i know that thing with the doctors work.. mine just kept on telling me that it was in my head and that i was perfectly fine.. all that shot did was cause me stress.. it just didn't hit me to bad at first but i was on it for at least 3 yrs straight which i then found out wasn't suppose to happen.. but it was to late .. 5 yrs later and i'm still suffering from all of the effects of it.. the side effects don't go away no matter what you try.. sleep is the biggest problem.. i'm lucky to get maybe 3 hrs in a row then my legs cramp up on me and wake me up.. so i hope things get better for you..

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hi everyone,

I got my first depo injection in january 2009. my period came at its normal scheduled time the first month and lasted for 4 months. was supposed to go back for my second shot in april 2009 but i was so afraid to do another one that i never did. my period finally stopped in may for about a month or so, then returned with a vengeance in at the end of july and has been torturing me ever since. and im not talking spotting either. im talkin about soaking up 2 overnight pads in 7 hours. i made an appt with my gp and hope that he can give me something to make me feel normal again because something is definitely wrong. I have the feelings of depression and anxiety that a lot of you all are having and thought it was job stress related. started seeing a therapist who gave me a prescription of zoloft. now i know what the real issue is after finding this site. my heart goes out to all the women who have not had a positive experience on depo. and to those out there who claim we should have done our research... guess what i did. the fact remains that everyones body is different and will react differently to drugs administered. my g.p did suggest that i try the nuva ring first tho... wish i woulda listened...

i have been on depo for 5 years i just recently got off back in may of 2009 i started on my birthday september 27th 2004, the only good thing out of taking depo is that i have no kids and i didn't get my period at all...other than that i gained weight my first year on it but by the end of that year i was back to my normal size 6 because i stay active but also i gained some very bad side affects i became a very angry person, i snap out for no reason and i stay !irritated! the smallest thing make me so mad and when i look back i be thinking damn it really wasn't that deep...i also be very depressed at time just out of no where i can be having the BEST day then all of a sudden i be real sad or i can be laughng and talking then i be MAD for no reason..i swear i feel crazy. also my sex drive became off the hook i want it everyday all day and not that i think its a problem nor do my partner lol but i usually hear people say they don't be wanting to have sex and i'm the total oppisite...now i never been good at taking pills and things so when it come to taking calcium i am no good my bones are basically destroyed i was on the swimming team and i had to quit because my bone got so bad that the pressure from the water would cause me to be so sore i would cry i just was at my doctors appointment today (8/16/09) because now when i walk i fall over sometimes because i loose my ballence from the pain i just started taking once a day women and im hoping that it work.... so to rap this all up i wouldn't recomend depo to anyone because its a whole lot that comes with it

Its been now about 2 1/2 months since I have had my first depo shot. What I thought was a normal period turned out to be a prolonged period. My doctor gave me Premarin 0.3 estrogen pills but it has not stopped the bleeding. I am not bleeding heavy but I am still bleeding. I am sick and fed up of this now and I would like it to stop. I just wish so hard that I did my home work on this pill. I will NEVER ever take this shot again nor will i recommend it to anyone!!!

I'm 17 and just got my first shot on july 24th 2009. I was scarred to get it because when my mother was on it it caused her to pee out blood clots. Today is August 10th 2009 and for the past 2 weeks I have been having akward dreams that I won't be able to have children and I will adopt a set of twins. After reading these horror stories today it is very highly possible that if I continue with it and it has a bad reaction that I could be unable to have children in the future... I hope I don't sound paranoid, but I have an usualy high rate of knowing something befor it happens I've been told I'm pychic but idk what god would think of that.

