| hello i have been on generic depo (medroxyprogestron) for over two years now, and honestly i love it. the first nine months or so i had random bleeding and cramps, but ever since then i haven't had a cramp or a single spot since. it does make me tired and fatigued the first couple weeks of the cycle, but not bad. the first couple injections cause sore muscles, but i think that has a lot to do with the nurse giving it. i have gained about thirty pounds, which didn't hurt since i was a zero, but being only five two it is definetly noticable. but i haven't gained more in over six months. i really like it because with no insurance its cheaper than the pill and i save money on tampons. its nice because my hormones stay stable with no period so i rally dont have mood swings. i did in the beginning though. a bit loss in sex drive too but he'll survive. it gets better the longer i've been on it, i really do like it for the most part, and think everyone is different ad reactes different. it really helps with my cysts where the pill didn't. which is nice. hope this helps |

| I am 20 yrs and was on the depo shot from the age of 14 to 18. I got off the shot when I went into the military. After being off the shot for about 7 months I started my period. This wasn't any normal period I had it for 3 months straight. I was put on hormones and pills to stop the bleeding but nothing worked. I had cysts form and the ruptured inside of me and I had to undergo surgery. About 3 weeks after my surgery I had the same problem again. I got discharged from the Army b/c I was on bedrest and was sick for 7 months. This has been ongoing for over a year now. My period would come for 2 weeks stop 2 days come for 3 weeks. My body did whatever it wanted to. I finally got sick real bad again in April 2007 and got put on a Lupron shot. After being on the shot for 6 months I am starting a new form of birth control. Hopefully this will fix the problem. Has anyone else experienced any of these problems?? |

| I was on Depo for 3 years until I stopped to have my 2nd child (I was pregnant within 2 months of stopping) I never had any side affects whilst on DEPO. I recently went back to the doctor to start taking Depo again since I have stopped breastfeeding and my dostor is refusing to use it on me again because she says there is a risk of osteo, now there is no other long term contrceptive I am comfortable with. |

| Hi. I have been reading up on some of the horror stories associated with the depo-provera shot and thought I would add to the dicussion. I have been off of the shot now for 9 months, meaning my last injection was around the first of Dec 2006 (after getting the shot for 2 years). I have experienced deadly side effects from this injection. I was hospitalized in Feb. for an unexplained accumulation of fluid around my heart, and had to have emergency surgery to have it removed. I have since then been swelling/retaining fluid in all parts of my body. I have been told that I have Lupus, but none of my doctors can seem to determine where the fluid is coming from. Has anyone out there had a similar experience? If so do you have any advice for me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and by the way the doctors are acting as though they never heard of side effects of this sort associated with the depo shot. |

| So I saw the fertility doctor. He said that he agrees that my system is completely out of whack because of the Depo-Provera shot. He also said that he has had patients go to him for advice whose systems were still irregular after two years! Because I am wanting to get pregnant a.s.a.p. before my endometriosis takes over he recommended fertility shots (Follistim) to me. My insurance doesn't cover it which means it will cost me over $2000/mo should we decide to go that route so I have some thinking to do. |

Thanks i dont go back to the docs for 2 weeks now so as they will be due while i am away for the long week end which im not happy about i am going to ask him about the tablets he was talking about as i stated im in a catch 22 situation as the depo gave me clots in the leg which broke of and went to my lung so with all that they say no contraception of any kind but to me all i want is to get them back to normal how they were b4 i took that shot i wish i never had it now that i know what it can do to me the pill would of been safer, but with me being on blood thinners they wont give me a thing so will keep you posted on what he says.
Good luck with the fertility clinic let us know how you get on i am not wanting any more kids i am just happy watching my 2 grand kids grown up with another due in a few weeks. good luck. |

Calais62,
Thanks for that information...Definitely let me know what they prescribe to you. My doctor said that the pill was the only way to stop the excessive bleeding but I think there has to be something else that will stop the bleeding and allow me to get pregnant at the same time. Hopefully. I am actually going to see a fertility specialist next week so hopefully he'll have some useful information to share... |

