Hey there...
You poor thing, sounds terrible. You've probably already read plenty about it but thought I'd remind you that plenty of women bleed continuously on depo, & from what I've heard it's not regular blood. I'm not qualified to comment on the different colours - if that were me I'd be heading back to the doc for peace of mind.
I would definitely encourage you to consider a different method of bc - I don't believe any oral contraceptive has these effects. Be prepared though to suffer through the crazy hormonal & sometimes scary withdrawal that many of us are suffering though. Hope that doesn't deter you from ceasing depo, you'll have to do it sooner or later & it's probably best while your young.
When I began depo my doc told me that many women bleed the whole time, & if you do it the first time there's a very good chance it will continue with each shot, it is not for everyone. I remember him also saying he was happy enough to give it to me as I'd already concieved a child, he didn't like giving it to young, childless women.
I would forget about sueing hun, but I'd definitely consider getting a new doc if you're at all concerned about her professional performance as a doc. This all should be the last of your worries at such a young age (I'm 29), I really wish you all the best.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I got on the depo shot sometime last October (2007), and almost immediately after I had the shot I had my period every single day until the second shot which is 11 weeks after the first.

I told my gyno docter what was happening and she told me that it would go away after the next shot. So I took her word and got the second shot sometime in January I believe?

Anyways it did NOT stop, infact it got worst. I got off the shot in March, because I couldn't deal with it. I lost my sex drive, I hated all men. My blood is BLACK, not brown its BLACK and it itches like a yeast infection. I can't explain it. It's not liquid, it's almost like cottage cheese but it dries so fast. I can't wear any feminine products, it doesn't soak. I have had to deal with just toilet paper, and ruining a LOT of clothes, and i'm not exactly the richest person.

Now i'm starting to like guys again, and my hormones are going INSANE. It is now October and I have still had my period since January/Marchish. But I see some differences. I have gotten 2 days off randomly, only twice. And after those two days the blood will become almost like a flourescent red, really bright. And then the flow is so heavy and constant, I swear to god i've been constantly bleeding for about 10 months. I don't know if this relates to depo provera but I've been losing a lot of weight and becoming more light headed.

I'm 17, and I've been thinking about maybe taking a different form of birth control just to stop this period, if anyone could offer me any ideas please contact me.

I haven't had any cramps, I have been pretty depressed, I lost a lot of weight. I just want this to end. What am I going to do?

I'd just hate to have a relationship with a guy and then have to tell him you can't do anything cos you're (thing) has been bleeding for a year. Can we sue? My doctor is NOT doing her job. And this is humuliating me

I had my last shot in Jan 08, after several years on & off. Never got a period on it at all, effectively been off 6 months & still haven't had any.
The last 2 weeks however I've had incredibly tender breasts, small amount of milky discharge, stomach cramps, intense mood swings (crying at nothing), lower back pain etc. 2 neg hpts, had blood tests last week & got results today saying I'm not pregnant (had myself convinced I was, with those symptoms!)& my prolactin levels are fine, thyroid's ok etc. Doc saw discharge first hand today & re-ordered tests to be absolutely sure - then will start on Juliet pill to regulate periods, hormones & hopefully moods! He's also ordered breast u/s as a precaution, but as both discharge comes from both breasts he doesn't think cancer is probable.
I knew that depo would bugger up my hormones, & at the time I was happy to have no periods. It's not until you come off that you realise the severity of how badly it can screw your hormones up. Not wanting to have periods or get pregnant is one thing, going through all this is something else. From what I've read previously it does not cause infertility - it's now a waiting game... which I could deal with if it weren't for the other horrible side effects.
Has anyone else experienced the discharge? Still so hard for me to believe I'm not pg (even though I haven't yet had a period) - when I was pg with my 8yr daughter was the only time my breasts have ever felt like this! I'm hoping the pill will help, has it improved side effects for anyone else?

I too have been affected adversely by this drug! It is POISON! And yet, the drug companies dole it out because it makes them MONEY! Its always about MONEY, even if it is at the expense of our health and those who love us!

If you use MySpace, PLEASE come and share your experiences and help me to warn other women about this poison before it leads and leaves them down the same path it led and left ALL of us! I can't do it on my own, but as they say, there is power in groups!

hi, i took depo sept 8,08.i never had spotting as my OB gyne said but she did explained it to me i may experience or maybe not,it depends on my body reaction. My concern now is that im having pimples on my cheek which i never had before and really made me depress.I'm planning to consult to a Derma doctor now,Do you think i need that or just wait 3 months and see if it is really caused by DEPO. I am so sad and feel so ugly because of this pimples i have now...Misserikarivera, is anything u did to help ur pimples disappear????i badly need your opinion..I swear not to have another shot, that would be the first and last shot...