If you believe that it is the shot that is the cause of change in behavior, instead of taking the depo shot if she has already had a child there is a plastic device called Mirena it is placed in the servicks and prevents pregnacy for 5yrs it can always be removed if you both decide to add on to the family... If she does not like the idea of Mirena you could look and find the most upsetting Depo horror stories either print out pages or show her the website, It might make her open her eyes to alternate types of birth control

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hi, I am a 33 year old who prior to using depo provera was a healthy woman. I know exactly what you are talking about. In 1998 after my daughter was born my step-mother and sister-in-law convinced me to go to the doctor and get depo. My sister-in-law was using it and she said it was good. The doctor reassured me that if I want more kids I become fertile as soon as I stop using it (after 3 months). They told me I may gain weight (I went from size 18 to now being 28)but failed to tell me about the major side effects. I last had my injection may 2001. I have not had a period since then and we have been trying for another child since 2002. Every time I would ask the doctor if I can have more kids they always reassured me that winthin 3 months of the injection I would be fertile again. I now have polycystic ovaries (never had that prior to injections), type 2 diabetes (getting worse - body can't use insulin properly) my periods still haven't started up and I get hair growing under my chin down my neck and my arms etc have thickened up like a man. I have many other problems starting up because of the polycystic ovaries and diabetes starting. Every doctor I talk to denies depo had nothing to do with it, yet prior to using it I had very regular periods and no health issues. Why won't these people take responsibility for what has happened? I am upset this is affecting my marriage and mentally I am going nuts. I can't lose weight because of it and I am now infertile because of it. I tell people DON"T USE DEPO PROVERA as it ruins your life. How can we get our message across to the company making it so they can research it properly? It is ruining too many lives and no-one is willing to take responsibility for it. How can we get help for this problem? How can we get the message across to the manufactuer that these things are happening?
I know I am not the only one, as a nurse I have met several other nurses who have told me more or less the same thing has happened to them too.

Hi I agree with you 100% my daughter has had all your symptoms this is a poisonous substance and should be banned and the victims should be compensated because of the health complications they have had to endure now and in the future who knows its a scandle.

I'm having the same issues. This is my second shot, and I'm due for a third one no later than July 21. Lately I've been having the same symptoms: tender breasts, nausea, light-headedness/headache s. I took a HPT but it was negative. =/

as a young girl l strongly advise you too never use depo again are you aware that they use depo for chemical castration for sex offenders. my husband did some checking on the effects and what its used for after l suffered really bad side effects from depo. even after stopping depo it can take up to two years for it to get out of your system. be aware of the damage it does.

Just wondering how many of you were correctly counselled etc before you took Depo.MANY MANY women of ALL ages have UNEXPLAINED infertility!! some have been on depo MANY haven't.It is important that anyone having problems conceiving gets BOTH partners tested!!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
... continuing...

... have been warned. My life, as well as so many others, has been damaged somewhat largely and this should not have been the choice of the doctors. It is not their risk to take, it is ours and I would have chosen not to take that risk because I cannot change these past 2 years. I have lost alot because of this stupid drug and its extremely unfair. I'm just thankful that I came across this forum and found out what has been happening, because now I can return to my normal self :). I'm lucky I found out before I became infertile or something terrible like that.

I would definately advise AGAINST depo provera. I can't wait to return to my happy, bubbly self and move past this. I'm extremely lucky.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Im 15 years old. I went on depo when I was 13, as a contraceptive. This month makes it 2 years exactly since I had my first injection and I have had an injection every 3 months for those 2 years (eight injections in total). When my mum and I requested some sort of birth control after I lost my virginity to my long time boyfriend (who i'm still with), my very trusted doctor recommended this drug. She warned us about future Osteoporosis. We were not warned about future infertility, UTI's, cancers, fybroids... we were also not warned about the other side effects:
-weight gain
-depression (described by patients on depo as manic and often resulting in rages and episodes associated with bi-polar and other mental disorders)
-anxiety and nervousness
-hair loss
-dizziness, fatigue
-irregular and/or absent menstruation
-loss of libido (ironic)
-bloating
-stomach pains, cramps, and headaches
-hairloss

I, as a fifteen year old who was perfectly healthy before, have experienced every single one of these side effects. This drug has affected my life for the past 2 years and if I had not of come across this forum I would have continued with the injections. However, after reading other womens stories and realising what has been wrong with me, I am so relieved. I have been so messed up and now I know why, after wondering so many times why I have been this way. Am I crazy? Am I mental? As a teenage girl these side effects have been hell, especially the weight gain, albeit small.
My dad also passed away only 3 months before I started on depo provera, and this drug has majorly interfered with my grieving process... and this is sad and regretful.
Various doctors at the practice have given me my injection throughout these past 2 years. It angers me that not one single doctor ever warned me of the side effects, or asked me if I was experiencing any side effects. I was 13! Irresponsible doctors. Some might say that depo works well for some, but clearly not all and we should.. ...

