<<<There has been mentioned of metformin and the experiences of nausea and upset tummies. I for one have this problem with this particular tablet>>>
You need to take Metformin immediately after you have a meal. (Same goes for Diabex XR, which is also Metformin)
Most problems you will encounter revolve around you not taking it properly. |

Unzippin,
apple juice is really good my dietician informed me and there is a fruit juice that is called SmArt Juice. It is low GI and recommended.Hard to find sometimes though unfortunately. I drank alot of cups of teas and the liquid from two minute noodles (minus the noodles). I look back now realising that it actually went really fast going through that stage of it and I found that while I was recouperating I wasn't hungry. That kicked in during mushy stage though. You should speak with your dietician about other liquids that you can have. I had also V8 juices, up and goes, optifast and other liquids that I got from the chemists that were nutrionally good for me and an alternative to optifast.
Good luck |

Thank you so much for bringing this forward Leanne.
I am interested also in the clear fluid stage issue.. I dont drink juices because of the GI factor so what else is availeable... there must be something... oh wait maybe clear broth...ew that would get hard to suffer after a while of constant drinking.... hmmmm I cant think can anyone else. |

Hi there,
There has been mentioned of metformin and the experiences of nausea and upset tummies. I for one have this problem with this particular tablet.
My GP has me now on one called 'Diabex XR' and I do not have this problem any more. So maybe ask about this particular one. I had been taking 4 tablets but I am experimenting in only taking 2 which I started last night along with my insulin, as I would really like to cut down on the number of tablets that I take each night leading upto my banding on the 27th.

Pyretta I am going to see her on the 20th and was hoping to have a list of suggestions to run past her for apoval. I was not sure chicken broth would have enough calories to stop the vomiting from the diaformin ? It took at least 2 weeks for me to stop vomiting with just optifast after I took the diaformin and I really want to avoid vomiting in those first few days if I can.
thanks

applesauce,
Have you asked the dietition for any suggestions? I haven't tried it myself but was told Miso soup was good.
I am definately not a sweet tooth and have had chicken broth that I mad up and beef broth that my mother in law has supplied.
As I'm moving onto the non clear liquids today I'm having a blended beef soup, that was made with the rest of the broth.
It's just a few ideas and I hope other people have more for you.

Can others tell me what they did for the clear fluid phase ? I can not stand vegtable juice and drinking fruit juice without milk will put my sugars thought the roof something I do not need in the first few days after surgery. I know I have to put some calories into me in order to ake diaformin and other medications I neeed. I will only be on clear liquids for 3 days. any suggestions would be great. Oh and NO mushrooms, hate those things ;)

Hi Everyone,
I don't visit the yahoo boards anymore and haven't been on Bandsters much due to some time consuming personal issues so sorry for the delay in answering but pleased to help out- If I can.
Generally once you have diabetes you will always have Diabetes but if, like many here, you have had a significant weight loss it can go into what I would term "a remission" - note MY term. Many factors influence WHY you get Diabetes, two of the main ones being lifestyle and hereditary factors. One you can address one you can't. Increased weight, particularly around your middle contributes to "Insulin resistance" which simply put, is when your insulin has to work extra hard to do its job of helping the glucose -sugar- into your cells. Insulin resistance is a major player in the development of Type 2 Diabetes so when that is improved your Diabetes control improves, often dramatically. The HbA1c or 3 monthly blood glucose average test measures Diabetes control, it is not used to diagnose diabetes. My comments re Diabetic/ diabetes are simply my thoughts of people thinking of themselves as a person FIRST and not condition or "label" The frequency of blood tests is up to the individual doctor. Six monthly is fine with type 2 that is well controlled. Cheers Kazbah-karen |

Hi Ruby
Thanks for that info, it's basically what my G.P. told me except she wants me to have tests quarterly. I think it maybe because every quarter the Medical Centre where my G.P. is has a Diabetes Clinic and it's probably easier for them to call everyone in in every 1/4 instead of some quarterly and some six months.
I have sent an email to Kazbah Karen but I don't know if I have her current address. If I don't hear from her in a couple of days I'll put a message on MSN Bandsters for her to contact me.

The HbA1c is only a monitoring tool which averages out your glucose level over 2-3 months. If your diabetes is uncontrolled you need the test every 3 months once you are under control you need it 6monthly. It is not a test that is use to see if your or not a diabetic.
The "normal" Hba1c is less then 6. That is what non diabetics result would be.
Because your hba1c is less then 6 it does not mean you are no longer diabetic you still have the underlying abnormality which makes your sugar control poor and can result in later life getting uncontrolled again. |

I found Kazbah Karen's (Diabetic Educator) post on Ozband. It is post No. 72284 and she explains that Diabetic is an adjective not a noun and the word "diabetic" describes jelly or jam not people and that a person has diabetes they are not diabetic.

Hi Pyretta,
That's weird, for just over two years I have hovered around the 5.0 mark i.e. 5.0, 5.1 5.2, I have had 8 quarterly tests all fully covered by Medicare and Medicare have approved two years in a row (since the diabetes has been under control) a Yearly Care Plan with two visits to a Diabetes Educator, two with a Podiatrist and one with an Opthamalogist i.e.eye surgeon - all diabetes related medical professionals). I recently had another Care Plan drawn up for the same diabetes Medical Professionals and it has been approved and expires next year.
Every quarter when I have my hba1c levels tested, at the same test I also have my vitamin levels tested i.e. iron, B12 etc to make sure I don't have a deficiency as a result of my banding diet and my hormone levels tested to see if I have started menopause and they are also fully covered by Medicare.
I told my G.P. the last time she was setting up the Diabetes Care Plan that I didn't need a Diabetes Educator any longer because I regularly attended a dietitian and she told me that dietitians are not trained in Diabetes as thoroughly as what Diabetes Educators are and she insisted on me seeing a Diabetes Educator.
I wish Kazbah Karen was around to get her input as she is a Diabetes Educator. She once wrote, on Ozband I think, and I would like to clarify with her that "people are not Diabetics, people have Diabetes, the word Diabetic is used only to describe products like jams, lollies etc," (that's not verbatim only my recall) ever since she told us this I have been confused by it because so many people refer to us as Diabetics. I wish I had remembered this yesterday and I would have asked my G.P. Anyway I think I'll send Karen an email and bring her attention to this thread, hopefully she might give us some input and hers will probably be even different to what we have already heard lol!

My hba1c levels were so low at my last blood test my doctor was sent a notice asking him please explain why he was requesting the test on this patient.
He is no longer permitted to request that particular blood test for me as it is not covered for suspected non diabetics.

(BTW mt result was 5.1) |

Hi There
I was told by my GP once a diabetic always a diabetic, and that it is advisable to have your hba1c(Blood test that you have done) checked every three months. Since being banded four weeks ago I have been off all medication(7 tabs a day), though now that I am introducing other foods I have started back onto one tablet a day. But as I loose more weight I should end up with just diet control
Regards
