Hi, I have been on this injection for over 8 yrs and love it. No periods, no other side effects. Would reccomend it to anyone. Im 43yrs with 4 children so if I do come of it for any reason getting periods back to get pregant wont be a issue for me. Sorry to hear about all the problems others are having. Just started to have bleeding and period pain at the 2 month mark. Am going for tests. Being bleeding free for so long then starting seems to be a concern. Not even a spot at the 12 week mark.

I have been getting this injecetion since I was 18, over 13 years now and just the last 2 years all these side effects have hit me hard, very hard. I have severe cripling headaches, acne (never had spots as a teenager) depression, anxiety, mood swing, very teary, chronic synus probs MRI scan has found nothing wrong with me that could cause this. Its a very unlikely not to be the injection as I cant explain any of it myself, and pills not helping any of the symptoms of any of the conditions

I actually cant beleive what I am reading tonight. I have had terrible angry acne now for 18 months (although I did have it before also) and decided to do a web search for depo to see if it may be linked (as it just dawned on me I didnt have it while trying to get pregnant 4 years ago, but I thought it was the treatment that helped). I Also suffer from severe headaches, depression, anxiety, no sex drive no lubrication, short temper, cry at nothing and many other signs that I am now reading about from other women having been on depo. I am going to the doc tommorrow and think I may go mad. I cant beleive I thought I was the one going mad, all this pain and nothing to say what it was after MRI scans and everything else. I started to feel they think I am making all this up. not just the doc but everyone I know. I really have the horrors now. I will be 32 in april and had my first depo injection at 18, never came off it until 22 got pregnant and was back on it by 23. I then came back off when I was 27 for a year until I got pregnant, (while acne cleared I got real thin again and felt great). I was back on depo at 29 and then within months had terrible acne again which I am still trying to clear. Iam being treated for depression and anxiety, also have chronic synus probs and very painful stomache aches, also see a nuerologist for the headaches and after ct scan and MRI nothing was found. (I thought I was mad). I will be reading this more often as I know feel "normal" and that there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

hi i last had my depo shot in july 2005, and we are still trying to get pregnant. I finally have my period back with ovulation. See another doctor asap just because you have a period does not mean you are ovulating. I also have children 4 of them so depo is to blame for my inability to get pregnant it is called secondary infertility. Please all i can say is dont waste anymore time find a doctor that will hear your concerns and do tests to check everything is ok. good luck

I've been off the shot for nearly 4 years. I initially got it after my son was born, me and my husband not wanting to have another child so soon after. I was only on it for 1 1/2 yrs. I had all the side effects most people have had, but my mood swings were the worst. I would be happy then all of a sudden cry for no aparent reason or worse I would be angry. It took me 6 months just to get my period back. Ever since I've been very irregular, missed periods for months at a time for no reason. I got off the shot because of the side effects and because we were ready for another child. We have been trying to conceive for over 3 years now and I have only got pregnant once only to miscarry before the first trimester was up. I've always wanted a pretty big family and I'm starting to get discouraged, especially when my doctor doesn't think there is a need for any tests, since we already had a child. I'm in the process of trying to find a new doctor, hopefully somebody who will take this serious. Being I'm only 26, I shouldn't be having this much trouble especially since I've had a child. I really think the depo shot is to blame. I tell everyone I know not to use it or to get off it. It's not worth losing any chance of having children in my opinion. If I wanted that I would have had my tubes tied.

I have had one depo shot and I feel the same as you do. I'm afraid that I am driving my boyfriend crazy, he's been so great but I'm afraid that I'm going to push him too far. My moodswings are ridiculous and I'm unable to control my emotions, mostly my anger. Once I start I'm unable to stop, and I'm never sure if what I"m feeling is rational or because of the pill. I'm never sure when I'm overreacting. It's making me feel crazy.

Hi everyone. I have been on Depo Provera for ten years. During this time I began to have a drinking problem. I had a nine month break from Depo. I stopped drinking and finally got the strength to end (once and for all) a violent, destructive six year relationship but still did not associate the drug with my depression and mood swings. I had a Depo injection about two weeks ago and have been feeling anxious and depressed ever since. I cry and cry. It wasn't until today that I suddenly put two and two together ( What a slow learner !!!) and while looking for information on Depo, found this site.
I cannot believe what this drug has done to my life.I cannot believe that it has taken this long for me to realise how severly depressed I have been.It is so good to know that I'm not going crazy. I feel terribly sorry for everyone on this drug. I don't have any other symptoms - I suppose that's why I didn't associate the drug with the mood swings and depression. It's just not worth taking! At least I now know what the problem has been and can moniter myself carefully while waiting for the Depo to get out of my system. Thank you all! |

Be careful. I had an injection 17yrs ago and I'm enjoying being a Mum to a 16yr old.Throughout the injection 'safe' time, I spotted and even bled profusely at times. Try it once,if it is no good for you, there are many clinics that can help,if you can't afford much, talk to the people in charge, they will be able to help in the 'paying off' of any bills. You definitely need professional help. You'll get there in the long run and hopefully be able to help others in years to come. Goodluck in your future health.

