Savoury suggestions:
~Vegie Soup( You can add other allowed vegie to it )
Dice 1 onion and brown it in 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Add sliced celery and mushrooms and fry them off too
Add 1 litre of ready made stock or stock cubes in water
Then add as many allowed veggies as you like.
I added zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli & cabbage
and then 2 tins of crushed tomatoes with garlic & herbs.
Once it's all soft & cooked through I get the potato masher
& mash the veggies so they are not in big clumps.
~~~~~~~~~To make Dinner a 3 course meal! The soup, shake and Low Joule Jelly for dessert.
Soup recipe:
2 lge leeks
500g broccoli
1 bunch spring onions
1 clove garlic
1 tspn dried herbs
1 litre vege stock
olive oil
Cut all veges up small, put into pan with olive oil and cook for a few mins, add stock/herbs/garlic/season ing and cook until soft then blitz in blender. I then water it down and bag into portions and freeze. Take out when required, microwave and add tspn olive oil when serving and mix in.
~Try a stock cube dissolved in hot water or low carb cuppa soups.
~1 teaspoon of curry powder added to the chicken soup
~Add the following to the Optifast chicken soup:
1 zucchini
1 onion
2 cloves of garlic
1 red capsicum
Divide in half as this is enough for 2 days worth of veggies and put one lot in the fridge for tomorrow
~Mix up optifast chicken soup Add a splash of dark soy Add a splash of red wine vinegar (to neutralize the soy taste)Add veggies
~Optifast also now has Spring Vegetable soup |
Re posting from earlier in this thread:
Some surgeons will allow Tony Fergusons or other VLCDs but most stick with Optifast for a number of reasons:
~Optifast is the ONLY VLCD which has been medically and scientifically proven to work.
~Optifast is the only VLCD that has been proven to be nutritionally balanced
~Up until a few short years ago Optifast was only available by prescription
~Optifast is produced by Novartis, a drug company who must adhere to stricter guidelines than food companies.
Also the nutrition and carb levels differ from brand to brand.
Just trying to bring the suggestions together.
Optifast seems to taste better when mixed with very cold water. It is best mixed with a stab blender or in a shaker container.
Just a reminder, as yummy as all these additives are PLEASE consult you surgeon/patient liaison person BEFORE adding ANYTHING to Optifast.
If you are doing Optifast pre Op most surgeons WILL NOT allow fruit of any kind at that stage. Some surgeons just don't allow it.
Now to make them taste a little more interesting:
~Low Joule jelly crystals, just add them to 15ml of hot water to dissolve them before adding to the shakes
~Half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder,decaf coffee powder, strawberry essence, peppermint essence, coconut essence, orange essence, coconut rum liqueur style essence, low joule caramel and low joule fruit toppings in the vanilla shakes.
~Essences from the cake isle of the supermarket can be considered for either of the flavours of shakes. Peppermint, orange or Strawberry essences in the choc shakes work really well.
~There are a few companies that make sugar free syrups than can be used to flavour Optifast.One is DaVinci Syrups you can google them for an Australian supplier
~Another one is Torani Syrups, again this is the supplier I use:
http://www.passthetoast.com/products/catalogue.php ?catId=6
~If you are permitted fruit then the following options can also be used:
~Add a banana to the vanilla shake.
~Add optifast either dessert or chocolate shake into a blender with 200mls of cold water then add:
~coffee/mocha Mixer : 4 large ice cubes 2 shot of espresso add hazelnut essence.
~Mixed berry trio : scoop of mixed berries two large ice cubes, strawberry essence.
~Cherry Ripe sundae : Four icecubes one hand full of frozen cherries , strawberry essence |
Hey Raelene.
Don't stress about any cravings you've had. I'll be honest with you and 2 days before my surgery I went on a big food binge and then finished my last day on Opti and everything was fine just don't do it the night before because you want to make sure that everything is clensed from your body before surgery. Don't stress you;ve done a great job sticking to it for so long. Good luck with your surgery. I hope you have a speedy recovery.
rayls,
i has a big blowout 2 days before my op and the doc said everything looked great. i didnt tell him of course!!!!
keep your chin up , things get easier on the other side.
Will be thinking of you. You are going to Western Private arent you? I was there last week , had room 107. If you get there a bit earlier you get the best rooms. I was supposed to be there at 11.30 and got there at 11. Was surprised to get a single room. It was great and the nurses are really nice.
