ok I have only read what a few of you have had to say about this and it seems to be doing more harm then anything someone should do something about it and have it stopped being distribute. especially now before too many young girls decide to have it just for the sake of not having a period and falling pregnant and find out later it is doing harm to their bodies I know one thing I wont let my daughters have it when they are old enough . Take some action ladies

joynesy79 - I feel for you & your family, truely I do.
I apsolutely despise this drug. After being a diligent patient, following my doctor's advice & instructions & of course the only course of action for me would be the Depo!! I had been on it for three years after having my 3 children when I started getting some nasty moode swings, I was tired, restless but thought it was just abit of low iron, even confirmed that with my local GP. I was on the Depo for 3 years, as soon as I had my third child - no period woohooo!! Not that at all now. My husband & I decided to try for our fourth baby 1 1/2 years ago, to no avail. Finally last month we found out we we're pregnant.
The joy and excitement lasted only for 2 days. I went for an ultrasound, no baby could be found. I was having an eptopic pregnancy. Advised by Doctor's to take the uninvasive approach which is a round of chemo as to destroy the rapidly growing cells of my baby & pass this through my body like a period. This method is apparantly 95% effective, of course I am the 5% that it does'nt work on. So my tube explodes anyway & I am rushed in for surgery. I awake to no baby & a nasty infection known as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. A disease caused by contracting clamyidia (STD). Never had it. Been tested every year for everything & never once had Clamydia. I'm told I've had this disease for about 3 years. Yes, around the time I first got the Depo shot. They say this because the infection was so severe that it had burnt itself out. Done its damage & died off. Do I blame this drug? YES.
There are no other variables associated with me except our beloved Depo! My advice, stay away from this drug. Don't even allow the idea of a period free life to sway you. If it does'nt effect you immediately it could affect you in the future. You could become infertile. I am. Your body is meant to have a period, what are they pumping us with to stop our bodies from doing the most natural things? Stay away from the Depo-Prevera sho!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
yes, I have read several places within the past year about the shot, and some doctors say that it could possiable be because of the shot, but no real reason is connected. I have to go see a surgon on monday the 23rd to see if I have to have it taken out, most likey signs say yes. I'm not very happy about it, but as for anything else, i've had no problems, no period, I do lack my sex drive, but i'm working on that with other alternatives, to spice it up some, if anyone has any ideas let me know thanks..gotta_love_me04@y ahoo.com

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I have nothing nice to say about this drug AT ALL. I have had the needle twice, once when I was 18 (bled non stop for 7 months, had to have a d&c to stop it, then after my first baby at 25, my gp suggested I try it again (this time bled for 6 months). I have since then had 2 abnormal smears. My eldest sister had the needle 10 years ago for a few years, tried to come off it to fall pregnant, bled for months and was then diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer. She has since been treated and cleared. My other sister has been on the needle for 10 years, swore by it, loved it until 2 years ago when she decided to stop having the needle for a year or two to give her body a break. She has been bleeding (even passing 3kg clots when she coughed)for 2 years now. She was diagnosed in January this year with stage 4 cervical cancer. She has had all the treatment and now we are waiting for her impending death. She and I ahve had heaps of talks about the needle and while there is no proof of depo being related to Cx cancer, she and I are sure that there has got to be something there??? There is no history of cancer in my family as far back as 3 generations. Stay away from the depo provera.

Oh and in case you think this is rare. During my difficult period I found a freinship at school with someone who was COMPLETELY BALD after taking depo for the first time. She said she felt like a cancer victim walking around.
NOT RARE .. ask around

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
My Proof
I had a depo shot in 2000. I was engaged during the happiest time of my life. I quickly began

1) losing my hair by the handful
2) suffering from major depression

I went to multiple doctors about the hairloss only to be told it must be stress I didnt know I had or alopecia. So then of course I was convinced being upset about going bald would complete the prophesy.
I also broke off my engagement as I was unable to get out of bed for weeks at a time with my sudden onset of depression. I did not figure out it was the depo at that time as I trusted the Doctors saying it was not dangerous.

I slowely recovered from these symptoms and five years later once again had a depo injection. Immediately I

1) Depression set in
2)Hair loss beyond belief
3) Migraine headaches 3-5 times a week (thought I had a tumor)

Immediately it hit me. Twice in my life immediately following depo shots. It has now been over a year since my shot. MY hair loss is slowing ( I figure its cause I have less to lose) and my headaches have stopped and depression has eased again. But I have yet to have a period and my latest hormone tests show
I make very little estrogen at all now.

