| I began Depo in May 2008...I did my 3rd shot this past October. I regret doing depo and getting the 3rd shot bc I knew something wrong was going on with my body, but I did the 3rd dose anyways. Since I've been on it, I've been overly moody/ emotional and possibly depressed. I hate it and I feel like it affects not only me, but my relationship with my bf. He doesn't seem to mind..He rather see me moody than not pregnant. It's my body though that its effecting so the decision is on me to stop it. I've had on and off spotting that was light to heavy. I havent had any weight gain, hair loss, or any other side effects. I want this stuff out of my body ASAP. I've read that it can take be 6 months to a year before the horomone is completely out of your system and the periods return to normal. Is this really true??? I had a normal period before n just went on it strictly for bc method. I am also scared of becoming infertile in the future. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to rid the stuff out of the body sooner???? |

So what I wanted to add. When depo was first around in the 60s it was predominantly used as population control in 3rd world countries & in the UK on teen & adult mentally disabled girls & women. The idea was that it was a simple method for creating permanent sterility after a series of injections.
My point is, its always been known, for over 40 years, that sterility is a massive side effect.
I first heard about it when I lived in the UK in the 80s. A woman who had worked in disability services for decades had told me all about its uses & purposes in her industry. I thought it sounded perfect for me. My periods were happening every 3 to 6 months & were hospitalising me each time. I just wanted them gone for good. At that time I was late teens early 20s & as I wasnt mentally disabled, the UK doctors refused to prescribe it to me.
When I came back to Aust in the early 90s I immediately started asking doctors about it. But it was still a couple of years before I found one who would prescribe it & I had to sit a psych test first to prove beyond doubt to them that I did not want children. There was still the mentality of 'you are in your early 20s, you cant possibly know' that I had to fight.
Yes it disturbs me that women get incorrect info from medicos. I certainly dont take everything my doctor says as gospel. Hell mine misdiagnosed me so many times last year I almost died from blood poisoning. They are not perfect. We are lucky that these days we have the benefit of the internet to make our own research on everything.
I would never doubt that women are having these side effects, & I would never belittle the effects they are having on them. When the injection works, it works brilliantly. And it does so for me so I added my experiences here. But as with all medications and birth control methods, its different with every women. What worked on my friends didnt work on me. What works on me may not work on them. |

No disrespect taken Jackie. The whole point of an open forum is to share stories.
When I first got a computer in the mid 90s one of the first things I started googling (well back then it was alta vista -ing) was depo. For so long I was basically one of only 2 people I knew who was on depo and planning to stay on it long term. So yes I was on it pre-internet. To be able to find forums later and discuss it with other women was great.
At that time I found many many forums filled with women who loved depo and where like me - planning for long term use. I only found a couple of forums about major side effect issues and every single person in the dissatisifed group fell into the "given between pregnancies" and "given as a teen" category.
The rest of us were extremely shocked as we all stated to each other that from the paperwork we were given prior to getting the injections you would never prescribe it to either category. We all agreed our paperwork confirmed sterility as a pretty major side effect - and in our cases it was the side effect we personally were looking forward to.
So 13 or 14 years later I am still shocked to hear its being prescribed to women (and girls) in those categories. And over the years when friends and co workers have asked me about the injection I have specifically only recommended it if they do not plan to have children in the future and on 2 occasions I have talked women out of getting it prescribed for their teens who they felt it would help their promiscuity - I reminded them it didnt actually cure STDs !
The reason I mentioned people not fully informing themselves is because I have been quite shocked at the amount of women over the years who have admitted they never read any literature prior to having the injection, nor had they ever read the huge sheet of paper that is actually inside the injection box. It contains a patient info sheet and a practitioner info sheet.
Sorry out of room ! will add more later. |

| Also I think it is really hard to trust these doctors with advice, When I asked about the needle I was told there nothing wrong with it. When I went to another doctor to ask (after the panic attack incident) she said there was nothing wrong with the contraceptive and i asked her about the heart palpatations she said no that shouldnt happen it is probably just you being anxious and worried and causing yourself to have a panic attack (for 5 hours??) so i asked her if she had read the information on the product and if she could show me, when she did it clearly said on it that it may cause heart palpatations etc etc... hmm..interesting. I had another doctor argue with me that the implant was not what was causing me to feel strange and moody and i had to demand he remove it from my arm which automatically made me feel better (it may have been too strong for me) so i really wonder about these doctors and theyre advice about contraception... |