Hi,
When i went in to the hospital here for excessive bleeding as i was becoming anemic from loss of blood, I had the hospital OB/GYN come to see me and she wanted to operate on me do a D&C and place a mirena in my uterus to stop the bleeding this apparently lasts for 5 years alot of people get it done at the doctors surgery but as they could not see the top of my uterus they had to put me to sleep, i didnt want this so i have not had it done but apparently this was her plan of attack to control it.
I got my period again on the 27th sept and it started out as normal but by day 3 i was passing small clots and im think oh no not again but i had an appointment at my local doctors on the friday so i said something to him he tells me that if i was still bleeding when i came back to see him for my next blood test in a few days he was going to put me on medication to slow it or stop it as it stopped i never got a chance to find out what he was going to give me but as they will return soon i will be asking him for this medication before it comes back so i am armed with it all. I will let you know how i go but as im here in Australia it maybe different thee in the USA. |

| Yes I would definitely relate your problems to the Depo-shot. I took the shot to help shrink my endometriosis beginning in Nov. 2006 and I had my last shot in March 2007. I bled the entire time I was on the shot. In fact, I got married June 1 and the doctor put me on orthotricyclene in addition to the shot in order for me to not bleed on my honeymoon. Luckily, my honeymoon week was the ONLY week I have not bleed. Here it is September and I am bleeding heavier than ever. I had laparascopic surgery (for the second time) two weeks ago to laser out the majority of the endo which would have stopped the bleeding if it was from the endometriosis. My doctor says the bleeding is coming from my uterus which means that it is basically an everlasting "period." I am tired, having headaches, depressed, and ALWAYS bleeding excessively. I am supposed to be trying to get pregnant asap and if I'm not pregnant my doctor wants to put me on the lupron shot...which I'm not looking forward to if it is anything like the depo shot. Also, he says if the bleeding persists he may have to put me back on orthotricyclene. So, things are not looking up as far as pregnancy and I'm now thinking of dropping all of my classes in order to have enough energy to go to work everyday and do basic housework. I do not recommend this shot to anyone. My younger sister recently quit taking the shot and she has now been bleeding for 9 weeks. Does anyone have any advice regarding excessive bleeding or getting pregnant after the shot and has your doctor prescribed anything to stop the bleeding??? |

Hi kblaze,
I just read your comment regarding depo and it sounds so familar to mine i decided last year to go the depo needle as i was sick of my periods every month to say the least so in october i have my first injection then another in january then i became so sick had water on the lungs and ended up in ICU for 10 days the docs telling me i had 3 days to a month to live well i proved them wrong there as i am still here, anyway after getting out of one hospital i was transfered to another for a sleep study as they say i stop breathing in my sleep so i am now on a machine at night to keep me breathing. Anyway while there they decided to do a battery of tests one being put into a machine that comes down on me with milimetres left for me to breathe i found out im clostophobic anyway after that test they sent me for a doppler on my leg as the test b4 revealed a few small clots in my lung so they got the doppler on my leg and found a huge clot there life threathening. so they put me straight on to heprin to thin the blood and now i am taking warafin which does not help me in the monthly cycles. The doc will not allow me to take any contraceptive pill due to the fact that i have had DVT and Pulmonary Embolism, so with that when my period finally arrived in june this year it was like a tap and kept coming for over 6 weeks which i told the doctor he said just sit it out but i told him my problem was not just the bleeding i was losing clots like the size of watermelons to say the least well he was not too concerned but i was i was getting ver anemic and yes you guessed it i ended up in hospital and got 8 units of blood transfused into me. they wanted to operate to do a D & C but i didnt really want that my periods were very normal b4 taking the depo needle now i have hell every time i have my periods. what did the doctor prescribe for you to help im in OZ but im sure we have similar stuff here any way just adding my 2 cents worth dont touch the stuff it give you clots. |

