Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
I have been on Opti since Monday (4th day). Yesterday i was ready to give up i had no energy and a massive headache. I actually drove into the bottleshop to grab a couple of cans to give me some energy.......However i did not stop i drove around the back and went home....

The first thing my wife said to me this morning was "your breath is stinky"!! I thought that this must be Ketosis!!! I have a slight hedache but a glass of water and a panadine and i feel 1000% percent better this morning and have heaps if energy!!! Glad a resisted and old excuse and pushed myself through.. Had i not been reading these forums i would have probally broken yesterday... So thank you guys!!

Is it unusual to get headaches 10 days into using Opti?
I have minor headaches for 2 days now and its annoying. Mind you I have worked 5 night shifts in a row and very tired too. However I rarely get headaches

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Cindy,

Optifast can be brought from most chemists or online at chemist sites but shop around because the price varies significantly.

Most people will get a headache and feel pretty ordinary for some time during the first few days while the body goes through detox, but it is usually over pretty quickly.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Before altering you pre op diet please consult your surgeon or one of his team. They are the only ones who can tell you if they will allow you to substitute any products.

There is no point trying to stick to any diet if you get to surgery and find out your surgeon won't operate because you haven't followed his instructions. and YES it has happened!

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
hi joedygray, I have been using both optifast and optislim for a week and 2 days and have lost 5.3 kg. i think optifast is the suggested product due to shrinking your liver but i find it easier with more variety and it seems that the ingredients are nearly the same. my op is 11th august.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
I'm two and a half weeks out from surgery and trying to stick to this stage. Do you think it makes any difference whether you use Optifast or other similar products, I've reviewed the nutrional content on both and my other protein powder (left over from previous dieting) is almost exactly the same. Would optifast make any difference? I am having a lot of trouble sticking to this and find that I have been eating things I shouldn't every second day or so? any feedback appreciated.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Years ago before I had the lap band put in I was on the Ultra fast Optifast diet..ffor 12 weeks. It cost a lot of money. I went in every week to be weighted and I lost a lot of weight but when I went on the solids again I gained it all back.
I use to put water or skim milk in the blender with some splenda and lots of ice and make a thick shake. It was much better and I felt full. I had no trouble staying on the liquids.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
jabba,

I have not heard of anyone doing this so I suggest you either run it past the people on the Novartis/Optifast site or your doc and see if there is any degradation to the nutritional value if you freeze it.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Hi Everyone,

I've been having a look at these threads lately and thought I'd give this posting a message thing a try. I was banded back in September, SW 105kg, CW 85kg. I've decided to go back on Opti to try and kickstart my weight-loss again (been a bit naughty lately!).

Thought I'd share a few things I found to help me through the Opti stage prior to my banding:

1. You can purchase 'Keto-Stix' from the chemist which are little strips of paper that you dip or pass through your urine which measures whether you are in ketosis (burning your own fat stores) and how well your body is in ketosis. I found these little strips such a motivator to stay on Opti because I could see when I was burning fat and that helped me to stick to the program. Just remember to NOT do it after having anything to eat or drink because your body won't measure ketosis accurately and you may get discouraged. I found the best time of day was the first thing in the morning before having anything. I love these and they really helped me to stay motivated to not cheat.

2. The bars seemed to fill me up more than the shakes. I spaced the bars/shakes out during the day which kinda followed:
9am - breakfast, black coffee or reg flat white (normal milk as skim milk has more carbohydrates)
10:30am - morning tea - choc Opti bar
12:30 - lunch - 2 cups of allowed vege (vege's seemed to be more satifying for me. As I buy my lunch, I would get stir-fried veg from a local noodle bar with absolutely no sauce but maybe stirfried with garlic)
3pm - afternoon tea - Opti bar
6:30pm - 2 cups of allowed vege (my dietition allowed me more than the max 2 cups per day as the allowed vege's had very little caloric value. You MUST check with your surgeon or dietition first whether you can do this)
8pm - Opti dessert (lemon was my fav - would make it at dinnertime and it would be set by the time I had it).

3. Jolls (diet lollies) helped me through the really tough times :)

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
well I spoke to my dietician today and she said it's a big 'no deal' to black olives. I was so upset i didn't even bother to ask why. So there's the answer folks. No to black olives while on Optifast :(

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Yes, Green Tea is my saviour as well to beat the hunger pains. Today is day 3 for me on Optifast. It's not so much the food I am missing, but the cigarettes right now. It's tough to give up two addictions at once. But the doc said i need to give the cigs up when i started my pre-op diet to avoid blood clots.

Does anyone know if black olives are ok to have in salad during the the optifast phase??

Hi all, I am on day 5 of Opti and this sounds strange but I have found Green Tea to help with the hunger. I tried on Sunday without Green Tea and I was really quite hungry but hey if it helps I'm running with it.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Robyn,

You will be fine - what I have found amazing is that whilst I have been daydreaming about food, the thing that keeps me on the straight and narrow with Opti is the thought of being in the best shape possible for the OP.

Keep reading this board there is lots of great support.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
I am sitting here eating my last packet of salt and vinegar chips, and reading all the inspirational posts by all the brave people that have already gone through this - tomorrow I start a month of Opti and am really nervous that I won't be able to stick to it. It really helps coming here and getting some sort of understanding of what is ahead, and reading how supportive everyone seems to be. Robyn

I have already had my surgery and have kept some aside for future fills so they are still going free to a loving home.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Tracyhilton69, I would hold on to them if I were you, I intend to keep any leftover Optifast as I think they can come in handy on times after the op or after fills. I intend to use mine after the op in the liquid stage and for any other times when I cannot eat, I presume there will be times when the optifast will come in handy.