I got on depo about 4 yrs ago and it worked great the first time, i didnt get my periods for over a yr, i didnt get pregnant, i didnt put on any weight it all seemed fine i got the needle twice. I got off it and went back on it a year later I don't know if there is different brands or what happened but as soon as I got the needle 5 minutes later my heart was beating fast i couldnt breathe properly
i felt like i was going to have a heart attack it was very scary this went on for about 5 hours!! After that i gained abit of weight nothing extreme just abit which i lost a few months after exercising and eating right. contraceptive wise this was great and it also took away my periods and mood swings the only problem was the crazy panic attack, i got pregnant a year and half after getting off the needle and wanted to go back on it but have been scared of what side effect it could cause this time..it is scary bcos its irreversible and u cant just take it out..
2 of my friends had worser experiences, one of them had just lost alot of weight then she went on the needle and put alot of weight on and had ongoing periods, my best friend got on the needle and became bigger than i have ever seen her, she got acne and her periods became irregular.
it is hard to know how the needle will effect you and as it happened to me i realised it wont always give you the same side effects which is quite scary. It seems so hard to find a decent contraceptive that will work!!!!!!!
Why cant they make needles and implants for the men to kill the sperm before it comes out!? dont we woman have enough on our plates? lol.. |

| I am 21 and have been on depo since I was 18 with a small three month break in between years. Although my experiences have not been as bad as some...I gained over a hundred pounds in that two years without any major changes in diet or activity level. I started feeling random cramps but no bleeding occurred and have had extremely erratic periods. This past July I came to the conclusion that my weight was out of control and got a personal trainer. I weighed in at 290 pounds and plunged into the diet/exercise thing pretty hardcore. I've lost around 45 pounds, it now being November by eating less than 1400 calories a day and working out around ten hours a week. However, I was recently informed that Depo (and other forms of birth control), trick your body into thinking it's pregnant. Not only are most women unable to lose weight on depo, but most either gain or lose drastic amounts. Because the shot makes your body hoard body fat (as it thinks it's pregnant), even if you do not gain weight, most of your body's muscle ends up turning to fat. It also becomes ridiculously difficult to get rid of body fat. In losing 45 pounds, I have only lost 3 percent body fat with the average for that amount being between five and seven percent. My shot expires in December and I will not be continuing my injections. Unforunately, I have also learned that it can take up to EIGHT MONTHS for the progesterone from the shot to be cleared out of your body so my efforts of losing weight may not get any easier for almost a year. If you're thinking about going on the shot PLEASE find something else (the ring also has a huge list of horrible side effects and fatal possibilities). By the way...if anyone has advice on how to get the hormones to clear through your body more quickly, please email me at breathedeeplylivepassiona tely@yahoo.com |

I actually have issues with a few of your comments. No disrespect, but do you have anything to back up your claims that women who think Depo is brilliant are in fact the majority? May I remind you at this point that you have not stopped having the injections, thus you cannot really comment on the horrible effects people such as myself have after coming off. Like you, I thought it was great for the years that I was on it - it is only now that it's begun wreaking havoc on my body.
Second, to state that anybody not fully informed before taking Depo only have themselves to blame... what about the hundreds of stories of YOUNG (& I mean adolescent) women being given the drug, either under the influence of over protective parents or by their own choosing, at an age where their brain is still developing, in terms of making impulsive decisions and emotional responses. Is that their own fault? What about the women that began taking it pre-internet or before the wealth of information became available? I for one do NOT remember ever reading that Depo leads to sterility on any of the paperwork I saw, in fact it contradicts that (as did the GP) by stating it was merely a matter of time for fertility to return.. in fact that is still what the 'experts' say.
As for only giving it to women that didn't intend to reproduce - I was one such woman, but people & circumstances change. I have since decided that I'd like another child one day. Oops, too bad, I did not fully inform myself - must be my own fault for trusting a doctor I'd been seeing for years. My bad.
I'm glad you intend on staying on it until menopause - if I didn't want to have another child one day, or hadn't decided that I wanted to be in greater control of my body & no longer have synthetic hormones injected into me, I would have done the same & perhaps wouldn't be suffering the consequences! |

