I have been on Depo for the best part of 12 years and have had no problems whatsoever. I came off it in 1999 to have another baby. No problems there either, my son is nearly 8.

Hello,
I was on the depo injection for 4 1/2 yrs.
Last shot in Feb 2007.
First sign of periods in Oct 2007 (9mnths) which was only light brown discharge which lasted 2 - 3 days and a few times a month.
Normal period started 6th Jan 2008 (still going now).
I want to have a baby and I have read you dont need to ovulate to have a period and have also read that some women that were on this depo provera injection, got their normal period back but still didn't ovulate/conceive for a nother 6 - 12 months afterwaqrds.
What is the likely hood that this will happen.
I am underweight for my age and I am 26 years old. Had no problems conceiving my 2 other children who are now 8 and 5. I was 17 & 20 when conceived them.
Has anyone else had the same problem with conceiving a baby after coming off the Depo Provera Injection?

I have been on Depo for nearly 2 years and have never felt right since getting it. I have never suffered from depression before but I feel that this drug has caused me to suffer anxiety, moodieness and lack of self worth. As a result, I am due to go for my next jab tomorrow so I am going back on the pill. Its not for every woman but it was great not getting a period! But I'd rather have a period than continue to feel this way.

Hi guys, my mum wason the Depo Provera for about 7 years. She always said that she had no side effects and that she was fine.
A good 7 years later she decided she wanted to come off it, as she wanted to become 'a woman' again. She wanted her normal period cycle back.
After three months of being off it, she got a period that lasted 6 months.
About two years of having stopped it she became pregnant. As soon as she found out she was pregnant she lost it. A few months after she lost it, I had to take her to the hospital because she was bleeding a hell of alot. She filled 3 bed time pads with in an hour.
This was all because of the Depo Provera.
At first they thought it was because her partner wasnt fertile enough but now she has a new partner and she is still un able to get pregnant.
When I went in to get contreception my doc wouldnot let me have the needle what so ever as she told me I may never be able to have children.
Believe me, you may think Implanon and Depo are quick and easy but they ruin the things that make you female. Stay on the pill, you know your safe with that

I've been on Depo Provera since November 18, 2007.
So far, I've experienced the moodiness and complete loss of libido.
My boyfriend and I used to do it daily; now it's closer to once every two-three weeks.
My scalp is all tingly and weird; but I can't tell if I'm losing hair or not.
My legs are all crampy, and my joints hurt.

I don't think I'll be getting a second shot. People are right - it's basically just poison they're injecting you with.

OH. Also, very important note: I got the shot on the 5th (and second-last day of my period), and have had absolutely no sign of a period yet.

this is going to sound kind've gross, but has anyone else noticed a foul smell along with the constant bleeding you experienced while on the shot? I've had numerous bouts of bacterial infections (which the doctor doesn't know why), so I'm wondering if anyone else experienced it, or it is another infamous bacterial infection.

Do you know anyone else who has become pregnent on depo? the website says that there are no known problems with pregnancy and depo. I think I might be pregnant and have beeen on depo for a year now. I started on depo becoz I am 23 with 3 children under 5 (and married) But the pill makes me vomit every time I take it, condoms break and get forgotten occasionally and the implanon made me bleed for 6 months straight!

I went on depo and i didnt have a problem really. My doctor warned me about spotting and the bone density issues..and the risk of depression, which i already have. I experienced 3 lbs weight gain and i only spotted the first 4 days, which my doctor explained to me. Its nothing surprising, i already knew the side effects. Dont take ANYTHING until you read up on it. and if your doctor says " No side effects" there is always something that can go wrong. Hair loss..never experinced it

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I had been on depo for 2 years and loved it. Then someone suggested I should consider changing becuase I had been on it so long and it had a high risk of bone loss. I had researched it before deciding to go on it and this had not come up as a serious issue. I was concerned and had a Dexa-Scan and sure enough at 26 I had osteoperosis.

My doctors ran other tests and determined that there wasn't any other hormonal or malabsorption issue. My calcium and vitamin D levels are normal.

The scary thing is, I'm getting married and want to have kids in a couple years. The osteoperosis medications have never been tested on women my age and some of them stay in your system and do not leave. As a result there may be a concern regarding the effects of carrying a child. When I first learned about it I was put on one of the medications but was only on it for a few months.

I'm going to be retested to see if I regain any of the bone loss on my own before starting any kind of therapy since the consequences to someone in my situation are so unclear. I've read articles online that suggest that the bone denisty comes back so my fingers are crossed.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I started taking Depo when I was 17. My Mother had taken it previously when she lived overseas, and recommended it to me. If memory serves me right it was 1993 or 1994. I was about a size 5 or 6 at the time....very healthy full of energy etc....I only ever received 3 injections, and to tell the truth I didn't want to receive the last 2, but the Dr. convinced me that my symptoms would mellow out and everything would regulate itself...Well I must say it was the best birth control I ever took, considering I almost hit 200 pounds, was a moody B**** and had my period for almost a year..everyday.everyday.e veryday...so birth control was the least of my problems when a turned into a Nasty Bleeding Pig....I have always known ( in my Head ) that Depo has left me with problems...I did get pregnant about a year after I stopped taking the Depo, but at about 10 weeks, I started bleeding, and the Dr.'s recommended to terminate. I have never used birth control since, I lived with my Boyfriend for many years, we tryed to get pregnant but I was never able.
I also ended up with lumps in my breats, immune problems, cysts, loss of some hair, lines on my nails, and stretch marks on my inner theighs, backside and breasts...lots of back problems, irregular heart beat, and insomnia..and extreme thirst which has never gone away...I'm 32 now...and I believe one of the biggest mistakes I ever made was taking 3 needles of that stuff...My eating habits didn't change ,my weight ballooned...it took me years to take the weight off...and I still struggle today to keep my weight regular...I'm constantly tested for diabetes, anemia, and other immune disease...I take Armour Thyroid now for my Hypothyroidism ( great, just what I didn't need at a young age )and I doubt I'll ever fully recover from its effects.
I took my best friend Jackie with me to get that first injection. She decided to also have one. One being the key , she never had another...but we still discuss our myterious medical problems

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
Alright, here's my horror story. I'm getting married in May of 2008 so I decided to avoid possibly becoming pregnant before our wedding I went to the doctors to discuss my options.