Will be thinking of you.
Hi
I'm on day 5 today of opti - 12 more to go...doing very well. I have been having my miso (woolies or coles sell it) between water and diet cordial, it fills me up.
I felt awful yesterday - a little depressed and touchy but am over that now. Headaches have gone too.
Just got to get through the 1st weekend - always my hardest.
Really glad to have this forum - knowing I'm not the only one thinking of something and getting it answered by all you lovely people.
Pooga,
I don't think one slip up will hurt anything. I did the same thing. Had a huge burger and fries about 5 days before surgery. Just as long as the one time doesn't turn into 2, 3, etc. Good Luck. I have to tell you that this has been the best thing I've done.....been banded 9 weeks, and have lost a total of 34lb. |
Mary,
You just need to remind yourself WHY it is so important to stick with it. every time you want to eat something you shouldn't ask yourself is the taste of it worth not getting a band for, because you know that is a possibility. Is it worth the guilt you feel afterward as well? I seriously doubt it.
alady,
depending on your start weight you could expect to shed around 2kg a week with 2 Opti and a meal every day. Good luck with the waiting lists. I know what that's like.
| Im yet to get an appointment for lapband, Im on a list, a LONG one, but hope that sometime next year my name will come up, whats another year when you have all ready waited two since applying. Anyway, I am wondering what sort of weight loss would you expect if I was to do optifast twice a day and a light meal for tea. I ask this as I have to fly interstate in 6 weeks from now and Im stressing that I wont fit the plane seat belts, I cant stand the thought of anymore embarrassment. |
| I am 4 days out from my surgery and had a bit of a binge today. Do you think one day of slipping up will cause any damage??? It was mostly protein. I haven't touched any caffine in weeks or booze. If I workout for the next 4 days and stick to the plan do you think all will be alright??? Don't want to have them abort the surgery |
As someone who thought she wouldn't get through the pre-op optifast stage....it is possible.
i found that when i was craving 'real food' i would do the following for my evening meal - dry fry 125g of chicken breast diced really small and smothered in all spice seasoning and added that to a bowl of shredded lettuce and a diced boiled egg.
It's like a ceasar salad without all the naughty bits. It was filling, and satisfying. My dietician had said if i fall off the wagon, fall with proteins and not carbs....CARBS ARE THE ENEMY!
I did the chicken/lettuce/boiled egg for the last 4 days before my op and when i saw the surgeon post op he said my liver was beautiful and had shrunk well. Everyone is different though, so perhaps check with your own dietician first.
i hope this helps any of you that are stuggling with the pre-op optifast stage.
GOOD LUCK, YOU CAN DO IT....SHORT TERM PAIN IS WORTH THE LONG TERM GAIN :D xx |
| try and avoid dairy products because if the liver is not reduced enough in size they will abandon the surgery. They have to make room for the port. After the first few days you get used to it. I am now 14 kilos lighter with 3 sleeps to go till my op. It is worth it. Im down a dress size and also my face has lost its bloated look. When I think what a 10 kilo bag of spuds from the market feels like to carry, cant imagine I was carrying 1.5 of those up until 2 weeks ago. Its worth it to persevere. I too am a coffee addict but im managing black tea with sweetner and its paid off. Soon enough you can eat what you want(within reason). Think of the the shakes and straw diet as a short term thing. I know day 3 after surgery I will be able to have a white coffee then, even if only a small cup...it will feel great to know I can do it guilt free. We are all here for you when it gets tough.. so try and be strong. it goes so quickly. Cant believe I am about to be officially a bandit in 36 hours!!!!! |
Hello all
This is my second day at Opti. I am due my op. on the 25th Aug. I was supposed to start opti 4 days ago but I had to drive the first day and I just couldnt do it on the next two days. But I have managed one whole day yesterday and I am still going strong to day. I did eat a bucket of green veges with soy sauce and morocan spice last night. I was so full. I feel ok and only have waves of cravings for food like crumpets with a whole tub of butter or roast chicken.
Do you think its ok to have decaf black coffee? I must confess to still having 2 full strength coffee with milk for breakfast. Its my last remaining vice!
All the best everyone
Raylene,
I didn't suffer with the heartburn. The diarrhea is because the bars are full of fibre and you're not having anything else. Could you try switching the meals around so you have a shake or two during the day instead. The vanilla and chocolate shakes don't have any added fibre. it may help.
