I amdeeply destressed after reading some of the issues with depo effecting fertilaty I was first prescribed it in 1999 after having my son and I was 19. I was given the info fact sheet and read it and nowhere do I remember reading that it was a sterilizing drug. I have also expressed my wishes to have more children since to my doctor who said if I was not considering children in the near future say the next 12mths then I should be fine. After being on this drug for over 2 yrs I am wondering if I am fine? I like others was not informed of this 'side effect' but after reading some of your comments I am very concerened and will be talking to my doctor this saturday in my follow - up appointment for my ever growing cyst which also maybe caused by the injection. My doctor seems to be acknowledging this by suggesting me not having my next injection. Although he is not openly blaming the injection I suspect it is what he is thinking.

I have been taking depo for 2yrs and I thought I was lucky to have minimal side effects.... little did I know. I was so busy with work and kids and my partner I never stopped to add it all up until my last injection. I forget almost everything and since June I started a daily diary. I am constantly tired and irritable I have manic mood swings. I am lathargic and could sleep the day away easily. I also have a very short fuze especially with my partner and become snappy and then cry at the drop of a hat. I have the occassion cramp but no period which I thought was great until we started talking about having a child. I am concerened that it will take some time before I can concieve although on the up side when I have been late with my injection because I forgot about it I have gotten a period pretty much straight away. The last time I was on Depo I found a lump in breast and thought nothing of it until this time when I just found another lump in the other breast they are both negative for cancer cells and are cysts but still it makes me wonder... did depo contribute to this? I am not having another injection mainly out of fear as I am 28 and want to have another child I can't afford the risk.
I always grew up believing everything in moderation and even withthis contraception I think this applies it is not a long term solution and for the first 6mths it's fine but have a break after that and access yourself. Keep a diary so you can gauge your mood swings.

My daughter had her first depo injection in Sept, 2008.
She is 18, so I did not talk to the doctor before the decision was made.
She started having severe mood swings and problems with her boyfriend. She destroyed things and hit him.
He would call me for help. He was afraid of her. She would get better, they would get back together then something would happen and she would go into a rage. They always reconciled. Then one night she was driving with her boyfriend, she was angry and started hitting him. She came to stop, he jumped out, then she hit the car in front of her. 2 days later, she goes into a rage, kicking holes in walls, throwing things, screaming, then she ran off. We found her 3 hours later, walking along a ditch. On Dec. 8, she went to see her boyfriend, he called me saying she was out of control, so I went to get her. She took off, but I found her walking home. She relunctantly got into the car, and started yelling at me, calling me names, etc. She calmed down after a while and was able to sleep. She was fine in the morning and went to school to take a final exam. She called after the test and said she did well. When she got home she seemed agitated while talking on the phone. She started yelling that she wanted to kill him or kill herself. I tried to calm her down but she ran out of the house, got her bike and took off. I left to look for her. I drove by his apartment, then to his workplace, then back to his apartment and spotted her bike. He came home, we found her in a storage closet off the patio, burning charcoal(affixiation). I tried to pull her out. She kicked, hit, bit, I held on, but she got away. She went home and took a bunch of pills. I called 911 and now she is in a psych hospital. This is a nightmare. Something needs to be done

