The Raising of Children Reply to this message
The following passage has been translated from "Family Life" - a book of Mount Athos monk Elder Paisios:

God is in some way obliged to care for children. When a child is baptized* God provides an Angel to protect it, so the child is protected by God, by the Guardian Angel and by the parents.

Parents should help children spiritually, when they are little, because at that age their shortcomings are small and they can easily be cut out. It's like a fresh potato - scratch it a bit, and it peels off. If it's old though, you must get a knife to clean it and, if it has a small black spot, you must proceed even further. If children are helped from a young age and are filled with Christ, they'll be near Him for ever. Even if they stray a little when they grow up, due to age or bad company, they'll recover. Because the fear of God and the reverence, that strengthened their hearts in their young age, will never be erased.

* I'm not aware as to what sort of baptism the late Elder Paisios is referring to.
