Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
At my appointment I was the one to mention any side effects, they were ready to just write the prescription. I intake tons of calcium and still ended up with terribly achey bones and joints. It wasn't until I was off the depo and had been taking calcium supplements for several months that I started to feel better. So obviously just drinking some milk and taking a multivitamin wasn't enough.

I think these forums are part of the "research" process. It is way more informative than reading some literature that the maker of the drug puts out. I had a terrible and life altering experience with this stuff and I feel like I have a responsibility to tell people, so they don't have to go thru it. And from what I see it seems like a pretty common issue at that.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I would strongly suggest that anyone who is considering depo to consider other options. I got on depo after the birth of my first child. I really trusted my doctor, and I told him I was concerned about possible side affects. He told me he felt it was safe and I ended up having a total of two injections. Immediately after I began feeling terrible pain in all of my joints. I ended up having to take calcium (eventually on the calcium the pain went away - it depletes your body of calcium), vitamin b because my cycle was so messed up (constantly spotting, and then suddenly nothing for months), but the worst is the anxiety. If there is ever a class action I am on that band wagon. It has been two years and I am still not myself without medication. I am seriously non functional. I have panic attacks, mood swings, and depression(GAD). I was NEVER anything like this before. Worst off I went to my doctor who I then immediately replaced, because he was NO help. Once I got a prescription the pharmacists bluntly says "oh yeah - depo's known for that". Don't trust your doctor to research the drugs they give you, or care what they do to you. Even the best doctor is going to fumble. Unfortunately for me, I've never been the same. Granted all medications affect people differently, but there are a lot of other options that do not have the chance of this kind of effect.

wow i have almost the same symptons expect im hvainq anxiety attacks depression stress heart papitations DIZZINESS nausea nervousness and thats about it im only 16 and this suck i cant wait to get off of this thing. but im just so scared that after im off the symptoms will come back. i cant sleep at night what so ever i have blackness under my eyes i really dont know what to do. i feel like im having heart problems now and im just so scared...my mom got on it and she said it worked for her but she also said that it does ware off obviously when you stop taking it . but the bledding thing no. as soon as i had the first depo i never had a period and this was in august 08. its nopw may and its now all these symtoms want to show up i even went to the hospital they took blood and found that everything was okay. So it has to be the depo. also i asked my friend and she said it was giving her dizziness too. she told me to get off of it immidiately. and i am i only have had 3 shots. and those are only the 3 firsts and 3 lasts. I have faith in god that hes going to give me a second chance.

please tell me more, on here or anywhere. not sure how to do that. i posted a reply a few people up but then i read your post, is the first one ive read that sounds like me. I am really f'd up over it. i have searched for the relationship between (post)depo provera and what happens to you, but all i can find is about when you can get pregnant. You, like me, were on it a very long time.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
hi. heres one for ya. i was on depo for 8 years. during that time my dr put me on prozac and wellbutrin for depression. (never took any before the depo) i went off the depo last january thinking my husband and I are ready for a baby. and then I went straight off the deep end. i actually get my periods regularly but my hormone changes and meds put me straight into an uncontrollable mania. I literally went out and had sex with alot of guys, spent loads of money (credit cards) and couldnt stop. went to my psychiatrist who just put me on a mood stabilizer and and anti-psychotic drugs. I have been with my husband for 9 years, never cheating, and really I think, being a great wife. And now we are apart. I am living half way across the country and he hates me.
What else do I blame?

I believe in the office they inform you that you need to drink milk and also take vitamins b/c your bones are affected. Offcourse your period stops it is normal when on depo. Never heard "horror" stories like this before. Geesh just research before you come on here and post garbage

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I am 47 and got *2* Depo shots for heavy, erratic bleeding with the last shot in
July of 2008.

After the first shot, I felt great...for two weeks.

Then, life as I knew it ended.

I had a period.
Then it stopped.

A week later, I started "spotting" this horrible brown stuff.
[sorry...don't have a nicer way of describing it]

This has been going on continually now for almost a year.

Spot spot spot...period.
[lather, rinse, repeat]

I have basically been bleeding non-stop, to one degree or another for a year.

[my sonograms showed no abnormalities, prior to getting the shots]

My useless gyno, who swore Depo had NO side effects whatsoever when he talked me
into getting something I'd never even
heard of prior to that visit, told me that this misery would stop in a few
weeks.

After months of suffering, he amended the time frame to a "few months".

He will not answer my calls any more.

I have tried everything from progesterone cream to DIM Plus capsules to Revival
soy shakes.

NOTHING is stopping the bleeding yet he says "everything is fine" regarding my
exams.

The "basic" hormone tests show everything as "normal".

Bleeding for a year is NOT normal.