Hi all, I'm 28 and I've been on Depo for about 18 months now. I've been put on it as I have Endometriosis cysts in my ovaries and I am unable to have Estrogen as I am suceptible to Deep Vein Thrombosis (I had to be taken off the pill after 5 years on it. The pill worked for me though). The Depo shots were really good until just recently where I am so depressed (I cry at nothing), I have started to get acne (never got acne before), bad cramps in legs, bad abdominal pain, weight gain (was a size 14, now an 18/20), headaches, irritability to the point where my colleagues at work keep away from me, loss of libido/dryness (havent had proper sex with my husband for about 18 months now) and loads more. I havent had hair loss or weird hair growth as yet though (fingers crossed). I have decided now to come off the Depo. I need to be me again. I feel like I'm losing myself. I'm so sad at the moment its ridiculous. So my next shot is due in April and I'm not going back. I'm scared of coming off though as I havent had my period (only spotting) for 18 months. But I'm going to try. I was only on this for my Endometriosis. Coming off this I have the chance the Endometriosis will come back but I'd rather that than this. It'll be condoms for me in the future (when I can actually do it again!!!)

I had this shot one time. Because the Dr. said I had to have it to have a procedure done. I should have refused. This shot has totally messed me up. I have been spotting/bleeding for 10 weeks. This is horrible. The Dr. put me on premarin to help stop but I have been taking that now for 2 weeks and no help. Any advise???

When I went back on the shot my hair started falling out in clumps again, I was extrememly depressed, my breast hurt at the slightest touch even my nipples would burn and my breasts were swollen, I would get bad migrane headaches and I would feel groggy all of the time, all that I wanted to do was sleep, my hands would swell so bad that I wouldn't be able to get my wedding ring off, I would be throwing up and sick at my stomach for days at a time, emotional, bloated I weigh maybe 100 pounds and I only gained about 3 or 5 pounds which is normal, Last time I was on the shot I had no period but this time I had one for 1month straight and I kept starting on and off but it wasn't just blotting they were heavy periods, I just didnt feel like myself anymore I was angry suicidle and had some pretty horrible thoughts of harming others I hated everyone around me.

I first went on the Generic Depo Provera shot my freshmen year of highschool when I was 15 because I had Ovarian Cysts. I would be taking a shower and washing my hair and my hair started falling out in large clumps, my period totally stopped and I knew that was a side effect, I was depressed and had suicidal thoughts, I hated everyone and often thought of harming others, I would cry at the drop of a hat. I stayed on the shot for 1 yr because my doctor recommended that I did after I explained my side effects to him so adventually I made my own decision to go off of it. I decided to go back on the shot this November because I wanted to be care free for my honey moon and I didnt want to have to worry about getting pregnant. I got the shot at a free clinic that was called tricap. Before I got the shot the nurses explained that if you stay on the shot for a yr that it can deteriorate your spinal cord and uterus. The nurses told me that the shot is no longer administered in the arm of buttox so they said either I could get it in the Thy or stomach. So I chose getting it in my stomach, then they told me that the shot could cause me stomach to dimple and it could eat the fat from my stomach, so I said okay and as soon as they administered the shot I passed out in the floor of the doctors office, they said it was because I was nervous, but I talked to another doctor and she said it was because I wasnt supposed to even get the shot because I was on my period when it was administered and my iron levels were way too low for the nurses even to consider giving me the shot. So I woke from being passed out and noticed that I had a huge lump in my stomach and the lump stayed their until the shot ran out, the whole 3 mo. When I talked to a doctor she said because of the lump it caused that isnt normal that the shot may not have been very effective

I am 15 years old, and i had tried four different types of birth control pills that didn't seem to work! My doctor perscribed the "Deppo" shot to me, and told me it was perfectly safe, it was the same as the pills except for i would have less periods of course. so i got it, and four weeks later i was still on my period. It was absolutley horrible, just w/ in the four weeks of being on the shot i had been EXTREMELY moody, emotional, and had major moodswings. I went to back to my doctor and she told me that this was completely normal. I ended up calling another doctor that i trusted and she told me that this was happening because of lack of estrogen, w/ out estrogen a womans body will acctually start getting some of the things that men have, Such as hairy chest, facial hair. Which would be absolutley horrible and embarassing. She put me on Kariva (It is a birth control pill w/ a high dose of estrogen) i just started today, she is trying to get my estrogen level back up to where it is supposed to be, so i take four a day for five days. so hopefully this helps out a little bit!! but, after this i'm going to try ANOTHER birth control that can hopefully regulate my cycle. I am not sexually active, i just want my period regulated so i'm not so miserable. does anyone have any ideas? please help!

