Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
hey brydon6 ... a while since your post... but I also get that "bum pain" from time to time, not with every cycle, but know exactly what you mean ... I can't sit, stand, walk... and it really does feel just as you describe it. Over the past 2 years have developed crazy symptoms (I'm now 46) - like burning sensations over the right ovary area, sometimes 2 periods in a month, alternating very painful periods that go full throttle for 2-3 days then disappear for 2 -3 days, then are on for young and old again for a couple of days. My Dr says I am too young to be perimenopausal... lately have had night sweats and insomnia too. Finally have had enough, and am seeing a gynae in November... hope that she has a solution coz I am nearly ready to tell them to take the whole lot out and stop my agony ....

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Got mine at 11, now 23, nothing but agony from the start. I currently double packet (can't triple packet as suggested by GP because I bleed through) my pill -Cilest- but still get period pain from about a week before my period, take neuofen during that time, then when I actually start I am sick, pale, anaemic, and in constant pain, so that it literally takes my breath away, and if I'm not careful, I pass out. I take two feminax and two neurofen every four hours, wake myself twice in the night to take pills and change pads, can't use the alternatives, and have begun taking Feminax Ultra (naproxen) but found it was no use... so I think I'll go back to the regular feminax. Only problem is, feminax knocks me for six and I can't concentrate, hold a conversation or drive on them... hardly a perfect option therefore... I am meant to be able to have a LIFE whilst managing my pain. A laproscopy three years ago showed nothing, I am due back at gynae at the end of the month for more discussion. I'm trying hard to find a doctor to take me seriously... and this one seems to. But I completely sympathise with you when you say some GPs are useless. At the age of 13, having vomited and passed out at school, I was told it would all be ok once I'd had children. AT 13?! Honestly. I feel for you all!!! *hugs*

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Interesting that most people got their periods early here - I got my period at 11 and I'm 5 foot 2. I've never heard period pain being correlated to smallness, but maybe it's a factor?

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Wow! I can't believe that I've come across these messages as I thought I was one of the only people who suffered from such pain. I'm 32, and ever since I got my period at 11, I've experienced excruciating pain every month: pain in my stomach, back, thighs, constant shifting to stop the pain and pressure in my bottom, super-heavy flow and blood clots on the first day, vomitting, white face, shakiness, slurring when I speak because I'm in so much pain, and sometimes eventually blacking out. This is the first day, the second day is blood clots and manageable pain. When I was younger it would happen in public and people thought I was a drug addict - not nice. Workmates always think I'm over-reacting, and doctors have patronised me incessantly...to the point of telling me to have a baby. Yeah right. A laparoscopy at 20 revealed nothing, and I haven't been to a doctor since. Instead I now buy three packets of Ponstan from the chemist, and at the first sign of period pain, I take six tablets at once, then continue to do so every two hours for the first 24 hours. They space me out and stop the pain somewhat - I've also tried TENS and Chinese medicine, but they were useless. I've only ever used pads as the alternative makes the pain worse (I was suprised and soothed to read that someone else thought so too). In short I'm completely disgusted at the medical profession for not taking my pain seriously. I plan my life around it, and will not go anywhere without a big supply of Ponstan. I hope to god that the pain does go away after I give birth.

awww ive just had a hell of a night in excruciating pain reading these posts helped me feel i am not alone,i became immune to neurophen plus, and the cramps were unbearable, same as mentioned before about rolling around in aggony, puking and cold sweats, god if man had to endure this there would be a cure by now!
i did get some relief for a time when i was on the pill,my doc told me to take the pill continuously for 3months at a time giving me only 4 periods a year,im off the pill 2yrs now and i thought i had been cured till last night!!!
i might have to go back on it,i think i need morphine right now-is there anything for the pain that works....eeek

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
I suffer severe period pains too and have found that doctors really aren't that helpful. I'm 26 now and have had this ever since I started having periods. I've fainted in numerous public places, including a train station loo. The only thing that works for me is the pill, if I'm not on the pill then a combination of 2 anadin and 2 ibuprofen at the same time as soon as I start bleeding keep the pain to a slightly more mangable level. The pill is definatly worth the bother, try as many as you want until you find one that suits you, I've been through about ten and have settled on one called yasmin. It does mean that most months I can get away with a couple of painkillers rather than coctails. I also get a more normal period length of 5 days as apposed to the 7-9 days I bleed for when I'm not on the pill. I think the more experience of this I've had the better I've learnt to deal with it, but it is a condition and there should be more serious help out there, period pains are contractions and severe contractions are what women go through in childbirth!
I really feel for everyone suffering with this, I wouldn't wish the pain this causes me on my worst enemy!

