I think it's very smart of you to actually compare methods and read up on them. Not many people do that and they just go with what they think is the easiest.

I'm not overweight but I had irregular periods at your age and infact had them till I fell pregnant. Afterwards my periods went to normal but when I picked forms of birth control my periods went crazy.

I've been on every birth control pill you can think of and only one worked for me and that was ortho tri-cyclen. It cleared my skin and I felt wonderful. But then it could be different for you.

I wanted to have another baby so I did later and decided I wanted something different. I started Depo shots. That was the worse decission I ever made. I gained 40lbs and I constantly would bleed for a whole year. But everyone is different on any kind of birth control. I couldn't handle it anymore and stop getting shots.

As for the patch no you can't just pull it off it really does stick on there really good so don't be afraid that you might pull it off. No, I wasn't on the patch but I know several friends who are on it and they think its the best thing since slice bread lol.

I'm on implanon right now there is a chance you will gain weight on this too. I've only had this a month and so far my bleeding has gone crazy but I already looked into this and this is normal at first and later might slack off. I'll give it 9 months like my gyno suggested.

Just talk to your gyno and I'm sure he or she will suggest what is best for you. Depo will make you gain and so will implanon so I doubt you need those.

Good luck and let us know which one you decide.

Contraceptive Help Reply to this message
I'm 18 years old and have been sexuality active for about a year. I want to get on some kind of birth control. I've compared all the methods multiple times and I'm completely stumped. I have no idea what I should use.

The pill seems like a safe choice and would probably help my irregular periods and acne. (My period has been on and off irregular for 6-7 years.) But, it has warnings for those who are overweight, it isn't as effective. That is my problem. I am quite overweight and I really don't want to get pregnant. Wondering every month if I am or not is driving me nuts!

I've read too many horror stories about Depo and Impanon, my next choice, to even want to try them now. I already have weight and emotional issues that don't need more problems.

I'm afraid of NuvaRing not working because it would become displaced (which has happened to MANY of my friends) and then I would be unprotected.

The patch, being that like a sticker, would never work for me. I would end up peeling it off unconsciously.

I've never been pregnant before which rules out all IUD's and IUC's. My friend, who has had a child, tried Mirena and it turned out horribly for her so I'll take her word for it and skip that too.

I'd rather not use any kind of sponge or insert that I must do before I have sex. Right now condoms are bad enough and I still don't trust them very much.

So what does that leave me to get? I want to have children, just not anytime in the next year-2years. In an ideal world I would just lose 100lbs and get on the pill then train myself to take it the same time every single day. But since this isn't a perfect world, I'm still fat and probably wouldn't be able to remember taking a pill at the same time everyday.

Thanks for any help that you can give. Suggestions are welcomed.
