Hi Helene,
I had a gstric sleeve nearly 4 weeks ago & have already lost just over 20 kgs. I feel great now, was seriously worried about my health before, the diabetes has disappeared and no more swollen ankles! Dr. Michael France was the Doctor, he's brilliant! Good luck with whatever you choose, I'm more than happy with my choice. Hyacinth. |

Helene,
I'm not trying to persuade you, but honestly my thinking was that the lapband is less invasive and I wanted to try this first before thinking of the permanent options. The permanent options seem to work fantastically and have less mechanical failures than the lapband, but the lapband surgery is keyhole and has an very low morbidity rate (as comapred with the permanent options, such as sleeving, bypass, etc).
All the best in your decision,
Cat |

| Hi Debbie, I'm not sure if the 2mls of saline at time of operation is usual for all surgeons but I think Dr Anderson has been doing the bands for so long now that he has his own ideas about it all. Also I was on fluids for 2 weeks, and mushies for one week and then onto real food. My first fill was done about 2 and 1/2 weeks post op which seems earlier than some of the other surgeons. I have heard great things about lots of the surgeons doing lap banding but I knew of Dr Anderson through my nursing and I liked the idea that he is a member of 'Surgeons without borders' and he is also involved in building a hospital in Africa...the Hospital of Hope. Just seems like a really great human being! His anaesthetist is lovely too which is a nice bonus! All the best, Nicolle X |

Hi Bella
I was banded by Prof Toouli last December, with no post-op problems- I think he and his team are great. The Prof is gentle man who cares for his patients as if they were family.
I don't think you will have any problems establishing a sound patient/doctor relationship
Kind regards

Hi Nicolle, I did have reservations about Dr Anderson because my friend was banded by Dr Kow and another by Prof Toouli but Dr Anderson's clinic is closer to me so I chose him and it's great to hear that someone had a positive outcome with him. I didn't realise that they put saline in at the time of the operation, is that normal? You sound like you are going great guns (stupid saying) Also about telling people about being banded, I have told friends and family and so far no negative comments. They know I have to lose weight as I have Diabetes and life just gets harder and harder. I am hoping with the lapband that life will get easier and easier.

| Hi, this is a posting looking for info. I have been visiting this site daily for weeks, reading the comments with keen interest. Banding versus sleeving but does anyone out there have any experience or knowledge of gastric ballooning as in theory it seems a better option? Less invasive etc. I had a consult at Flinders but came away less than confident. |

Hi Nicolle
Thanks for the post op tip. My surgery is also booked for a Friday so probably the same thing will apply regarding the dietician. Thanks.

Hi Mermaid
What a great weightloss. I have a sister who is short and carrying excess weight. She is also considering a lapband. Unfortunately, when you are short you can't get away with a lot of excess weight. Congratulations on your success and thanks for sharing your weightloss story. Di |

| Hi Lia, I was in hospital just overnight and that was fine. They send you to the High dependency Unit post op to monitor your breathing so you might want to let your family know so that they don't panic. I was fine after one week but it was good to have the 2 weeks off. I did get quite sleepy on and off so after a couple of days of mostly resting, I would potter around a bit and then have a Nanna nap or lie in bed reading etc. The soreness felt like a tummy work out at the gym, so for me it was sore but not awful. The shoulder tip pain can be yucky so hot packs are a great thing to have ready. Feel free to ask any more questions. You are in good hands in my humble opinion :) Nicolle X |

| Hi Di, my op was on a Friday so the dietician left a book for me to read, as I didn't get to see her. She doesn't come in on a Saturday. If your operation is on another day, the dietician will come the day of discharge. The book was very easy to understand though.I was in hospital just overnight which was fine. You might like to tell your family that it is routine to go to the High Dependency Unit post op to monitor your breathing. As far as fitness etc goes it hasn't been mentioned to me so I guess they leave it up to us. All the best for your op. Regards, Nicolle |

Hi there Di,
I have lost 31 kgs, I was 97.4 to start with, lots of people have already made the comment that I was not a real heavy weight anyway, but I am five ft 2 inches, so I am a shortie anyways. I am now about 66kgs and a size 11 to 12, feel great here, and have no need to lose anymore weight. I am trying to maintain now and that has a few issues but will get there in the end.
Take care and good luck on your own personal journey, we are all here to support each other,

Hi Nicolle,
Thanks for your feedback. Congratulations on your success so far. There is something I would like to ask you seeing as you had Dr Anderson at the Ashrod and that is, what happens post surgery regarding dieticians/nutritionalist s and fitness. Does he have people that come and see you or you go and see? I have only had my initial appointment at this stage so he might enlighten me when I have an appointment with him but I thought I would ask you seeing as you have just done it.
Cheers,
Di |