My thoughts are that if someone is disatisfied with any product - they will vocalise it.But if someone is happy with something - they very rarely speak out.
So I will add my name to the minority on this thread (but let it be known we are in fact the majority out there in the big wide world) who think that Depo Provera is brilliant.
I have been on it non stop since 1993 - yes 15 years.
Prior to requesting it from my doctor I requested the info sheets that doctors are supplied. I read it thoroughly and asked my doctor further questions. I believe I was fully informed about the product. Anyone who chooses not to fully inform themselves about potential side effects of a medical product really has no one to blame other than themselves when side effects occur.
From day one I never had a period again - bliss.
From day one I never experienced PMS again - I use to be murderous.
From day one all "monthly" food cravings ceased.
From day one no more accidental pregnancies (after 3 occured whilst on the pill I had reached the stage of using abstinence as birth control).
I had some initial weight gain over the first couple of years - about 2 dress/bra sizes. I was expecting it as it was pretty clearly explained in the brochures. But seriously - in the scheme of things a little bit of extra flesh and fat is not the worst thing that can happen in life.
Around the last 2 weeks before each injection is due I get a bit of acne.
My main beef is with doctors who prescribe Depo to women who intend to have children. My belief is that it should only be prescribed to women like me who have no intention of breeding. Even back in 1993 the paperwork stated it could cause sterility - so why anyone would prescribe it "between pregnancies" is beyond me.
So for me personally DEPO RULES. I plan to stay on it till menopause. |

| My doctor told me I couldn't use the patch anymore because I smoke, so she convinced me to go on the shot. She told me that few people experience weight gain and some bleeding... no mention of any mood changes. I am bipolar and have a panic disorder (she didn't check my chart to see this), and I got the shot 2 weeks ago. All of the sudden I was very depressed and agitated with everyone around me... I've spent the last 2 weeks laying around my house because I'm so depressed I'm exhausted. I figured I was going through a depressive episode (even though I haven't had one in 2 years). Then last night I had a mixed episode, which is a combination of both a manic episode and a depressive episode- I stayed up all night with extreme energy and racing thoughts, but was still horribly depressed. This is very rare in bipolar people my age. I talked to my psychiatrist and he told me that considering my illnesses I should have never been put on the shot. Through this board now I figured out I have 2 1/2 more months of this! I may have to drop out of school because I'm sleeping all day and my depression is so bad I can't force myself to do my school work. |

Hi Ladies,
I went to my doctor a couple of months ago because I have recently gotten into a new relationship and I needed to start a form of contraception. Over my life I have tried 7 different types of contraceptive pills and they have had massive side effects for me so I wanted a better solution that would not cause the extreme hormonal imbalances that the pill does. My Doctor told me that Depo provera has no side effects and it was an easy solution. WRONG!!
I have also been bleeding every day since I got the injection. It has also varied between light bleeding to thick gluggy black blood. Plus I too have lost my sex drive and I feel unattractive and frumpy, when I was normal before. Thridly I have much oilier hair & last but definitely not least; my brain has practically completely stopped functioning at times. Yesterday I was having lunch with friends and nothing they were saying was registering in my mind. I then went to catch the tram home, which I catch everyday, and I went to the wrong street and got on a random different tram and ended up in the middle of nowhere panicing...I NEVER DO THINGS LIKE THAT! I am one of the most organized switched on people I know.
The conclusion to my story is that I will not be getting another injection and, as much as I hate them, condoms will have to do.
I hope i go back to normal soon because I feel like I am a brain dead Zombie now. Does anybody know if there is a cancelling out drug & if not does it really have as bad of a come down as some have said when you stop taking it? |

LOL i thought that was a bit different!
It's definitely not entirely IMpossible, I personally know a girl that fell pregnant whilst ON depo.. however.. if you had a shot in August it will still be in your system until next month? Just don't get your hopes up too much, I know how much that sux to just be let down...
It's really great you haven't had any negative symptoms, & don't want to freak you out but I hadn't had any problems when I first came off either, it took 6 months before I really noticed anything, aside from the odd bad mood. |

Hey there...
You poor thing, sounds terrible. You've probably already read plenty about it but thought I'd remind you that plenty of women bleed continuously on depo, & from what I've heard it's not regular blood. I'm not qualified to comment on the different colours - if that were me I'd be heading back to the doc for peace of mind.
I would definitely encourage you to consider a different method of bc - I don't believe any oral contraceptive has these effects. Be prepared though to suffer through the crazy hormonal & sometimes scary withdrawal that many of us are suffering though. Hope that doesn't deter you from ceasing depo, you'll have to do it sooner or later & it's probably best while your young.
When I began depo my doc told me that many women bleed the whole time, & if you do it the first time there's a very good chance it will continue with each shot, it is not for everyone. I remember him also saying he was happy enough to give it to me as I'd already concieved a child, he didn't like giving it to young, childless women.
I would forget about sueing hun, but I'd definitely consider getting a new doc if you're at all concerned about her professional performance as a doc. This all should be the last of your worries at such a young age (I'm 29), I really wish you all the best. |