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I was having stabbing pain in my lower right abdomen for about 3 years. I saw many doctors about it and had many tests done, and all they could come up with is that I have ovarian cysts. I met my new doctor about 7 months ago and she did a Laporoscopy and determined that I have a very bad case of endometriosis. Well about a month or 2 after my surgery I was still was having bad pains, so my doc suggested that I take a six month course of the depo lupron shot which I guess is the newer version of depo provera (w/out weight gain). After reading the side effects I instantly did not want to get it, but my relationship with my fiance was not doing 2 good because I was ALWAYS in pain. I was stupid and about a month after thinking about the shot ...I got ONE injection. That was the worst mistake I have ever made in my life!!! Now, the pain is still there, periods last 15 days...w/heavy bleeding, I have lost 15 pounds because I am so depressed ALL the time I can't even eat (now I only weigh 120 lbs), and I lost my sex drive all together! I have been w/ my fiance over 5 years and he means the world to me...I love him to death! But our relationship is suffering, I turned into a completely different person. I am so moody ALL the time and never feel like doing anything. I WILL NOT get the next shot, and if ANYONE reading this is thinking about getting it...TAKE MY WORD...DO NOT DO IT!!! My life has made a change for the worst thanks to the shot that is suppose to be so great!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I’m in the same situation with you. I’m 17 and I’ve been getting the depo injection since June ’08. For the first 2 months after my first injection I had a little bit of light spotting and just a little bit crampy but it didn’t bother me for a while. After my 2nd injection I completely lost my period but I was still getting the cramps but I was told that was normal and it should stop after a couple of weeks, it did and I thought everything was good because I hadn’t gotten my period and I lost my cramps but 2 weeks ago I got my period again and I still have it. I’m seeing my doctor on Wednesday because this is really unusual for me. Low iron runs in my family so im getting blood tests to check my iron because ive had heavy bleeding for 2 weeks. I’m considering not getting my 3rd injection because I don’t think its right for me as I suffer from bad depression, stress and anxiety. If I had read about the injection more I don’t think I would of gotten it in the first place.
I'm not the same person as i was before this injection i think its messing with me mentally.

hey littlejay212003, I'm experiencing the same thing. I got a depo shot in January of '08. I didn't like it and didn't get another one. I haven't had a period since May. they put me on hormones in August...nothing happened. I am now on a birth control pill, Femcon Fe, to see if that will start my period. Doctor (NOT the B*tch that put me on the depo) said I'm not producing enough estrogen. Now I'm scared..

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
ok. heres my story. I first took depo back in 2001. I was about 15 at the time. For the first 3 months i was constantly bleeding. Then all of a sudden i didn't have any more periods. It was great at first. But then I realised that it really wasnt good for my body. So, I stopped taking it. I was off of it for a couple years then in June 2007, I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst about 3 inches wide. So therefore I had to have surgery to get it removed. After surgery, I was also diagnosed with endometriosis. So the next visit to my gynocologist, he recommended me taking depo again. At first I refused. But he said that it would be best because it will one, help with the bleeding, two, help with the pain of the endometriosis, and three, I wont have to worry about getting pregnant. So I decided to try it again. The next shot was just like the first, I bled for 3 months. With extra terrible pain. Then the next shot was supposed to stop my periods completely. But of course, it didn't. I was spotting alot. And I was always in a bad mood. Never felt like doing anything but be lazy all the time. I would snap at people for no reason. I didnt ever feel like talking to anyone. I was very emotional all the time. My family thought I was on hard drugs or something. And now, I have been off the shot for about a year. But it still seems like I am still on it, cuz all these symptoms keep coming back. You never know when I will have a good day or not. I may be cool for a couple days, then just one day out of the blue, I just feel like everything is wrong. And I start snapping at people again for no reason. I even get so mad or so emotional sometimes where the only thing I do all day is cry. And once again, for no reason. It is causing problems in my relationship with my boyfriend that I love more than anything in this world. And I just wanna go back to being the old me. The happy person that I used to be. I really miss that alot. I feel like a part of me is missing now.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Wow this Depo injection has got to be the worst decision I have ever made. I am 22 and I have been on the injection since April 2008 and have just had my 3rd injection. I orginally went on it because I was spotting nearly everyday whilst on my birth control. I was put ont the Depo because my gyno was convinced that I had a mild case
of Endometriosis. She said that the Depo would shut everything down so I would not bleed at all...what BULL! I have had the worst side effects I have ever experienced. I already suffer from bipolar and the Depo has sent me absolutely haywire. I'm so moody and angry all the time, I don't even know who I am and I have lost an interest in having sex. My relationship suffers because of this. My job is also suffering as I am constantly in a bad mood and in pain. I have gained about 5kgs (12 pounds) which isn't so bad but I'm wondering if I will gain anymore. After each injection I bleed for 3 months straight starting from the 4th - 7th week. My gyno says that the bleeding should settle but I am not so sure.
My gyno doesn't want to send me in for surgery to get the Endometriosis checked out becuause she reckons there is no need to but I am very concerned that I am not treating the problem properly without a clear diagnosis.

I'm wondering if I should just go off everything, no pills, not injections and see how I go. Then again I don't want the risks of getting pregnant.