Hello my bname is Shameeah Alicia i am also 18 years old your story kind of amused me because you are my age and i did get pregnant but it was before i had gotten on depo. it all started when i had told my mother and then i had gotten an abortion. let me tell you experiencing the psycological fact of a teenager let alone anyone going through that is hurtful.and still til this day i get sad thinking about it at times. my first few injections didn't effect me as much. the begining symptoms were irregular periods and moody behavior. but around my fourth injection the symptoms had gotten worser over the course of time. Headaches, dizziness, nasea, bloating, rashes on face, between legs, fatigue, dry mouth, shortness of breath because i would suffer from sever anxiety and depression, hard time going to sleep or staying up, memory loss, increase in body hair, ex. hair on face more like thick visible peach fuss though, libido, abdominal discomfort when on period, spots on face, change in appetite, loosing hair strings hanging at the ends that i could pull them out constanly. sooon i will be off this poison i wouldn't reccommend this drug to any one not even my closest enemy. TAKE DEPO PROVERA OFF THE MARKETS NOW!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I received my first shot in Early September 08, 6 1/2 weeks after having my third child, as I did not want to go on the pill as I am prone to Depression and postnatal depression. My Dr recommended this and wrote a script, told me to fill it and gave me the shot straight away - Didn't give me time to think really! Three days later I got my period - I called him as I had never gotten my periods so early after having my babies and breastfeeding. He told me nothing to worry about, just my normal period. 11 days later, still bleeding I called him again - this time he blamed the breastfeeding for my long period!!!! Hello, again never happened whilst breastfeeding before. I called a maternity nurse at my hospital and she told me to get checked if still going in a few days time. They finally finished after 17 days. Didnt get them again for all of October, started again beginning of November, again 16 days long!! I have decided not to get the next shot and hopefully my periods will go back to normal at some stage- but I have also been noticing I get angry very quickly and my patience level is very limited which I think may be due to the shot as well - has anyone else experienced agressiveness whilst on this shot?? And no libido to speak of this whole time..my poor husband!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I only had the depo shot for a year -- maybe a year and a half? I was in college and sexually active and certainly did not want to have an "accident". I started the shot as a college freshmen, very athletic (school track team and ROTC with morning workout) and I ate pretty well (6 small protien rich meals a day; minimal snacking; I didn't drink much then either). By the time I stopped the shot, I had jumped from 140lbs to 175-180lbs. I am 5'7" so it didnt look horrible but it has been hell since to try to get it off. I stopped taking the shot in 2003/2004 and in 2006 I finally got below 150lbs.

Aside from weight, I had issues with getting pregnant. My husband and I were married in 2006 and wanted to have kids before I was 28. I am 25, almost 26 and we use no contraceptives and I am not pregnant. He and I were both tested to see if there were fertility issues and none appear to be present. I will not attribute all of the infertility to the depo shot since there are many couples who are fertile but its just not their time, but I am absolutely sure the weight gain was a side effect.

Please please be careful. I was a silly 18 year old girl that has paid for a quick solution.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I got my first and ONLY shot on September 24, 2008. I have been bleeding for about 43 days straight. This was a total nightmare for me because it prevented me from doing normal things like working out due to lack of engry. Forget about sex!!! I also had cramps almost everyday. So after a few calls to my doctor trying to find ways to get this drug out of my system. My doctor put me on Premarin 0.625 mg for about 7 day, on the third day the bleeding stopped! I was so happy, but once the pills ran out the bleeding started again. So I want back on the Premarin for 7 more day but at that point it wasn't helping and doctor wouldn't prescribe it to me for 3 months. I thought it would offset whatever the depo was doing to my body. So I went online to find some help. On every site all I kept reading was there is no reversal drug to get the depo out of your system.

So I started a natural remedy that helped stop the bleeding! I took 2 tablespoons of Apple Cinder Vinegar and mixed it with a half cup of orange juice three times a day with a straw. Trust me once you notice that your bleeding has slowed down or in my case stopped you are not worried about the taste. Plus taking it down with a straw really helps.

I also found out in the mist of all of this that I had a polyp.
A polyp can cause heavy or irregualr menstraul bleeding.
So this may have added to the heavy bleeding I was having while on the depo. So you may want to look into to this as well.
I hope this information helps, because lord knows I prayed for an answer to this problem.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I have been on depo provera for 13 years.

Up until recently I can't complain. No periods, moodiness, small (2 kilos) weight gain, no babies...

For the past few months I have not been myself....

I am suffering severe anxiety, no sex drive, depression and insomnia. It won't go away.

I recently spoke to a friend who told me of her similar story. She stopped taking the injection and had her tubes tied. She said it took 3 months to feel better. She has never regretted the decision to cease taking it.

Until her gp diagnosed the contraceptive as the cause of her mental state, her family had her seeing psychiatrists and were administering a mixture of counter-productive mood stabilizers. She had no idea her contraception was causing it.

I have 2 months to wait for this last injection to wear off. I don't know how long it will take to feel better...

For what it's worth. It took 12 years for any adverse effects to show. Sadly I have only just recently learnt of the bone density problem. That's just great... With a family history of osteoporosis and my early teenage years spent with anorexia... my odds are not that great...

mmmmmmmm

I was on depo-provera for 6 and a half years after my son was born and never experienced any side effects. Six months later my beautiful daughter was born and after her birth i still used depo-provera. The way I see it-its more convenient not to have my periods. I never experienced any side effects-except for a little weight gain. Currently I am still on depo-provera but with a calcium supplement-depo- does have the tendency to deteriorate your bones. It is a good form of birth control if you are a forgetful person- like I am-thats why I take it-an injection every three months. I think the benefits outweigh the risks.

