Hey Oops,
Great to see you today. You are looking good even before your banding :-) I am so pleased to hear you have your date and all is going ahead. I agree with 100% about their support network. I have found it to be fantastic and there is always someone available to help or give advice when needed.
((hugs))

Hi Julie. I am paying for my op via my super and am being banded by Dr. Bessell on 8 November. You can get both of the letters of referal that you need from his office as the first person you see is Dr. Patroney and she is a GP so she can do the GP letter for you and he will do the surgeon letter. He is more expensive than Dr. Leong, and there is a group of people that he requires you to see before he will say yes or no to operating on you (psych, dietician, exercise specialist & practitioner), it's a bit of a drawn out process and about $700 worth of bills for the specialists, but I feel that it's worth every penny because there is such a good support network there, they are all very lovely and happy to help you via email or phone calls inbetween times. If it's of any help to you, I applied for $12,700 (and had it approved) - this will cover the operation, the anestetist and reimburse me for all of the specialist appointments and cover the 6 week check up appointments.
I have heard really good things about Dr. Anderson as a surgeon but I'm pretty sure he's the guy I saw several years ago and he won't operate on non-insured people either. |

Hi Julie
Just so you know my husband went to see Dr Leong and he won't do the op for a self funded patient either cash or using super ( which is what he was wanting to do) He tried other surgeons in Adelaide but the wait list for first appointment was almost as long as he had to wait for his health insurance. So don't be surprised if you get knocked back. Good Luck with it all

| I guess that means you won't have to wait as long hopefully? Mines about 39 and I have no major problems (yet!)..although I hate my weight and have a 15 month old so I never want to hear the words "your mum's fat" coming out of the mouth of other children! My great motivator! Good luck darlin! |

I'm on the Flinders waiting list also. I was told it will be at least 18 months before I get an initial appointment, and well over 3 years for surgery.
So I'm keeping my foot in as many doors as possible. Will be interesting to see what they have to say at the Obesity Clinic at the RAH.
I have severe obstructive sleep apnea, and a BMI of 51. |

| re public list...I'm at flinders medical centre..I just asked my doc and she referred me..there are a couple of surgeons who do it there but my belief is that they cherry pick patients depending upon urgency..so medical need comes first (patients with complications who need surgery)..so you could never get to the end of the list if you just want it done and have no medical issues (ME!). BTW I do think that's more than fair..someone who has sleep apnea, diabetes etc etc needs it first! :-) |

Hi Everyone,
It was lovely to catch up with everyone at the get together and put faces to names. There have been so many new people. I will have to get onto organising the next one soon hehehe.
Zo, it was great to see you, however briefly, the other day. You are looking great too. We must catch up soon. Let me know when you are free to catch up. I don't see you on msn either. Message me on there when you are online. megenie@hotmail.com
Haley, its been ages since I heard from you too. Your wedding must be coming up soon too. How are you going?
How is everyone else going? I will try not to be such a stranger on here. It seems like ages since I have spoken with everyone.

Hi Haley (and everyone else!)
You haven't been on msn - come online and chat with me girl, lots of catching up to do!!!
Dana it was great seeing you (briefly) the other day, we should do coffee soon :) You're looking WONDERFUL!! and I want to learn all your secrets :)
My journey has been slow... I'm up to 6ml in a 12ml band and I'm only now starting to feel it... I'm still sitting on 110kg (10kg loss since start) but I'm hopeful that with my next fill, I'll finally have some restriction :)
How's everyone else travelling? |

Hi Julie
Welcome. Just curious, which public list were you on in Adelaide? I've been told by many of the private surgeons that it is not available on public. I'm going to the RAH Obesity Clinic in Nov. But I have also taken out private cover so I can be done next year.

hi all, new to this so I hope this reaches all and sundry...I am booked in to see Dr Leong as of today late November. I was on the public waiting list but decided I would used my hard earned savings and pay for the operation as I just can't be
stu ffed waiting anymore. I have been busy reading the posts from day one and have found this site full of inspiration and reality checks! I hope to find some support as I start this journey BB (before band)...and perhaps offer some support when I am AB (after Band). all my best ...Julie |

Emmy - that is normal, but be careful. You should still be limiting yourself to smaller portions and whatever you do DO NOT SKIP STAGES
This will stretch the pouch and may move the band and make weight loss hard. The band can be beaten.

