Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Hi Sharon

I'm in Sydney. Good luck with your decision, my Dr doesn't do the biliopancreatic diversion, but prefers the sleeve these days. I'm really looking forward to my next journey now.

Mel,

I'm struggling to not put the kgs back on. Luckily have only gone up a couple in the 10 weeks since my band was removed. Its through hard work with training and the early stages of a new romance!!!!! (It doesn't help having an endless supply of Tim Tams at work though.) Hope you enjoyed your evening out tonight - I'm soooo jealous!!!!

Cheers
Gail

Gail... how are you managing not to put weight back on... you are a champ. I have put on two kilos since having o.1ml out of my darned band.

I am thinking opti for the 2nd half of this week and next week to get the darned things to go away before my hubbies 50th. So much for the 15 I was going to loose... the gym and fill didn't work, I have put it on... far out!!!!!!

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
HI Gail

I tried to get Bees blog but wouldnt work. Tried taking out any gaps too?

I am thinking more and more sleeve although I have been offered a biliopancreatic diversion but I think the side effects are too great and it is a big surgery with quite a long recovery time included.

I have to see the drs (who might do the sleeve) team - dietitician, exercise physiologist and physician first to be assessed and try and see why the band hasnt worked very well. The dr said if he did the band he would remove it and wait a month and then do the sleeve surgery.

I had very little restriction a while ago and didnt put on much weight and now have a reasonable restriction but might be better with a bit less as I find it hard to eat much healthy foods as they get stuck easily and of course the c r a p foods go down way too easily.

Good luck for February for your surgery. Where in Australia are you?

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Hi Sharon

I'm alson going from band to sleeve. Band was removed in September due to a slip and am getting sleeved in February.
Looking forward to having restricted eating again, as without the band in now I feel like I'm munching on food all the time. Luckily have put all the kgs back on as yet.

Bee's blog is very inspirational reading, she has done so well.

Cheers

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
They mainly do bands, most places in Victoria do, they do sleeves for people who have had issues with bands. I would seriously make an appt with them, just cos you cant get it done till next year, doesnt mean you cant find anything out. The best thing to do, is see them and see what they say. Plus being Xmas your better making an appt now, even if its in the new yr. Your better off finding out ur options now, instead of spending months wondering lol. Its up to you...Lte me know how you go!

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Bee,

I was looking at your blog and seen you had a link on the right hand side for your surgeons web site,so i had a look, but no info on there about them doing the sleeve??

I am interested in making an appointment with them, but my issue is, i have to wait till the new year before i can have an OP.
My health insurance has a excess, and u pay it once in a calendar year,so having the band removed and having the sleeve will need to be done in the same year in order for me not to pay it twice.
So yeah maybe i should wait till next year before going to see them about it all.
Also i need to know, somehow, will they even treat me?
alot of DR's are funny about treating other DR's patients.

should i call them or not...lol???? i really don't know how to go about it all.

cheers Lauren.

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Hey Lauren,

I dont actually know because I didnt have to pay, but Im pretty sure they charge around the same as the band. I would highly recomend my surgeon, he has been so fantastic. I can give you his details if you'd like, it might be worth seeing him just to find out. They are very proffesional, and honestly, after going to Nottle first, I was amazed at how fantastic this place is, plus you dont have massive waits in the waiting room like with Nottle. Their dietician is fantastic as well, and worked with sleeved and bypass patients in the UK. They have 3 surgeons all together, and all work together, one of the other surgeons would be your assisting. The nurse their is great to! They operate out of two hospitals, the dandenong valley, and knox. Ive been to both and Knox is better lol

Anyway let me know if you need any info!

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Lauren it depends upon which surgeon and which state you are in. The out of pocket expense is about the same as that for the band. Here in Perth depeding upon the surgeon you can have as little as ZERO gap, yeap nothing to pay after private health insurance, upto one surgeon who charges about $6,000 most tho are around $2,00 - 3,000 gap here in Perth. Price is no guide tho as the least expensive as in no gap is one of the niceses and most esperenced surgeons there is he just belives it is life saving surgery and thus refuses to chrage a gap to save lives. Pretty kewl hey.
One thing to keep in mind is that most require you to see a dietician and either a physcio or phycoligist at least once each you can get what is called a care plan from your GP that will cover most of the cost for these rather than the few hundred dollars you would have been out of pocket for those. I know most people like to say money doesnt count, but the reality is it does for a lot of us out there. So if you can find a good surgeon who treats you well and you can save thousands I say go for it. I have been on the boards over a year now and to be honest the most praise I hear heaped on any of the Perth surgeons all have the cheapest price and none of the praise was how cheap they where but how professional how caring and how skilled they where :)

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Yes, it isnt really fair. Our surgeons offer alternatives to all their patients, if the band fails...If I dont like the sleeve, or if it didnt work in some way, my surgeon will do a bypass (I wouldnt like to get that done though) and I still wouldn't have to pay for it. All I pay for is my hospital excess...he covers everything, even the anethestiest...I've heard quiet a few negative things about Mr Nottle...I'm so sorry your stuck in this position

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Bee,

Yes exactly,it makes me furious that i have to pay,not him! I brought the subject up with him and all he said was "its just one of those things" and "i never said it was 100%"
like 12 thousand dollars is nothing to sneeze about!!! LOL

the more i think about his attitude and REALLY complete disrespect, i feel that i've been delt, the more i'm thinking about seeing another DR.

I told him i paid for the op with my husbands super, you think he would be a little more respectful that i took a pretty BIG risk (money wise) for him to just say "sorry"

Lauren.

P.S Mel i will be looking at the sleeve.

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Hey Lauren,

Maybe you could get an appt with a surgeon closer, before you make any decsions...that way you will know if another surgeon will do it and if not, you can use nottle. That sux that you have to pay for it, I'd look for someone else if you have to pay just because it is along way from here.

Hey Bee,

First of all congratulations on the baby...lol

I am now wondering would it be better for me to switch DR's??

as i am going to be paying to have the sleeve done, maybe its worth switching to one a bit closer to home, but the question is would another DR want to operate on one of nottles patients lol??? doctors can be a bit funny like that!

anyhow a bit to consider i suppose...i need to find the cash firstly too to pay for the thing to be done LOL

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Hey Lauren,

I dont know if the wait would be as long if it was private. I only had to wait 2 weeks to get my band removed, and 2 month until I could get the sleeve to let the swelling out. But my surgeon does private only, where as nottle does both, so I would imagine he is busier...

Goodluck with it all!

Re:from Band to Sleeve Reply to this message
Well just came back from seeing my surgeon! (only took me the whole entire day, just about!!!! lol)

He said he will remove the band and in a few mths afterwards will look into another form of surgery,he didn't tell me about the sleeve,he said the two other bypass surgery's,i had to ask him about the sleeve LOL
He then said its very risky and is a high chance of leakage and bla bla bla all the literature u find about the procedure doesn't inform you of the high risk of leakage where the staples are....lol
i am just relieved its all over with....he put me on the public waiting list to have the band removed,he said it would be about 3 mths wait (pretty much the same if u went thru him privately anyhow I GUESS..??)
he also said to have the sleeve done it would be another 6 mth wait roughly...maybe 8

i don't think i am patient enough to wait to have it done that way....so it looks like for me another op to fork out for!!!! i have private cover but u still pay a gap don't you??? i know with the band u do....it was about $3000 roughly if i remember correctly.

anyhow i am so relieved it's over with and away my new journey begins...lol

i think i might have to try and stick to the opti for a while so i don't gain anymore weight before hand! :) fingers crossed anyhow...
