My old dog is now deaf too, doesn't hear a thing. I have a huge bell I ring to get her attention...Ive had to check her many times in her sleep too, to make sure shes still alive! Beautiful and calm personality but, wouldn't hurt a fly! :)

I also own a deaf red cattle now just on two years old. I adopted her from the RSPCA when she was just 7 weeks old.

I did know that she was deaf - that is the whole reason for getting her. She is the first deaf dog I have owned and I would do it again in a heart beat. I have three others (just with selective hearing). She has learned sign language and fitted in from day one with the family and other animals. I am looking to adopt another deaf pup if one comes available. I have seen on different sites older dogs which have come available but unfortunately I need to be a little cautious as I also run a farm and prefer for a pup so that they can be integrated with the livestock and poultry, etc we have.

I find also that she does not like the lawn mower - being a cattle dog, unsure whether she can feel the vibration of it through the ground or whether just being a cattle dog just loves to bite tires anyway. She also watches and learns from the other dogs in their reactions and watching them bark as well.

Good luck to all of those who own deaf dogs - it is a priveledge - not a chore.

Thank you for starting this thread.

I have a deaf Australian Shepherd mix (about two years old). I adopted Karley from a rescue organization, and have been puzzled by her attacks on the vacuum, lawnmower, snow shovel and broom. If I even begin to use any of these tools, she goes crazy, barking and attacking them. It is impossible to use any of them around her. I was searching for an answer to this strange behavior when I found your thread.

If you have discovered any answers in your search, I would love to hear them. I also hope that Cookee is doing well now and fully recovered. She sounds like a great dog, as is mine!

Been a couple of weeks since I posted in this thread.

"Cookee" hasn't been to obedience classes since her "graduation". We had one night off due to heavy rain and then last week we found a huge lump on her hind.

The lump was about the size of your palm and around 0.5cm thick. It just appeared on Saturday. On Sunday, when it appeared to be getting thicker, we took her to a 7-day vet. He suggested that "Cookee" may have bumped herself and that it was a bleed. He gave us some pills and sent us home, telling us to keep an eye on it. Over the next few days, nothing seemed to change. It wasn't bothering her at all, but wasn't going away.

On Wednesday arvo, an infected sore opened up in the middle of it. We got her to her normal vet first thing Thursday morning. She thought it might be a spider bite. Cookee was given antibiotics and we had to wash it with Betadine a couple of times a day. She was also made to wear an Elizabethan collar to stop her licking it.

On Tuesday of this week, we took her back for a check up. The sore was healing and the swelling going down. She no longer tries to lick it, so it must've stopped annoying her. We still got a couple of days of pills to go, but it looks like she's going to be fine. I tell you, it's been a stressful time.

I've resumed simple training with her and she's fallen straight back into her old self. Looking forward to class next Monday!

"Cookee" is going from strength to strength. Last night, she graduated to Class 3!! She's hasn't even been in Class 2 for the whole month! I was in shock when we were selected to elevate to the next class and couldn't get the smile off my face. I'm still in shock and still smiling.

I don't know if it's coincidence, or not, but a couple of weeks ago I changed the treat I was giving her. Instead of a flat stick-type treat (that you break up), I've been using a pellet-type liver treat. Her improvement since then has been nothing short of amazing. I don't know if she really, really, really loves the new treat or if she's just starting to understand what it's all about.

She's now doing recalls from up to 20m. For those who don't know, a recall is when you get your dog to stay (from either a sit, drop or stand), remove their lead, walk away, turn around, pause, then call your dog. They're supposed to come straight to you and sit directly in front of you. In the last few days, I've increased the distance from no more than 10m up to 20m. She's doing everything perfectly 90% of the time.

Another test that was given to us, last night, was to tuck our end of the lead into our pants and then do a series of exercises without using our hands on the lead. While "Cookee" didn't stay right beside me the whole time, she stayed "with" me.

I'm told that Class 3 is pretty much the same as Class 2, but the times for sit/drop/stand and the distances for recalls are longer. Looks like we've got some homework to do!

Will keep you posted!

Sharks... - My wife and I are practical people. We knew what we wanted in a dog and only sought out dogs that fit that. As you said, you just want to take every dog home when you go to a shelter, but that's just not practical. Too many people take the "wrong" dog home and it ends up back at the shelter very quickly.

That being said, the only real prerequisite we had was that we wanted something medium-sized. We didn't want a Foxie, nor did we want a Labrador, if you know what I mean. We had thought of getting a Dalmation, but decided they were bigger than we really wanted.

When I first saw "Cookee", she fit the bill in every way; She is petite for a Cattle dog and, with her white coat and black spots, kinda looks like a Dally! She was also very docile. She wasn't barking her head off like most of the other dogs there. She's since come out of her shell and found her voice (she's the loudest deaf dog you've ever heard!), but only uses it when she's playing with us.

She can go from being a very docile "lap dog" to sprinting around her yard at the drop of a hat. Sometimes, she'll run and run, all on her own, playing her own game. She's a joy to watch and I'm grateful every day that we picked each other.