Thanks for your replies!
Kerry - I agree! Sounds like you've had a journey and a half with the band! I think that since my last fill I've been testing too much what I can get in! I'm trying hard now to think healthy about everything I put in..... theres only a small space so I want it to be quality food!! Since getting some advise on here 2-3days ago I haven't been sick at all......Great!
Emmy, I also was able to eat very normally after the first month of banding. It really was'nt until my 3rd fill that I had to make big changes in my diet. But my weight loss has been steady so I'm happy with that. Give it time! I'm also very slack with my excerise!! opps
And Haley, yes I also thought I'd be a size 8 in no time!! I had the thought that I could have just joined weight watchers and got to goal weight by now, but the realisation that within 12months I'd be back to were I started is enough to keep me going and be patient with the loss, knowing that its unlikely that I'll regain the weight! I think that the band is doing it's job on my stomach but of course the head hunger doesn't go away that easy! Its just a matter of working out which one is which!!
Good Luck and keep up with good work!!

hi everyone
wow i havent been on for such a long time, theres all new people.
well so far my journey with the band hasnt been the easiest,i definately thought all of a sudden my weight would just FALL OFF,LOL its definately not like that.
ive got 9mls in a 10ml band & i definately feel restriction but not as much as some people have.
ive gone from 125.5kgs to 106kg & i honestly cant tell the difference so its a bit dissapointing.
my surgeon hasnt been the happiest with me,i havent stuck 100% to healthy eating so its my own fault.
i dont regret being banded but it makes me laugh when people think its the easy way out.yeah right.its not easy
anyway just thought id drop in.
good luck to everyone

Hi Sonya and Kerry,
Wow, I didn't realise that there could be such problems.
I have the opposite problem, I don't feel like I have the band at all. I'm only 3 weeks out, but I can nearly eat anything. I'm on mushies, but just about anything goes. It's probably because I haven't had a fill yet. Is this normal?
I hope you both find some way to get around the problems you are having. The band should help to enhance your life, not make you miserable.
Goodluck,
Emmy |

What your saying is true. Your post band diet is completely different and in some ways unhealthy. I've been banded twice now (1st in 2005 & March 2007).
I reckon I could write a book on why NOT to have banding.
I have alot of trouble with fruit and vegies (lettuce etc.) so tend to stay away from them. Fruit is fine is juiced, and vegies if they can be mashed.
I vomit daily. I had a big top up done last week (1ml) and now on fluids only, I can't handle anything more. I even bought up my contraceptive pill!!
Maybe try to go and see a dietician who deals with gastric banding. Dr Leong also sells a book on banding that has recipe's in it, and you can buy similar ones online.
Try to avoid sloppy food. This will go through the band and weight loss won't occur, especially if its high in carbs like spaghetti bol, lasagna, potatoes or one of my favourites tuna mornay.
You really have to just eat normally but small meals, about the size of your palm, and recognise the full feeling and stop. Don't aim on finishing the plate. oh and chew chew chew, and never ever drink with food.
I've been on liquid multi vitamins since my first banding. I also tend to have an UP and Go drink as it has alot of vitamins in it also.
You may find the crackers arent getting small and therefore getting stuck.
Good luck
Kerry

Hi all
Does anyone ever worry about the post band diet. I'm really feeling that my health is going to deteriate. I feel that my diet now is worse than before as I stuggle to eat anything remotely healthy. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough. Still taking my mulit vitamins, still being sick most days. Can't eat any main meals, mostly just crackers and cheese ( and some days not even that!)
Does anyone have a diet or program to follow that will ensure the body isn't missing out on essential nutrients? I've bought 3 or so books but theres no diet plan as such in them.

Hi everyone!
Just reading the last few pages, I've been away for a week.
It was my first day back at work today I think it went okay. I'm very tired though!
Still got the blues - still out of a job, nothing new!
To answer your question tamayles, Dr. Bessel has a bigger gap than most, but you also have other costs besides the gap to consider. It's best to choose the surgeon your most comfortable with, not neccessarily the cheapest.
Good luck!!!

Thanks for b u mping, could not find it for the life of me.
Well I've taken my first step to being banded. I took out private health insurance today. Now I just have to wait 12 months.
Any tips on the gap prices of surgeons would be appreciated.
Banding will be my 2008 christmas present to myself. |