I began Depo in May 2008...I did my 3rd shot this past October. I regret doing depo and getting the 3rd shot bc I knew something wrong was going on with my body, but I did the 3rd dose anyways. Since I've been on it, I've been overly moody/ emotional and possibly depressed. I hate it and I feel like it affects not only me, but my relationship with my bf. He doesn't seem to mind..He rather see me moody than not pregnant. It's my body though that its effecting so the decision is on me to stop it. I've had on and off spotting that was light to heavy. I havent had any weight gain, hair loss, or any other side effects. I want this stuff out of my body ASAP. I've read that it can take be 6 months to a year before the horomone is completely out of your system and the periods return to normal. Is this really true??? I had a normal period before n just went on it strictly for bc method. I am also scared of becoming infertile in the future. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to rid the stuff out of the body sooner????

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
So what I wanted to add. When depo was first around in the 60s it was predominantly used as population control in 3rd world countries & in the UK on teen & adult mentally disabled girls & women. The idea was that it was a simple method for creating permanent sterility after a series of injections.

My point is, its always been known, for over 40 years, that sterility is a massive side effect.

I first heard about it when I lived in the UK in the 80s. A woman who had worked in disability services for decades had told me all about its uses & purposes in her industry. I thought it sounded perfect for me. My periods were happening every 3 to 6 months & were hospitalising me each time. I just wanted them gone for good. At that time I was late teens early 20s & as I wasnt mentally disabled, the UK doctors refused to prescribe it to me.

When I came back to Aust in the early 90s I immediately started asking doctors about it. But it was still a couple of years before I found one who would prescribe it & I had to sit a psych test first to prove beyond doubt to them that I did not want children. There was still the mentality of 'you are in your early 20s, you cant possibly know' that I had to fight.

Yes it disturbs me that women get incorrect info from medicos. I certainly dont take everything my doctor says as gospel. Hell mine misdiagnosed me so many times last year I almost died from blood poisoning. They are not perfect. We are lucky that these days we have the benefit of the internet to make our own research on everything.

I would never doubt that women are having these side effects, & I would never belittle the effects they are having on them. When the injection works, it works brilliantly. And it does so for me so I added my experiences here. But as with all medications and birth control methods, its different with every women. What worked on my friends didnt work on me. What works on me may not work on them.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
No disrespect taken Jackie. The whole point of an open forum is to share stories.

When I first got a computer in the mid 90s one of the first things I started googling (well back then it was alta vista -ing) was depo. For so long I was basically one of only 2 people I knew who was on depo and planning to stay on it long term. So yes I was on it pre-internet. To be able to find forums later and discuss it with other women was great.

At that time I found many many forums filled with women who loved depo and where like me - planning for long term use. I only found a couple of forums about major side effect issues and every single person in the dissatisifed group fell into the "given between pregnancies" and "given as a teen" category.

The rest of us were extremely shocked as we all stated to each other that from the paperwork we were given prior to getting the injections you would never prescribe it to either category. We all agreed our paperwork confirmed sterility as a pretty major side effect - and in our cases it was the side effect we personally were looking forward to.

So 13 or 14 years later I am still shocked to hear its being prescribed to women (and girls) in those categories. And over the years when friends and co workers have asked me about the injection I have specifically only recommended it if they do not plan to have children in the future and on 2 occasions I have talked women out of getting it prescribed for their teens who they felt it would help their promiscuity - I reminded them it didnt actually cure STDs !

The reason I mentioned people not fully informing themselves is because I have been quite shocked at the amount of women over the years who have admitted they never read any literature prior to having the injection, nor had they ever read the huge sheet of paper that is actually inside the injection box. It contains a patient info sheet and a practitioner info sheet.

