I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with the "SHOT", i am 20 years old and have been on depo for about 5 years, through out the years a have not had any kind of weird or painful side effects, except that my periods have been very light. When i first gotten my shot i was 130lbs and today (6/11/08) i weigh in at 145lbs. Depo has helped my periods which i'm sure we all hate, but for my advice to all you users....next time ask ?s before you take..depo isn't ment for EVERYONE.. you will all have different side effects..remember not one size fits all...all of our bodies are the same BUT function and react different to everything...if you understood and were aware of all the side effects than you wouldn't be crying about what the shot has done to you..i'm greatly sorry for you all who had problems..my last injection was in 12/07 and finlly have gotten my period as of 6/11/08. my advice to those who had problems is next time be prepared for what you're in for..ask questions..find out any info you can!! remember..we are all different and our bodies are not one the same!!

I believe it can take 6-8 months to get out of your system.

Hi everyone,I have been reading this message board for awhile now.I have been on depo since the birth of my son in April 2004.My last shot was in February 2008.For the last 4 years, i did not have any side effects...Until after my last shot.i have gained 5 lbs since then and have become depressed, angry and moody. Before that, i would have recommended this shot to other women. Now I want everyone to know it is 100% poison.I am still waiting for it to leave my system...it doesn't seem like it ever will.Sometimes, i just want to go to sleep and never wake up.But i have a beautiful son and a wonderful husband worth living for. They deserve to have a healthy and happy mother and wife.Best of luck to everyone who is still suffering from the effects of this poison. IT SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE MARKET!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I took the Depo shot back when I was 19 after my son was born, I did gain a little weight but didn't have any of the other side affects. But my husband and I did try unsuccessfully to have another child, which finally happened after 3 years of trying. My daughter is now 8.

I was receintly prescribed topamax for migraine headaches and told to take birth control, my regular physician said the most effective BC was the Depo shot. Well 1 shot and my migraines are uncontrolable even with the topamax, my face is broken out(at 31!!!!) and my mood swings are OMG mood swings. But the most shocking part.......I might be pregnant!!!! NO ONE told me topamax depletes the effectiveness of the shot! ARG!!!!!
If I'm only having pregnancy symptoms does anyone know how long it takes for 1 shot to leave your system?

ok first of all if there is no build up of blood then tell me why i have been on my period for 2 and a half months! I did research it and it does say that it does not release the egg but when u do have your period again then it realeases all of the eggs that have been inside the uterus. Some women react different than others!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
The main problem with depo is the bone density risk. Its suppoes to reduce etopic pregnacy and ovarian cysts and cancer of the uterus and ovaries. I have used it twice just got abit of irregualr bleeding but not much and headaches..it only took me 7 months from my last injection to fall pregnant with my 2nd kid. As a short tearm contraceptive i would recomened it but if you have bone problem i wouldn't recomened it..but if i had the choice beetween depo and implanon i would choose depo each time

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hi, I'm 30 and just had my first DP injection about 2 months ago. I had been on the combined pill for approx 13 years prior to that with no side effects whilst on the pill. I have read a lot of negative comments on here about DP, however I think it's important to hear both positive & negative stories so that people can make their own minds up.

Since having the injection, I have not had any spotting, I have not had my period obviously, and I haven't had any side effects such as weight gain, headaches, acne, mood swings etc. Yes, it's only been 2 months however side effects don't take long to appear usually & a girl knows her own body.

I am aware that it can deplete your body of calcium stores, however I don't intend to use this for years, probably a couple of years at most. I guess for those who haven't tried it and read these message boards, it might be nice to know that it does work really well for some people, and obviously there are a lot of women who dislike it.

I think you have to make your own mind up and if you try the injection, you have it in your system for 12 weeks however if you don't like it or it doesn't suit your body, there's nothing to say you have to have it again and you can revert back to an alternative form of contraception.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Do you even understand how this contraception works? There is no build up of blood, or "eggs lying inside of you" - the egg is not released at all, so there is no blood at all (this is why there is no period - no blood = no period).