If you have been diagnosed with polycytic ovary syndrome you wi;ll be aware that one of the symptoms of it is excess weight and I am guessing you will be unable to prove that it did not exist before the depoprovera. If you have a good doctor he should have/would have taken a thorough medical history and also given you leterature about the injection.Did you ask about possible side effects?
I speak from experience as I have had polycystic ovaries for many, many years and ha ve done a lot of research about it. In fact I was put on the oc pill to control it.If treated correctly surgery is NOT always required on the cysts depends on their size and symptoms.
ALL WOMEN NEED TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR CONTRACEPTIVE. Some have nasty side effects and it depends on what suits you. |

| (cont'd) the cyst has pushed my uterus out of place and its pushing against my back. unfortunately i had no idea i had this cyst until it got that big. I ran out of insurance coverage and $ to afford more right after i found out. having to rely on other means of health coverage for this kind of thing has been a nightmare. I am in constant pain and fatigue, not to mention that my body is producing its own female and adrenal hormones double time because of the stress the cyst puts on my organs. i've lost my job over not being able to show up on time or at all literally because of the pain. I should be going into surgery soon and i hope that after surgery my body can go back to normal, or at least, as close as it can get to normal. I strongly believe that the excessive amount of synthetic hormones from the shot and its after affects caused the cyst to form on my ovary. i was a totally HAPPY, HEALTHY, and normal woman before that drug entered my system. any advice, research or info please contact me @ yahdudeirock7@hotmail.com |

| does anyone have any research or suggestions toward depo being associated with pcos and ovarian cysts, and any mood disorders it can cause due to the chemical and hormonal imbalances the shot often off-sets? And also any information about filing a lawsuit against the shot's producers or the lack of information given to patients? any and all info would be greatly appreciated please send it to yahdudeirock7@hotmail.com . my name is andrea and i only had the shot one time. as insane as it sounds, eversince that one time...my body has never been the same. The only thing the doctor told me was that it may "make you moody and you may have some spotting". Nothing about weight gain or anything like that. It wasnt til a college classmate of mine who saw me pre to post shot noticed a significant change in the once always smiling and upbeat classmate to "a girl who's aura looks barely alive". During the course of having the shot i gained between 40 and 50 lbs during the course of 2 months &have had a lot of problems losing the weight. I felt so fatigued i stopped being active whereas pre-shot i used to be a dancer and was studying dance at the local college. My moods became so irratic i thought i was going crazy. I stopped caring about school& became extreamely depressed.my boyfriend broke up with me bcause of my mood swings. he said he felt like he didnt even know me anymore. i even seeked psychological help, then i was approached by a fellow classmate who showed me her research on depo-provera and i realized this drug is horrible and it's hurt me so much! I did not go back for another shot. i had a couple months of pure mood swing hell after that. then came the near month long periods and the near day long periods. the moods improved for a period of time until one day i started having the same hormonal-type mood swings as the shot. i went into the doctor originally for what i thought was a kidney infection, but i now have a cyst on my ovary nearing the size of a grape-fruit |

I feel it was VERY unsafe to have this injection soon after giving birth and I am a health professional in the field of obstetrics. It can take up to 6 weeks for the normal vaginal disharge to stop after having a baby so I am guessing that all your problems stemmed from the fact that the normal discharge was halted by the injection. Some women can haemmorrhage weeks after their baby is born.
I have checked the website and it says it should not be given till at least 6 weeks after birth to nursing mothers!
MAybe you should ask the doctor why he gave it so early?? perhaps condoms were a better option till your body returned to its pre pregnancy state, |

| OK ALL - Here is my disaster - I was given the depo shot the day I had my son - and of course after child birth - you will say yes to any birth control ;) - After being on it for 4 years - I gained 50lbs and never had a period, never spotted even. I decided to get off the shot - after 1 year - I still hadn't had a period - then all of the sudden I began having severe pain. Then my roommate at the time - suggested I might be pregnant and having a miscarriage. The pains were coming every 5 minutes and did feel like contractions. So I went to the emergency room. After 5 pregnancy tests and they all were negative. The Doc does an ultra sound and exact words were "You are gettign ready for one hell of a period". Because it had been so long since I had a period - my uterus was so swollen that it was twisted with my bladder and it actually was contracting. Once my period began after a couple days. I dropped clots the size of baseballs for 1 month and still continued to have contractions for another 2 months. I couldn't work and was on all kinds of medicine. It was the worst experience ever. Imagine being on in hardcore labor for 3 months. Everytime I had a contraction I would drop a clot - it was awful!! The Doctor said he has seen 100's of the exact same thing on Depo. I warned my friend on what had happened to me but of course everyone is different. But, 2 years later she stopped and the same thing happened. I have just heard too many bad cases than good - I would NEVER recommend it. |