Sorry out of room ! will add more later.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Also I think it is really hard to trust these doctors with advice, When I asked about the needle I was told there nothing wrong with it. When I went to another doctor to ask (after the panic attack incident) she said there was nothing wrong with the contraceptive and i asked her about the heart palpatations she said no that shouldnt happen it is probably just you being anxious and worried and causing yourself to have a panic attack (for 5 hours??) so i asked her if she had read the information on the product and if she could show me, when she did it clearly said on it that it may cause heart palpatations etc etc... hmm..interesting. I had another doctor argue with me that the implant was not what was causing me to feel strange and moody and i had to demand he remove it from my arm which automatically made me feel better (it may have been too strong for me) so i really wonder about these doctors and theyre advice about contraception...

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I got on depo about 4 yrs ago and it worked great the first time, i didnt get my periods for over a yr, i didnt get pregnant, i didnt put on any weight it all seemed fine i got the needle twice. I got off it and went back on it a year later I don't know if there is different brands or what happened but as soon as I got the needle 5 minutes later my heart was beating fast i couldnt breathe properly
i felt like i was going to have a heart attack it was very scary this went on for about 5 hours!! After that i gained abit of weight nothing extreme just abit which i lost a few months after exercising and eating right. contraceptive wise this was great and it also took away my periods and mood swings the only problem was the crazy panic attack, i got pregnant a year and half after getting off the needle and wanted to go back on it but have been scared of what side effect it could cause this time..it is scary bcos its irreversible and u cant just take it out..
2 of my friends had worser experiences, one of them had just lost alot of weight then she went on the needle and put alot of weight on and had ongoing periods, my best friend got on the needle and became bigger than i have ever seen her, she got acne and her periods became irregular.
it is hard to know how the needle will effect you and as it happened to me i realised it wont always give you the same side effects which is quite scary. It seems so hard to find a decent contraceptive that will work!!!!!!!
Why cant they make needles and implants for the men to kill the sperm before it comes out!? dont we woman have enough on our plates? lol..

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I am 21 and have been on depo since I was 18 with a small three month break in between years. Although my experiences have not been as bad as some...I gained over a hundred pounds in that two years without any major changes in diet or activity level. I started feeling random cramps but no bleeding occurred and have had extremely erratic periods. This past July I came to the conclusion that my weight was out of control and got a personal trainer. I weighed in at 290 pounds and plunged into the diet/exercise thing pretty hardcore. I've lost around 45 pounds, it now being November by eating less than 1400 calories a day and working out around ten hours a week. However, I was recently informed that Depo (and other forms of birth control), trick your body into thinking it's pregnant. Not only are most women unable to lose weight on depo, but most either gain or lose drastic amounts. Because the shot makes your body hoard body fat (as it thinks it's pregnant), even if you do not gain weight, most of your body's muscle ends up turning to fat. It also becomes ridiculously difficult to get rid of body fat. In losing 45 pounds, I have only lost 3 percent body fat with the average for that amount being between five and seven percent. My shot expires in December and I will not be continuing my injections. Unforunately, I have also learned that it can take up to EIGHT MONTHS for the progesterone from the shot to be cleared out of your body so my efforts of losing weight may not get any easier for almost a year. If you're thinking about going on the shot PLEASE find something else (the ring also has a huge list of horrible side effects and fatal possibilities). By the way...if anyone has advice on how to get the hormones to clear through your body more quickly, please email me at breathedeeplylivepassiona tely@yahoo.com

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I actually have issues with a few of your comments. No disrespect, but do you have anything to back up your claims that women who think Depo is brilliant are in fact the majority? May I remind you at this point that you have not stopped having the injections, thus you cannot really comment on the horrible effects people such as myself have after coming off. Like you, I thought it was great for the years that I was on it - it is only now that it's begun wreaking havoc on my body.

Second, to state that anybody not fully informed before taking Depo only have themselves to blame... what about the hundreds of stories of YOUNG (& I mean adolescent) women being given the drug, either under the influence of over protective parents or by their own choosing, at an age where their brain is still developing, in terms of making impulsive decisions and emotional responses. Is that their own fault? What about the women that began taking it pre-internet or before the wealth of information became available? I for one do NOT remember ever reading that Depo leads to sterility on any of the paperwork I saw, in fact it contradicts that (as did the GP) by stating it was merely a matter of time for fertility to return.. in fact that is still what the 'experts' say.

As for only giving it to women that didn't intend to reproduce - I was one such woman, but people & circumstances change. I have since decided that I'd like another child one day. Oops, too bad, I did not fully inform myself - must be my own fault for trusting a doctor I'd been seeing for years. My bad.