Im sorry to hear about everyones problems with depo. i guess i was very lucky with it. it was about time i had some luck with contraception though because the pill totally messed with my body the whole time i was on it. On the pill my periods were so bad that at times i could barely stand up. i would get the biggest pains in my stomach that would have me doubled over and my periods were pretty constant. I went through three different types of pill, with little help from my University Dr. Eventually I did my own research and decided to go on the Depo. I was on it for three years with no period after the first month (it starts to feel a bit weird after a while). The nurse adviced me I should come off it as it is never a good idea to stay on it for more than a few years at a time, so i have just swapped to the implant and had it put in today. Fingers crossed I have no problems with it! Anyway...I guess what you have to remember is that not everyone will have the same effects and I guess its never great to be implanting hormones, swallowing hormones or injecting hormones in to your body!

Hi rock_angel_79,
I was on Depo for six years. For me it was great, I had no real side effects except no periods at all for six years. I wouldn't worry about not getting your period, it's very normal that they may dissapear while on Depo. It's also normal for you to get them irregularly. I would only be concerned and annoyed if I got them for weeks on end non-stop like some women do.
Regarding your other symptoms, it's hard to say if they are from Depo or stess has you have experienced a major change in your life recently. I have heard that if the side-effects of Depo don't settle down in three months then they aren't going to. Whether that is absolutely correct or not I can't say.
The only alternative I could suggest is rather than Depo, ask about Implanon (stick in your arm - lasts 3yrs, but you can have it taken out any time before that if you want). Now this is the same hormone as Depo but in a lower dose, so IF Depo is causing the moodiness etc, Implanon could do the same thing. On the other hand, since it's a lower dose it may not be as bad. And the good thing about TRYING Implanon is that once they take it out of your arm, it stops working and any symptoms should dissapear within a couple days, whereas Depo takes months to leave your system. There a several threads on Implanon you can read. Though lots of horror stories about it too I'm afraid. I had Implanon put in after my sixth year on Depo because I actually got a period and was so surprised I started reading up on why. So instead of getting another injection when it was due I got Implanon instead and had it in for 14mths. Same deal - great for me, only difference was I got my periods every couple months.I had it taken out 12 days ago to try to concieve. So having been on both I would suggest Implanon simply because if the side effects are bad for you, you just ask them to take it out and things should settle back down with the moddiness etc. Hope I've helped you a little. |

I had my 1st shot a little over a month ago & am due for my period but have not got it yet, hence why i'm online looking for an explanation.
I knew there were alot of side effects but didn't realise how many ppl had so many of all the effects at once.
I always get back pain before my period & am experiencing it now but worse i am wondering if its my period coming or an effect of the depo, i have also had heart burn, tiredness but cant sleep, moodiness(extreme), some hair loss but i just dyed my hair recently so unsure of the true cause, dryness & loss of libido which i put down to the tiredness. I am now strongly rethinking whether i have done the right thing all because i thought i was too forgetful to take the pill.
But as i have recently moved out of my ex's house taking our 2 children of 1yr & 2yrs with me i put alot of this down to stress of being a new single mum now i question if the depo is causing me to lose my mind and not my children who really are good children, i just dont have the patience i use to. I think only time will tell but now i am really starting to freak out.
FYI
I have read that depo should not be used when there is a history of depression & my doctor did warn me of weight gain (luckily i've had the opposite, so far!), abnormal bleeding or lack of & of the fact it can take 1 or 2 yrs to conceive again but it can take just as long after taking the pill for years.
I am a strong believer of different strokes for different folks but this depo is changing that & quickly! |

I'm getting worried... after reading some of the stories. I haven't experienced much of what most of you have and I'm worried that I will eventually. All I've noticed since I started taking the DEPO shot was weight gain (too much for my comfort)irritability, fatigue, and pain in my neck and shoulders. But i dont know if its from the shot. Is there an alternative to the pill? something I dont have to do every darn day?
