| I was on the Deppo for 3years, during which I had no periods. Wow, that was great ! But the weight-gain was NOT fun. I went from a size12 to nearly a size20. Naturally, there was a great reduction in my libido and general zest for Life. When I realised that I was approaching size20 I decided to stop. My last shot was 2yrs ago. It took 5-6 mths me to have a period again. These periods were very very heavy and all manner of colours, including maroon, dark brown and nearly-black. All with tinges of yellow. It was horrifying. I had irregular periods, going up to 2mths without one, and even had a period that lasted 4wks. This went on for about 6 mths, and my periods finally regulated themselves. I am now a size14, and hoping to my normal size12 again soon. I am as sexy as ever, wanting my man in my bed all the time - hehe. I am feeling GREAT. As the deppo stays in the system for up to 24mths, I am hoping I will fall pregnant soon : ) |

| I took depo for about 4 years before stopping in 2006. I am also having sharp chest pains and the doctors have told me that it is stress. They think it is stress because they can't find any evidence that it is heart related even after two instances of wearing the 24 hour holter monitor. I am taking an anti-depressant. It worked for the first few months, but the chest pains have started coming back. I have also been diagnosed with acid reflux. I have also had neck pain which again leads the doctors to believe it is stress. I am starting to really wonder now that I have read similar entries about these side affects and depo. |

| I had doubts about getting the shot to begin with, but I thought "what could it hurt to try it?" so I got one shot. Ever since it has been the biggest regret of my life! I've had heart palpatations and extreme irritability with my daughter and others around me. Also, I didn't have my period for 40 days then I got a normal period and after that I had light bleeding everyday until recently when I started bleeding extremely heavy with a lot of passing of clots. Ovarian and cervical cancer run in my family so this has me extremely worried. I just burried my grandfather on Tuesday (he passed from cancer) and Wednesday is when the heavy bleeding and clot passing began. I don't know if it had to do with stress or if it's purely the shot. In any case, my sister-in-law and I both have horror stories from the shot and totally don't recommend it to anyone!! |

| Wow your story is almost exactly like mine. I was on it for 4 years, got off regulated quickly for about 9 months and then I stopped getting a period, bled for a month and now I'm having issues w/ getting pregnant. I can get a period but I can't get it on my own. Like you I was regular my entire life untill I got on the depo. "They" say that depo doesn't affect periods after you are off for a year or so, but I don't belive them. I've heard too many stories like ours. Thanks for sharing. |

My Depo experience was awful
I used it for a couple of years before switching to implanon (which is just as big of a nightmare!!)
with every depo injection i got, i would have a week of constant gastritis and vomiting, not to mention the cramps in my stomach which you could only comapre to child birth contractions.
In 18 months i went from a size 14 to a 22, and woke up every morning to a new stretch mark on my stomach.
Once i stopped using depo, i fell pregnant and lost my baby and the doctor says it was because of traces of depo still in my system.
I would not recommend it to anybody.... or the implant for that matter! |

hi there, u said that u stopped the depo in nov 05 and only got your period last june? wow, that's a helluva long time.. i stopped the depo last month in mid-aug and i noticed that this month's period has come in black spots of blood. i dono if i can call this period or just spotting.. i'm very worried actually as we are planning to have a baby only next year.. what i'm worried about is whether i should take the pill (i'm gonna try Mercilon) now or when my regular period comes back, which could be a distance from now. and i miss having my periods cos to me, periods are the body's natural way of cleansing its internals.
sigh, why did i ever go on depo in the 1st place??? |

| I have used Depro in between my two pregnancies - I thought it was great as I never got a period whilst I was on it - all I ever got was a slight bleed about a week before the next injection was due - which was a good reminder to get the next injection. I never had any side effects at all. Both times I came off of it it took about a year for my cycle to get back to normal - but that is considered good as it says in the phamplet you get with the shot that it can take up to 2 years for your cycle to return to normal. The last time I came off it I had a very heavy bleed which lasted 3 weeks and I felt that it was my body telling me it was time for a break after 6 years of pregnancy/depro/pregnancy /depro. I went to the Dr and she said that was normal and if I wanted to get my cycle back in order that she could help with that - but I wasnt fussed - I wasnt planning on getting pregnant at the time so didnt really need the cycle anyway. I will also say both times I have come off the depro and let it wear off and get back into a normal cycle I have gotten pregnant first time I actually tried to. When you use any contraception is it advisable to stop after a long period anyway - Drs suggest you should not take the pill for anymore than 10 years in a row. Before I had the kids I took the pill for 10 years. But after having kids it was easier to have the injection and not have to worry about it for the next 3 months. But you have to remember different drugs effect different people in all kinds of different ways. |

| I actually stumbled on this site by accident and im glad i did. not in a million years did i pinpoint my problems of HAIR LOSS, STIFF NECK AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK UPON WAKING, MOOD SWINGS, AND MOST RECENTLY LEG CRAMPS with the depo injection. I was advised about weight gain of a few pounds which then turned into a stone in eighteen months. I should of seen the warning signs on my last injection when the nurse injected me to far up my hip which resulted in all i can describe as a dead leg for 4 hours. My friend advised me against it but i also took the same approach as some others by saying everyone is different. It now appears to me after reading this site that those who are lucky enough to be problem free are the minority. My next injection is due in two weeks needless to say i wont be bothering. |