If you have made the choice not to take the pill or get the depo shot, thats fine - but PLEASE research your information or speak to a doctor about how these things actually work before spreading ridiculous misinformation like this.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
HI Cooper5683 -

I have been on the depo for 12 years - I just found out last friday that you should not be on the depo for that long - and I am about .06 away from having osetroprosis - Get a bone density scan ASAP and probably stay off of it.

I loved this shot!! No side effects for me - Not over weight - no mood swings - no periods! Now it is distorying my bones.

For anyone else that has lost bone mass and has been off the shot for a couple years - How much bone mass did you gain back???

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Man, I am glad I came across this message board!!! This whole Depo thing has been so horrible for me. I have generalized anxiety disorder that has been managed just fine over the last year by Zoloft. Then in February of this year my gyno suggested that I try Depo injections. She said, "Oh, you'll love it! You won't get your period and you won't have to remember to take the pill". The only negative side effect she told me about was 5 lbs. of weight gain. Well, about a week-and-a-half ago, I started getting more and more anxious and freaked out. I called my psychiatrist, and when he heard that I had been given Depo he about had a heart attack! He said that he has seen patients turn bipolar after having Depo and that it can take months to feel normal again after stopping the injections. Apparently the reason I'm feeling this way is because the medication metabolizes faster in my body than others, so I started having withdrawal symptoms two weeks before my next show was even due! Over the last week I have had terrible nausea, depression, anxiety attacks, and I have been bawling all over my poor husband. Fortunately I only had one shot and hopefully by getting back on the pill all of this stuff will go away. I am happy for those of you who have enjoyed Depo, but for me it has been a nightmare. They need to avoid giving this medication to people who have a history of depression, anxiety, or other disorders.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hello, well...becareful and chose your birth control WISELY...injecting synthetic hormones into your body is never a good thing because it's not natural. So, I would look into an IUD if your going to be sexually active with your spouse. Now as for my story...from that last blog I found out that the ENT told me that it's a Thyroid cyst and not a tumor and very unlikely to be something bad. So Thank God for that! Unfortunately, do to heavy bleeding a trans *** l ultrasound revealed Endometrial Polyps...something I never had before! It's insane! All these things I didn't have before...to much of a coincidence if you ask me. But as for your situation...Everytime you put something artifical in you your stressing out your immune system because it's synthetic and it starts to try to fight it off. Again, I can't emphasize enough...if your going to be on some type of birth control...the ultimately best option is refrain from sexual intercourse until marriage and don't start poisioning your body at such a young age. It will catch up with you. That's the best advice I can possibly give you.

Hi there, I was just wondering if you were in Australia because I've been trying to find out if the YAZ birth control pill is available here and so far i've had no luck with any chemists or doctors in Brisbane. If you are in Australia, would you be able to tell me how and where you got it from?? Thanks.

For all the women out there, just some advice, I am 38 yrs old, would never dream of getting the depo shot. If God didn't want us to have a period, he wouldn't have given it to us, the period cleans your system out. Think about it, all of those unfertilized eggs lying inside of you along with all of that blood, how can that ever be healthy. So, if you are getting the shot to stop your period, think twice, I would rather bleed for 30 days than to not bleed at all and believe me, I have been doing that lately.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Wow! So glad I read your message. I was on depo for almost 5 years before my husband and I decided to get pregnant. While on depo for these 5 years, I never had any issues aside from some minor weight gain. After my son was born in October, I waited to get back on depo until he was three months old. Since receiving my first shot back in mid January, I have been spotting. It's now the second wee in May and I am still having break through bleeding. I'm so frustrated. Most recenly my doctor put me on hormones to induce a period and then he wanted me to get my next depo shot. At this point, I'm really gun-shy on doing the next shot. I'm beginning to rethink depo, even though I had such great success with it before I got pregnant with my son.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
i took the depo in 97 have not had a period since then. i have gained a good 60 pounds and cant loose it. i am very emotional. i have all the hair gain problems, have dark spots under my arms and around the back of my neck. i have tried different things nothing has worked, but i have still yet to give up. i have had suicidal thoughts. hot flashes feel like im going thru menopause at 26, since i was 15. i have taked premarin it helped but then it stopped, taken birth control pills. and a drug i found online called fertility blend, it does work. helps you feel normal again, i had side affects on it, moody but if youve dealt with it as long as i have you are used to it. and if you are wanting children it may help.... i have not had any yet, but have not giving up yet. i hope my message can help anyone that reads it, feel free to write back, and i do believe that the depo does cause pcos!!! i am living proof. i have all the signs and no one in my family has ever had pcos i had a normal life before the shot. beware it is not worth it !!! charity from mississippi

