Hi Rosie
It's good to hear that the implanon wasn't masking anything nasty, and that you are slowly improving. When did you have it removed? I think I am just starting a second bleed, which may explain why the symptoms of depression, fatigue, morning hunger, dry skin & hair, insomnia, low back pain and headache have been worse in the last couple of days. I hope my mental health improves like yours did - poor concentration is really interfering with my work.
I wish there was not such a gap between illness and wellness in healthcare. I'd be interested in acupuncture too, but it is so expensive! I guess I need to give myself more time, keep doing helpful/healthful things, and try not to worry ;) |

| Hey jackinthebox, I have had a gallbladder scan, a kidney scan, a tummy scope, a breast check and a lot of blood tests including hormone levels, these have all come back normal. I'm trying acupuncture at the moment which I find really helpful but its expensive so I can't go as often as I should. I was hopeful that when my period is finished things will settle down again. I have the physical symptoms back although milder than they used be, the my mental health seems to be ok I don't have the depression or anxiety that I had a few months ago and my weight is starting to creep down. How are you feeling now? |

Hi Rosie, thanks for your message.
I'm sad to hear you're feeling rotten - that really sux when you thought that Implanon was the problem but the symptoms come back. Hard for others to understand also.
What sort of tests did you have done? Have you thought about seeing a naturopath for hormone rebalancing?
I am currently trying to support my system with omega 3, vitamin B complex (mega dose!), calcium + magnesium, and zinc. I started out with vitex but because my symptoms came back, and I'd read that vitex acts to raise progesterone, I thought I was only making my situation worse so I stopped taking it. I'm eating more phytoestrogens (e.g. soy, linseed) in an effort to encourage my body to produce more estrogen. But I realise I may have this all mucked up!
Won't it be great to feel normal again? :)

| Hey, jacinthebox I have been having the exact same problem as you. I had really bad side effects and after I had Implanon removed I seemed to improve but I got my period two days ago and have felt as bad as I did when I had Implanon in. I was worried that my symptoms may not have been due to Implanon, but I've had so many tests done and they have all come back fine. Since I got my period I've been getting really dizzy and the muscle pains, tummy aches and heartburn is as bad as it was while on Implanon. I'm rally worried that I'll never be the same as I used to. |

Hi.
I had implanon removed on 01 June 2009 after experiencing almost every symptom of progesterone excess you can imagine. The side effects of implanon got worse over 18mths. Finally, it was depression that made me decide to get off hormonal contraception.
After its removal, I experienced a few days of nausea and headache in the afternoon, some breast swelling, and general reduction in all other progesterone-excess symptoms.
After 8 days, I had what I suppose was anovulatory bleeding (since I would not have ovulated with or without the implanon) - no PMS, the bleeding was not heavy, not light, and lasted about 5 days.
Since then, I have not ovulated, and I am experiencing many of the progesterone-excess symptoms again.
Has my body forgotten how to make enough estrogen?
I felt unpleasantly pregnant on implanon; now I feel menopausal!
Any ideas? |

Hi all,
Hoping you's maybe be able to help me. First off i am not trying to get pregnant at the minute and do not have children, although i am 31 and will be wanting to try in the next year or two. Basically i was on Implanon for 2yrs 8 months and got removed in Aug 08. It took me a few months to have my first period and since then they have been totally all over the place. When i do get one the following period is around 10-16 days late. Every month i seem to be doing pregancy tests but all negative. My last period began on 17th May and lasted 2 days, very light so did a test last Friday and negative. I don't feel pregant or any different but just wondering if what my doctor says is right that it takes a year for the implanon to fully leave your system (how come people get pregant before a yr!) and if your periods are regular?
Having very sore lower abdomonal pain currently!
Thanks xx |

| tsivewright, not a problem on giving u my insight of whats happened with me.... Having enough energy to get back to ur old self again, tell me about it ever since ive had my little boy who is 15 months today i have had no energy to do anything... Yes same as my excess weight i would love to loose it as well, i am finding it very hard to get motivated and when i do i get too exhausted too quickly... The spotting has now turned into an actual period... This is my first period affter having it removed and its been exactly 4 weeks today ive had it done :) with u im not exactly sure when u will get urs... I read most women should get their periods a month after its removed... Well yay for me that means hopefully im back to normal.... I'm 22 so i should be absolutely full of beans but im not :(.. I dont recommend this to anyone unless it works for u... BUT like tsivewright suggested DO UR RESEARCH FIRST!!! and agreed with the contraceptive part, i never wanted it either!! |

| Hey 1madb1tch thanks for your imput. I just want to go back to having enough energy to keep up with everyday life. Not to mention my enerfgetic three kids. I want to get the exess weight off however have no energy. Am struggling with this in a bad way. Im not feeling sorry for myself just tired. hope to be back to old self soon. Not sure about your spotting. Does anyone know when we are suspected to get a full cycle back? How long before a positive preg test would show if i were pregas? im 30 and should be full of energy faceing life full speed ahead. I would advise anyone thinking having implanon in to do your research. Its great for contraceptive you never want to have sex and when you do you get spotting for a week after. It may work for some women and be fantastic however its not for me. |

