Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Hi Di,

I think what you are experience - the anxiety about who/who not to tell - is something we all grapple with pre-surgery and also post for a little while. I used to be more concerned about who knew before hand and also immediately post-op. I am still secretive, but honestly after all the hard work and success, I really think they're the idiot if someone takes issue with it. So far I've probably told about 10 close friends and my mother.

Everyone else hears "I'm on a portion control diet and I also eat absolutely no junk food or rubbish anymore". Both those statements are true.

I admire people who can only tell a few, I'm a blabber mouth so I had to tell all my close friends of which there are several.

All the best with your surgery! You are on your way to feeling very, very happy with your decision.

Cat

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Thanks for your feedback Denise and Mermaid,
After reading your comments I also went back through some of the older postings and found a comment from someone who said that they just tell people that they are on a certain calorie diet with exercise and feels that they don't need to tell them that they have the band to help with the rest. This sounds feasible. As it is, I think I've told about 4 people and this could already be too many people (especially in little ole Adelaide). It's not that I feel ashamed of getting medical intervention to help me with my weight loss, I think it's the thought of justifying myself for my actions.

Also, Mermaid I was hoping that you would be able to tell me how much weight you have lost post surgery. Di

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Hi there Di,

I had surgery a year ago, and told only 5 best friends, these are people I trust with my life. Did not tell family, as in children and mum and dad. WHen people are uninformed they are very judgemental, so this is my choice. I have made huge changes in my life as in I go to the gym 5-6 times a week, obviously I eat very differently. I am happy with my choice not to tell anyone I would do the same again. I really couldnt be bothered justifying what I have done this to all and sundry. Their are some people I would luv to share the real story with as in those struggling with their weight issues, maybe in the future when I am ready.

Others would not agree but it is each to their own,

Mermaid

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Hi Di,
Ive had friends respond to me with negative comments too. But i just think they dont want me to be smaller than them lol. I think they have got so used to seeing me a big person. But i am doing this for ME and ME alone, i want to live a ripe old age, so i dont take any notice of what people say. But your true friends will encourage you through your journey and have up lifting comments and even help you through it. I didnt have a problem telling people what i was doing because they could see that i was doing something about my weight problem. you never know, just by telling people what you are doing may even help them to make the same choice if they are big and need help. Good luck with everything
Cheers
Denise

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Thanks Denise. I really am looking forward to the start of my new life and I wish you all the best with yours. I am a little confused about one thing and that is about telling friends and curious acquaintenances about what i've done (or what i'm about to do). I've found that some people are really negative about the whole procedure. I would love to hear from other bandits (or bandits to be) about how they are dealing with this. Di

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Hi there Di and Debbie,
Congrats on getting banded, how exciting for you both. I was banded on the 4th of may, at the time i wasnt so happy, the pain wasnt nice at all but im a woosa. I have since lost 10kg and it hasnt been 2 weeks yet so im rapt. You mention the "feeling full" well i have not felt hungry since my op, not at all. I do get hunger pains but i dont feel hungry, i know it sounds weird but for me that how it is. Mind you everyone is different. Im still not drinking all the liquid the dietitan wants me too but i get to full and cant fit it in. I had my band done at wakefield and they are fantastic and so caring. Only one complaint, you dont get much sleep the night following the op, they keep coming in every hour to do obs, and all you want is to sleep lol. Anyway good luck for you big day. Its the start of your new life. Congratulations

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Hi Debbie. Yes, my surgeon is Dr Anderson. I'll definitely look for you at the hospital when I get there. My sister had Dr Bissell at the Wakefield. She tells me that she really does not feel hungry at those times of the day when she would have been snacking and that when she does eat she feels full quite quickly. These are the things that I struggle to understand (ie feeling full and not snacking, I can't remember what that feels like). From all the different resources I've read there does seem to be a lot of different experiences (some not so good) but in the end they still achieve weight loss. I can't wait to be the new me. Di

Hi Di Great to hear from you. Is your surgeon Dr Anderson? Maybe we will see each other if I am going in on the 30/7/09 and you the 31/7/09. Your sister sounds as if she's doing really well. It's hard to know in what way the lapband experience will be as it seems different for everyone but alot of people lose heaps of weight and wished they had done it years ago!!

hi ladies, My name is Di. i had my first appointment with Dr Jaeger on 11/5/09 at the Ashford Specialist Centre. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a surgery date booked for 31/7/09. I feel a little nervous but I am aslo really excited. My sister was banded in March this year and is doing really well - 20kgs to date. She looks great. I can't wait to start receiving compliments.

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
hi debbie, thanks for replying. wow 40kg! thats fantastic. my goal is 35kg. will me more than happy with that. dont really know anyone thats had it done. my mum had stapling done about 12 years ago and still suffers the effects. constant vomiting, not nice. but from what i hear lap banding is much safer and different from that. ive only ever had one op before and that was when i was 15, so im getting quite anxious! sure all will be fine though. ill have mine done first and can tell you all about it :)

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Hi again Lia, I had first appointment on the 31st March with Dr Anderson offsider Dr Jaeger at the Southern Specialist Centre. I had another one a month later with Dr Jaeger and the next one is with Dr Anderson in May. I just said that I would like to go to Ashford, but I know that you have a choice between Flinders Private and Ashford. I was booked in at my first appointment for the 30th July. I am really nervous as well because I have never had an op b4
My friend had a Lapband 2 years ago now and she has lost about 40kg and looks really good so I use her as an inspiration.

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
hi debbie! thanks for your reply. i've got an appointment to see dr.anderson on 28th of may, however apparently the actual surgeon doing mine is another doctor, michael francs or something along those lines. im having it done at flinders private. i wonder why yours is at ashford? if you dont mind me asking, how long have you been waiting for the surgery? when was your intial consult? i ask because im suprised at how quick everthing moves along. i had my first appointment at ashford with steve sabine 2 weeks ago, and was booked in straight away for early july. i've heard of people having to wait for months and months! not that im complaining! the sooner the better really. although i must admit im a bit nervous.
would be great to keep in touch. regards, Lia

Hi Sue,
Im not real sure where stepney is, im at Noarlunga so not to sure how far away it is but will check out the map. At the moment im not feeling to well to go anywhere, i ended up back in hospital yesterday. I was put on the drip for a few hours i was very dehydrated and was vomiting. Day 5 wasnt a good day for me, but today im feeling 100% on yesterday. How long do these really bad hunger pains last? and im not even hungry, but the hunger pains are much worse than the surgery pain, but im on the mend yay!!
Cheers

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Hi Denise,
Glad you're feeling a little better today - I reckon once you have some pain relief you'll feel even better. I had a mixture of liquids (as I said 100mls at a time) like prune juice, tomato juice, milo, diluted oj, water, different homemade soups, icecream, small tubs of Pauls Custard, optifast and the dietician suggested sustegan which I didn't like. Benefibre daily dissolved for constipation.
I didn't have trouble with milk. I remember nanna napping a lot eg one hour up, one hour sleeping and napping gradually got lesser. Hope this helps you and try and do things that are for you when you are able - I sat out in the sun daily! We are here for you when needed.

Re:Adelaide Banding Reply to this message
Hi Denise,
It is very important that you keep up your fluids, just sip all day, little sips at a time but constantly. Also take pain medication there is no need to be in pain thats what the medication is for.
I found that juice mixed with water was good, Berrocca in a 500ml bottle of water was good too.
The solulable pain relief is a great idea as suggested.
Good luck with it all, keep reading the boards as there is a wealth of information on here and everyone is lovely and will answer all your questions.
All the very best
Brelly
