Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
i had no significant health issues prior to taking Depro, had maintained the same weight, give or take 5 lbs., for many yrs., and had no issue taking the weight off when it did fluxuate. I received my last shot in Nov. of 2006 (I received four shots total) and today am still experiencing many side effects. While taking Depro, my symptoms included excessive weight gain, major circulation issues (my arms would fall asleep repeatedly-very painful), chest pain, dry skin, strange rashes, low sex drive (high libido prior to receiving the shot) body aches, headaches, emotional swings, irregular bleeding, varicose veins, headaches, weakness, dizzy spells, nausea, blurry vision, and visually noticed loss of muscle tone. I gained 25 lbs. in a period of approx. two months despite my already extremely healthy dietary intake (I eat virtually no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, consume very few refined carbs, drink only purified water (no caffeine, no sodas, no juice, no aides), eat plenty of organic veggies, organic low fat lean meats, take supplements, etc.), weight which I cannot seem to take off despite having altered my dietary intake even more & regular exercise; my husband says my mood has been unexplainably tense, my body aches (I feel like a 60 yr. old), i've been bleeding incessantly for prolonged periods of time; at this point, for a month & 1/2 straight (heavy bleeding), i've developed varicose veins, i've noticed that it takes much longer for wounds to heal, am having acne, feel routinely fatigued and weak & must continually battle depression. If I weren't in touch with my spirituality most likely I would be insane by this point, especially after having tried to discuss what's transpiring in my body with doctors who have insisted it's not possible Depro caused these things, even giving me looks (you know that face that indicates "you must not be counting your calories accurately, you must be exaggerating about your bleeding...in other words, maybe you're a nut case)

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
hello,
i have been in worst situation than you "thefakekitty05" ,i was pregnant and i had an abortion because me and my husn=band were not ready for it at the moment. after the abortion ,they gave me choises of BC ,so i choose the depot shot .that was the worst thing i ever done in my life.since i took the shot , the bleeding didn't stop for 2 first months, after that i had to take the 2nd shot and the period was irregular at that time. i have stoped the shot after 6 months of using it.not even 3 weeks ,i had my period and a very severe bleeding. it lasts for 3 weeks ending up in the hospital. i had stayeeed 3 weeks in the intensive care in the hospital . they told me that i lost more than 2/3 of my body blood . i get anemia ofcourse .
it's been a almost 1.5 years now since i stoped the shot.
in june 2007 , i got pregnant , but i had miscourage and they give me again the shot .i just took it for 3 months now and my second is due the end of this month of august2007. i have been spting for a week and bleeding for almost 3 weeks after my 1 shot .
i don't know what to do ,because if i knew that the depot shot had caused me whole thing i wouldn't touched it. but the doctors unfortunatly don't tell the whole truth ,becaue they are making money anyway of using this poison .not a medecine.
i need some help from anyone who is using a different method of BC as pills or anything else besides this F'' shot.
please be very careful , i do not want my situation to happen to any women of my age"24".

