Julie,
Unfortunately I don't tan, any sun I get just fades to white. LOL
As for the scarlet patch next to the wound, no it hasn't faded, but it hasn't spread either. Paul had a look at it and the wound this morning when he took the last of the stitches out.
He agrees with me the the right side of the wound seems to have healed very will but is a bit concerned that there is still discharge from the new part of the wound. That coupled with the scarlet color over where he has paced the port has him a little concerned and he has put me on a round of antibiotics. Neither of us know whether it's an infection or sunburn but he's not willing to take any risk and as he said they antibiotics may help with the discharge from the wound.
We'll see how it goes.

Babs,
the first two ports were pretty much in the same place, in through the same wound, the second one was just placed a little lower. This third port though he has had to extend the same port wound a bit longer and put it further toward my side because of the scarring from the infection I had earlier in the year.
It's is only a minor procedure for them, no cutting through the muscle and such so it's usually done in a day unit. In and out of theatre within 1/2 hour or so. I few hours of observation because of the anesthetic and then home. I was operated on around 10:30 am and home around 3pm, and it's about an hours drive.
You'll need to take it easy for a little while, not stretching, lifting or bending for 6 weeks again.
Babs, if it is an ongoing infection it really is safer to have the port removed until it has cleared. It may set your weight loss back a month or two, but hey I've been waiting nearly 14 months for my band/port/fill to be functional. You'll be on the weight ,loss road in no time.
Are you sure your port is on the right? most are centre or left, which is the side the stomach is on.
I wish you well and hope for the best. Please let me know how you get on.

Pyretta, what is the process for the removal of the port? Is it a big procedure and do they replace the port same day but in a different site?
I am sure mine has to go due to ongoing infection with a sinus connection opening up last Friday through a healed sealed wound of 5 weeks! Port on the right yet pain feels on the left in a band following the tubing, which I can feel.
Am I going mad if I refuse removal and just persevere with this using antibiotics and wound packing. I hate hospitals- don't sleep due to PTSD and I don't eat as they cannot cater for gluten and dairy free diets. Scared if port goes. I am in so much turmoil, I have so much pressure and I don't want to take more time off work. |

At 11 my kids had the chore of doing the dishes. One day my mum let slip to my son that I never did the dishes as a child. My son had such a look of glea when his little brain ticked over and he came to me with all earnest and said that being only fair seeing I never had to do dishes as a child it is only fair that he should not have to do them either. I looked him straight in the eyes smiled sweetely and said I never did xbox either. His little face feel and he said "you are just NOT funny mummy" to this day I think that is the best line I ever got over on him hehehehehhe He never tried to use what I did not do to get out of doing something again tho hehehehe

Yes I know, mowing the lawn wasn't such a smart idea, but it really needed it and hubby can't do it because he suffers really badly with hay fever. The kids could, but being 20 and 18 trying to get them to do anything productive around the house is impossible! I have to fight with them just to hang the laundry at the moment.
But I learned my lesson and now am sitting out the back with my lap top watching the weeds blow in the breeze. I have also taken the wound dressing off and I'm letting it air and give a bit of vitamin d ;).
I walked to the chemist this morning (which also doubled as the puppy's walk) and brought 2 new dressings so I can cover it again when I need to. Have to say it looks much better without the dressings.

Jen, I thought the same thing, lawn mowing???????????
Yes... those bands are great and used after tummy tucks etc. You can also get them for back problems. My sister in law used one after her baby was born to support the tummy until it shrank back down to normal size.

Pyretta,
mowing lawn and dog walking....smack you hand!!!!
Don't push yourself, just take it easy until everything is completely healed.
Would you consider a belly belt, I had to have one with my second pregancy, it's like a big elastic rar rar belt and holds your tummy up to stop any strain and in your case stop any unnecessary pulling on the wounds. Just a thought, hope you get some relief soon.
I also put a thick face cloth folded over the waitband of my clothes to stop any rubbing and to cushion things a bit.
Good luck

Mel,
Sorry i wasn't around earlier, got sucked in to watching 2001 yet again. Gets me in every time that film does.
The wound is still gunky to the left and healing to the right. I have a GP appointment tomorrow afternoon for another wound dressing so I'll ask if I can have a piece of gauze over it so it can breathe and forgo the waterproof dressing. I just want something over it so the stitches don't catch on my clothing.
It hasn't been anywhere near as painful today either so I got out for a walk with the dog and even tried mowing the lawn. I gave that up real quick though. A little too ambitious just yet LOL.

Carol,
I am so glad that Frank is coming back, it has been too damn long.
Yes your knee rehab is back to square one but I have no doubt you and Frank will dance in the New Year together. I'm sure that's something you doubted a few short months ago.
So pleased to hear your news.

Hi Pyretta.. hmmm yes , some answers but sound a bit odd to me too, not that I am as knowing re all this subject as u are. Let's just hope all is magnificent now and you go ahead leaps and bounds.
Frank arrives before end of year so all is looking up over here too. My knee progresses very slowly but i do have to remember that the 2nd op actually put me back to Day 1 with rehab. But at least i am getting loads of physio this time and feel more hopeful. I will be over in melb in 1st half of next year as step mum and i need to go thru Dads things. Take care...Carol |

It all sort of makes sense I suppose. I am glad that you are feeling a bit of restriction at least. I figured that packaging tape had to be for something, but it still was odd... why wasn't it taped the other way if they were trying to stop the gravity... who knows.
Well... the main thing is that so far so good and that you are feeling ok.

Well I'm back from Paul with some of my questions answered not that all the answers make sense to me.
The large dressing that was placed over the regular dressing was a support dressing. Because my stomach hangs so low he was concerned about pulling along the incision. Which also explains the 11 ugly blue sutures. They are a line of reenforcement for the incision, the actual wound was closed by dis solvable sutures.
Apparently, when i had the infection after the last port replacement it did a fair bit of internal damage and my ability to heal in that area has been compromised. Combine that with the extra strain of the large stomach and he was/is being extra cautious.
When I asked why he had only given me 5ml after we had discussed 6, he said there was a lot of fluid in the wound and he wasn't sure how much had leaked out during the port replacement so he thought it was safer to just put 5ml in!??? I can tell you that explanation made no sense to me at all, but, because I do have more restriction that I did with the leak I am willing to settle for the 5ml until I have can my "first" fill in four weeks time. He removed 7 of the ugly blue sutures and I go back next Wednesday for the other 6 to be removed.
My port can only be accessed now from my left side. It has been stapled to a plate he has inserted, again because of the effect of the infection and previous port scarring. He felt it and when he moved it I realized it was the port that I thought was an ache in my side since the op. Very strange position but as long as it works I don't care.

Mel,
With all the oozing the wound did yesterday, it broke free of it's dressings last night, MMmm nice, needless to say my bedclothes have all been washed.
I had to wait until this afternoon to have the dressing changed. The nurse said she'd never seen a dressing like it and assumed it was there to give the wound site some sort of support. She did some major cleaning and redressed it with some nice clean white gauze and clear sticky pads. Talk about the slimline model after what I had on there!
Now I just have to keep an eye on it, if it begins oozing again tonight, I'm back to the GP tomorrow for another dressing.
I have eleven large sutures that aren't dissolving, so they will need to be removed whenever. I'm off to Paul on Wednesday with a head full of questions.
