Thanks all im glad i could help.
I am so happy a few people have also noted AIG is the way to go.
It took me 2 days to find them and about 40 phone calls to diffrent companys and this was just luck.
I was telling lady at work my problem she doesnt have a band but she said she had used them before in the past. |

Thanks to the person that posted the AIG info.I have also been struggling to get cover for my band. Phoned AIG this afternoon - a couple of minutes speaking to a very pleasant consultant and I was approved for an extra $60. It is great to have this organized and to have peace of mind.

Yep, it is interesting that some insurers won't touch lapbanders while others rate it as a low risk.
So to summarise, you will end up paying an additional fee that covers the pre-existing condition ONLY, plus also the travel insurance.
So I'm pay $60 for my gastric banding coverage, plus $240 for 4 weeks of travel insurance.
Good luck everybody!

AIG is the way to go.
As another bander posted, 10 minutes on their 1800 number and they had approved me. Apparently gastric banding rates low in the pre-existing conditions.
$60 fee to pay them for the seperate coverage and this is provided in conjunction with travel insurance from AIG (as in general travel ins).
So if anyone is concerned, AIG is on the list. If I can be bothered price shopping, I could ring the other companies also.
Thanks!

FYI:
I am with Mutual Community. I cannot get travel insurance due to my gastric banding - that was the only answer given. I have been banded since January. I will now ring AIG! I am against travelling without insurance for any banding trips to hospital, just in case I get food poisoning again and need an injection.
Pretty peeved with Mutual Community.
I travel December 14.
Any other tips and tricks will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Cat |

While it might be good to catch a company up on there policy and conditions i also thought about going this way with covermore but last thing u want to do if anything does go wrong is months or years of legal fighting if they decided to change there mind about the wording and say the text means something else. Most the policys i have read have multiple ways of reading the same 1 line of text.
My cover with AIG says the following
This endorsement confirms that for the following person XXX XXXXXXXXXX
Cover can be provided for the following pre-existing medical condition(s):
Gastric banding;
This decision is based on the countries and dates in your declaration regarding the trip to be insured by
your policy:
Start Date of Cover : 1st February 2010
End Date of Cover: 3rd March 2010
Assessment Number:XXXXXXXXX
Condition Number : 1 Gastric banding
Responses given were as follows
Have you ever had medical or surgical treatment for your obesity? = Yes - surgery ( 2 )
Do you use a machine to assist your breathing while you sleep? = No ( 1 ) |

Sorry, corrcting myself.
its only if you havent seen a doctor within the past 90 days - not six months.
Its illegal for them not to cover you if you fall under their conditions as Ive written below.
Covermore cannot legally assess lapbands on a case by case basis.
Ness please tell me the name of that REP or which area he/she covers.

Hi Ness,
He is giving you the wrong info, aparently hhis own companies product disclosure statement.
Assuming you have not seen a doctor within the past 6 months your lapband comes under conditions they will cover - you dont even have to tell them you have a lapband, its automatically covered if you pay the premium.
check page 8 of their options brochure.
This is under the "Europe, middle east, Asia, UK, SW Pacific and Norfolk Island" section -
"all conditions not specified immediately above or on page 7+ - NO ASSESSMENT REQUIRED".
Lapband is not mentioned therefore you are covered.
Under the America and Africa section -
"all conditions not specified above or on page 7+ - ASSESSMENT REQUIRED".
Lapband is not mentioned, therefore you need an assessment done.
This is their product disclosure statement and they are legally bound to it. They HAVE TO cover you if youre not going to America/Africa and if you havent seen a doctor about your lapband in the past six months.
Ill bet hes from Victoria? I had another rep tell me the same thing, until i challenged it and he was told he was wrong. What is his name? I can send out a nice reminder email.

that included $60 prem for lapband cover
Covermore without band for me was $220
But its worth paying more for the piece of mind |

Well i have great news now
My god how easy was this
Rang http://aigtravel.com.au
Did a over the phone Assestment took like 10 mins
And they approved me for $60 premium .
I even rang them back to confirm and got the same reponse they have a series of questions they asked me about the lapband and it was done.
As a side note they cost about 100 more then cover more for my basic cover but everyone at AIG was really nice and helpfull. |

depends where you told them youre going. Covermore for example wont cover it for america or africa in general (its just too expensive for them in these countries if something goes wrong), but will cover it for everywhere else.
Most insurance companies do the same thing. It depends on the pre existing condition (lap band for example), medical history in regard to it, AND where youre going.

Great news i think i found a company who cover it for people banded less then 12 months ago
http://www.worldnomads.com/policy_wording.aspx?pid =0fc20863f635401c96c8513eb163b77b
I also rang to confirm it.
It Stats in there terms that You are not covered for any claim you make which arises from a pre-existing medical condition suffered by:
You or a member of your travelling party
Then in there Special meanings part of there text it says this what they define a Pre-Existing Medical Condition
Pre-Existing Medical Condition means:
an ongoing medical or dental condition, or related complication you have, the symptoms of which you are aware of, or that is currently being or has been investigated by a medical adviser, dentist or a chiropractor; or
a medical or dental condition for which advice, treatment or medication has been prescribed by one of the people listed in this definition, within 90 days before you purchased your policy; or
pregnancy
So as long as u dont seek advice, treatment or medication for your band for 90 days prior to buying the cover it looks liek its all good.
I rang them and they also confirmed this.
They Count a Band fill as a Treatment and Advice
Lucky for me we leave on the 2nd of Feb 2010 and my appointmen is with Doctor tommorow for my 3rd fill :) so this is 89 days so on my 2nd day in usa i just pay for the 4 week cover i need and its all good:) |
