Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Yes that was so me, i will admit at the end of day 3 im certainly not as hungry as i was but just bored with the food i keep trying to mix up the vegies n stuff!

However, i had to come home from work early today cos i have the worst 'wind' ever! I had it yesterday and assumed it would pass- does this continue ???

Good news is i have already lost .5 of a kilo in 3 days- woo hoo!

There are so many mixed info about what the doctors want and dont want on the opti- my dr at the Centre for Bariatric Surgery just told me to go on the opti- but i havent spoken to a dietitian.

Good thing is that the first 2 weeks is not essential for surgery so i dont mind if im going over the allowed vegie limit for a while- i will cut it down after the first two weeks. I just cant believe i havent eaten a CARB in 3 days!

Has anyone tried the soups or desserts ??

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Hi Creature,
I am on day 7 of Opti...day 2 was my WORST day...there was tears and all and I dont cry easily! I was even thinking of not going thru with the op it was that BAD!!!..... But I stuck to it and today I have hardly felt hungry at all. So it does get ALOT better...stick to it and keep reading the board...it's a great motivation tool, especially when you read everyones great stories.
My doc allows the 2 cups of veg only, so I had a cup for lunch and a cup for tea..so I didnt feel like I wasnt eating anything.
You can do it!...Just keep thinking of the great reward at the end!!

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Creature,

The first couple of days were horrible as far as energy and hunger. If you can hang in another day, it will get better. I decided to drink a shake every 3 hours, or, as soon as the hunger started. That way I wouldn't get to that point of no return and 'fall off the wagon'. I am on day 11 of my 2 weeks preop liquid diet. I have lost almost 10 pounds. I did eat some tortilla soup and a bite of cheese. Also, I did have 1-2 tomato soup per day. I hope this helps, good luck. (My surgery is June 12).

My dietician wouldnt allow fruit but you can eat as many allowed veggies as you like. Tinned beetroot wouldnt be allowed because of the sugar Id say.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
HELLLLP im only at the end of day 2 and im exhausted from no food on the bloody opti diet!! and absolutley defeated that i have lost no weight yet- hahaha i know unrealistic expectations- its the exhaustedness talking!

Hahha im ok but i kinda feel so out of it! I am doing opti for a month pre op - 2weeks by choice 2 weeks necessary!

Does it do much damage to eat over the allowed vegie limit???

Also is beetroot from the can allowed???

Also, i brought some diabetic sugar free caramel chews- is that legal?? haha

As you might all tell im definitely not used to dieting!

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
MrsBear,

There is no need to take a multi while on Optifast, but it's up to you. Best of luck with your Opti journey.

Have you been for your pre Op at the Alfred yet? The day that takes a few hours and you see up to 8 specialists?

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Im hoping to get my date for July this week from the Alfred hopsital (I am told I will be notified 2 weeks prior to surgery of my date) I made the decision to start optifast so I am ready for the start of july (wishful thinking probably)so wish me luck. I am also giving up smoking the same day. I did really enjoy my steak for dinner knowing it will be a long time before I have one.I am psyched up for this now. I am ready. Today is the start of the beginning of my life.I am also taking multi vitamins just to keep energy levels up.Is this a good idea?

Ollie,

Not everyone has a lot of pain. I'm sure your surgeon is aware of your other medical conditions and will take those into account when thinking about what pain relief to give you.

I have had very little pain, either with the banding or any of the port replacements.

Thanks Melanie...the biscuit idea gave me a good laugh.
But I was thinking pancakes might be tasy! with lots of icecream and syrup of course.
Hmm wonder how my dietician would like that idea.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Reposting...
Just trying to bring the suggestions together.