What a mess!!!!

to Clover - sorry, but I don't know where you are getting your numbers from. Over 70% of women taking it have severe short-term symptoms worldwide. Plus the osteoporosis, cancers etc which can take decades to happen. On top of this there are women who after 10 years start to have massive problems. I was told about spot bleeding as a possible side-effect. nothing else. no other drug with that rate of problems is legal.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
well, it's been 8 months since I had my shot and I bled heavily for 7 months, like fighting to stay conscious. Now the bleedings stopped, and I just feel tired and every muscle in my body hurts, and I still get cramps. I went to the doctor and I've been taking iron tablets, but nothing much has changed. I have a two year old and a baby and I'm moving house. I can barely walk across the street, even while I'm not taking kids. I can't do this anymore and I'm sick of the pain, and all I hear is that "Depo shouldn't do that", or keep waiting for the iron to work for longer. I've been on the iron for a month now and nothing much is different. It should be coming out of my body now, so only now I might be able to recover. I hope. My back really hurts and my whole body hurts. I can barely even do a load of washing and I haven't left the house for months, and I think my daughter is getting sick of it. There is something in depo. It's not like the pill. But that's what they all say.

my gf is presently on depo vera...this is her 9th month. I have noticed severe mood swings toward the end of the three month cycle. This woman is usually very calm and reserved. Now she flies off the handle at the drop of the hat. This will be her last injection, if we are still together by the completeion of this cycle

I cant afford to not take any form of birthcontrol because it helps me with cycle. I missed so much school because of my cycle it was a miricle i passed. I just dont know what to do! I also heard that if you stay on the shot for so many years you may not be able to have children i dont know thats true or not. Please someone help me.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I had the deprovera shot back in 2002 when i was 15 years old, i thought it would be the best method of birth control for me as i definitly didnt want to get pregnant. It was the worst desision i could have made!.

I only had one shot when i began to have extreme depression and suicidle thoughts, needless to say i never went back for another, after the 3 months when the shot should have worn off i begun bleeding. At first it was a normal period lasting 5 days but then 3 days after my period had finished i began bleeding a dark reddy brown tar like substance this would continue eveyday till towards the end of my cycle when eventually my period would begin again.Along side this i suffered debilitating cramps thoughout my cycle!! This lasted from jan 2003 to dec 2003, i never visited my doctor as i was terrified they would resort to hyst *** omy, I was so ill that i lost loads of time off school and eventually i was dismissed, All i could do was sleep and cry it was terrible!.

My boyriend stayed with me despite us being only 16 and lack of sex, i suppose he helped me get through it.

Once my bleeding had stopped i felt confident enough to go on the pill and get my life back, but the fact that i could have irreversable damage still lingered, although i didnt want any children for along time, i knew that oneday i wanted to be a mother.

Luckily though god sent me a gift, we descovered i was pregnant april 2005. Although our daughter was unplanned and came as a huge surprise i feel VERY lucky to have her.

my partner and i have been together for 7 years now and i thankgod every day for the devotion my partner has shown me and the beautiful daughter we have despite everything.

I often wonder though whether my pregnancy was just a 'miracle' and that in the future when we try for another we will have problems??

please can anyone tell me what my chances for infertility are? would they have noticed any issues with my uterus or ovaries when i was pregnant?

I took depo in 1991/2 and was on it for a year. My GYN recomended it to me after suffering from heavey periods and period pain which will sometimes cause me to faint. I was 67kg when i started depo and gained 40kg+ over that year, i never went back to that GYN as he never told me the side affects. We are now in 2008 and i am still battling to loose the wait, i have now joined weight watchers and have been their now about 10weeks, i have lost .5kg over the 10 weeks and that is very hard to swallow when you sit in the meetings and listen how someone lost 1-3kg the week and you just gain. I have also joined the gym last week and when i went to weigh in on saturday i picked up 1.8kg. Before i went on depo provera i lost 40kg with a weightloss programme, as soon as i saw i was gaining weight i started the same programe but this time it did not work, i could not even lose 1kg. Every time i go to the doctors complaining about my weight they say it is because i don't excercise and it is not the depo because it is out of my system, sorry i don't believe that, otherwise i would not have had this problem trying to lose the weight. I hope you are sucessfull and are able to have another child, unfortunately we can't have kids.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
this is my story
I have only had three injections and since those three injections I have transformed into a she devil.
These injections have changed my moods to where I get so violent that I want to kill my partner’s friends. I have to go to hypnotist to try and take control of my anger.
I have put on so much weight; my beautiful long blonde hair has turned to slept end hell. I have turned into an alcoholic so that I can be me, a once happy go getter. I have warned people don’t do it. My relationship is almost at an end.
This is like taking poison, and for what, not to have children. I would rather have children and being awake at night, my wage going on the child then living this nightmare of hell.
I have liver damage, my hands shake. I need this poison to leave my body so that I can get control of my life.
And keep warning people don’t do it