i would suggest that you seek out a non-hormonal option. I tried the Paraguard IUD, which is non-hormonal, without success, but, I've read plenty of good testimonials regarding it. You would be a good candidate if you've already had a child and don't plan on having another child for several years (it lasts 10 yrs.). Otherwise, if you have a normal menstrual cycle, you should consider the cycle beads. NO HORMONES, INEXPENSIVE, 95% EFFECTIVE, ALL NATURAL. www.cyclebeads.com
While pills are a safer option than Depo, you're still pumping synthetic hormones into your body, so there's no way of knowing what "side effects" might occur. Whatever the case may be, just be sure to do your own research prior to making a decision so that you can make an informed decision.
Peace & Blessings,

| My gyno gives the shot every 11 weeks. Anyways I happened upon this board because I was looking for information on if Depo provera affects "wetness," wondering if that could be the cause of my problems... In searching, it seems that it can be... However, apart from my lack of sexual interest since depo, and lack of ability to produce lubrication... the only other problem that ive had is that every few months i get my period for about a whole month... the doctors just take notes. anyways... im supposed to get my next shot in 2 days, but i think that instead i'll switch to another type of birth control... any suggestions? |

An excellent alternative to chemical birth control is the Natural Family Planning Method utilizing Cycle Beads. Despite my hesitation regarding chemical birth control, I didn't believe there was a viable Natural option available to me because the failure rate of the Rhythm Method has been reported to be rather high. Cycle Beads however, is an entirely different method. If I would have known about it & it's effectiveness rate prior to having sought out chemical birth control I never would have chosen chemicals. Turns out, one of the nurses in my doctors office mentioned this method to me after hearing my story & highly recommended it!

After extensive research, I've discovered a number of things one can do to assist their body in removing the chemicals. Because the steroids get into ones liver, among other parts of the system, cleansing the system with natural products is a start. There are MANY products on the market for this. I have tried a few that I didn't care for and am now using products from a company called Global Healing Center www.ghchealth.com and find their products are working effectively and gently (no cramping). I have also considered the Master Cleanse. It involves fasting, which is not easy, however, it may be necessary to give your body a break from digestion, thus allowing for a more effective detoxification www.thelemonadediet.com. As well, I am considering limiting my dietary intake to raw foods exclusively for a time. I have found a number of women who after becoming seriously ill due to Depro took this route and experienced substantial healing. http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/rawfood2.htm
To address hormonal imbalance (Depro functions to kick the body into a menopausal state) there are natural alternatives. Check into Bio Identical Hormones as well as locating a physician who practices alternative medicine in your area. Serious Health Food stores may be able to provide some recommendations.

Ladies, I've posted a comprehensive report on Depo/Depro Provera Birth Control Shot Below. Had to piece it in sections due to yahoo's length of post restrictions & can see that there are parts missing. If you would like me to send you a copy of the report feel free to contact me @ lalaluv4u@yahoo.com & I'll be happy to email it to you for easier reading. If you are considering getting on the shot, please take time to read over the info so that you can make an informed decision. If you're already experiencing illness as a result of depo, i've listed many links that you might find helpful. Researchers had never seen such aweful side effects as the one's they saw when conducting clinical (animal trials & human) on Depo, yet they pushed to have the FDA approve the drug anyway. Even though the drug may not make everyone sick, it has been making thousands of women sick & this continues on today, while the Manufacturers are raking in the profits. Whether you've personally suffered or not, please take time to sign the petition to get this off the market.

