Angie,
Tell your friends and family about gastric bypass which involves major surgery and then they'll likely be more for LapBand. It's great how it's somewhat minimally invasive. Also, removable. And you can be pregnant with the band.
If you have PCOS, getting a band will improve your chances of conception.

Hi guys,
Im 29 and was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 years ago. In Feb this year I was feeling very tired & my doctor was away so went to another doctor and he spotted a lump on my neck & I had to get 3/4 of my thyroid out but im not on any medication for it. I have always struggled with me weight. Im considering Lap Band Surgery & have an appt with a doctor next week although alot of my family/friends are against it. I cant seem to stick to Optislim & feel weak on it. Has anyone tried Sure Slim/Cohen's? thank you

| Well call me stupid but I am just finishing week 2 of 4 weeks optifast, finally got around to reading brochure and checking with Dr and yes I can have Optifast Chocolate Mousse...!!!! Whoo Hoo, still tastes a little 'plastic' like the shakes but really filling, So now I will have Shake for Breakkie, Soup (havent tried it yet) for lunch, 1 cup of veggies for dinner and around 7-30pm mousse for desert. I found at night if I seperate the shake and the veggies by 1-2 hours I seem to last till the morning no worries, hope this helps, Kylie |

Shan,
Nachos are one of the meals that go down too easy as a bandit so don't worry about missing them, you'll just be satisfied on a lot less of them now.
Hang in there.

Thanks Lauren,
I wasn't actually instructed to go on any pre-op diet. I tried 3 times to contact my doctor's office but they must be out. 6 weeks ago I went on my own low carb diet and have lost 10 kgs so far. I was going to do Optifast to get the next 10 kgs but because of blood sugar I find it impossible to only have 3 shakes and veggies.
I do really need to talk to the doctor and he may refer me to his dietician. Because I'm a country patient, I wasn't able to attend the dietician's seminar. I can probably just speak to her on the phone.
Thanks again,

Hi Hinkley
thanks for the post. Im 28, and not feeling too young let me tell you.........lol. Its amazing how many people look at you and assume your a lazy slob when you do everything you can to loose weight but your body and the PCOS are working against you. IT VERY FRUSTRATING as im sure you understand. Glad to hear its all under control now for you and that you have 2 children.
2 days left on OPTI and im really really struggling, i want to eat so badly, not because im hungry but because i know that after Monday i wont be able to have that one last favourite meal (Nachos for me). Sorry to sound whingy but i really am struggling. I have lost 6.8 kgs in 12 days and certainly wouldnt do anything to blow surgery but thats what i feel like doing

Cat,
Having pasta meals of any type low fat what ever isn't what your meant to do when doing the intense stage, esp before surgery.
I would definitely check with your doctor about it.
I find Having a salad at night, which consists of cucumber cherry tomatos and celery (i could probably use a few other veggies but these are my fav) really up lifting,i know this might sound strange and not so desirable but i think they must have alot of antioxidants in them and it really energizes me when doing this stage of the program.
Just trying to help.
Cheers Lauren. |

You must still be young l was diagnosed early 20's and back then they didn't know how to treat PCOS it used to be considered the fat persons disease rather than the weight being a symptom of the disease. l had banding done 8 years ago and my symptoms did become less. After 6 miscarriages and years of fertility treatment the medications that didn't work before the weight loss suddenly worked and resulted in 2 successful pregnancies. In my opinion the banding is a great way to control the PCOS. My OBGYN even wrote a paper on the possibility of banding being used as a treatment for infertility due to PCOS.

And yes, like you, my problem wasn't hair or anything (some people get hairy), it was irregularities.
Also, many docs say that losing weight has the same effect as Metformin. |

There is a thread about thyroid and a seperate one for PCOS but I posted in there and no one really ever replies.
Great to meet someone with both the same conditions! Odd that it's great, but it is.
We have endocrine problems. I also have skin issues - psoriasis. The skin started at 17 when the PCOS did. So yes, I agree that they are linked. When I got really fit and thin, ate healthy (at age 18 for about 12 months), my skin cleared up and I really do think that our conditions can be helped by being in a healthy BMI range and making good food choices.
I don't know my father's side of the family so I'm not sure if its genetic. Most likely!
Oh and another thing: I have seen many PCOS sufferers talk of conceiving after having weight loss surgery. The only other thing to work out would be to find a donor! lol ;) Been single for 2 years now.