Optifast seems to taste better when mixed with very cold water. It is best mixed with a stab blender or in a shaker container.
Just a reminder, as yummy as all these additives are PLEASE consult you surgeon/patient liaison person BEFORE adding ANYTHING to Optifast.
If you are doing Optifast pre Op most surgeons WILL NOT allow fruit of any kind at that stage. Some surgeons just don't allow it.
Now to make them taste a little more interesting:
~Low Joule jelly crystals, just add them to 15ml of hot water to dissolve them before adding to the shakes
~Half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder, decaf coffee powder, strawberry essence, peppermint essence, coconut essence, orange essence, coconut rum liqueur style essence, low joule caramel and low joule fruit toppings in the vanilla shakes.
~Essences from the cake isle of the supermarket can be considered for either of the flavours of shakes. Peppermint, orange or Strawberry essences in the choc shakes work really well.
~There are a few companies that make sugar free syrups than can be used to flavour Optifast. One is DaVinci Syrups you can google them for an Australian supplier
~Another one is Torani Syrups, again this is the supplier I use:
http://www.passthetoast.com/products/catalogue.php ?catId=6
~If you are permitted fruit then the following options can also be used:
~Add a banana to the vanilla shake.
~Add optifast either dessert or chocolate shake into a blender with 200mls of cold water then add:
~coffee/mocha Mixer : 4 large ice cubes 2 shot of espresso add hazelnut essence.
~Mixed berry trio : scoop of mixed berries two large ice cubes, strawberry essence.
~Cherry Ripe sundae : Four icecubes one hand full of frozen cherries , strawberry essence

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Re posting from earlier in this thread:

Some surgeons will allow Tony Fergusons or other VLCDs but most stick with Optifast for a number of reasons:
~Optifast is the ONLY VLCD which has been medically and scientifically proven to work.
~Optifast is the only VLCD that has been proven to be nutritionally balanced
~Up until a few short years ago Optifast was only available by prescription
~Optifast is produced by Novartis, a drug company who must adhere to stricter guidelines than food companies.

Also the nutrition and carb levels differ from brand to brand.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Ok day three of Optigunk down and im still alive.

I just made an opti friendly version of tabouleh for dinner with parsley, mint, onion and tomato. Oh and a squeeze of lime which I dont think is allowed but I had no lemon. It was quite edible but my family are eating chops and the smell is making my mouth water.

Thanks to Karen for the parsley suggestion.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
I have got it into my mind, as a way of helping me cope without all my yummies, that I am breaking up with food, it has been the other person in my life for so long now and there is only room for one (my husband) so it has to go.
So food you are getting a Dear John letter from me and it is over. Ha Ha

Only 22 days of fatness to go.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Thanks Fairy and Karen,
It is so incredible that there is so much support here...makes me feel so much better about this whole process.
I will definitely try your tips Karen. Luckily Im only on the opti for ten days pre surgery and then the dietician said two weeks post to keep up with the shakes but im already thinking I might be trying to substitute some Vitalize.
I cant chew gum, Im going to sound like a nut case but I have a recurring nightmare where there is gum filling my mouth and I am frantically trying to dig it out but there is just more and more...sounds childish but its a really awful dream so I avoid gum these days!

So Karen the spirulina wont affect the ketosis? Id rather have a bad taste and be losing weight :)
I dont think we are allowed peas.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
minimising me- get some spirulina tablets- or powder- tablets u dont have to taste thou.

take 3 a day, and also
pick up some curly p a r s e ly, a 500 gm bag of baby spinach and some frozen peas.
in a pot simmer a stock cube-chicken or beef, 1.5 litre water, add 3/4 cup peas, the spinach and washed parsley. turn off the heat, stir till the spinach is wilted, stick in the hand blender and puree. add salt to taste and black pepper- i fould this really helpful
if you dont already, grab some maldon salt, or other good quality sea salt, makes a huge difference- I only use cooking salt for cooking

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
yes, three weeks of opti... then 2 weeks of the liquids phase! enjoy!!! :-)

Yes i believe the taste is ketosis. To tell you the truth, i still get that taste now sometimes. I don't know how to manage it other than chewing gum. Lol might be a bit expensive to keep on with the mouthwash! Random that it wakes you up though?!

Does this awful taste in your mouth last three weeks as well?
I assume its the ketosis but its awful and kept waking me up! Who ever heard of a bad taste waking you up?
I brushed my teeth a zillion times and used half a bottle of mouthwash.
