Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
After the sort of day I've had today, I just might take myself bayside way, meet you at the bakery, and scoff everything in sight. Then we'll see if I can PB - it'll be one of the first proper banding experiences I've had.

Ignore me - I'm sh!tty and I hate a cr@ppy day.

If I feel at all like this tomorrow, I'm better off not going anywhere. But if I manage to rally and think anyone could put up with me for 5 minutes, I might be there.

Enjoy yourselves. :-)

Trust me post op is way better with the ketosis in place and no carb cravings when you have done the hard yards on opti. It is very much worth it and though it seems a long haul now you will look back and go wow that was a peice of cake!... made of cauliflower and air of course..heehe he he

Hi trixiebelle08,
Gee I hope the month goes quick for you. It seems many surgeons have different theories, one lady I know just had to do it for a week then you see that some surgeons don't even require people to do it at all,Grrr. I have 2 weeks of optifast, 10 more days to go. Cant go quick enough for me.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Day 4 on Optifast, I had the coffee optifast this morning and did not particularly like it, had to sip water in between drinking it. I do add ice and put it in the blender as that helps some. I might add the chocolate and coffee optifast together then halve it and have that, someone suggested that on here, I might be able to digest it then. Finding it hard while working though to co ordinate my shakes( I work Tue to Thur)I usually have a shake in the morning then drink water while working, but then don't get to have my optifast till I get home, I did buy some cappuccino bars but cant eat them, (tried one but did took me ages to eat it)I know this is not good practice as I have missed out on one of my optifast shakes the last 2 days. Today will work out allright as I am at home today and can prepare my optifast.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
I was just banded yesterday, and I must say I found it really hard to stick to the two weeks on opti. But as others have pointed out, we have to do this to ensure the surgery is as safe as possible. Surely we can stick to two weeks of opti to ensure we are safe! I had real issues sticking to it, but in the end I just kept telling myself that I had to do it!

I am glad I am over that stage now. Now that I am banded I am going to keep to the opti shakes while on the liquids phase. At least then I know that I am getting all the nutrients etc I need.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
I have to say I found the first week very hard and at times wanted to eat my keyboard but then I started to feel great with lots of energy. I started to look the whole opti thing as doing my body a favour as opti has so many wonderful vitamins and other goodies in it. By getting into that mindset I found it easier to cope. I admit I was bad occasionally and had extra veg or an extra shake or mousse and at times would have taken on my dog for a leftover roast lamb shank bone but got through in the end and lost 6kg and quite a few cm. Fortunately for me, I am a fan of jelly - my workmates were amazed at how much I ate at lunchtime while they fanged on fish and chips and golden fried chicken (the swines!). I have to start opti again next week as my surgery got cancelled last time. If you dont hear from me you will know I have in fact eaten my keyboard!!!

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
great advice from the last two posters although i too have whined about the severity of the pre-op diet. I havent been told yet by my surgeon to do the opti, i see him for the first appt on monday, but i am trying to maximise my health by cutting out one or two meals per day and substituting opti, so i guess I am not going into ketosis and when i get the go ahead to do the opti properly it may actually be easier. it is good that people on here can give us the "tough love" pep talk we desperately need to keep us on track. this is surgery and a big big commitment. thanks to kas and losingit. xxx

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Too true! Some wise words from the Sauce.

Most of us know how hard the Opti is - because we had to do it before being banded. It is tough, I won't deny that, but if you can just hang out to get past those first 4 days you will find it so much easier. By then your body will be in ketosis, and the Opti will satisfy your HUNGER. Now, that doesn't mean it will satisfy cravings, but you should not be hungry.

Each day on Opti I told myself I was doing this for a reason, and the reason was that I was heading for surgery, and I had waited so long for that, I didn't want to jeopardise it by doing something silly. I think I would have died if I'd woken up from the anaesthetic and had them say "too bad, no band, fatty liver means we just couldn't manage to do it. Oh well, your choice. When you've managed to stick it out, give us a call and we'll reconsider".

I know that sounds harsh, but really, do you want to risk not having the surgery because you are having difficulty now? Anything you can do to help your surgeon, in the end helps you.

On another point, I really feel that Opti sets you up so well for the life you have post-banding. Those who don't do Opti suffer so much more afterwards. It gets you into the mindset that you can't eat anything and everything, which you need to put into practice immediately post-op. You will be restricted for the first few weeks as to what your intake will be. If you're already in that mindset, that's one less thing you have to deal with afterwards.

No one is pretending this is easy, but in the end you will only be harming yourself if you don't follow the requirements.