Hi,
I'm so relieved reading all of your posts, I had my shot on the 11th June and was fine for the first month however have had spotting since then. Libido gone and muscular aches are at an all time high. Is there anything that can be done to counteract the constant spotting. |

| I know how you feel, I had been on the depo for about 6 years through an abusive relationship, which I got out of and then fell in love with a wonderful man whom we have decided to have a child together. I also came off the depo last novemeber, but to date no sign of the return of my period, this is very worring to me and I have been to the doctors whom advise that the depo can take up to two years to fully wear off and for normal periods to return and for the possiblity of conception. I to have thought I was pregnant as I was vomiting in the morning and have very tender breasts and all the other signs of early pregnancy, but when I take a home test and it comes back neg I feel really low and wish I had never taken the depo in the first place, or at least stopped it when I ended my abusive marriage. |

| Hello! I live in England and have been on the shot for coming up to 6 months, am due for another one in 2 weeks. I thought I was turning into a weirdo, I swing from being unbelievably happy to screamin and shouting and hitting out in a matter of minutes, strange and not much fun as im laid back normally. I have been spotting practically the whole time since back in March when I started it, I've put on weight, I'm not sure how much, but I was always very very slim naturally, could eat what I wanted and never put a lb on, since I been on the shot I've gone from a UK sixe 6/8 to 10/12, which although it's still not fat, is pretty upsetting. Not to mention pricey having to buy new clothes all the time. I'd not really thought about the hair loss, but now I can see as i'm typing there is hair all aorund me. I HATE this injection, it's made the relationship between me and my boyfriend strained as he can never tell when I'm going to comp, letely lose it over something stupid, neither can I for that matter. One day he will do something and I will be fine, not a problem get on with it, the next he does it again and I will scream and shout, cry, it's ridiculous and it makes me feel like i'm losing my mind, I used to be really laid back. Also producing milk from one breast, not a very pleasant feeling. Finally, there is the depression. Thing is, it does seem to wear off, fair enough, this is the end of my second shot and I'm much calmer, as I was at the end of the first one, but in the middle and straight after a shot it's a nightmare. I guess it could settle after a few more shots, but I can't kep feeling like this in the hopes it might. Definitely not gettin my next shot. |

Hi
I have had everything you have mentioned in our email. I had been on the injection for 6 years and decided to go off it to try and start a family. My last injection was in November 2005 and I didn't realise of all of the side effects and how long it could possibly take me to fall pregnant. I finally got my period on 25th June and I was so excited that my body may have been getting back to normal. I was happy and everything was starting to pick up. I am now late, only by a week and I decided to take a test today and only to find it to be negative as well. My breast are sore and i am putting on excessive weight. I honestly thought i may have been pregnant. I am feeling sick, but not to the point of being sick. I will never ever go back to be on this horrible poision that the doctors done want to warn you about. I spoke to my doctor about this and he just smiled, I was disgusted!!! I will not be going back to this doctor again. |

hi, i am now 27, i was on depo for about 1 1/2 years when i was about 20. i experienced a period that lasted 2 years! starting from the first shot. i talked to my GP about it , he advised me to continue with the injections and it would settle down. it didn't until i let the depo run out.
i have also had
hair loss, aching bones, verrrry tender breasts and was moody near to the end of the three months every time. i am not sure if these probs are related to the depo but this what i experienced.
i now have problems with excessive hair growth, again not sure if this is related, but just a warning to get all the facts before trying this drug.
i am childless by choice, have not tryed to concieve. to my dissapointment, condoms are the only side effect free option for me.
what ever happened to the MALE PILL??? |

I should also add if you are all so worried about the side effects of depo, then i suggest you dont look at the side effects of anything else you are taking..... Most common side effect of anti depressants are heart palpatations, dizziness and depression. These are also side effects of so many other groups of medications. I have had to research the side effects of many drugs due to my husbands health issues. He no longer takes any anti depressants with the dr's blessings due to the side effects.
The only way to avoid side effects is to not take any medications or treatments for conditions, and we all know this isnt safe and realistic. |