I don't know what else to do.

I never thought I'd find myself referring to my heavy, painful erratic periods
as "the good old days" but that's what it's come to.

I cannot take "herbs" as I have a phobia about stuff like that.

My generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks have gone off the scale
because I am *always* in "PMS" mode, now.

What did the Depo do to me and how can I "fix" it?

I am far beyond desperate and rapidly approaching despondent and depressed.

I can't take this any more.

I hope somebody here can help me get to somewhere near "normal" again, please.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I am 41 years old and was put on Depo to make sure I did not have a stroke from being on the pill at my age. I have a history of endometriosis and fibroids. I was not told about any side effects and unfortunately did not do my research before getting two shots.

I went to my gynecologist today because of my problems with Depo. I had my first shot in September and my last shot in December. I have not had my period since September 2 and have gained 30 pounds. Despite majorally dieting and working out at least 5 days a week, I continue to gain. I also have a 3cm cyst on my only ovary. I have many of the other symptoms that people mentioned. When I cried to the doctor about my frustrations, she offered for me to see a psychiatrist.

I am interested in any method that has been found to speed up the process of flushing the hormones (toxins) from your system. I was told there was nothing I could do except wait or try Weight Watchers.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I was reading a bunch of the postings and I have to say that the shot has messed with me mentally and physically..
I am 17 about to be 18 years old and I am married to this amazing guy..
We only used protection for like 2 months of our relationship and I to this day have not gotten pregnant nor had a regular period since the depo.
I have been off the shot for like 2 and a half years and nothing has been normal since..
I thought I was pregnant last year in dec. of 2008 because I took a test and it came up a faint + and I had every sign there was.
I was happy inside but I knew to not hold my breth cause of everything thats has went on with my body.
Then like a week later I woke up and about 2 hours later I had a really bad cramp in my lower back and stomach and I just started bleeding really bad.
I couldnt hardly walk.
I have 5 sisters and I am the youngest by 4 years and it makes me so depressed when I think about me might not being able to have children..
On top of the depo which I done like 3 shot and then refused to take anymore because it was court orderd I started getting really bad UTI'S(Urinary Trac Infections)like every month everyother month..That also causes infertility..
I have not had a UTI in almost 4 months and I pray everyday that I dont have another..
I want to be able to have a child and to experience the big belly and takeing pics every month but I dont think I am able to..
Please dont EVER get on the shot or put you daughter on the shot..
It is not worth it.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Wow how funny...my situation was kind og the same. I was on depo for 7 years and was able to keep some wait on while on depo. I had always been very skinny. After 7 yeas Kaiser said I should get off depo and I did I want form 140 lb @ 5'8 to 115lb. In only 6 months. So after losing all that weight i decided to get back on the shot and sure of enough i gained 30lbs like that. Now I am 145 and am not sure if I should get off or not. To skinny to fat I cant win!!! :) I could not believe how fast I gained that wait and by the way I work out 4 days a week 3 hours of cardo a week and cannot lose a pound.

Just wanted to say that I had a terrible experience coming off depo after 4 years on it. Coming off it I gained 15kilos and my periods went awol for a year until I was given clomid to get them back! I was ttc my second baby for a total of two years after depo and she is now here and 2wks old! It was definately a hard two years and I was extremely moody...like bipolar! so I have found it interesting reading this site and seeing the info within. Also wanted to mention that there is a forum called 'pregnancy after depo' on the raising kids site and it is very support for women ttc after depo if anyone is interested. There is two parts to it and a couple of thousand pages within but it is worth the read (like a mini soap opera). We all support each other and go through the highs and lows together. You don't have to read it all though you can just jump on and ask q's and pick up on everyone as you go. just a thought for those of you ttc
take care

I also understand he is not in my shoes and with all that has happened
that he thinks things and the moods won't change. There not my moods,
that I can control. They are the unnatural moods of this injection.
I love him greatly and I will not allow this depo ruin it.
My mum had to live with it and even the past year or so, she has been on
the receiving end of the Depo's moods and so have my friends.

I'm a person that lives for today and enjoys life.
Is a happy fun person, that just wants to have a good time.
And this drug has stole that from me, but I will take myself back.

I never thought how much this has effected me.
I'm not one that believes in anti-depresents, so I would rather try
another method that would help.
But I'm really hoping and praying and completely motivated to kicking
this drug in the face and
return to my usual bubbly self.
I never thought I would say it but I can't wait to have my period back,
at least that warns me and my partner to watch out for flying cutlery
;-) There is so much I want to detail, but I think anyone that has been
on this Depo, knows exactly what this rubbish is all about.

I think everyone does need to remember, that all women react to this
injection differently. Some have experienced what I have went through.
Gained and lost weight. Had continuing bleeding.