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Hi my name is Bonnie. I have the same issues with periods as you.
Excruciating pain in belly, pain down back, bum and legs, pins and needles in arms, hot and cold flushes, nausea, fainting, very sleepless nights and the same feed back from doctors. They say that because Im small, when the lining of the uterus flows through the cervix, the pain is caused by the narrow opening. Well thats probely right but I cant go through life like this. It affects my work, sleep and relationship because my partner doesnt know how to help, but at the time you just want to die not be hugged.

I think that the doctors should look more into what we are experiencing, and not just think we feel pain more then others!!

I think there is a lot more problems causing the pain then we think, if you experience the same pain, you should think twice too.

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Hey,
Im 21 years old and have been a type I diabetic since age 9 (inject insulin directly through a needle). My periods were always irregular and started late, my development was very slow. My periods have been getting progressivley regular but also progressivley worse. Last month, for example, the cramps were so bad I was on the floor screaming and vomitted also. I thought it was a aone-off, but then this month it was worse and 5 neurofen's (with coedine, a derivative of morphene) didn't make it go away.
ive been on insulin since age 9, and my periods weren't bad for thr first 3 years, so I can't attribute the severity to insulin... all i can do is go on the minipill and stop being dysfunctional for 3 days every month!
Sorry I wasn't more help :(

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Yeah, dont they suck hey.
What i wanna know is does anyone on here ever get pain with ovulation as well?
I get a period kinda pain when i ovulate, cramps, diarrhoea, feel sick and tired.
And around the last days of my period or ovulation i get a pain that i call a "bum pain" it feels like someone is shoving a knife up your butt, excuse the terminology but thats how i describe it, it comes out of the blue radiates through my whole lower abdomen and i cant move a muscle cause the pain is so sharp and so so bad. It started after my 3rd child was born and has gotten progressively worse after my 4th.Nothing gets rid of the pain. But it always comes at the end of either ovulation or period time?
Anyone else get this?

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
i would say some of you are lucky. when i first started my period it was fine but it was irregular to the point where i was on it one time for nine months and not on it for the next two years. Well got a diagnosis turned out it was PCOS went on pill to get regular flow and thats when the pain started all around my belly, back and thighs and nausea, constipation. i cannot sleep at night, hot water/ baths do not help. have been prescribed mefanamic acid does not work, have taken ibuprofen gives me diaarhoea. the other day i had to take ten tablets. 6 of the mefanamic and 4 of the ibuprofen. my pain lasts about 10 days even after the period has stopped. i am at my wits end i am missing work and i don't want to have a hysterectomy yet i'm only 23. does anyone have any solutions? i am already taking the highest dosage of tablets and the maximum allowed.

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Neurofen workd wonders, have the max dosage of them, and use thier heat patches, put on ur fav music or a good movie, have some chocolate and a hot drink, keep well hydrated, lots of meat, sometimes fish is really good too. when it gets really bad thers nothing much you can do except go on the pill, but that makes you fat, and the chip, well my friend has that and she is only on her periods 2 days a month but shes developed a sex crazed personality.

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
hey guys... oh my gosh it is such a relief to find this page. I'm 15 and several months ago, on the first day of my period, I would get unimaginable cramps for the whole day... they're terrible - you can't stand up, sitting down makes it feel like you're just compacting the pain, and lying down is sooo uncomfortable... and (i'm not sure if this is a result of the pain, or of something else) I get boiling hot, but when i touch my arm I'm freezing. and then suddenly I feel like i've jumped into an ice bath, but I'm sweating like crazy. If i stand up, and even when I'm lying down, I pass out again and again (less if i'm lying down), and I vomit continuously. I know the vomiting isn't because of something I've eaten because usually its at a time in between meals - when i vomit its just kind of greyish liquid, nothing substanc-y my body is trying to get out (sorry, you guys probably dont want to hear all that about vomit... :D).
I got this for about 4 months in a row, and then my mum got me on to Vitamin B6 tablets, and that's slowed it down a bit, to about every second or third month. And just recently I've started on Evening Primrose tablets, and so both of them really kind of soften the edge of the pain, which means that its a lot easier to just sleep through the fainting and the vomiting - when i can't, i just take a couple of Ibuprofen, which stop muscular pain (for the cramps) and lower fevers, which is fab. And everything kind of fixing itself up now, I'm drinking lots of water and trying to eat really healthily, and it hasn't happened for about four months now!! But i remember it was really scary when it first started, because i went out of my mind, and i was just mumbling like crazy - and i was at the movies, so I kept fainting and whacking my head on the marble floor - ow! Hope theres something in here that can help people that are going through now what I HOPE i just came out of... GOOD LUCK!

