Hi Pyretta
I saw my surgeon regarding the bowel/tummy problem I was having post-op and he was able to determine by prodding in the right spot that the bowel was inflamed and was causing sensitivity to my stomach as well, hence why I was having trouble determing if the discomfort was coming from my bowel or tummy. He believes it is a dietary problem combined with not drinking enough water (I was only on shakes) and has put me on mushies. Yesterday was the first day in nearly two weeks the discomfort eased and although I can still feel it slightly today it's heaps better than it was. The surgeon also told me to make sure I take Metamucil or something similar everyday.

Thanks for the kind words. It really is sobering isn't it?
It would have been too easy to go to the pub with everyone else at lunchtime today to talk and reminisc, but I was strong...myself and another colleague decided to stick with our routine and go to the gym. Spending $20 on cheap chardonnay wouldn't bring him back and the exercise high actually made us feel a bit better.
Normally I would use this as an excuse to cook up a storm, crack open a couple of bottles of wine and pig out...use food and wine to lift the mood after a bad day. But that is irrational - it doesn't change what is in the past. So I've stuck with it today and am really proud of myself.
Bring on Day 3. |

Sarah,
It is always hard when a passing is unexpected. I hope you and you colleagues will be able to support each other through this time.
My thought also go to their family, 33 is just too young.
Be gentile on yourself at this time, trying to stick to a strict dieting regime during times of stress is very difficult. Don't start feeling guilt on top of your sadness.

Hi Sarah, what very sad news, and shocking to receive it at work, where your memories of your collegue are possibly strongest. It is really hard not to toss in the towel sometimes when life goes bad but if you can persist it will be so worth it. I am on Day 2 of Optifast and despite dreading it, I'm doing ok. I just told myself I don't have a choice at this stage and will do my best. Can you have a bar for lunch if the shake is a no no? My thoughts are with you.
Cheers, Susie |

| Sarah, I'm so sorry to learn of your news at work. It is scary how fragile life can be. My (adult) daughter who lives with me is driving to Adelaide with a friend for a holiday tomorrow, and yes I will be giving her an extra cuddle tonight. My thoughts are with you and your colleagues. Toni |

Thanks for that.
I arrived at work this morning happy in the knowledge that I could have my coffee so long as I compensated for it with extra water.
But on arrival I realised something was wrong - one of our colleagues died suddenly last night. Heart attack. Only 33 and with none of the usual risk factors - not overweight, very active, non smoker etc. Tragic.
We went to talk it over at the coffee shop and the first mouthful nearly made me sick. God knows how I will be able to stomach the shake at lunch.
Hold your loved ones a little bit closer tonight and treasure every single day.
You never know if it could be your last. |

Sarah,
Congratulations on taking control.
Now to your questions:
1)Coffee is a no no because of it's diuretic affect. Having said that my doc has allowed me to have 2 a day since beginning on Optifast as long as there was no sugar. I do have mine with the smallest amount of skim milk and use Hermesetas sweetener because it is the only one I found without carbs.
2)I would suggest you have the shake instead of the stir fried veg, especially if you are doing the 3 shakes a day. If only to assist in getting you body into ketosis quicker and to know you are getting all the nutrients you need. I strictly adhered to only 3 shakes for the first 6 weeks to make sure I got my mind in the right place and give myself the best possable chance for rapid weight loss.
I hope that helps.

hi there everyone
I have just started on Optifast today as my second last resort...banding will be my last resort.
There are some really inspriational stories here...Pyretta...you are amazing. Truly inspiring.
As my username suggests I am currently 108kg and am aiming to get down to 70kg. A long haul. So I've started a blog to help me track my Optifast challenge, keep myself motivated and perhaps make a record of my progress that might help other people.
the address is...
http://myoptifastchallenge.blogspot.com/
I've written a bit of a background about the story of my weight gain and I'd really appreciate any comments, suggestions or advice anyone has time to make.
At the end of Day One I already have two questions...
1)Coffee - what is the reason coffee is a no-no? I am not sure I can get through the day without one coffee. I don't have sugar and am happy to have something with even just the tiniest drop of skim milk. Or is this absolutely not allowed?
2) After my little vegie stir fry tonight I'm actually not hungry...I really don't want my third shake for the day...do I have to have it? |