WHAT THE DOCTOR WON'T TELL YOU ABOUT DEPO!
I had no significant health issues prior to taking Depro, had maintained the same weight, give or take 5 lbs., for many yrs., and had no issue taking the weight off when it did fluxuate. I received my last shot in Nov. of 2006 (I received four shots total) and today am still experiencing many side effects. While taking Depro, my symptoms included excessive weight gain, major circulation issues (my arms would fall asleep repeatedly-very painful), chest pain, dry skin, strange rashes, low sex drive (high libido prior to receiving the shot) body aches, headaches, emotional swings, irregular bleeding, varicose veins, headaches, weakness, dizzy spells, nausea, blurry vision, and visually noticed loss of muscle tone. I gained 25 lbs. in a period of approx. two months despite my already extremely healthy dietary intake (I eat virtually no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, consume very few refined carbs, drink only purified water (no caffeine, no sodas, no juice, no aides), eat plenty of organic veggies, organic low fat lean meats, take supplements, etc.), weight which I cannot seem to take off despite having altered my dietary intake even more & regular exercise; my husband says my mood has been unexplainably tense, my body aches (I feel like a 60 yr. old), i've been bleeding incessantly for prolonged periods of time; at this point, for a month & 1/2 straight (heavy bleeding), i've developed varicose veins, i've noticed that it takes much longer for wounds to heal, am having acne, feel routinely fatigued and weak & must continually battle depression. |

| If I weren't in touch with my spirituality most likely I would be insane by this point, especially after having tried to discuss what's transpiring in my body with doctors who have insisted it's not possible Depro caused these things, even giving me looks (you know that face that indicates "you must not be counting your calories accurately, you must be exaggerating about your bleeding...in other words, maybe you're a nut case), now maybe that was simply my own perception, but, two things are for certain; I listened to the doctor very carefully and read all material given to me regarding depro & the only side effects listed were possible weight gain (which the doctor minimized saying it should only be around 5 lbs., NOT 5-10 lbs. per shot! The only other side effects listed were possible headaches, back pain, & increased risk for osteoporosis, which I was told would be resolved by taking calcium/vitamin d supplements. This drug is poison and needs to be taken off the market. To all of my sisters now suffering from this, may God touch your spirit. Respectfully, while counting calories, eliminating refined sugar from your diet, drinking plenty of purified water, minimizing salt intake, eating lots of green veggies (organically grown), non processed foods, and organic meats (hormone free) is essential to maintaining your health (esp. in light of all the chemicals & synthetic substances being added to foods, many women are experiencing excessive weight gain after having taken Depro that is NOT contributed to dietary intake. Everyone's body is different. Some women may experience weight loss while on the Depro, but, after having scoured over hundreds upon hundreds of testimonies, most are experiencing the opposite effect: excessive weight gain & many of these women are stating that this occurred with no dietary changes. As well, many women are stating that once they stopped getting the shot, they have found it extremely difficult to drop the weight, even after many yrs., ... |

| Just think about it for a moment. If you've spoken to your doctor about the illnesses you began experiencing after receiving Depro there must be other patients who have also spoken to that same doctor about it. Yet, many continually maintain that the illness could not possibly be linked to Depro. In my case, as well as in many other cases, doctors attempt to address the symptoms by putting you on another drug, but, the very reason why your hormones became imbalanced in the first place, which is what's leading to all the illness, is because of synthetic hormones (in all birth control except Paraguard IUD). Drug Companies create synthetic hormones because they're not allowed to patent natural hormones (such as Bio Identical Hormones/plant based), they can however patent man made substances And PROFIT BIG TIME, which is precisely why they're pushing this *** . Synthetic hormones are not the same as natural hormones. They are chemicals designed to trick the body into (hopefully) responding in the same manner as it would if the natural hormone were releasing into your system. Here lies the problem. Often times the body is NOT tricked thus resulting in what we call "side effects". In the 80's when manufacturers tested Depro on animals (Rhesus Monkeys, Beagles, and Rats) the side effects were undeniable, however, they pushed the drug regardless, dismissing the side effects away by saying the animals system was different than humans.....yet they conducted their tests on these particular animals, breeds selected based on criteria which serves to match up which animal will indicate the most likely impact the drug will have on human beings). In a trial where they injected 12 Rhesus Monkeys with Depro, almost all of the monkeys developed tumors, something never seen before in Rhesus Monkeys. Not surprisingly, today many woman are developing cysts (endometriosis), fibromygelia, and turmors in their liver. My masters work was in Psychological Research and I can share a few thin ... |