Sometimes I feel like ripping this depo out of my body, but my focus is
to get back to my fun joyful self and get my relationship back on track.
I hope he will still be there.
I'm not letting this toxic take control anymore.

Some advice would be helpful on how I can recover from this all. And
some way of getting this drug off the market before it ruins good
natured people and relationships with family, friends and partner(s).

Here is some links to other forums I came across:

I cry about the smallest things and most times at nothing at all.
I'm always cold even when its actually hot. A sweat more than usual and
still cold.
I'm more paraniod and getting slightly even jealous at times and I have
been one to go by be grateful for what you have and be happy for those
that have good things in life.

This drug is the most digusting thing to be invented. I haven't gained
weight, but lost interest in food which has lead to me loosing straight
thinking. I can barely eat more than once a day.
I never thought all these things happened because of this drug, I just
thought I was having a mad long year moment.

And thankfully it wasn't until my partner pointed out its the drug
that's doing this to me. So I look around on forums and (sorry to say)
I'm glad there has been other females out there that has been through
all of this. I have even meet people in work, that is speaking what I
have been through.
This injection has made a clone of you and gave you an evil personality.
I'm so angry at myself and the doctors and clinic advisers who didn't
warn me properly of how this effects you. And that I didn't listen to my
mum and went against her wishes.

I was meant to go for a top up on 04.04.2009, but no way in this world
am I every returning to get it done again.

Everytime my partner and I met up, this injection would put me be in a
mood about something so small or anything for no reason, cry, snap, go
in huffs and being nasty. THAT IS NOT WHO I AM.
I understand he is angry for the way he has been treated, but it really
is because of this horrible Depo and he doesn't feel convinced that the
injection is all to blame.
I'm so scared that my first love, has had enough.
I'm trying to remind him that it has been the injections fault for all
this grief and chaos and it is not me at all.
And remember the good times, because that's what I am about. That is who
I am.
I also understand he is not in my shoes and with al ...

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
First of all, please excuse any miss-spelling or terrible grammer, so
bare with me :-)

Secondly: The Depo is pure toxic acid.

I'll explain the first bit of my story:

I tried this depo when I was 14 and I didn't think it was the cause of
extreme mood changes/swings and emotional screw ups.
Due to a lot a things that happened around that time: going through
puberty, my uncle passing away, court cases within the family, I just
put it down to all the stress and upset of the family.

But I told my mum about that I got the depo and she said the Depo is
what is effecting my behaviour and the lovely person I am.
I kind of ignored her and thought she was just being a worrying mum.
Then years later when I was 19 going on 20, thought I could handle it
because I'm older and my body has gotten out of puberty.

But here is the up to date story:

I dont know where to begin but this has been a living nightmare for the
past year & a half (started injection - Jan 2008 and ENDED it -
04.04.2009).
Also to mention, the 5 or 6 month into it, I bleed for 11 weeks. That is
a drainer. I asked my doctor to give me something to stop it. Which they
did and haven't had my period since then.
The way this depo has been effecting me is unreal. I have had no period
(which is the only plus side).
It feels like something is completly taken over your emotions and mind.
I'm moody and not your natural time of the month moody, but the cow from
hell moody. I snap and moan at my partner at the such tiniest things.

The only way I can discribe the way it has effect my behaviour, is it
feels like manic depression, your natural self doesn't know when you're
going to be up or down because of this drug and most of the time you
feel down and the world is working against you. Which would be referred
as PMs, just before you get your period. PMs has happened since this
injections has been in me and not gone away.
I cry about the smallest things and most times at nothing at ...

I cant believe myself, i dont enjoy having sex with my partner anymore..im VERY moody everyday, stressed, yelling, i dont want to be touched by him & the weight that i have gained is not making things any better & i blame it all on the depo!! I was on it for back in 02, 03, 04 & then went off it & feel pregnant with my son about 6 months later..i never had any problems with it that time, then after i had my son i had about 4 injections then stopped getting it & feel pregnant with my daughter & after i had her i started getting it again, its been almost 2 years since i have been on it now & i have been through so much & so has my partner..depression, 20kgs weight gain, mood swings, loss in feeling like sex, not wanting my partner 2 touch me or even come anywhere near me etc...this is not me!! I dont know what is wrong with me :( i feel so slack the way i have been treating my partner..i have nothing 2 blame this on but my hormones & they are the way they are bcoz of the depo!! Im due to get it tomorrow but i have decided not to get it & lets see how i am in the next couple of weeks...if im a happier person!! But i guess i will not be 100% happy til i have lost the weight i have gained from this stupid contraceptive needle!! I dont recommend it to anybody.