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I was on DP for over 5 years. I loved it, I was it's biggest advocate! I never had any side effects.. until now.

I went off it and on to the normal pill after hearing stories about how bad it was for my body in numerous ways. I went off the pill for another 2 years and have been off for 18 months.

Results of me being on DP and the pill for many years are now at 37 causing me a lot of problems. I have Estrogen Dominance which causes a migraine, acne and breast tenderness every month. I developed a polup on my my uterus which had to be removed before it became cancerous and have now been diagnosed with high grade squeamous lesion and have to have some of my cervix cut out to ensure it does not turn cancerous.

With help from a doctor and a naturopath I'm now working hard at getting the extra estrogen out of my system which may take 6-12 months and at cost to my health and my pocket.
I would strongly recommend women do not go on DP or the pill if possible. Although it is extremely convenient it is very damaging down the track.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hi there Salamander Rising,

A few months ago I helped a woman who had a similar problem -- she never stopped bleeding. She had been not only on depo provera, but on other hormonal treatments as well (bad ones). I told her that I thought her non-stop bleeding was the result of an estradiol deficiency (that's the most powerful estrogen). She asked her doctor for some supplemental estradiol and the bleeding stopped almost immediately after she started on it.

In my opinion, this would be worth a try. Estradiol is needed by the uterus for repair after the lining is shed. But try to get a script for transdermal estradiol (a cream or gel, that is) rather than for oral estradiol. Transdermal, bio-identical estradiol is very safe; oral is not.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Depo Provera - I think the side effects should be more honestly revealed to women by their doctors and GP's, I was told nothing, only that it should stop my periods - I was having the injection for an aneamic problem - the irony of it is I have been bleeding for the whole 3 months and can't wait for this damn thing to wear off.

I have also become an emotional basket case, crying for no reason and angry the next with headaches so violent they woke me up often lasting for days - (going back to the doctor I was told it was a "virus", the thing they say to fob you off). Other symtoms included, flushing, weird red patches on neck/chest area, weight gain, bloating and hair falling out. whoopee.

I would advice people to try less hormonally permenant methods of contraception, like Mirena or IUD's which can be removed if problems occure.

I am on Depo-provera too and have had constant beelding for the three months on it, (never again willl i take this injection). - the panic attacks could be Anaemia due to blood loss, ask your GP for a blood test.
The symptoms are heart palpitations and anxiety - easily cured with iron tabelts.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I just had to jump in here, I've beenon Depo Provera for 10 years now and Love it. I went off it because got re-married and husband had a Vasectomy so didn't think I needed to stay on it other then I totally enjoyed not having my periods. My cycle resumed to normal in about 9 months and was ok for about 2 years until I started to bleed and have a lot of clotting and real bad cramps. Got an ultrasound and the doc said I had uterine fibroids, largest 5cm. Well the gyn said have a hyst *** omy. I said no way, I'll try other natural methonds-went on natural progesterone which helped some but not enough. I told my gyn I wanted to go back onto depo and he said no that there were too many side effect (even though when I was on it before I felt fine) Well I went to Planned parenthood to discuss it and they were fine with me going back on it (I'm in my 40's). Guess what after 1 year on it my fibroids shrank, I no longer have periods other then some occasional mild spotting and I have no more cramping. Now I'm 45 and am still on depo and don't want to go off it for fear the fibroids will return.

Anyway-not all women have bad effects from DP, some actually do benefit from it.