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Just thought I would add into these messages the only drug that I found helped with the bleeding. Dr's put me different pills all the time to try and stop the bleeding,...... the only one that had any effect was a bery small glass bottle with the tiniest little tablets,.... Im pretty sure they were called Nimulet Profen.. I have had a few people ask me how I stopped the bleeding and this drug did work (quite quickly I might add) Talk to your dr about it!!!!!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Okay I am replying to my own message lol. I guess this is how you do it. I had surgery in May to get checked for endometrosis which they found that I didn't have. The reason they thought this is b/c I have been dealing with severe pain during my period for years and throwing up with fevers and chills. The doctor who did my surgery decided to give me the depo shot in May right after my surgery. I gained 20 pounds which had me so upset, I lost that weight though right away b/c I went on a diet and barely ate. I have been dealing with severe chronic pain in my stomach every single day, I have been in and out of the ER, getting test to check for all types of things. I also bleed for 23 days after the shot and was told I should bleed for 6-12 but didn't really think much of that. It stopped and about a week later I was spotting every single day brownish to black. My pain is so bad that I can't do regular things, I am on the ground screaming and crying with such bad pain and cannot stand up. They gave me pain pills which helps for a few hours, it is now August and the shot should be just about out of me. I had my first period that started 2 days ago and am dealing with even more pain now. I don't know if this is due to the shot or maybe theres something else wrong with me. I can't work or go back to college, my life has changed and I lay in bed with a heating pad everyday and my boyfriend stays in with me. If anyone knows if this could be due to the shot or has dealt with this please let me know. I am hoping after this first period in 3 months maybe this pain will stop and I can live my life normally again. I would NEVER recommend this shot to ANYONE, and I will not get on this again.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Can you update me on your symptoms after getting off Depo after 13 years? I have been on Depo since August of 1993. I went off of it twice during that time and became pregnant within a month of going off of it (never even had a period). I now have two lovely children. I went off the shot last month after seeing a personal trainer to try and lose weight. I currently weigh about 145lbs but want to get back to 125 (which is what I weighed before Depo). By the way, I eat very healthy, run 6 miles 5 days a week and lift weights 3 days a week and CAN'T DROP A POUND. I jumped online to research Depo after the personal trainer told me about a bunch of horror stories. I NEVER realized all of the symptoms I had experienced over the years could be from the shot (hair loss, loss of libido, mood swings, cracking joints, tender breasts with discharge, etc...). I just went in every 3 months and got the poke; no questions asked. I was supposed to get the shot on July 3rd, 2007 and now (August 13th, 2007) I have still not had a period or seen any type of change in symptoms. Is there hope to return to normal?

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I WAS READING SOME OF THE HORROR STORIES ABOUT DEPO PROVERA AND AFTER READING THOSE STORIES I AM CHOOSING NOT TO GO BACK TO MY OB DOCTOR IN OCTOBER FOR ANOTHER SHOT. I HAVE BEEN ON IT OFF AND ON FOR 7 YEARS WITHOUT A PERIOD EXCEPT FOR WHEN I STOPPED IT TO GET PREGNANT WITH MY SON. AND AFTER I HAD MY SON BUT SOON AFTER i WENT BACK ON IT AND HAVE HAD NO PERIODS SINCE. SO I HAVE HAD WEIGHT GAIN, HAIR LOSS, AND NO PERIODS. WOMEN HAVE DIED TAKING THIS DRUG DUE TO BLOOD CLOTS. I STRONGLY ADVISE ANYONE WHO TAKES DEPO TO QUIT TAKING IT. ITS NOT GOOD FOR YOU AND SINCE i HAVE BEEN ON IT FOR 7 YEARS I PROBABLY WILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH BONE LOSS AND OSTEOPOROSIS LATER IN LIFE. ONE HORROR STORY I READ STATED PROBLEMS WITH THIS GIRLS GALL BLADDER AND WHEN I HAD CAT SCANS BEFORE I WAS HOSPITALIZED IN MARCH SHOWED PROBLEMS WITH MY GALL BLADDER SO NOW i AM WONDERING IF THAT WAS RELATED TO THE DEPO PROVERA.

dont let depression get you down..its all psychological and its up to you to beat it. Think of all the wonderful things about yourself and how blessed you are to be alive with family who loves you. And if you dont have family who loves you..f 'em! Be grateful you're breathing another day. Nothing's promised to us.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
One thing I'm curious about, is whether or not my experience is the same as those of you who are suffering from the negative side-effects of Depo. In my case, my doctor DIDN'T EVEN SIT DOWN WITH ME TO DISCUSS THE PROS AND CONS OF THIS DRUG. NEITHER MY DOCTOR NOR HIS NURSE EVER TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A BAD DRUG FOR THOSE WITH A HISTORY OF CHEMICAL DEPRESSION. What I'm wondering is, how many of you feel that you were given the opportunity to make an educated decision about Depo (meaning that your doctor or one of his/her staff REALLY discussed the medication with you)? On the other hand, how many of you had an experience like mine where I was just told it was a good option, I should do it, and that was it?

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
My doctor REALLY messed up. I know now, about a week since my first post here, that I NEVER should have been given the shot considering my history of Chemical Depression (which is in my family as well) and my Panic Disorder. My doctor was an absolute jerk to give this to me and when I called him to tell him that I was having problems with my Panic Disorder symptoms, he tried to tell me that I had an underlying history of the depression and Panic, it wasn't the shot... well, DUH, I SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE SHOT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! We need to get the message out to doctors and other women that this shot is poison to women with Panic, Anxiety or Depression! I'm slowly getting better, but I still have 22 days of this junk in my system, during which every day is a struggle with my anxiety and sadness. It's absolutely inhumane what these shots can do to women!

