Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Thanks Pyretta and Mel.. we still have quite a few hurdles to overcome as the house sale has again disappeared but its too late to cancel flights now. So the house will stay empty and we hope nothing bad happens like it did once before. The bottom of the US economy is yet to come but we have been dragged thru it for ages now.I remain slightly optimistic but now that we have all the mortgage to pay it sure will make it very hard here. Oh well. mnay are worse off then me..take care and i do hope its all working out better now Pyretta.Carol

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Bella,

If you wounds are dry and closed up when you take the dressings off then they will need no special attention. Just wipe them over gently with clean water and bathe yourself as normal. If you are worried about them at all, a few sterri strips over the top should do the trick. Make sure you let them air to help with healing too. Most of the time the smaller wound will be almost completely healed.

If they are really gooey, surrounded by redness, swollen or hot then make an appointment to see either your surgeon or GP ASAP just to check for infection. I'm sure yours will be fine though.

Having anywhere between 4 and 6 wounds is common I had the port wound plus four other smaller wounds when banded.

Best of luck, but I'm sure you'll be fine.

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Jo,
Sorry to butt in but I could not do optifast as it interfered in with my medications. Because you are not eating your medications are not getting absorbed properly. I was on anti depressants and taking the opti made my life a living hell! I had to stop the opti immediately and I was lucky enough to have a very understanding doctor. I still have to be wary and make sure I am eating enough. My doctor said that this can happen with other meds as well and to be aware

I am due to remove my waterproof dressings early next week. Do I need to buy anything from the chemist to bathe the wounds etc. I am not sure what to expect - i.e will they be totally healed. I would be grateful for any information. In addition to where the port went I have another 4 cuts - I thought that I would only have 2 others.
Many thank in advance Bella

Jo,

The 6th of December sounds fine to me, I have an 18th to attend that night but I'm sure we can spend a few hours together before I have to leave LOL.

Paste away to the Melbourne thread, I know there are others that were looking for something in the area soon.

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Pyretta - then lets make a date!

I'm going to propose Saturday 6th December for a meet up! We could meet at Degani's in Bundoora - where we've been the last couple of times?? Let's say 1.30pm or 2pm??

Just picked this date before it starts to get too hectic before Chrissy. If this date is good for you, we'll paste on Melbourne thread so others can join in

Hi Pyretta,

I posted this on the optifast thread, but then thought i should just post to you as i thought you might know the answer to my query lol.

Is there any specific medication you can't take while doing the VLCD (opitfast) or even if i was doing a different brand of shake?

Thank you
Lauren.

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Jo,

Thanks for the warm thoughts, they do mean a lot and get me though when I'm feeling down. I DO know how much support I have and for that I am forever grateful.

I'd love another catch up before Christmas. I'm meeting with some bandits form Qld in the city next week, it's always fun to meet people for the first time even though I've chatted to them for nearly 3 years!

I'm still free most weekends, hubby has some motorcycling commitments, like the toy run and such so I'd be at lose ends then anyway.

Pick a Date, place and time and you know I'll do my darnedest to get there.

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Barb,

I'm so sorry your port has to come out but I do understand why, not that it makes it any easier. I too would be horrified to wake up with a gaping hole but if it's the best way to heal the wound then I suppose we'd have to get used to the idea.

I have always had a puckering in my port wound, even after the first op. When I lay down it has always sunk almost to my ribs, it's something my daughter has always had a problem with. Now I'm begining to wonder if there hasn't been a problem there the whole time?

As for the material the port is made out of? I was of the understanding that the outer was the same silicone the band was made of, so if I was having an allergic reaction to the port, I'd also be reacting to the band wouldn't I? I don't really know and I will discuss it with the doc when I see him next.

Barb I wish you all the best for today and fingers crossed it's only a port removal.

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Thanks Mel for bumping. Tried to get on last evening but thread had gone!
Port comes out today. He will keep current fluid in and clamp. So at least I will have restriction. New port at my leisure after 6 weeks, hopefully not at bench, desk or bed height which was silly to put at that height.
I am wondering if I have an allergy to suture material which I have heard of before and something as a midwife I always check on before I suture someone but am I allergic to the port material is a question I am now thinking. Does anyone know what material the port is made of and if there are alternatives?
I am scared to wake up and find a gaping big hole as the surgeon has said he will 'debride' which is like a blank cheque! It will heal from underneath, more packing more dressings to buy. I am getting plenty of wound experience in an area I had no intentions to return to. I have only a small area that was a problem, it healed and looked OK, except it was puckered inwards shaped like another navel. Oh well I will find out later today. Not happy Jan but my head is telling me it is the right thig to do. Barb

Hey Pyretta... I am thinking that maybe Julie might have something. I would be making a call about that one tomorrow... you never know. The first one didn't stay put, the 2nd leaked, but had the infection, and now the lack of healing - seems like she might have struck on a thought process that I would follow up if I were you.

Carol,

NEVER feel bad about giving me good news, especially something that good!!!!

WOO HOO! I am so glad you two can finally be together again, you have both been through so much apart that it's safer for both of you to just stick together I think!!!! Don't let him out of your sight again!

You've put a smile on my face.

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Anna,

You sound like you have a fair bit of scar tissue. If there is no redness to the skin I doubt it's an infection, but I also wouldn't rule it out. You may also have a build up of fluid, which sometimes happens when the scar tissue is being created, that can be tested but having a needle inserted, not anywhere on or near the port or tubing, and seeing if they can draw any fluid out.

Mine is a bit different. The new part of the wound just hasn't healed as quickly as it should and with the slight discharge, he's only put me on the antibiotics as a precaution. During the op to put the port in he said there was a lot of fluid in the wound, which is part of the reason he mounted the port as he did.

I'd be getting back to the doc with yours and getting them to have a close look at it, even a GP should be able to tell if he thinks there might be an infection there. Best of luck with it and fingers crossed that it's just a fluid build up that they can alleviate for you.

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Hey Pyretta

I think that my port may be infected as well... i'm on my 4th round of antibiotcs now and while my scar is not weeping anymore, where my port is has this mass of hard sore tissue around it... i'm not sure what it is...

Does this sound familiar to what is happening with you? Do you think that i could have an infection??

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Pyretta,

At least the sore area hasnt spread any further - but what a bummer, I cant tell you how p i ss ed I feel to hear you might have another infection. As you say, whatever is causing the redness, at least the anti biotics can nip it in the bud.

You know, I wonder whether you might be allergic to porty??? Its not totally unknown to be allergic to 'prosthesis' in surgery is it :( Has anyone at the clinic mentioned this to you at all? Just a suggestion. I am outta helful advice - I am just pretty gobsmacked and disappointed at the moment for you.

You know I am not into the witchy stuff, but I am sending you some "healing wishes" - sprinkle them all over that tummy :)

Julie

Re:PYRETTA Reply to this message
Julie,

Unfortunately I don't tan, any sun I get just fades to white. LOL

As for the scarlet patch next to the wound, no it hasn't faded, but it hasn't spread either. Paul had a look at it and the wound this morning when he took the last of the stitches out.

He agrees with me the the right side of the wound seems to have healed very will but is a bit concerned that there is still discharge from the new part of the wound. That coupled with the scarlet color over where he has paced the port has him a little concerned and he has put me on a round of antibiotics. Neither of us know whether it's an infection or sunburn but he's not willing to take any risk and as he said they antibiotics may help with the discharge from the wound.

We'll see how it goes.
