| hi,im 13 weeks into my pregnancy and my baby has just been diagnosed with gastroschisis. my obstetrician has told me that the defect is very large and the survival rate of bub is very small. this is the second time it has happened, my little girl mary died from this condition 19 weeks into the pregnancy. i would just like to know if anyone else out there has been through this, the chance of it happening twice is about 3%. i dont know what to do anymore |

Hello. My little girl was born with this defect three years ago. She is a happy healthy cheeky little girl.
We spent 3.5weeks in NICU before she was allowed home. I also didn't need a c-section and she didn't need anaesthetic. They did what was called a primary closure, where they pushed all the intestines back in and covered the hole with the umbilical cord.
My surgeon said this to me and at the time I thought it was a bit weird, but I totally understand. Out of all the things to be wrong with your baby, this is one that he would choose. With a 90% success rate, your baby has great odds of getting through this.
I wish you all the very best with your babies. |

| lisa, there was a case like this on the new channel 10 show "saving babies". The baby had an operation right after he was born and his bowel was pushed inside his little body. I wish you all the best of luck. |

Thanks for your reply its good to hear from someone who has been through this.
I had an amnio yesterday and at 16 wks on the ultrasound you could see the bowel on the outside. It amazing how modern medicine changes, they want me to have the baby naturally and go as long as possible which scares me as i went 4 and 5 weeks early with my two boys, so now you just play the waiting game. |

| My son was born with gastroschisis 4 years ago. 4 loops of his bowel were exposed, he was born 4 weeks early so only weighed 5lb. The bowel was placed back in his abdomen, but within 24 hours had to be removed as his kidney's were not functioning properly. They placed the bowel in a bag and stitched this to his skin, it was suspended above him and over the next 5 days gravity and clamps were used to slowly feed the bowel into his abdomen. He then came off the ventilator and began small feeds until he was released from hospital at 4 weeks taking 50ml feeds. There have been no further effects of the gastroschisis, he has a large scar on his tummy but that is all. With modern medicine these days I don't think this is a huge problem for surgeons to treat. You just need to stay confident knowing that this condition can be treated and is usually very successful. |