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Hi everyone, it seems that alot of people are having this problem. My situation is that I am 40years old, and I have recently started taking insulin as I am a type 2 diabetic. The last two months, since I have been taking the insulin my periods have become extremely heavy and the pain has been quite bad. I believe it is related to me taking the insulin, but the doctors tell me that insulin does not effect hormones. Are there any other diabetics out there taking insulin that have experienced the same issues as me?

You can buy Buscopan over the counter in tablet form. Its supposed to help for severe cramping for people with irritable bowel, but it does seem to work with period pains too.

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Ive been also told Naprogesic is best, coz it specifically targets the things that produce progesterone, which causes the contractions and therefore pain, and also reduces bleeding apparently coz of less contractions. I find it kinda works better if i take the napro as soon as I get my period, rather than the pain getting there. And trying to take some panadol or panadeine helps as well. But do NOT take neurofen and naprogesic as they are in the same class of drugs.

Also what I found kinda helped one night withering in pain was to like be in doggy style, but bend at your elbows and have your butt higher...it reduces stres/pressure on the uterus.

Also massage can help apparently. I found a physio who does something that can help reduce period pain. Also chiropractors claim that the nerves from your spine can cause the pain, so if you see a chiropractor they might help.

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Late bloomer, at 15yrs11months. Spent a lot of time in the sick bay coz mum reckoned it was 'normal', and refused to let me stay home from school. Had very bad pains and heavy bleeding. Got levlen in 2002 2yrs later, mum chucked a mental. It didnt help really at all so went off it. Went back on it a yr later, to try and control the pain and bleeding. Last year, went to GP at 3wk period, she said stress, next day massive pain and sickness, went to a GP, who said get an ultrasound, revealed a polyp. By the time i got the operation, it was a 7wk period. Most of the time filing a pad AND super tampon every 2hrs. At one stage it was filling both EVERY HOUR!!! Had to happen at work, with big clots! Had operation, 12 days of minor post op bleeding, then nearly 2wks MAJOR pain! Settled down after that. More problems still, another ultrasound all clear thank god (they are so uncomfy! I swear everytime im close to wetting myself lol), and saw another gynae, whos trying me on a new pill, Norminin.

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
OMG finally a site where other ppl are going through what I am going through. I am 32 and came off the pill a year ago with a view to having a baby (as partner and I are actively trying). Before coming off the pill I rarely saw a period but in the past year my periods have regulated to every 35 days but damn.. are they bad. Last month my partner was ready to take me to the A & E as I was lying on the floor face down ready to pass out. I found that regular pain killers were useless and found that Feminax were quite good but not quite enough. I am sitting here now in terrible pain and nausea but the Feminax, although its kicked in, works slightly. I have taken to smoking w**d in order to illeviate the pain (and I am not promoting cannabis use in any respect) but its the only thing that seems to be working for me :( I went to my doctor and he was pretty useless, its when I said that I havent been able to conceive that he agreed to send me for an ultra sound and IF i have got endometrisis, its doubtful the ultrasound will even find it, not good when the biological clock is ticking. Unfortunately I am having to use tampons as I am bleeding through normal towels every hour and a half so I definitely know something is wrong. If you guys can get Feminax try it, alternatively you can get stronger meds by prescription. I find sitting in an upright position with my head down towards my knees ileviates the pain for a little while. A bath seems to have no effect whatsoever :(
Sorry for the rant people.
TT x

Re:Severe Period Pain Reply to this message
Hi I have just left a message on the beauty & General health boards. There was a lady asking if anyone suffered form sore boobs during their periods. I answered & was sent a product to try. I am the same as all of you & finally this Gel works Boob Eze. Yes I was more then secptic to try it but honestly it worked for me so well. I actually thought it was a joke, but the name is what it does, (sorry to the company for that). I use it on my breasts, tummy & whereever I get pain during my period. You can all laugh & scoff but it really does work and you store it in the fridge. I hope you have look at it it or email her & ask for a sample its free for the time being all I had to do was give honest feedback once I tried it. I hope this helps & I have nothing to do with the company just asked to try & wow it worked for me.
regards
Julie