I'm glad you intend on staying on it until menopause - if I didn't want to have another child one day, or hadn't decided that I wanted to be in greater control of my body & no longer have synthetic hormones injected into me, I would have done the same & perhaps wouldn't be suffering the consequences!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
My thoughts are that if someone is disatisfied with any product - they will vocalise it.But if someone is happy with something - they very rarely speak out.

So I will add my name to the minority on this thread (but let it be known we are in fact the majority out there in the big wide world) who think that Depo Provera is brilliant.

I have been on it non stop since 1993 - yes 15 years.

Prior to requesting it from my doctor I requested the info sheets that doctors are supplied. I read it thoroughly and asked my doctor further questions. I believe I was fully informed about the product. Anyone who chooses not to fully inform themselves about potential side effects of a medical product really has no one to blame other than themselves when side effects occur.

From day one I never had a period again - bliss.
From day one I never experienced PMS again - I use to be murderous.
From day one all "monthly" food cravings ceased.
From day one no more accidental pregnancies (after 3 occured whilst on the pill I had reached the stage of using abstinence as birth control).

I had some initial weight gain over the first couple of years - about 2 dress/bra sizes. I was expecting it as it was pretty clearly explained in the brochures. But seriously - in the scheme of things a little bit of extra flesh and fat is not the worst thing that can happen in life.

Around the last 2 weeks before each injection is due I get a bit of acne.

My main beef is with doctors who prescribe Depo to women who intend to have children. My belief is that it should only be prescribed to women like me who have no intention of breeding. Even back in 1993 the paperwork stated it could cause sterility - so why anyone would prescribe it "between pregnancies" is beyond me.

So for me personally DEPO RULES. I plan to stay on it till menopause.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
My doctor told me I couldn't use the patch anymore because I smoke, so she convinced me to go on the shot. She told me that few people experience weight gain and some bleeding... no mention of any mood changes. I am bipolar and have a panic disorder (she didn't check my chart to see this), and I got the shot 2 weeks ago. All of the sudden I was very depressed and agitated with everyone around me... I've spent the last 2 weeks laying around my house because I'm so depressed I'm exhausted. I figured I was going through a depressive episode (even though I haven't had one in 2 years). Then last night I had a mixed episode, which is a combination of both a manic episode and a depressive episode- I stayed up all night with extreme energy and racing thoughts, but was still horribly depressed. This is very rare in bipolar people my age. I talked to my psychiatrist and he told me that considering my illnesses I should have never been put on the shot. Through this board now I figured out I have 2 1/2 more months of this! I may have to drop out of school because I'm sleeping all day and my depression is so bad I can't force myself to do my school work.

Hi Ladies,

I went to my doctor a couple of months ago because I have recently gotten into a new relationship and I needed to start a form of contraception. Over my life I have tried 7 different types of contraceptive pills and they have had massive side effects for me so I wanted a better solution that would not cause the extreme hormonal imbalances that the pill does. My Doctor told me that Depo provera has no side effects and it was an easy solution. WRONG!!

I have also been bleeding every day since I got the injection. It has also varied between light bleeding to thick gluggy black blood. Plus I too have lost my sex drive and I feel unattractive and frumpy, when I was normal before. Thridly I have much oilier hair & last but definitely not least; my brain has practically completely stopped functioning at times. Yesterday I was having lunch with friends and nothing they were saying was registering in my mind. I then went to catch the tram home, which I catch everyday, and I went to the wrong street and got on a random different tram and ended up in the middle of nowhere panicing...I NEVER DO THINGS LIKE THAT! I am one of the most organized switched on people I know.

The conclusion to my story is that I will not be getting another injection and, as much as I hate them, condoms will have to do.

I hope i go back to normal soon because I feel like I am a brain dead Zombie now. Does anybody know if there is a cancelling out drug & if not does it really have as bad of a come down as some have said when you stop taking it?

LOL i thought that was a bit different!

It's definitely not entirely IMpossible, I personally know a girl that fell pregnant whilst ON depo.. however.. if you had a shot in August it will still be in your system until next month? Just don't get your hopes up too much, I know how much that sux to just be let down...

It's really great you haven't had any negative symptoms, & don't want to freak you out but I hadn't had any problems when I first came off either, it took 6 months before I really noticed anything, aside from the odd bad mood.
