I am excited as I know what is at the end and thats what I am focused on.
I also need to say thanks for this board as it has helped so much with information and reading what everyone has gone or going through. it is going to my Journey alot easier :) |

I'm on Day 7 of Optifast now and am beginning to feel a bit better about it. So take hope! I still feel tired at times but I just focus turning up at the hospital with a clean liver and my abdomen easier to get into surgically!!
I go to bed earlier and make sure I spend more time on after shower care (face creams and body creams). I found that I've already lost 5kgs, so if you feel it's hard to go on with Optifast weigh yourself and that will be quite a surprise and a boost to find there will be less weight overall to lose with the band.
I live by myself so I am fortunate enough to have been able to empty my house of food. The fridge has jelly and some cauliflower and broccoli in it. |

Judith,
No the miso soup actually goes to the count of extra fluid (the 2 litres of water you are meant to have)

Judith,
I was type two diabetic at this stage. I just kept monitoring my BGL and stuck with the 3 shakes and veggies. within a week I was having to cut down my medication.

jude,
Miso is an Asian fish based soup. You can usually pick it up from the Asian section of your supermarket.

Saundo and pooga, sorry you are having such a bad time on Optifast. I don't know why, but maybe check with doctor if ok to use an extra shake when not feeling the best, must be better than maybe "falling off the wagon". I had "the mother of all headaches" day 3-4, but once over that, I felt fine. Of course the hunger can still be there, and at times I would feel "strange", but usually this was because I had not had enough water. At work I had my shake and then used to fill up container with water (fill to the top), and I would be drinking this inbetween shakes, sometimes filling up again. So at work I would have about 3 containers full of water, plus tea/coffee and the shakes (breakfast and lunch). At night I would first have my vegies at dinner time, and some more water, and a little later my last shake for the day.
I hope things get better, I am now in day 3 post op, and still using Optifast, and feeling quite good today. Still a little sore, but I can feel improvement from hour to hour just about, another couple of days I am sure I will be nearly back to normal. |

| I have been on opti for 10 days and am still waiting to feel better. I have been drinking about 3 litres of water (or water with the juice of one lemon) and having the 3 milkshakes a day plus either soup or vegetables, but I still feel hungry all the time, headachy and awful. It is a grim struggle to keep going. I have lost a few kilos though, hard to say how much as my scales are very unreliable and weigh differently all the time. And I am getting so much more exercise running to the loo every five minutes. I am getting lots of strange looks at work! I can't wait for the 'feel better' stage kicks in. |

Howdy,
Just wondering if anyone else has had fainting spells while in the opti stage??? I've been on it 4 days and yesterday I felt faint all day and today I fainted twice. Someone said its because I'm not eating enouhgt being on the optifast. I'm having 3 serves of opti and 2 cups of veggies like it says but being soooo much bigger than the average person (talking height here) and wonder if it could be it. |

Hang in there, and make sure you drink plenty of water, and do have the allowed vegetables. The first few days are difficult, but if you can get over them without cheating, then you will start feeling better, actually I felt quite good once I got into it. I guess I had the benefit of actually liking Optifast.
I am now on day 2 after surgery, and still sipping Optifast. It is so worth it in the end. |

My advice (and I absolutely do not mean to sound smug)would be to use the optifast phase to get you into a good headspace for learning to live with the band. For me I just found that I was resigned to mealtimes not really being anything to look forward to so it took my focus off being obsessed by food and this has stood me in good stead post band (7 weeks banded).
I know it is early days but for me half the battle is in the head. I think if you are struggling now you may continue to struggle after the band because there is still a certain amount of willpower involved after being banded until you get the right amount of fill.
So try to use this phase as a positive. I am a really fussy eater and dreaded opti but ended up living mostly on the berry crunch bar and also on miso soup (dietician said miso was OK to have) which gave me at least a bit of variety.
Hope this helps.

Hi all,
I am on the Opti now and am REALLY REALLY struggling with it. I am due to have surgery on Wednesday and I am just about ready to give up on the Opti and eat like I would normally. I also ate some chicken yesterday and am feeling really bad for actually eating and am starting to worry about the fact that I did. Can anyone offer me some words of wisdom as I'm really at the end.
Thanks |

I'm also finding the Optifast stage difficult. I don't have a lot of energy and I find my brain feels a bit foggy. I also feel VERY cranky! 8 days of it to go...Op on the 11th like the other Karen.

Raelene,
Were you told you could have coffee, I realize you are having decaf so it should be okay, only skim milk would be acceptable I think.

Karen,
it probably is just a mind game telling you you want food. You can have celery, tomatoes and other allowed veggies so maybe that will help? At least it's something to crunch on.

Jabba,
Glad you have now slipped into the "comfortable zone", just don't let the head play mind games with you and you should be fine.
Make sure you drink heaps of water to combat those headaches.

Mra bear,
Are you drinking at least 2 litres of water a day? The headaches could be from dehydration.
Sorry it's all I can think of that might be causing it.

I have been on Opti since Monday (4th day). Yesterday i was ready to give up i had no energy and a massive headache. I actually drove into the bottleshop to grab a couple of cans to give me some energy.......However i did not stop i drove around the back and went home....
The first thing my wife said to me this morning was "your breath is stinky"!! I thought that this must be Ketosis!!! I have a slight hedache but a glass of water and a panadine and i feel 1000% percent better this morning and have heaps if energy!!! Glad a resisted and old excuse and pushed myself through.. Had i not been reading these forums i would have probally broken yesterday... So thank you guys!! |