Hi all,
Well, I thought I would add my 2 cents if it helps anyone.
I was on Implanon for 6.5 years (had 2 over that time). I had it out Feb 09.
My periods were never affected, and have been regular throughout.
After my first period post removal, I started tracking my cycle, and felt strong mittelschmerz 14 days in, so I know I ovulated (I used to get this prior to Implanon and didn't get this throughout my time on Implanon, so I know I wasn't ovulating whilst it was in).
I had the following affects while it was in:
- weight gain
- hair thinning
- total lack of sex drive mentally/emotionally and actively not wanting to be touched, partially due to oversensitivity.
- increased number of headaches (at least one a week)
- A lack of feeling strong emotions (mostly this was great as I felt very peaceful and calm, but then the flipside I think was the lack of sex drive and passion).
Since having it out, I've had the following affects:
- mild depression (this only lasted the first 2 months, and I'm not sure if this was just me not being used to hormonal shifts anymore)
- a return of PMS and hormonal mood swings (I'd blissfully forgotten what this was like! I felt inexplicable rage one minute over nothing and then it would totally go away in a few minutes)
- periodic nausea
- some slow weight loss (I don't know if the neasea if affecting the weight loss or if they are 2 different symptoms)
- periodic light-headedness
- increased thoughts about sex which is I suspect my sex-drive coming back again.
I feel terrible for the women on here who have had the bleeding/fertility problems - as I said my period has been my regular 28.5 day cycle whilst on Implanon and also the past 3 months since it's been out, and I'm positive I'm ovulating.
It's the nausea that affects me most currently.
My other syptoms I put down to hormones fluctuating again and my body not being used to those rises and dips in them - powerful things they are. |

what are the signs that you are pregnant?
i came of the implanon may 18th, i'm now 10days late. i've been told home pregnancy test will always come back negative in the first trimester of getting the implanon out and getting pregnant (does that make sense?) i'm curious to know the signs. lately all i seem to be doing is going to the toilet (even if i havent drank or eaten anything) there are strange cramps?, not sure if i should call them that. . . lol and its not been comfortable having intercourse. |

| just a quick update. I got some spotting yesterday along with the cramps. Still very bloated today, but nothing else seems to have happened. I had the Implanon in for 6 yrs and have not had a cycle the whole time i had it. so everything is very strange. My boobs are not as sore now, but the nausea and heartburn is still there. I am not sure if this is my period, or is it yet to come?? |

| hey Lea_robbo, thank goodness, I was really worried there was something really wrong with me. How long did it take things to settle down for you? Mine has only been out for two weeks and I am feeling better now than I was before I had it out. Its been so long since I've had a natural period (I was pregnant for 9 months before hand and breastfed for a year then implanon for 4.5 years) I can't really remember the pains I had with them, but these pains are down the very bottom of my tummy and I was wondering if this is normal, also I have this awful tiredness that I just can't shake off no matter how much sleep I get. |

| Hey there, I'm having a very similar problem to you. I had it in for 4.5 years and had it removed at the start of june, for the first few days I felt awful, my whole body hurt, then I had a 2 day light bleed since that stopped my tummy swelled and I look pregnant and my poor boobs are really sore and heavy, I also have this pain in my lower tummy and I was weeing a lot so I went to the doc as I thouhgt I had a kidney infection, but I'm ok. I couldn't possibly be pregnant so it must be the effects of the implanon. If I could turn back time I'd never have got the bloody thing put in. |

| hi there, i have also had my implanon removed (May 2009) after yrs! i have not yet had a period and my hormones are all over the place. I had a blood test last week to check for pregnancy but it came back negative. for the first few weeks, my boobs were killing me, i had heartburn (which i am still geting) nausea, weight gain has also been a problem. I have also been very moody, which is not good for my husband and i have been getting cramps like i am about to start my cycle but NOTHING. it is very frustrating, because i am not used to all these changes and one minte i am ok, then i just feel giddy. i hope it does not last too long. |

Also,
Just realised, reading others posts. In October 2007 I was put out of work due to depression. Severe depression.
I have been on 40mg of anti depresents since. I stopped tking them when I went to have the implant out cos if I do concieve I dont want my bab having them. I have felt funny and woosy and quite down but nothing like before.
I think the implanon makes you depressed , put on wieght, have mood swings, and bleed very heavy. I used to bleed for up to 6 weeks in one go . Then have 1 or 2 weeks off then bleed for 4 to 6 weeks again.,
If you are thinking of having it put in , I would really think twice about it.
And as there is a few people who dont get any problems with it, there are absolutely loads that do !