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I had taken the shot years ago and not had any problems that I can remember - I recently started getting the shot again - November, 2006 and last shot on July 26, 2007...And, I am not happy at all...Mood swings, tired all the time, don't want to do the things I liked before, stomach is bloated all the time - can't wait to get home and get my BIG jammies on, so my belly can get some relief...I feel gross, hair is falling out, just feel ugly and gross - can't seem to put it any other way - I wish I hadn't got this last shot - I am really started to freak a little bit about all this - especially after reading all the other horror stories on here - At least I know I'm not crazy...Just miserable...I am NOT getting another shot and will tell everyone who will listen to stay away from this horrible, horrible drug...I just want to feel good again...Take care everyone and please let me know how you all are doing and what I can expect this next year or so - while my body tries to recover from this - give me strength...

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
SORRY FELT THE NEED TO POST AGAIN AND BE HONEST.
NOW ANYONE WHO HAS HAD FAMILY HISTORY OF DEPRESSION SHOULD NOT BE ON THIS, SO DOCS SHOULD NOT RECCOMMEND IT, IT CLEARLY STATES THIS ON THE INFORMATION LABEL. ALSO I ALWAYS HAD IT IN MY BACKSIDE AND WHAT DIFF IT MAKES TO WHERE YOU GET IT I DONT KNOW. I TOTALLY HAD NO SEX DRIVE NO LUBRICATION AT ALL (THOUGHT I WAS REALLY ILL AS AGTER SEX WOULD BE SORE FOR 4 WEEKS OR MORE JUST DOWN TO DRYNESS AFTER MONTHS OF TESTS) ALSO HD TERRIBLE ADULT ACNE HUGE CYSTS AND BOILS ETC, TOTAL AGONY, IT JUST DAWNED ON ME ONE NIGHT WHILE I WAS CRYING THAT I HAD NO ACNE WHILE TRYING TO GET PREG WHILE I WAS PREG OR AFTER I HAD BABY UNTIL I WENT BACK ON DEPO. SO AFTER RESEARCHING IT FOUND IT CAUSES ACNE, NO SEX DRIVE, DRYNESS ETC. THIS COULD ALL BE PUT DOWN TO SIDE EFFECTS SO I NEVER MENTIONED IT TO DO *** IL I NEVER GOT LAST INJECTION (WAS DUE APRIL). SINCE THEN I HAVE GOT SEX DRIVE BACK, NO DRYNESS, AND ALSO NO ACNE ALL WITHIN 3 WEEKS OF STOPPING. I DONT THINK THIS IS JUSY A COINCIDENCE, FAR FROM IT, I ALSO NOW HAVE FIBRO MYALGIA AND ONE OF THE CAUSES OF THIS IS FOUND THAT WOMEN WITH IT HAVE INCREASED HORMONE LEVELS. SAME WITH HEADACHES ACNE ETC. WONDER WHY SOOME ONE WOULD RESEARCH IT IF THEY WERE HAPPY WITH IT THEN FIND HERE AND PUT COMMENTS IF THEY WERE HAPPY WITH IT. FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS I HAVE TOLD FRIENDS AND FAMILY HOW GOOD DEPO WAS, BUT NOW I WOULD NOT GIVE IT TO MY ENEMY. I TAKE OTHER MEDS THAT I DONT USE AS AN EXCUSE FOR ILLNESS BUT THIS IS TRUE OF DEPO, IT CAUSED MY ACNE AND MANY OTHER SYMPTOMS. SO AS WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS THE LAST TIME I CHECKED, I DO NOT BELIEVE DEPO SHOULD BE USED, WE ARE OVER DOSING IN HORMONES, HOW SHOULD OUR BODDIES COPE.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Hi Marilyn, as you are not suffering I think you can only speak for yourself. I have been off since march and within 2-3 weeks my acne cleared. I was on it from the age of 17 and now 32. Also it is not normal for periods not to return. I had sign that i could not have kids due to depo and within a month pregnant so it also masks what is actually going on. I also never had a period after coming off depo for over 13 months before falling pregnant. that is NOT normal, no other contraception does this. I loved depo until i discovered it was causing me acne and then realised thats wasnt the only thing causing me trouble. also mabey you should ask your doctor why they are giving you depo, when it CLEARLY READS ON THE INFORMATION LEAFLET "DOT TO BE GIVEN TO ANYONE WITH A FAMILY HISTORY OF DEPRESSION" since your family have it. Docs really dont think about what they give out.. I have studied the label since reading horro stories and should never have been given it as I also have depression history not only in muself but in the family.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I'm just wondering, since it takes time to build up in the blood, will it also dissipate if I don't get my next shot? This is my first shot, but I had a history of Panic Disorder and Chemical Depression that my doctor either missed or didn't think would matter and I have been feeling horrible since I got the shot two months ago. I just want to be myself again.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I got on depo when I got married in 2001. I had just taken my second shot when I started having a stiff neck, and neck pain. I had spotting and bleeding problems, all-over aches and pains, weakness/fatigue to the point that I had to quit my job. I kept going to the dr, trying to figure out what was wrong with my neck...after several months and 3 or 4 different dr's, they found cysts on my thyroid. I did not have thyroid disease. I asked them if this could be related to the shot, and they told me NO WAY! I went thru several biopsies of the cysts and some swollen lymph nodes to make sure they weren't cancerous. I am a singer/pianist and I was unable to sing or hardly even talk because of the pain. I lived with the pain for over a year, taking 4 Advil almost every 4 hours, just to be able to function. I had extreme fatigue/weakness. I had severe depression, which I just contributed to the fact that I was so ill. After a year and 3 months, I searched the shot online, and found the horror stories website. I stopped the shot, and could tell a difference within a month or so of it wearing off! I was amazed. I got on birth control pills 2 months later, and after a month all my symptoms begin to return. Several months later I had severe ovary pain, and they found cysts on my ovaries. I started a hormone called Activella to help shrink them. Within a month, all my symptoms returned again. Every dr I have told this to, has blown it off or said it shouldn't have happened, but it did. It has been 6 yrs, and every year my neck pain gets better. Needless to say, I do not take ANY drugs that have any type of synthetic hormone in them anymore. I still have issues with it, but I am able to sing again, and only have to take Advil when I am going to do a lot of singing. I did not do any "detox" program, thankfully it left my system on its own.