The shot was "supposed" to be just perfect!!!

Well since July 10, 2008 I have been on my period ever since. More than 6 months of heavy bleeding and it does not look like it's going to stop anytime soon.

When I was first injected on July 10 I had severe chronic fatigue. I slept for 14 days straight for more than 21 hours a day. I couldn't get out of bed. For about 2 months afterwards I was really tired but I was able to get up and at least go to work. I had to take 2 weeks off because I was tired. Doesn't that sound ridiculous!!!!

Other symptoms include

1) Chronic depression, had to get antidepressants
2) Severe mood swings & hot flashes
2) Loss of sexual interest completely
3) Loss of lubrication

And all my doctor says "it's not from the shot"

So after several blood test I fainted because I was so weak. This has been absolute HELL!!!

I'm worried if I screwed up my body forever!!

Hi
I am responding to your post re hip fracture. I was on depo for 2 years and thought it was wonderful until I had a motorbike accident and broke my wrist. All good and well you say however the ortho specialist was shocked at how my wrist had shattered and suggested a bone scan. The results were of a woman 20 years older who has been through menopause. The consequences for me are that if I have a fall now something will break. I have made some huge life changes to increase my bone density however am greatly concerned about going through menopause.
I am interested to know if you are trying to increase your bone density and if so what are you doing? Any ideas would be appreciated

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
The first time I received the depo shot was in January 1995. I never missed an appointment for my injection. By July of that year, I began to feel sick and my breast were very tender. At the time I was working at the HMO provider, Kaiser Permanente. I had one of the Internal Medicine doctors conduct a complete physical on me. All the tests came back fine. Then one of the nurses suggested that I get a blood pregnancy test. I laughed at the thought of it and told him that I was on depo. After another week of still feeling ill, I decided to rule out pregnancy and take the test. When the results came back, the nurse called me to his computer at the nurse's station. I read the results in shock. According to the blood HCG, I was indeed pregnant.

Before this, I had given birth to a daughter. It was a wonderful pregnancy, except for the ptyalism that occurred from six weeks to my fifth month. Nonetheless, I knew what it felt like to be pregnant and something did not seem right with my current pregnancy. As time progressed, I felt less and less pregnant. I went to see my OB/GYN and asked him to confirm my suspicions. It was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving 1995. At my request, he conducted another blood serum test. I called for the results the next day and was told that I should try not to worry and enjoy the holiday with my family and he would call me with the results that following week. I immediately panicked and demanded to know the results, although my soul already knew. He told me that my blood levels had dropped to that of a woman a few weeks pregnant. Mind you, I was approaching my second trimester.

I cried and cried and instinctively felt that the depo in my system was to blame. That following Monday, I began to hemorrhage. I was rushed to the emergency room and was met by an OB who was obnoxious to say the least. He complained about seeing over twenty patients that day and that my bleeding was nothing unusual. I explained that the bleeding, accompanied by ...

I recently had the shot in the beginning of November. I haven't had some of the more severe side effects, but I have experienced a couple. I have gained a couple of pounds and have crazy mood swings. I have also had a bad nightmare every night since I have received the shot. I don't know if they are attributed to the shot, but it seems strange that they started right after I was injected.

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones. . .I've been on the Depo Shot for eight months. I get mood swings, sure, but usually only for a week right after the shot. I assume that's because, you know, I'm getting THREE MONTHS worth of horomones shot into my body. lol. Who knows. I do get depressed, but it runs in my family. In fact, I'm the only person in my family not on anti-depressants.
Another plus, for me, is that I've actually lost almost ten pounds since I've been on it. Don't get too excited, though. My doc told me I'm "lucky" because maybe 1/5 of the people who take it actually lose weight. Most people gain.
On the note of back and joint pain. . .Well, I've had bad knees since way before taking the depo so the pain there can't be blamed on the shot. Also, my back aches are usually because I'm sitting hunched over my keyboard looking at this freaking computer screen ;).
I'm not writing to tell you the Depo Shot is good. I'm not writing to say it's bad. I just wanted to put a post up that lets people know not everyone goes through the same thing while taking this type of birth control. The same can be said for almost any drug someone takes- whether prescribed, OTC, or illicit.

Re:Depo Provera Horror stories Reply to this message
I had one Depo shot in 1999-it is almost 2008-I have had severe depression every single month for nearly 10 years because of Depo. It caused my endometriosis in which I had to have a 7 hour operation to correct and I bled for a year and a half right after the shot. I have never been the same. My doc-if you can call him that-said it would help my cramps. I have a strong family history of depression. Don't take birth control!!!!! It is poison that the drug companies push. Try herbs and diet to regulate your system and condoms for birth control. Depo destroyed my life for almost a decade. I too lost patches of hair and am still trying to get one area to grow more. I also developed cystic acne that is finally gone-but the scars aren't. I wish I could take my old doctor to court.