<Mmmmmmm, should you actually be owning an animal. They do grow up. Which RSPCA you gonna dump it at?>

I think when you go looking for a dog you have a particular dog in mind. When I went to the animal shelter to adopt a new dog, I had in mind a young dog (not a puppy) medium size, docile. When I got to the pound, I wanted to take them ALL home, what a depressing place ! BUt, when I came across Bart in the very last 'cell' I knew he was mine. He was a 3 month old lab X bull mastiff and at the time I didnt realise how big he would be (70kg)! Nor did I know two weeks later he would almost die of parvovirus nor did I know that several years later we would spend more than $6k on fixing his congenial defect leg. If I had known all of thisbefore I adopted him it wouldnt have made any difference because I fell in love with Bart the moment we met and it has all been worth it. That is my point... our dogs give us unconditional love, and we reciprocate that.

I kind of went off, hey? It really struck a nerve, that's all. I understand that some people don't read the whole thread but, as I see it, if you're going to criticise someone, you should first take the time to read things through so you have a full understanding.
------------------------- ------------------

I knew it was only going to be a matter of time before someone online makes a comment and upsets the owner of much loved pet. Try not to take it to heart and I wish you and Cookee all the best. Love this new Board but not a lot happening just yet. Hope to read more of the progress reports on Cookee in the future..

"Cookee" had an up and down night at obedience on Monday. She went mental and barked her head off for the first five minutes of her new class. I thought, "OMG, she doesn't belong in Class 2!!" I took her away from the class for a few minutes and got her mind in the game, then rejoined the group and she went great guns.

Towards the end of the lesson, she did her first off-leash recall and did everything perfectly. In fact, she was one of maybe five dogs (out of a class of ten) that did it properly. I was soooooo proud of her. After we finished, the instructor informed the class that "Cookee" was deaf and that BOTH of us were doing a very good job. Big smiles and lots of cuddles were had; with "Cookee", not the trainer. ; )

Thanks for your post. I feel much better now.

cookee I think it was an honest mistake on kanes part.

Alot of people on these boards skim through long posts and react to a certain part of it. Seen the political thread lately lol.

Anyway how is your doggy going?

"Mmmmmmm, should you actually be owning an animal. They do grow up. Which RSPCA you gonna dump it at?"
------------------------- ------------------------- ---------

Wow, I'm sorry for being honest. The truth is, no, I didn't want a deaf dog. They are harder to train and harder to look after. However, once we picked her, that was that. I would never even consider dumping her like her previous owner did and I resent you suggesting such.

Just how much of the thread have you bothered to read???

Did you read about me taking her to dog obedience?

Did you read about her just graduating to Class 2 (meaning she'd progressed from beginners - Class 1 - Class 2)?

Did you read about me wanting to help her overcome her fear of the lawn mower?

Perhaps I should have also mentioned that my wife and I have spent near on $1k on fencing her 1/2 acre yard? Should I have mentioned that I spent a week building her a kennel? Should I have mentioned that she gets walked EVERY day, regardless of the weather or how I feel? Should I have mentioned that, after she's eaten her dinner, I put her coat on her to keep her warm through the night? Should I have mentioned that, when my wife and I go to bed, I tuck "Cookee" into her kennel, put her blanket over her and say, "Goodnight, sweetheart, see you tomorrow."???

How dare you suggest I shouldn't be a pet owner and that I'm going to dump her!!

Do me a favour and just p*ss off from this thread, okay? If you're not hear to talk constructively about deaf dogs, instead of attempting to belittle a responsible pet owner, you're not welcome here.

Re:Deaf Dog - Anyone got one? Reply to this message
I once saw a Dr.Harry episode where a dog was biting a lawn mower. They sprayed citronella on the mower to put the dog off. I don't really want to do that as I want her to "like" the mower, not be afraid to go near it because it stinks.

One of the trainers at dog obediance has taken her deaf dog right through to Masters. I'll talk to her about it tonight.

I assume you're talking about the ride-on? We've tried doing the gently-gently thing, but with no success. I can actually put her on my lap on it and she'll sit there, but she "refuses" to enjoy it and will attack it again as soon as I let her down.

I had hoped to teach her to ride on my motorbike but, after the way she attacks the mower, I'm not letting her near my custom-painted bike!

As she gets more trained, I think I'll be able to bring her around, but for now, it seems like a lost cause.

Deaf Dog - Anyone got one? Reply to this message
Our little Cattle X is deaf. She's about 17 months old. We got her from a shelter on the Sunshine Coast last December. We weren't too sure she was deaf until we got her home. I drove up behind her while on the ride-on and she never flinched. Kinda confirmed it. Unfortunately, when she turned around and saw it, she got such a fright she now hates it. She attacks it at every opportunity.

We go to obedience lessons every week and she's just graduated to Class 2! She will sit, drop, stand, stay and come, all on hand signals. While it's frustrating not being able to give her voice commands, having a deaf dog does have advantages;

* She doesn't hear the neighbour's dogs barking.
* She doesn't get disturbed by hot air ballons that often fly over.
* Thunderstorms don't bother her at all.
* She sleeps sooooooo deeply that I sometimes have to check she's still alive!

If we'd known she was deaf, we might not have picked her, which makes me glad we didn't know for sure. She's such a beautiful dog, has an amazing personality and never ceases to make us smile and laugh.