ok I have only read what a few of you have had to say about this and it seems to be doing more harm then anything someone should do something about it and have it stopped being distribute. especially now before too many young girls decide to have it just for the sake of not having a period and falling pregnant and find out later it is doing harm to their bodies I know one thing I wont let my daughters have it when they are old enough . Take some action ladies

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
joynesy79 - I feel for you & your family, truely I do.
I apsolutely despise this drug. After being a diligent patient, following my doctor's advice & instructions & of course the only course of action for me would be the Depo!! I had been on it for three years after having my 3 children when I started getting some nasty moode swings, I was tired, restless but thought it was just abit of low iron, even confirmed that with my local GP. I was on the Depo for 3 years, as soon as I had my third child - no period woohooo!! Not that at all now. My husband & I decided to try for our fourth baby 1 1/2 years ago, to no avail. Finally last month we found out we we're pregnant.
The joy and excitement lasted only for 2 days. I went for an ultrasound, no baby could be found. I was having an eptopic pregnancy. Advised by Doctor's to take the uninvasive approach which is a round of chemo as to destroy the rapidly growing cells of my baby & pass this through my body like a period. This method is apparantly 95% effective, of course I am the 5% that it does'nt work on. So my tube explodes anyway & I am rushed in for surgery. I awake to no baby & a nasty infection known as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. A disease caused by contracting clamyidia (STD). Never had it. Been tested every year for everything & never once had Clamydia. I'm told I've had this disease for about 3 years. Yes, around the time I first got the Depo shot. They say this because the infection was so severe that it had burnt itself out. Done its damage & died off. Do I blame this drug? YES.
There are no other variables associated with me except our beloved Depo! My advice, stay away from this drug. Don't even allow the idea of a period free life to sway you. If it does'nt effect you immediately it could affect you in the future. You could become infertile. I am. Your body is meant to have a period, what are they pumping us with to stop our bodies from doing the most natural things? Stay away from the Depo-Prevera sho!