I got on the depo shot sometime last October (2007), and almost immediately after I had the shot I had my period every single day until the second shot which is 11 weeks after the first.
I told my gyno docter what was happening and she told me that it would go away after the next shot. So I took her word and got the second shot sometime in January I believe?
Anyways it did NOT stop, infact it got worst. I got off the shot in March, because I couldn't deal with it. I lost my sex drive, I hated all men. My blood is BLACK, not brown its BLACK and it itches like a yeast infection. I can't explain it. It's not liquid, it's almost like cottage cheese but it dries so fast. I can't wear any feminine products, it doesn't soak. I have had to deal with just toilet paper, and ruining a LOT of clothes, and i'm not exactly the richest person.
Now i'm starting to like guys again, and my hormones are going INSANE. It is now October and I have still had my period since January/Marchish. But I see some differences. I have gotten 2 days off randomly, only twice. And after those two days the blood will become almost like a flourescent red, really bright. And then the flow is so heavy and constant, I swear to god i've been constantly bleeding for about 10 months. I don't know if this relates to depo provera but I've been losing a lot of weight and becoming more light headed.
I'm 17, and I've been thinking about maybe taking a different form of birth control just to stop this period, if anyone could offer me any ideas please contact me.
I haven't had any cramps, I have been pretty depressed, I lost a lot of weight. I just want this to end. What am I going to do?
I'd just hate to have a relationship with a guy and then have to tell him you can't do anything cos you're (thing) has been bleeding for a year. Can we sue? My doctor is NOT doing her job. And this is humuliating me |

I had my last shot in Jan 08, after several years on & off. Never got a period on it at all, effectively been off 6 months & still haven't had any.
The last 2 weeks however I've had incredibly tender breasts, small amount of milky discharge, stomach cramps, intense mood swings (crying at nothing), lower back pain etc. 2 neg hpts, had blood tests last week & got results today saying I'm not pregnant (had myself convinced I was, with those symptoms!)& my prolactin levels are fine, thyroid's ok etc. Doc saw discharge first hand today & re-ordered tests to be absolutely sure - then will start on Juliet pill to regulate periods, hormones & hopefully moods! He's also ordered breast u/s as a precaution, but as both discharge comes from both breasts he doesn't think cancer is probable.
I knew that depo would bugger up my hormones, & at the time I was happy to have no periods. It's not until you come off that you realise the severity of how badly it can screw your hormones up. Not wanting to have periods or get pregnant is one thing, going through all this is something else. From what I've read previously it does not cause infertility - it's now a waiting game... which I could deal with if it weren't for the other horrible side effects.
Has anyone else experienced the discharge? Still so hard for me to believe I'm not pg (even though I haven't yet had a period) - when I was pg with my 8yr daughter was the only time my breasts have ever felt like this! I'm hoping the pill will help, has it improved side effects for anyone else? |

I too have been affected adversely by this drug! It is POISON! And yet, the drug companies dole it out because it makes them MONEY! Its always about MONEY, even if it is at the expense of our health and those who love us!
If you use MySpace, PLEASE come and share your experiences and help me to warn other women about this poison before it leads and leaves them down the same path it led and left ALL of us! I can't do it on my own, but as they say, there is power in groups!

| I was having stabbing pain in my lower right abdomen for about 3 years. I saw many doctors about it and had many tests done, and all they could come up with is that I have ovarian cysts. I met my new doctor about 7 months ago and she did a Laporoscopy and determined that I have a very bad case of endometriosis. Well about a month or 2 after my surgery I was still was having bad pains, so my doc suggested that I take a six month course of the depo lupron shot which I guess is the newer version of depo provera (w/out weight gain). After reading the side effects I instantly did not want to get it, but my relationship with my fiance was not doing 2 good because I was ALWAYS in pain. I was stupid and about a month after thinking about the shot ...I got ONE injection. That was the worst mistake I have ever made in my life!!! Now, the pain is still there, periods last 15 days...w/heavy bleeding, I have lost 15 pounds because I am so depressed ALL the time I can't even eat (now I only weigh 120 lbs), and I lost my sex drive all together! I have been w/ my fiance over 5 years and he means the world to me...I love him to death! But our relationship is suffering, I turned into a completely different person. I am so moody ALL the time and never feel like doing anything. I WILL NOT get the next shot, and if ANYONE reading this is thinking about getting it...TAKE MY WORD...DO NOT DO IT!!! My life has made a change for the worst thanks to the shot that is suppose to be so great! |
