Michelle,

I'm sorry I haven't heard of that side effect from anyone before. I suppose it will have different effects on different people. I hope it settles down after a few days for you.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Just a reminder, as yummy as all these additives are PLEASE consult you surgeon/patient liaison person BEFORE adding ANYTHING to Optifast.
If you are doing Optifast pre Op most surgeons WILL NOT allow fruit of any kind at that stage. Some surgeons just don't allow it.

Some savoury Suggestions:
~Try a stock cube dissolved in hot water or low carb cuppa soups.
~1 teaspoon of curry powder added to the chicken soup
~To make the chicken soup taste good (and smell good)
1 zucchini
1 onion
2 cloves of garlic
1 red capsicum
...fry in allocated oil
Divide in half as this is enough for 2 days worth of veggies and put one lot in the fridge for tomorrow
Mix up optifast soup Add a splash of dark soy (to hide taste and smell)Add a splash of red wine vinegar (to neutralize the soy taste)Add veggies

~Instead of buying the chicken soup which is quite a bit more expensive that the shakes make up soup. Dinner is then a 3 course meal! The soup, shake and Low Joule Jelly for dessert.
Soup recipe:
2 lge leeks
500g broccoli
1 bunch spring onions
1 clove garlic
1 tspn dried herbs
1 litre vege stock
olive oil
Cut all veges up small, put into pan with olive oil and cook for a few mins, add stock/herbs/garlic/season ing and cook until soft then blitz in blender. I then water it down and bag into portions and freeze. Take out when required, microwave and add tspn olive oil when serving and mix in.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Just trying to bring the suggestions together.

Optifast seems to taste better when mixed with very cold water. It is best mixed with a stab blender or in a shaker container.
Now to make them taste a little more interesting:
~Low Joule jelly crystals, just add them to 15ml of hot water to dissolve them before adding to the shakes
~Half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder, decaf coffee powder, strawberry essence, peppermint essence, coconut essence, orange essence, coconut rum liqueur style essence, low joule caramel and low joule fruit toppings in the vanilla shakes.
~Essences from the cake isle of the supermarket can be considered for either of the flavours of shakes. Peppermint, orange or Strawberry essences in the choc shakes work really well.
~There are a few companies that make sugar free syrups than can be used to flavour Optifast. One is DaVinci Syrups you can google them for an Australian supplier
~Another one is Torani Syrups, again this is the supplier I use:
http://www.passthetoast.com/products/catalogue.php ?catId=6
~If you are permitted fruit then the following options can also be used:
~Add a banana to the vanilla shake.
~Add optifast either dessert or chocolate shake into a blender with 200mls of cold water then add:
~coffee/mocha Mixer : 4 large ice cubes 2 shot of espresso add hazelnut essence.
~Mixed berry trio : scoop of mixed berries two large ice cubes, strawberry essence.
~Cherry Ripe sundae : Four icecubes one hand full of frozen cherries , strawberry essence.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Tink,

I have never used skim milk in Optifast. I do know others have, but I figure there would be more calories if you used the skim milk.

As I've been using it for weight loss not liver shrinking I'm not sure what effect it would have on the pre op diet. Just my thoughts, as alway, though.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Im a member with National Pharmacies and I get 20% off. Its about $54 there and with the 20% off I get it for about $43.00. Thats a pretty good saving.

A hint with the Optifast, I bought a good blender just prior to starting optifast. Its one that has 10 or so options/settings (milkshakes/smooties/mixi ng/ice crush etc). I find that the optifast with skim milk and about 4 ice cubes with a really good blend, makes it really very nice. Its really creamy. I tried it this morning without ice (ran out) and it was amazing how different it tasted.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
curvymc,

Pasta = carbs.
I have a major carb craving too (when im dieting or not), so bad i asked my doctor and dietician about it.
the told me carb craving can be a product of a chromium deficiency... and to get some chromium replacement tablets from the chemist.
chromium deficiency is quite common now. Chromium is found in the soil and taken up by plants, but because of how we are continually cropping the same areas, the chromium have been leeched and plants no longer have the chromium content that they are supposed to have.

I got Blackmores Sugar Balance (which is a chromium formula). you have to take them before EVERY meal... but I must say that they REALLY do work - noticeable so.

When I am taking them, no carb cravings at all (but if i skip a day or two it comes right back).

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Hi curvy

I've been banded for going on three years. I can so relate to the TV chefs problem you are having but I experienced it the first few months after banding.

I found the best way to cope was not watch them at all, I even had to switch channels when they were being advertised so I wouldn't be tempted to eat. Even food commercials used to drive me crazy. These days I enjoy watching them without the need to want to eat.

Hi Everyone, I am on optifast for three weeks leading up to my operation on 3rd August....I have been having severe cravings for pasta, everytime I turn the telly on there seems to be some tv chef making a pasta dish!! Has anyone else had this experience? Thats the only thing I have been craving since starting Optifast.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Lilly,

You wanted to know, "If they can stick to a diet for weeks on end and lose weight - why are they having the surgery??"

Well I shed 60kg on Optifast and YES I am STILL having the surgery. Why?

Because Optifast got me down to 132kg and since having to come off it for medical reasons I am now 144kg.

I think those figures speak for themselves.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Lilly ,
the first few days are the worst, hungry, headaches etc, but after that it gets easier, you body adjusts, and the scales start going down.
I also kept telling myself that any weight that I lost was never coming back.
I went really hard and was very strict with myself, but had a big meal out planned a few days before the op - kind of like a last supper! which i looked forward to, and enjoyed without any guilt because i knew I had earnt it, then the next morning I was back in to the shakes for the last few days.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Hi Lilly,
The reason that many surgeons require people to do time on optifast is that during the placing of the lap band the liver needs to be lifted and held out of the way, which is more difficult if the liver is enlarged or fatty - or both.
Optifast is difficult to stick to but I was able to make myself do it because I wanted to minimize the risk of complications during surgery and by reducing my liver size/fat that helped. I also knew it was for a limited time, which made it easier.
Re your statement -'If they can stick to a diet for weeks on end and lose weight - why are they having the surgery??'
Because once you stop doing the optifast - which at some point you have to , the weight will come back, and usually brings friends. Also 20kgs is a lot of weight for someone who's BMI is 35, for someone who's BMI is 45 or more, 20kgs is probably less than a third of the way there.
Most of us who have had or are considering lap bands know all about dieting and losing weight , and I know myself I have done it over and over again, its not the losing it that is the problem for me, but the keeping it off.
Good luck with the optifast, its a great kickstart towards getting to your goal weight and I wish the best with it.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
hi guys!

i have a BMI of 35 - my doc told me to go on optifast two weeks before surgery - he said this has NOTHING to do with fat or weight and everything to do with the shrinking the liver (not the fat around the liver like ive been reading here).

now this sounds great. however, im having LAP BANDING surgery- a surgery for people who over eat - because i am overweight and cant stick to diets!!
If i could stick to a diet (optifast included), I wouldnt be having the surgery in the first place.
Im amazed to read all the people here who lose up to 20 kilos on the optifast diet before their surgery. If they can stick to a diet for weeks on end and lose weight - why are they having the surgery??

I just cant see myself realistically sticking to the optifast for more than four or five days, although of course im going to give it my best shot.

And 7xl,

My Mum has issues with low sodium. She just mixes half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of cordial and drinks it all down. Can't taste it.

Or maybe you could try Staminade and those kinds of sports drinks that have sodium in them.