Lastly, I had a miscarraige four months into my pregnancy that the doctors said was likely due to my hormonal imbalances.
What I wouldnt give to take those two shots back. Please please never take this hormone imbalancing injection.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Depo works different for everyone. I started taking it 12 years ago when my doctor told me at the start of my cycle, come in and get the shot. When I got home my cycle was over. I also divorced in 1992. Maybe three years after that my libido was gone. I dont miss it, but Im glad not to have a two week cycle. I do have constant neck tension, mild mood swings, no libido, and mild hair lost when washed. I enjoyed those quality family times with my one kid. Now my kid tells me that! I hope you get a man before I leave to go to college because I hate to leave you alone! But gotta go! I said let me get off depo. The 2nd month was painful! Breast pain, Cervical pain. I called my doctor quick like a fen for that shot! Whats up people?

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hi there. I have been on the depo provera shot now for about 13 years. I have been doing research into what to expect when I get off of it (in two more months). My OBGYN has told me that I seem to be the poster child for the depo shot, being that my side effects have been small or nonexistant. Here is how I justified the side effects: My hair has always been everywhere and I can't remember a time that I didn't lose it in the shower. My weight gain has been contributed to quitting smoking after 16 years. My grumpiness has also been contributed to the non-smoking issue. But lately for the past 3 times that I've gotten the shot, I've been dizzy, felt like passing out and my husband has had to sit me down and give me water to cool me down. My sex drive has decreased to almost nothing and the dryness is so uncomfortable I wonder if the side effect isn't a better form of birthcontrol than the actual shot. I was told 10 years into the shot, by way of a passing comment, that it's normal to expect about 5 pounds of weight gain for every year of depo use. Well, that sounds about right. I have about 30 extra pounds on me that I cannot get rid of and I work out, eat right and have an active lifestyle.
I wonder how many years I've been contributing my side effects to other things such as smoking. At any rate, I'll be off of the shot in another two months and I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that I'm not going to be one of the people that have a 3 month long period. Getting pregnant is not an issue for me since I have one healthy, handsome 15 year old son and I'm not trying for anymore. Everyone wish me luck in two more months!!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hi I am 36 years old. I went on Depo Feb 2006. I had gall bladder surgery about 3 weeks after. I had my period for 6 mos straight when I first went on it and when it finally stopped I was like whoa finally. Well for the past year and a half I have felt like garbage . I have been depressed, I am anti social and dont want to go anywhere. I dont really feel depressed anymore like I did a while back when I went on well butrin for a while but the muscle aches are going to kill me. My right leg hurts so bad. Feels like a sciatic nerve problem but I really think it is the depo so I am not going to get my next shot. My doctor well she kinda just blew me off this past Friday when I saw her for a physical, I also have headaches everyday and have absolutly no energy. I thought I never recovered from the surgery but now I really think it is the depo causing my misery.

Hi all I am 35 years old I took the shot In 1995 when it first came out I did't have health insurance and much to my horror found out that at that time depo was not even fully fda approved the govt. clinic was using me as a guinea pig! I only took one shot and my hair fell out my joints hurt so bad some mornings I could not walk. i gained a lot of weight and all these things have all been happening for 12 years this year was the first yeat since that i've had pigment in my skin and the hair loss has slowed a little but still no matter what I do I cannot lose the weight I have also suffered from depression and 5 years after just one shot I had a very hard time getting pregnant. which is really not like my body. this drug is dangerous!!!!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Depo Provera is a hormone... Just like any other birth controll. Before you put yourself on it RESEARCH IT. Its just as much your responsibility as your Dr's. It is the pregnancy hormone - Progesterone. It WILL make you gain weight and go through mood swings. Yes some people will lose hair. Breast tenderness is going to happen. And You may bleed or stop bleeding for an unknown amount of time. ALL of this is explaned by depo provera on the website, by doctors, and it should be logical that putting something like this (look how crazy pregnant women can get) into your body will cause these types of things.