Lately my daughter has gotten me into half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder in the vanilla shakes. Very yummy for breakfast.
Don't forget you can also use essences from the cake isle of the supermarket. I've done a very nice choc mint in the past as well.
There are a few companies that make sugar free syrups than can be used to flavour Optifast.
One is DaVinci Syrups, and these are the suppliers I use, you'll need to to scroll down to the sugar free syrups; http://www.pineteacoffee.com.au/products.php?paren t=5
The other one I have used and was nice was Torani Syrups, again this is the supplier I use:
http://www.passthetoast.com/products/catalogue.php ?catId=6
Low Joule jelly crystals, just add them to 15ml of hot water to dissolve them before adding to the shakes.
Just a reminder, as yummy as all these additives are PLEASE consult you surgeon/patient liaison person BEFORE adding ANYTHING to Optifast.
If you are doing Optifast pre Op most surgeons WILL NOT allow fruit of any kind at that stage.
Some surgeons just don't allow it.

Thanks for that feedback. I've had a horrible thought since my last post. The discomfort I am feeling is a warm to hot sensation but not burning. I hope it isn't the cortosone I am taking for the Poly Myalgae Rheumatica that is irritating my stomach. I am taking Somac which is supposed to stop the cortisone causing irritation. I'll ring my doctor in the morning and have a chat to him.

leanne,
I sometimes get pain around the belly button if I don't drink enough water. Even using my bowels every day sometimes I get a bit backed up. A tablespoon of NuLax at night and a good clean out the next morning usually does the trick. Fortunately it has been a while sine I have forgotten to drink :)
I hope you get it sorted soon, I doubt you have stretched the pouch though. Let me know what you find out.

Hi Pyretta
Have you ever had tummy problems on Optifast as a result of not drinking enough water? I've been using the new Xantrax shakes for the past two weeks and I have been having some discomfort usually around the belly button area or a little above. Sometimes I can't figure out if it is the bowel area or tummy area that is causing the discomfort. I know I should be drinking 2 litres of water a day I'm probably getting in around 1 litre, I know that's not enough but post-op I'm really pushing myself to get the two litres in. I'm trying to figure out what is causing the problem because I feel like a new bandster worrying if I have stretched my pouch. I am seeing my doctor on Friday for the first post-op fill and as of today I have stopped the shakes and sticking to liquids for a couple of days to see if the discomfort stops. If it does stop I know it was the shakes and probably not enough water. I am a little bound up but not fully constipated so have had some pear juice today. I'd appreciate your thoughts please.

Tinkerbell,
I figured it this way, it took me 40 years to get to 196kg and I can't blame anyone but me for getting so big. Yes there is genetics, I have 6 sisters, 5 of them are overweight, but none of them got as big as I did. So I have to work damn hard to shift this weight myself.
I have had fantastic support from some really great people that I may never meet except through boards like this, and they have really helped me along the way. As much as my hubby cares he could never know just what it means to be that size, people here understand.
I am patient and believe it will happen for me when the time is right and I have learned all the lessons I need to learn.

hk_21 Tinkerbell,
10kg in 8 weeks is very doable as long as you stick with it. I know it won't be easy, but that's what this site is for.
Keep telling yourself it's possible and it is!

I am not banded yet because I am waiting in the Victorian public system.
I cannot afford private health insurance. My start weight was so high that I have to be banded at one of the larger public hospitals.
After talking to yet another surgeon yesterday he isn't even sure the band will effective help me loose weight, just maintain the losses, either way I still have about 60kg to go and doubt I'll be able to shed it all with Optifast.

tinker,
I hope you don't take this the wrong way but if you think you are not going to like it then you probably aren't going to like it.
Look at is this way it's 8 weeks to get healthier. Write down all the reasons you want/need to be successful with it and then stick that list on the fridge/pantry.
It's going to be really tough for the first few days on it, but get through day 5 and you won't look back.
I didn't think I'd get through 12 weeks of intensive Optifast and managed 6 months! I'm still doing 2 shakes and a meal every day and at 64kg down in 14 months I really have to say that Optifast saved my life! Now if I could only get a band to help maintain the loss and help me shed the next 60kg!.