My 1st ever shot was on 14 may 2006 and the effect will end this 14 aug 2006. i will NEVER go on it again as the side effects i'm experiencing are tearing me apart.
Side effects are:
- Great loss of libido (i used to be the opposite!)
- Loss of lubricating ability during sex (during the few times that i feel like i want to have sex)
- Muscles cramping after long periods of sitting (difficulty to walk immediately)
- Loss of strength - can't do much heavy work anymore like lifting boxes/bags or pulling or pushing heavy stuff eg:doors/chairs etc
- Crippling migraine attacks (i already suffer from migraine before the shot, but never crippling ones)
- Continuous spotting (1st month i missed my period but 2nd month i've been spotting for more than 2wks already)
- Shortness of breath (like i'm pregnant or smthg)
- Definitely weigth gain by at least 4kg
- Moody for no reason (my poor husband suffers the brunt. he doesnt even know what hit him)
I started my birth control with the pill 2 mths prior to the jab but thot it was very inconvenient to remember to take it everynite. So the shot was very appealing to me at the time and i made the mistake of NOT researching on depo's pros and cons until A DAY after the shot has been given. How silly of me.
I'm calling out to everyone to avoid depo if you can. Although u may think that u are not suffering from the side effects right now, u will sooner or later in life (unless u don't plan to live that long). At first i did not believe the horror stories i read a day after i got the shot (obviously in denial) but now that i've experienced it myself, i am preaching to my girlfrens abt the bad side effects. altho the chemicals will stay in my body for quite some time after i quit depo, i will hv peace of mind that i'm not on it anymore and taking the pill will be a lot easier. I swear - this is the 1st and the last time i'll be on depo!
Just pop the pill, girls. It's much safer. |

| I had only one shot of depo provera early this year when i asked my gp what the side effects would be he only told me that i may miss my periods for a month or two. I havent had a period since going off depo and that was three months ago, my sister inlaw adviced me to see a naturopath and today i have started on a detox program. I hope it works. |

| After reading just a few of these stories I'm glad I only had the one shot of Depo after my first pregnancy. I didn't have a period for more than twelve months after that one shot, but don't seem to have had any long term effects. I've gone on to have two more pregnancys and have just found out I'm pregnant again. Best of luck to all those having problems. |

| I just took my last shot Dec. 16, 2005. Oh my goodness, things have gotten so much worse. I was on antidepressants for aoubt 2 out of the 5 1/2 years I was on the shot. I decided to go off my 'happy pills' in March of '06. Now, I have made it impossible for anyone to be around me. At work, home, people I've known all my life. I haven't had a period as of yet, but cramping comes and goes. I never gained weight from using Depo, however, I did get the depression, extreme moodiness, sometimes when it came time for my shot, I felt like I was going through withdrawals until I actually got it. Hot flashes, couldn't sleep. And talk about not sleeping while on the shot. I can't sleep now and I've been off of it for 6 months. Help!!!!!!! |

I have been on the Depo Provera shot for almost 5 years. My last shot was scheduled for March 31, but in the meantime, mainly, in the last month before I was due for the shot, I found out about bone loss and risks of using the shot. I decided not to take it.
I still have not begun to cycle, and I am being very mean! I have lost alot of hair, and my doctor always told me it was stress. When I called her to tell her I didn't want the shot anymore because of the risk of bone loss, she had never heard anything about it. How can our doctors be so uninformed?? This is truly scary.
When I got off the depo provera, I thought, well, any medicine you are on for 5 years has to have time to get out of your system, especially all the horomones. I accepted the moodswings as me becoming a drug free me again. But I had no idea I would feel like this. I have terrible muscle pain, stiffness, loss of strength, leg and back cramps that wake me out of a dead sleep, weight gain, the inability to lose weight, loss of hair, moodiness, anger, and depression. You know what is ironic? They gave me depo provera because of the anti depressants I was on. They would nullify oral contraceptives, and they didn't want me to be off of the anti depressants, so they pumped me full of this poison that can cause depression!!
This is absurd. I am a 21 year old woman. I am getting married next month and my future hubby and I decided last week we were going to try to start having a baby. After reading all of this, I am scared to death. I have always wanted to be a mom, and a young mom. To think I may never be able to have children because of this atrocious drug upsets me so much. I am so lost right now...I pray I will be able to have children, and lead a healthy life...the problems I had on the Depo were crazy...but who has any proof that the depo caused them? More than are listed here, abcessed tailbone, gallbladder stones requiring surgery, colitis, severe constipation, how long till I can be nor ... |

| Hi I am 20 years old and I started taking the shot when I was 16, I stayed on it without any side effects ( except weight loss) until my 18th birthday, the doctors told me that I may not be able to concieve for awhile but I wanted to try....needless to say I had a period for 2 months... as soon as the period stopped I found out that I was pregnant, I gave birth in March 2005 and stayed off birth control til July 2005, got back on the depo and have been on ever since, since I have started back up, I have lost my libido, painful sex, no period, I haven't had a period relly since I started back up but today I started spotting, my hair is falling out, I have so much pain, I broke my tailbone last summer and it still isn't healed all the way and I was just wanting to share my story with you all... this is my official last shot which I took in April 2006, I will be due for another one in July but I am not taking it.. if I have another child that is fine with me but I just can't deal with the pain of Depo anymore! |