I am now 20 years old. I have been on depo for 4 and a half years with a 4 month break between every 2 years. I have stopped my period- which was expected. I get dizzy, nauseous, and I get migrane head aches. People who arnt on birth controll go throough this too. Don't immeditely blame it on the birth controll. Speak to a Dr. I have gained a little weight too. 20 pounds (over 4 years) and yes I have went through depression (It had alot to do with how I was handling my life - school, broken engagement, family, etc...) I do go through mood swings, but I always have. And I have lost some interest in sex (I guess its holding up to its job as a birth controll if i don't want to have sex... J/k lol)But seriously Pregnancy, even though this birth control mimics the symptoms - makes a woman the same way.

I do not suggest this birth controll if you are mentally unstable, or over weight. It will cause the same symptoms of being pregnant. If you read up on it and speak to your doctor you should know this. If you have problems discontinue use..like any other medication. Because it is a shot you may need to take more hormones to even out the levels, but I would recomend just letting it wear off naturally.

ANY AND ALL birth controll has side effects. I would rather feel moody fat and tender then die of a stroke or heart attack from being on an estrogen type birth control ...

I am sorry if i have offended any one but i have also just read something , that you got the shot in the arm every doctor that has given me this shot has allways been in the backside . i have not written this to make you look silly , i just think the doctors have not explained enough info to you . when i was put on it i was given a full run down on it , this is why i am trying to tell you that it is only good if you no longer want a child . this does have a long term recovery to conceive . this shold be told to you when you see the doctor & allso it should be given in the backside . sorry again if i have offened you all . but i still belive that there is nothing wrong with depo. what works for one may not for another , just find out what works for befor you put the drug down . mazz

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I just started taking depo provera this month and I am already experiencing an array of effects. I am on the drug for severe menstrual problems and I knew there were some risks. I wish I had done further research because I have a period that seems to have no end in sight and I am experiencing the same old symptoms plus some extras. I have tried almost everything under the sun to control the way my period makes me feel since I was 13. I even considered a hysterctomy but didn't care much for the consequences of such a drastic measure. I haven't felt near as bad as some of you and hope I don't. Good luck to all of you in your search for a better way.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hello everyone! I've been watching this site for a few days and I just had to post! I've only had 2 depo shots, one in Feb and the last one in May. I'm working on 30 days of non-stop bleeding. I get headaches everyone once in awhile but I had that problem before the depo. Bleeding continuously for any longer than you have to is sooo frustrating! I got on the shot in hopes of getting rid of my period! Not to have it longer than before! I finally called my Dr and she prescribed me birth control pills. I just took the 3rd one today and I'm STILL bleeding. I'm worried I'm doing damage to my body with still having over a month left before I was supposed to get my next shot and now I'm taking bc pills on top of it. I will NOT be getting anymore depo shots! Ever! I'm just so tired of bleeding...lol...as awful as it sounds. I just don't know what else to do. If waiting it out is my only option...well then, that really sucks!! =[

Hi again,

I have been watching this site with interest over the last few days. And to the person that was the next reply, I know you didn't mean that I was ignorant. As I said before I believe everyone has had problems, and has been desperate enough to lay them out here for the world.

I am extremely disappointed that there are people that choose to demean the people looking for help.

In fact I wonder why the sceptics would find this site at all. Unless I had a problem with Depo I wouldn't have found it and I believe I am not alone there.

Please leave this as a place to find a common link to a very sensitive problem without being judged!

Its almost as though the drug becomes an addiction and your body starts to crave but just like any other harmful drug the more you do it...in this case the longer you stay on it..the more harm it does to you. and just to add to my above posting. when i was 20 i had a severe attack..my heart was raising so fast the medics couldn't even catch a pulse, after they rushed me to the hospital and 3hrs of testing the doctor came to me and straight out told me he had no medical explanation for what had happened to me....somedays i wonder if it was the depo? that was the only drug that had been getting put into my body

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
When i was 15 my doctor told me the best bc for me would be the shot i missed my shot by 2days and fell pregnant(luckily) up until then i had no problem with my shot other than severe migrains and doctors told me it was hereditary and have refused testing. Since i went back on the needle after my pregnancy i have to have my gall bladder removed, hair loss, and severe migraines to the point of knocking me out. I am now 23 & decided to quit the drug back in march, its now june and i still have not gotten my flow, just a little bit of spotting now and then that didnt even last a day and when i quit i had horrible mood swings,my weight fluctuates, hot flashes. i am not on any other medication so i know it has to be the depo.