Wow you were diagnosed early. I have been on the pill since i was 11 to try to get my monthlys under control but it just never worked. People kept telling me there was nothing wrong with me but i knew there was. Have been on Metformin for 5 years with no real difference to any symptoms. Also was diagnosed in September this year with Hashimotos also. They must be interconnected in some way. There is a family history on my mothers side of lousy thyroid though. Far out.....and i though i was the only one....lol.....just kidding!

Ah Pyretta you are so good at giving comforting words.
Shan - I was diagnosed with PCOS at 17, so we caught it early. A couple years ago when the studies on Metformin showed promising results I tried taking it. The side effects for me are horrendous and don't go away, so I've never been able to stick on it long. My thyroid is an auto-immune version called Hashimoto's. Diagnosed 4 years ago after my divorce. My theory is that the stress of everything caused the symptoms to start up (but I always had the disposition to have the condition).
I'm hopeful the surgery will get my PCOS under control. The thyroid is permanent (my body has attacked my thyroid so I'm on therapy for life).

Shan,
We all go through what you are feeling and it is very normal.
Try and keep yourself busy on the weekend by doing the chores that need to be avoided for the first few weeks post surgery. Change the bedding, catch up on the laundry and ironing, mop the floors, dust, mow the lawns, even wash walls and windows.
If you can get through that list, your a much better person than me Phew!
Best of luck and hang in there, the finish line is in site.

Hi Everyone
Im due for my op on Monday and i have to tell you....im finding this last few days of Opti extremely tiresome. I feel really edgy and like i could crack at any moment. I phoned and spoke with my dietician today and she explained that it was fairly normal and was probably mostly anxiety about waiting for surgery. Im not hungry as such but am really missing the taste and texture of food. I also checked about the Jelly and she said i can have as much of that as i need to. I want this done sooo badly that it seems to be taking forever. Last day at work tomorrow for two weeks though. As long as i keep myself busy on the weekend i will be ok. I have only just started to realise though the magnitude of what i am doing, my life is about to change in the biggest way possible.

Pyretta,
I see...I had forgotten about carbs. I am just so ravenous and my blood sugar low that I was looking at calories (VLCD).
I wasn't given any adice re Optifast. And I've forgotten to call his office. I asked him if he wanted me on it and he acted like he didn't care and when I mentioned Optifast he nodded and said it was great for losing weight due to the low calories.
I've written it on my hand as a "to do" for tomorrow.
My personal goals were to be closer to 100 by surgery time. That's why I've been dieting.

Tania,
If your surgeon hasn't given you any different guidelines then it is the intensive phase that you need to stick to pre op.
The instructions are in the box and on the website. You can have other veggies, like tomatoes, which I must admit was a godsend for me.
It's not easy, and the first few days are the hardest but it does get easier as you go on.
best of luck.

Cat,
I don't have the problem with you having the calories but it's the carbs in the pasta that concern me. The Optifast has a very strict carb count for us to reach and maintain ketosis. Adding extra carbs can throw that balance out of whack, which is probably why the others you refer to were having fish and veggies.
Please check with your surgical team before varying the pre op phase in any way.

Optifast has a website. www.optifast.com.au if you want to browse it.
Remove any spaces.
You are so good to be sticking with it. I find that I'm shaking with blurred vision by 2pm so I have my third shake then and had a tiny low fat dinner.

Hi, today is my first day on Optifast I am having banding in 3 weeks time on 11th December. All my Dr told me was that I need to take optifast for 3 weeks prior to my op.
I am assuming i have to do the intensive stage 3 optifast meals a day and 2 cups of green vegies with 1 teaspoon of oil, Does anyone know if this is correct, or am I allowed to have other food. I am just sticking to the intensive stage diretions that came in the box, so far I had Vanilla Shake for breakfast and lunch and I am going to try the Chocolate for tea tonight with the 2 cups of vegies, Gee I am looking forward to the vegies.
Thanks |