I wish you luck and a reduced appetite! I'm sure you'll be so proud of yourself if you can get through this. :-) It's the start of your whole new life.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
To be blunt what these surgeons are thinking is how to make the surgery as safe as possible for you. shocking of them hey how dare they hehehehe Seriously that is the truth, it is not about being cruel or mean it is about protecting you by shrinking your liver so it doesnt get damaged during surgery, which is life threatening stuff. The majority of people doing the surgery have stuck to thousands of diets they just can not keep to them for the rest of their lives, and that weight comes back along with friends. I think most people here can just about cry if they added up all those 10 or so kg they have lost and then had come back with its mates. The good news in all this is that if you stick to the optifast properly then the hunger should go away after about 4 days. If you are drinking at least 2 litres of water a day and still finding it hard to cope after 4 days then run past people here exactly what you are eating to make sue there is not something you are missing and thus accidently eating that you should not. I know that sounds strange but if you cheat you will be hungry, your body will simply not go into ketosis. Everytime you cheat you go back and start the 4 days of suffering all over again. Trust me I stuck to optifast not because I was a saint but because I am a 100% sook and did not want to suffer those 4 days again.
A little reminder here that optifast is mixed ONLY with water not milk (skim or normal) or icecream or cream or bannas etc just a few of the rather silly things people have tried to mix it with to make it taste better. No liver shrinks when you mix your shakes with those things and oh do you suffer big time hunger for it. bottom line is it your dollar and it is you who will wake up minus your band if you have not shrunk your liver enough for the surgery and a HUGE bill to pay.

Hey Karen, I'm with you! I have been on the optifast since July 1 and I am having trouble sticking to it. I have asked myself the same thing - if I could stick to a diet, I wouldn't be the size I am! What are those surgeons thinking?

Trixi,

I've tried the lemon dessert and yess - it is YUMMO!

Also have the choc one which I've only had a couple of times, but I like it too.

I used to have the lemon dessert with either port wine jelly or cranberry apple (?) jelly.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Greetings all from a now-banded former Opti sufferer!

Sue - the headaches will be from your body "de-toxing". You should notice them disappearing by day 4 or so - which is also about the time that the hunger abates. Once you get the carbs out of your system, then you will feel somewhat better. The first few days are the worst, but once you get past them you should find it easier to cope.

Also - for everyone - if you really need something other than the Opti - for goodness sake make it low-fat protein (like a small tin of tuna in springwater) - definitely no carbs! They will put you right back to square one.

Expect the bad breath and foul taste in your mouth too - it's all part of your body burning it's stores. Just keep up with the water which helps to flush the system, and maybe keep some mints (no sugar) handy!

Good luck all. It's not easy, but it IS worth it. :-)

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Hi Sue, The crushed ice sounds a good idea! I know when I first mixed the shake with the recommended 200ml I couldn't believe how thick and disgusting it was, but now that I add at least 300ml it's quite acceptable. Interesting that we're both preferring the drinks through a straw, maybe our sweet taste buds are at the front of our tongues? Rob

I did struggle with eating the cappuccino bars though, took me almost an hour to digest it. Fortunately, I only have 2 optifasts a day plus a light meal, which helps. Also allowed fruit(allowable fruit)if really hungry.

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Hi light77aqua,
I used a straw yesterday to drink my strawberry optifast shake as well, it went down much better. Also I make my shakes with about 50mls water and the rest in crushed ice(use the blender), that makes it more palatable. I did not mind the chocolate shake. I have yet to try the coffee shake, which I have. Only started Opti on the 1st of July. Have had slight headaches and tiredness, but not sure if that is job related as it has been a few busy days at work.

Oh God, I could not stand the chocolate shakes, they were awful. Vanilla with a bit of unsweetened cocoa powder was a lot better (I was allowed this, but check with your doctor/dietitian as you may have different requiremets).

Re:Optifast Stage Reply to this message
Hi Mumofthreeloves,

I didn't like the Opti choc bar the first time I tried it. When I bit into it like a normal choc bar it felt too thick too chew and the flavour seemed like choc/cereal/liquorice all mixed in one. But now I cut each bar into 16 squares (like choc pieces from a chocolate block) and find it not too bad to eat and it seems to satisfy my need to chew something. I have the shakes (mixed with 300 ml of cool water) for brekkie and lunch, then mid-afternoon half my choc bar (8 pieces). For dinner I've been stir-frying vegies with 1 tsp oil and soysauce - yum! Then finishing my choc pieces (8 pieces) as dessert. Not bad! Rob
