I have been on Depo for over 7 years now without a break and had no issues with it at all (I have Crohns so oral pills were useless when I was unwell).
No bleeding, no weight gain, no mood swings, no muscle ache - nada.
I was worried at first but I gave it a good chance and would recommend it to anyone. But like any drug it will not be suitable for all. Just give it a good chance though and dont stop after 1 or 2 injections, you have to let your body settle down into the drug.
Its the best invention ever..! |

| hi....with reply to that last post. Condoms are a very easy to use contraception! Please note that I had no problems with depo and I know a lot of others who are on it with no problems. Everything that you put into your body to stop its natural process is sure to have side effects though. They may just choose to come out in some and not in others. There are people that have just as many issues with the pil. Trial and error I think. |

| Thank you so much for warning me....I am 22 and I never used any contraception and because of that fell pregnant and gave birth 2 months ago to a baby boy which i dont regret at all...I was thinking to start taking the pill but i am sort of a person who forgets a lot so didn't think it would be safe for me. I was reading some info about the depo and thought it is the most effective and easy so decided to visit the GP tomorrow and start getting the shot untill i saw you girls msg's. Can anybody please advise me for a very effective and easy to use contraception?? |

| I have been on the depo shot for 10 years and I've been having joint trouble for the last few months. My knees have bothered me and now I have TMJ which is horrible because I can't open my mouth all the way to eat so I have to cut my up really small to get it into my mouth, if my jaw isn't too sore to chew it up. I knew that depo could cause loss of bone density but I've just learned that it can cause joint problems too. |

| Hi....I was on the depo for 4 years and loved it. I didn't have any bleeding at all whatsoever the whole 4 years. Also, I did't have the hair loss, headaches etc etc. I went off it 18 months ago to try for a baby and I just had my bub on Jan 28th 06. I was thinking of going back on the depo in the next few weeks but everyones stories are freaking me out....even though I was fine on it for years. I suppose nothing on earth that we put into our bodies to stop the natural flow of cycles/menstruation etc can be any good for us at all. 100 years from now we will be concidered the generation of pill poppers and over medicators. I think I may just use condoms! |

I am currently taking Brevinor (the Pill) after changing from Microgynon 50 (then before that it was something else), but I have found probably over the last year that my libido has dramatically decreased and I'm worried it's because of the pill. I'm scared it's gone for good. My gynaecologist seems to think that Implanon would be good for me to try out. Another GP suggested the depo shot, but the thing that concerned me was that if your body doesn't agree with it and you get some bad side effects, you have to wait a couple of months for it to wear off. Whereas Implanon can be removed straight away. I'm a bit hesitant about Implanon, mainly because the people I know that have had it had bleed for a couple of months and had to have it removed! But they say it is so effective that it is the only form of female sterilization that is 100% reversable.
I'd appreciate anyone who has or have tried Implanon and has any comments (good or bad) to drop me a line! |

The IUD they might have been talking about is called a Mirena. I guess with anything you need to try and see what's right for you, and be guided by what your GP or gynaecologist advises. Here's a website about the Mirena http://www.asia.mirena.com/html/how_does_it_work/i ndex.html
Otherwise there is a similar device called a Multiload http://www.organon.com.au/products/contraception/M ultiload.asp?ComponentID=93443&SourcePageID=91486 |

Question:
Once you stopped the depo did your side effects go away? Such as the being tired, did you get your sexual interest(libido)back? |

I have been on the depo for I'd say a little over year!
I have side effects and that is what made me do my search on the shot. Here are the side effects that I have experienced(by the way I am 23yrs old)
1. Abdominal pain(cramps)
2. Lose in sexual interest
3. Mood swings and anger
4. Tired.
5. Lack of lubrication- Have gone from being "wet" down below to becoming very "dry"
6. 10-15 pounds in weight gain.
After reading all of your stories I am now considering getting off the shot and going back on the pill. The pill was my first form of birth control and I had NO problems on it(other than sometimes forgetting to take it).
I feel that by my being on the shot has put serious stress on my relationship. I am never in the mood for sex so my boyfriend assumes that it has something to do with him or that I'm getting it elsewhere(which it's neither), and I'm also on defense or angry and never used to be this way. |

Hello, i got your email from a depo provera board. I was wondering how long it took you to stop your heavy periods, i too have just come off the shot and 2 months later, i have had my period for 3 weeks now going on 4. Did you go to a doctor, any advice will be greatly appreciated. I don't know what is going on with my body, but your situation sounds exactly like mine.
please feel free to email me back
thanks for taking the time to read

| WOW ....i cant believe they still even make depo provera..i had an injection when i was 18 and I'm now 28 and it actually made the muscle in my leg (where i got the needle)sink leaving a big sunken ditch...no kidding..i was doing a bit of modelling at the time...so i took it to a solicitor to see where i stood with some compensation for the big ugly hole and they said i stood a very good chance of being compensated for becoming disfigured...i also lost all normal cycle functions for 2 years after that...and like others became emotionally imbalanced...i still feel like i was a guinea pig and stupid for even having ...its my fault for not looking into the possible risks..but then again....were they even specified from the start???? |

| I took the Depo for 3 years and I would never recommend it to anyone! I am 26 and I resently stopped the shot because I was an emotional wreck. I gained 30 pounds the first three months of the shot. I was extremely depressed and anti-social.I was having severe head aches that would last days. Now I feel better that I am off it, but I still have head aches, leg pains,my bones always ache and now I have started having sharp chest pains. I am so scared, but my doctors don't seem to care. I don't know what else to do? |

| I agree that everyone woman is completely different from the next... only thing being is all of these women seem to have significant similarities when speaking of side affects. Personally i have been going through extensive testing to try and find out why i am experiencing extreme headaches, dizziness, and severe blackouts. I have been on depo for approx. 1 1/2 years and have been having these symptoms ever since. At first i blamed these symptoms on my body getting back to normal after having my baby, but a year and half.. i now after reading this message board believe it is linked to the depo. I have asked physicians many times if it could be related to the depo... they all have said NO!!!!! now that i read this, i also realize i have other common side affects.. hair loss, aching neck, ect. Im not sure as to what i am going to do as far as stoppping the shot, but im definitly going to do further research..... thank you for posting your messages as you may be saving alot of women.. |

My personal story of Depo Provera is that I had two injections in May and August of 1995 and was never at any time going to get any more as i was getting married in Nov of 95 and we wanted to start a family as soon as possible.
I was told it would be fine and that I would be back to normal withing a few months of the due date of the next dose. I had no problems while on it, however, I did not get a period from may of '95 till about Sept of '97. I have test after test done and to this day we can only assume my inability to get pregnant has been due to this depo prevera. It is 10+ years later and I have never ever ever been pregnant. Before taking depo - I was regular as clockwork - I could set my clock to it, I was that regular (29 days). After I finally got my period back some 2 years later, i have had cycles ranging in length of 3 weeks to 6 months - and usually around the 3 to 4 month mark. I no longer ovulate with any sense of nomality - if at all. I would strongly recommend that this drug be taken off the market entirely - it should not be allowed to continue to be available to unsuspecting women.
(I had been on the pill, but was unable to take it as i had severe nausea 12 hours after taking it - regardless of time taken)
That's just my opinion however. |

| I was told by my GP that depo could not be given any sooner than a week before it was due as the homones would be too great if it was given too early |
