Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I started getting the Depo injection in July 2006. I had 3 shots in total whih covered me for 9 months. The whole time I was on Depo, I never had a period. I then stopped getting it when I was due for my 4th dose. I stocked up on pads thinking I would get my period in the next few days and they never came. I only just got my first period back about 8 weeks ago, which it has been over 2 years since I have had a period. Now I am regretting ever getting the Depo injection as I have had my peroid 6 times in the last 8 weeks, and each time they get heavier and heavier. They are all over the place and I hate it. I would never advise anyone to get this injection. I am going to see the doctor in 2 days to see whats wrong with me, and I am hoping I can still have children as I am only 20 years old. I love kids more then anything (I also work with children) and if I can't have kids its going to kill me. So please don't get this injection.

Hi,

I have been on depo for 11 years, I am 38. Before i went on i was diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

Now the gyno is worried about being on it so long so trying some new iud instead soon....

Funny no doctors ever questioned the length of time i was on it nor asked for a bone density test...

I went on it suwe to cramping 3 weeks out of 4 and life has been great on it but not i have ot change partculary becasue of weight gain and now the bone risk

I have been on this shot for 6 months now and i am coming off it and trying another when i go back. I have had so many side effects, the worst being depression, anxiety and mood swings. I snap at anyone for anything and i cant go to the shops on my own or out on my own anywere as i get heart palputations and just want to get out as quick as i can. Its not a very nice thing to experience when your 19 but i cant wait to come off it and get back to my normal happy self!

Hi, my name is Melinda im 33 years old married for almost eightteen years. I got a horror storie for you i had my daughter in july 1992 a little while later i got the depo-provera every three months for times a year for a little over forteen years i became fully disabled in 1997. I have got cronic egsama, osteoporosis, ibs, nerve damage in both sides of my hips. I just heard about the black box warning, and I'm scared that all these symptoms was caused by the depo-provera. i got a tubal around motherdays in 2008 so i stop the depo before that my body is not right i hurt very bad i was all told that i had fibromyalgia i think it is frome the toxin of the depo. i hope more people think more about the depo shot now.

I am 16 years old and went on the depo to stop having my periods and so i couldn't get pregnant. I've only had one shot of the depo and after reading these stories i never want to have another shot of this drug in my life. I am suffering some of these bad side effects already and it has only been 2 months since having my first shot

I was on the Depo shot for about 1 1/2 years and I am 40 years old and just found out that I am post menopausal. I am way past pre menopausal and apparently have been in menopause for quite some time. I stopped getting the shot about 2 1/2 years ago and definateley blame it on that!!!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I was never on the depo shot but had very bad/ heavy bleeding that lasted weeks to non-stop and this included heavy clotting. After a year of this and already on anti-anxiety medication my gyno finally opted for an endometrial/ uterus ablation. It is a simple surgery that heats the inside of your uterus lining to thin it. Since my periods last three days and are so light I only need a pantie-liner. No more heavy bleeding or clotting, and keep in mind I was using depends pads at night to keep from waking up with bloodshed in my bed. I was 30 when I has the surgery and it has been about a year now since. I would ask your gyno about it. I also have state (low-income) insurance that covered the whole procedure.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
i was on the shot for a year and got off after coming out of the army. It took me only a year to have a baby, so dont worry it's nothing to freak out about. You can have kids. Try laying in bed with a pillow under your bottom to help the flow of sperm after intercource and keep track of ovulating days. Also keep in mind it does help to stay in bed for 30 minute or so after having intercource,

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I was on depo for 3 years until the end of 2001. During that time, I had (from looking back) mood swings, weight gain and blood spotting. I thought nothing of it at the time, but decided when I left the ex that I wouldn't be going back on it. 7 years later and I've just been diagnosed with early menopause. I'm now on triquestrens (HRT), after the mood swings, dryness everywhere and forgetfulness got so bad I wouldn't have gone much further. I believe the symptoms of before have led to my menopausal state. Also, at one stage I did try to get pregnant, to no avail.
Today, I will be checking my bone density, as well as how many eggs my ovaries have left, if any.
I can't help at the moment but blame depo for the situation I'm now in.

I don't think doctors will openly blame anything on depo : especially the ones that have all phamaceutical freebies in their offices. It might take away a golf outing or a free cruise.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I too have been screwed up by depo , Have your doctor do a free t3 and free t4 (thyroid hormone levels) also another one you might want to check is cortisol, dhea, acth. If he's a doc that would go that extra mile see if he'll do an iodine saturation level.
I have been trying to figure out the (what depo does) in our bodies and so far the only things I can come up with are these maybes
1) It displaces iodine in the body
or
2) since it suppresses cortisol production , that makes our thyroid work harder sometimes throwing us hyper.
Many people who have taken depo end up with thyroid disorders , fibromyalgia, pcos , and also alot of people have abnormal changes in pap test .
I say we all sue pfizer

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
i am 28 years old and mother of 4 children (5, 4, 3, and 9 months). after my 9 month old was born my husband and i opted for depo. it only took one injection and my hair started falling out in handfuls, i was exhausted but had insomnia, mood swings, paranoia. not knowing it was from the shot, i got my second shot. in 4 months i had gained 35 pounds (while breast feeding AND being on a low carb diet!). by this time i had been steadily bleeding for 4 months and passing large clots. when that shot wore off the doc put in a non-hormonal IUD. my hair stopped falling out and my weight gain leveled (45 lbs total). my child is now 9 months old and i have had menstrual-like bleeding every day of those 9 months. i am still passing large clots. the doctors cannot figure out how to stop it. they even tried putting me on a month of birth control pills with the iud still in to try and balance out my cycle. i bled heavier that entire month. now that month of pills is over and i am bleeding heaviest that i have since my child was born. we wanted to wait 5 years and try for another child but... i'm wondering if the shot has permanently ruined that for us. HELP!

I was on Depo Provera for 3 years with no problems at all while I was taking it or after I stopped. But my sister had the same problem you are talking about. She was only on it for a few months but it changed her whole personality. She was moody, mean and just wasnt herself at all. The only thing that fixed it was stopping the shot. In only a few days after not taking her last shot she was back normal.

I was in the same situation before I took birth control pills to regulate my period. I took the pills for six months and my period was regular for the whole six months. But 1 month after I stop taking the pills I went back to being irregular. Now I'm trying to have a baby and it's been really stressful.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Cysts are common in many women irregradless of whether they are on depo, sadly many, many women have trouble with fertility irregardless of their age and if they have had children previously.Like ALL forms of contraception you need to think seriously before you use ANY type of pills/medication THERE ARE OTHER VERY EFFECTIVE METHODS but many people decide they are too difficult.Barrier methods e.g condoms and diaphragms DO NOT have long lasting side effects and also protect against STD's.
