I guess you can call my banding successful :)
I was 159.2kg at the start of my optifast prior to surgery - 155kg at surgery (62 bmi) and today I am 57kg, bmi 22 !!!
I was banded 2nd May 2005 and like I said earlier, I had a replacement the following year. I had a symmetrical slippage of the stomach up through the band which was fixed by a replacement and since then have had no problems at all.
I am left with a fair amount of loose skin though, and my first surgery to remove it is on 7th November !!!!

Have a look at the
From Band To Bypass thread
http://au.messages.yahoo.com/lifestyle/lap-band/20 7975
That will give you a little indication (not much) about bypass.

Thanks Julie...it's good to know there may be no extra charge if things go wrong...
I was starting to think that this band would be costing a fortune.
yeh I think i will at the sleeve as an option...'though hopefully I won't have to.
What's your story...is it successful? I hope your OK now. |

grnps,
I was banded at the Avenue by the Prof and needed a second band 18 months later. I had no out of pockets for the Prof or hospital, but I did have to pay about $600 for the aneasthetist.
Not having a gastric by pass means I cant give you my personal experience of any problems - but it is way more radical than lapbanding and the support groups and other groups I have read about bypass show they have huge amounts of issues, mainly malabsorption and malnutrition amongst other problems.
I think the next step to take if banding has not worked, is to think about the sleeve. Sort of inbetween banding and the full-on bypass.

How much does it cost to redo a band?
I am wondering... if people with gastric by pass have as many problems? If the band becomes soo temprimental are we better off going in for gastric by pass? |

Leanne,
Thank you for your support.
I am just writing a short message now on my way out the door for a weekend away. I think I just need to get back to basics (nature) again and think about everything.
I should be back Monday some time. for those having surgery Monday I wish you well.

You can do it, you're probably one of about three on this board who have witnessed my long slog with the band and the trials that have been thrown at me to encourage me to give up.
I'm now proud of my 'commitment' to the band and not giving up because apart from employment and partner it's the only thing I've made a commitment to and stuck with for longer than six months. If I can do it so can you and you are so correct in saying "I just know the alternative of doing nothing and letting this continue is far worse than anything else the doc can dish out", I can totally relate, the alternative of not honouring our commitment to the band is scary. I've been told in relation to my banding journey that I have "the the patience of a saint" and so do you. Hang in there.

Thanks everyone,
I really don't think I have cornered the market on patience or persistence. I just know the alternative of doing nothing and letting this continue is far worse than anything else the doc can dish out.
If I stop thinking that things will eventually work out then I may as well curl up and die now, and frankly I'm just too selfish to do that right now. I want to see my kids have families of their own so I can be the grand ma that sits back and spoils the kids and gloats when my kids realize just how hard it is. LOL

Pyretta,
I can't believe how much trouble you've had with all this. I so hope things get sorted out properly for you soon. I admire your patience and persistence. I think if it had been me I would have given up by now, but you just keep going, and maintaining the faith that things will eventually turn out ok. I really do hope this is the very last time you will need to have surgery, and that your recovery time is quick and painless, and this show will at last be on the road for you.
Healing hugs and thoughts for you. |

damn I swear if I ever meet the lapband fairy I would kick it right in its sparkly little band where the sun dont shine for putting you though all this. I do hope you get a date real soon so you can get this sorted and I hope they replace the lot tubing and all so nothing is left to chance of leaking later on.
enjoy your weekend, you deserve that much

Judy,
damn! I really hope this minute amount will be THE spot for you.
As for me, I have had such a full on day I really haven't had time to think about everything. I'm heading away for the weekend and I'm sure it will all catch up with me then.
My daughter had muck up day, I have my oldest son over for dinner, my middle son is out at his girlfriend's formal so I've been running around all day.

Oh pyretta, I'm so sorry that you have to go through another procedure. Like you, I know the band works when I have the right amount of fill, sooo I'm taking that as a positive even though I've had problem's. There is a light at the end of a very long tunnel for you, and hopefully this WILL be the last problem you encounter.

Well,
I'm back from the Avenue and as I already predicted there was a loss, and it wasn't weight.
2 weeks ago I left the Avenue with 6.5ml in my band and when I went back today to find there was 4.3mls left. Anna topped me back up to 6.5ml, which is actually a bit too much but we both agree it isn't going to last long anyway. I have confirmed the appointment with Paul Burton for next Tuesday and canceled all further appointments with Anna until after the surgery.
They can't find where the leak is until they go in and, as Anna said, the band does work for me when it's working, so I have agreed to have it repaired and give it another try.
I have to say I'm not overly thrilled a bout further surgery, but the alternative of staying this weight, or even gaining more, isn't worth thinking about. I think I am still processing it all.

I was wondering when you were going back for a check. I was supposed to have 7mls but only had 5mls, so back to 7mls and have restriction again. I went back because I had restriction but started losing it around 4 day's later and knowing what restriction is now, I wanted it back!!! Iv'e had a lot of mucking around with my fills and doc is not sure if it is just a miscalculation, or a leak. I have to go back in a week if I lose restriction again. I will be waiting to hear how you go tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you too!!

Oh Fee!!
I honestly hope you don't have a leaky port and that it was something else that cause the fluid level to be different. Fingers crossed that's the case and you can get on with it. How much was missing from the band? Did they give you a fill?
As for me I'm back at the Avenue tomorrow to see how much I have lost in two weeks (and I don't think I'm talking weight). I'll See Paul Burton on Tuesday and find out what course of action he wants to take. As I have said before I want it confirmed where the leak is before they go back in.
I don't think it's the gods punishing us, more like testing us. A lesson we need to learn, but we just don't know what that is yet. it will all come clear eventually.

Hi pyretta,
I was thinking of you today, getting a fill and being told I may have a leaky port. Now, I think we have had our fair share of setbacks and it is time for the god's to punish someone else isn't it??lol.

Judy,
I'm hanging in there, thanks for asking.
Congratulations and you achievements for the past 12 months, you have to be happy with your weight loss, you've averaged what is considered to be the optimal weight loss for keeping it off. I'm sure you feel so much happier with that weight gone. As people keep telling us this is a lifestyle we are now living and you need to be able to "live" a little so don't deny yourself pleasures.
It's a shame my appointment is on the 23rd at the Avenue, so I'll miss catching up with you by one day. Please let me know how you get on, I am very interested to find out.