Hi Cat,
Thanks for your comments. I think I will go down the track of telling only close family and friends. If however, someone says they are considering lapbanding themselves then I would be willing to share what I know. Thanks for your well wishes. I can't wait.

| Hi Di, I have told everyone about my lap band. My family and friends have known my ups and downs with diets over the years and apart from the odd surprise that I would be considered (my BMI was only 34) the comments have all been OK. I just explain that it is a health issue for me. I do not want to develop any obesity related illnesses and I want to be full of energy for my young family. I have huge issues with will power so I also explain that it is a great tool that will enable me to not only lose weight but to maintain that weight loss in years to come. As mentioned before though, it is a very individualised choice. Nicolle X |

Hi Lia and Debbie,
I had my Lap band on 24th April at Ashford by Dr Anderson and it went brilliantly. I had a great recovery and I had my first fill last Wednesday which was painless. He is so experienced and the GP's that work with him are wonderful too. I have lost 10kgs so far. Let me know if you have any questions. I had 2 weeks of fluids, a week of mushies and then on to food 3 days after my first fill. Dr Anderson put 2mls of saline in at the time of operation and I had a further 4mls put in last Wednesday. It has all been incredibly positive for me so far. All the best. Nicolle X |

Hi Di,
I think what you are experience - the anxiety about who/who not to tell - is something we all grapple with pre-surgery and also post for a little while. I used to be more concerned about who knew before hand and also immediately post-op. I am still secretive, but honestly after all the hard work and success, I really think they're the idiot if someone takes issue with it. So far I've probably told about 10 close friends and my mother.
Everyone else hears "I'm on a portion control diet and I also eat absolutely no junk food or rubbish anymore". Both those statements are true.
I admire people who can only tell a few, I'm a blabber mouth so I had to tell all my close friends of which there are several.
All the best with your surgery! You are on your way to feeling very, very happy with your decision.

Thanks for your feedback Denise and Mermaid,
After reading your comments I also went back through some of the older postings and found a comment from someone who said that they just tell people that they are on a certain calorie diet with exercise and feels that they don't need to tell them that they have the band to help with the rest. This sounds feasible. As it is, I think I've told about 4 people and this could already be too many people (especially in little ole Adelaide). It's not that I feel ashamed of getting medical intervention to help me with my weight loss, I think it's the thought of justifying myself for my actions.
Also, Mermaid I was hoping that you would be able to tell me how much weight you have lost post surgery. Di |

Hi there Di,
I had surgery a year ago, and told only 5 best friends, these are people I trust with my life. Did not tell family, as in children and mum and dad. WHen people are uninformed they are very judgemental, so this is my choice. I have made huge changes in my life as in I go to the gym 5-6 times a week, obviously I eat very differently. I am happy with my choice not to tell anyone I would do the same again. I really couldnt be bothered justifying what I have done this to all and sundry. Their are some people I would luv to share the real story with as in those struggling with their weight issues, maybe in the future when I am ready.
Others would not agree but it is each to their own,

Hi Di,
Ive had friends respond to me with negative comments too. But i just think they dont want me to be smaller than them lol. I think they have got so used to seeing me a big person. But i am doing this for ME and ME alone, i want to live a ripe old age, so i dont take any notice of what people say. But your true friends will encourage you through your journey and have up lifting comments and even help you through it. I didnt have a problem telling people what i was doing because they could see that i was doing something about my weight problem. you never know, just by telling people what you are doing may even help them to make the same choice if they are big and need help. Good luck with everything
Cheers

| Thanks Denise. I really am looking forward to the start of my new life and I wish you all the best with yours. I am a little confused about one thing and that is about telling friends and curious acquaintenances about what i've done (or what i'm about to do). I've found that some people are really negative about the whole procedure. I would love to hear from other bandits (or bandits to be) about how they are dealing with this. Di |

Hi there Di and Debbie,
Congrats on getting banded, how exciting for you both. I was banded on the 4th of may, at the time i wasnt so happy, the pain wasnt nice at all but im a woosa. I have since lost 10kg and it hasnt been 2 weeks yet so im rapt. You mention the "feeling full" well i have not felt hungry since my op, not at all. I do get hunger pains but i dont feel hungry, i know it sounds weird but for me that how it is. Mind you everyone is different. Im still not drinking all the liquid the dietitan wants me too but i get to full and cant fit it in. I had my band done at wakefield and they are fantastic and so caring. Only one complaint, you dont get much sleep the night following the op, they keep coming in every hour to do obs, and all you want is to sleep lol. Anyway good luck for you big day. Its the start of your new life. Congratulations |
