 days and then I would get them back each time got longer. In the end I suffered depression so I was put onto the Oral Contraceptive pill to stop the bleeding to a normal once a month cycle, which now I think is great. I having burning sensations up my arm where the implant is and it gets itchy and I have suffered a lot of headaches since having the implant inserted. I am having the implant removed shortly and hope it isnt too bad of an experience but I would never recommend the Implant to anyone. I hope once it is removed the moods will stop and I can go back to being my happy joyful old self. After reading your response I can honestly say I am a little worried. Good luck ladies and may we all be happy and healthy. |

| I had my implanon removed in October last year after having it in for 21 months. I found that when I had it in I felt like I had constant PMS acting mean and nasty all the time and taking these moods out on other people. Now that it is out I feel like myself again and I would never get Implanon again. During the time that I did have it in I didn't get a period though and since having it removed (which wasn't a very nice process) menstruation still hasn't returned. Does anybody know if that is normal to not have had my period yet? |

Hi,
I work in the medical industry and have a number of friends who actually launched the Implanon on to the market when they worked for Organon. I also have a friend who still works there so if you would like to let me know if there is specific information you are looking for I can always ask if they know the answer or we can try to get the info from Organon. I found them really helpful. I too have an Implanon and have had some ups and downs with it over the past 18 months but almost everything has calmed down except for the weight gain so if you want to chat let me know and i'll send you my email address so it's a little more private.
Kindly, Deborah |

Hi, I would like to hear from women who have an Implanon implant and have had it removed. I am thinking about removing mine to help with severe PMS problem I am experiencing. I would also love any web links to studies or information on Implanon that look into this.
Any help would be appreciated. |