So good to hear someone is experiencing the same side effects! I thought I was going crazy. I was on depo for 7 years and just recently came off of it, I was actually due for my last injection April 13, 2008. Since that date, I have been very nauceous, very tired, spacey, MOODY- to the point where I can't be around anyone, I feel like I am just out of it. Some doctors say that it's normal because it's almost like a withdrawl. I started taking YAZ, hopefully that will help. The feeling is terrible. If I would have known it was this hard, I would have stayed on the shot! have you noticed it getting any better since your last post?

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I am sorry to read your stories and I hope they are recorded by the medical professionals out there. I know this noticeboard is for DP horror stories, but I hope the Dr's take note of my story also - Depo Provera has been my hero! After yrs of struggling to control my periods, pain, energy levels and weight on the pill, I was put on DP because the pill had actually caused me to become anaemic and struggle to actually absorb iron or calcium. It was not uncommon for me to have a heavy period which could last 2 weeks - initially it took 3 months to stop bleeding (only to start up again a week later). On Depo, I had no bleeding, no pain, returned levels of energy which inturn allowed me to manage my weight. NO Symptoms - Unreal. Until a gyno who was totally against the use of DP took me off it and told me it was causing my Polycystic Ovaries (Not PCOS - just PCO). She put me back on the pill and HRT despite my medical history - which caused me to have violent mood swings, heavy painful bleeding, constantly feeling tired and lethargic, reduced sex drive, PMT and for the first time in my life - Migraines. I later discovered that my PCO was more likely to have been inherited by my mother and not caused by the Depo. I have been putting up with the effects of the pill for 3 yrs now and a few mths ago, my monthly migraine lasted 3 weeks! THAT's IT I said to my husband - I can't cope with this anymore. My GP agrees and she has put me back on the depo -she believes it is the only way I can get my quality of life back and apart from now being in my 30's she has ensured that I heed the warning about osteoporosis which can be caused by DP but insists that I just need to make sure I get enough calcium. As I said before - different strokes for different folks ladies - it might be the wrong solution for you, but there are ladies out there like me where Depo IS the only solution. I wish you all the best with finding the right solution for you and hope that Dr's look at both sides.

I too was diagnosed as hypothyroid around the same time i got my first shot of depo. i have trouble regulating my thyroid.I had palpitations, panic attacks high blood pressure at times absolutely no libido. was due to have 4th shot last week but opted not to have it hoping all the other symptoms would go away. Dr's all have me believing it's all in my head, but i think it's all related to dp. I loved not having period but i don't think all the side effects were worth it. I wish the docs would be honest with side effects they told me only 1% of people have any side effcts from dp. i would not reccomend to anyone

Hi everyone
Afte doing a search I came across this forum and wanted to tell you my story. I have been on Depo fo 4.5yeas, yes that long because the doctor that gives it to me every 3 months never told me the problems that I might have. After moving and seeing a new doctor he was shocked that I was on it for so long and told me to come off asap. So my needle was due 31st Mach, since then I have all the pregnancy symptoms. I have the swollen breasts, sore nipples, swelling of the stomach, nausea all day, increase in appetite (not that I need that since I put on 25 kilos in 4.5 years) It is playing on my mind and yes no sign of a peiod which is really weid for me because when my needle was due I always got a peiod. Two doctor pregnancy tests have come back negative but I feel horible. Afte reading everyone elses story there is me in all of you, maybe now I will be nicer to my husband and not a cranky %$% all the time.Has anyone else had these symptoms when they stopped the needle and when did they stop. Good luck everyone, Lets hope we all eturn to normal soon.
