Hi. Just read your msg. Treat toy...what a wonderfull idea. I have a dog with anxiety issues and barks when I am out (see post 'collar vs sedation). Although 8 he is still playfull (ball mad) so just....maybe...the toy would be something to occupy the mind with a reward. Soft toys and other chew toys haven't worked. Even tried old tracky daks of mine to help him fell 'less anxious' if he could sit/lay on my 'scent'

How old is she? My dog barks at anything he has never seen before until I take him up to it and introduce him. There's been the soccer ball, balloon, garden pot, in fact every new item when he was younger.

When walking carry a powerful water pistol filled with citronella oil /water mix. Have small reward treat handy also.
When walking and the barking starts shoot at dog and say 'no Barking' in a soft voice and after every 6 corrections stop and praise the "no Barking and give a treat. after a week you use just water and command. When dog starts walks with out barking remember to praise and give hug and treat.. They will do anything for the love given to them... Both my dogs were shocking barkers and now they walk and no barking....the enjoyment.

I understand your concern my beautiful maremma also barks and really loudly. We have moved her from 75 acres to 5 acres and she is driving the neighbours crazy. We have even had threats. I try to keep her inside and I have tried the citronella colar and the battery operated colars but she still goes on and on. It is awful to see like your doggy such a beautiful animal have such a problem.

Try a kong or treat ball. With a treat/treats that your dog really likes. Use a small hole that they will really have to work hard to get the food out of.

Otherwise you can try a citronella collar. They hate the smell and it is a gentle negative type of reinforcement of the behaviour you do not want her doing.
It won't hurt her. But every time she barks the collar squirts a small spray of citronella into the air and the dog shuts up. If she is smart she will put two and two together and stop barking.
She doesn't need it when you are at home as you can reinforce the no bark rule yourself and she won't tie the collar with you. Good luck.

My beautiful rescue dog never stops barking when we're out. She barks randomly, at people, other dogs, trees, traffic... she's not aggressive and is really affectionate, but the persistent barking makes people think she's a devil dog. How can I get her to stop? I take her for a long walk every day and I don't want to have to restrict our walks to unpopulated areas because of her nonstop woofing!
