Katy, my husband suggested that you call the recruiting centre on 131 901 and ask them as they would have an idea on weather or not the band will make a difference and if you will be able to join or not. Also, I went through Mr Leong and he was great I can highly recommend him too. I heard he is $1,600 now but that's all it costs for the operation no other fees apart from your consultation $20 out of pocket. Jellybean xx
Hi Cat, hows it going with your new friend?? Are you coping well and have things settled down? Jellybean xx |

Katy,
I've been told that the more popular surgeons have a long waiting list. Mine doesn't. I've been happy with him so far and he has an awesome dietician, Penny.
Dr Leong - 8267-4177
He charges a lot less than Lilian Kow. $1500. I researched it before I had my op. He also has a thread on here.
Hope that helps,
Cat |

hi there, sorry if this subject has been done to death, but I got a referral to lillian Kow and phoned and they won't even do an initial consult until April,Is it normal to wait so long.Having made the decision I want to get started NOW.....
My GP doesn't really mind who I see, so if someone else will see me sooner I can get the referral changed.
thanks |

Hi Sarah. Dr Anderson told me that I can't eat meat in the shape of steak or roasts because they are too dry and will get stuck. I am allowed to eat casseroles, stews, mince, chicken thigh meat with sauces/gravies (breast meat is too dry), or fish but not meat.
I am not having any problems with this although I do miss a good roast. I did try a little of my mums roast which is extremely tender and with heaps of gravy and in tiny wee amounts. This worked fine as I chewed and chewed so it was no problem. However I avoid all dry foods or add lots of sauce.
I have also learned to chew everything until it is truly dead! Something I never used to do - it was always get it in fast and chew 2-3 times and swallow so I have changed my habits. Dr Anderson has also said no pastry, cakes, biscuits (refined flour)pasta, rice and white bread. I find that the rye breads work well for me when toasted but soft white is out.
I still haven't thrown up (and that is a BIG WHOOPEE for me cos I am terrified of throwing up) but I forgot once what I was doing and grabbed a piece of chicken breast and it got stuck. That'll teach me - no meat which is dry.
I don't know if this helps but it is working for me! ps - what were you doing up at 1239 in the am? That isn't even sparrow fart! Fiona. |

Hi everyone!
Having a slight issue, I'm doing pretty good for breakfast with my special k, and lunch i'v been having dry biscuits with chicken and bits and pieces, and yogurt and fruit, but my trouble is when i come to dinner time. Meat keeps getting stuck no matter what i try and even brocolli and cauliflower are! Seems strange. Anyone else had or having trouble like this? Its like i get to tea and my band tightens up. Kinda frustrating. Any advice would be great! I'm sick of getting my tea stuck!
Cheers, Sarah :) |

Hi all and Happy New Year! I have had the most hectic Christmas and New Year, I flew to NZ and (bugger it) I still don't fit into the seats properly! Big bum hard to move!
I have my second fill on the 22nd of Jan and my first weigh since the first fill. I don't own a set of scales which may or may not be a bad thing - who knows! I am having problems with one pair of pants now - they won't stay up! Now there's a problem I can live with.
Gingerr1978 I live south too so if you set up a meeting down this way I will try and pluck up the courage to come along. Keep us posted on that. To everyone who has lost weight (regardless of the amount) congratulations cos every little bit counts. Fiona |

Hi Donna,
Really enjoyed the get-together the other night - thanks so much! Everyone was so friendly and warm, and willing to share their experiences. Would have loved to have been able to talk to everybody!
The countdown to 23/01 is well underway - I seem to have times when I feel absolutely sick with nerves, then periods of feeling almost high with excitement of what's to come after the op. Does everyone go through this?
I called the ABC at Flinders today and they were lovely. If anyone has had any probs with their admin side of things (I have - appointments made for me that I didn't know about, or at Flinders instead of Calvary, etc etc ...), they seem to have had some staff shortages which they're in the process of fixing. Also spoke to one of the bariatric theatre nurses and she was very informative and helpful - even offered to go with me into theatre on THE day,
although she is based at Flinders!
Struggling with the Optislop but after the meeting the other night I think I need to try another flavour.
Oops this is getting a bit long! Thanks everyone who was kind enough to share their experiences with me - much appreciated - the terror level has gone down a few notches.

| Hi Sonia, I can also recommend Mr Leong at Salisbury. He did my surgery 4 weeks ago and the cost was very reasonable. Not sure if you want to look into it or not but good luck with it all and yes it's definately worth it!! |

Hi Sonia,
It is a daunting thought, and you will go through so many emotions throughout the whole journey. I remember even shedding a few tears in the holding bay before I went in for my surgery cos I was thinking "am I really doing this and should I be??" But, honestly, once you are over the surgery (which isn't really too bad) I find the impact the band has on my life really isn't that big at all! Sometimes you forget about it cos it just becomes normal. Its a fabulous tool and has really helped me a lot.
I don't think I am related to Maria. Well, I know a few elderly Maria Belperios but do you mean a younger person? I married a Belperio but am actually now separated.

Hi Serinajoy,
Thats exactly why, so you don't ruin the work the band is doing by washing the food through it. I think a sip or 2 of water wouldn't hurt to wet your mouth etc.

Hi there
I think it is so you don't 'wash' your food through the band too quickly with the liquid from a drink? |

Hi Sonia, as Lisa said, the biggest thing you need is private health. If you dont have it, you will need it for minimum 12 months before you can have the procedure done. There are quite a few surgeons around who do the surgery, each have their pros ands cons. From what I understand Dr Leong leaves you a little more up to your own devices, whereas Dr Bessell is a little more into the whole team approach, with the dietician, psychologist, exercis therapist and bariatric physician. Personally, I love Dr Bessell's team, Dr Helen Patroney is who i mostly see there, she is a bariatric physician and assits with surgery, and does fills etc and she is so lovely. It is a bit of a long road, lots of preparation, but in the end it is totally worth it!!!
I went to see Dr Patroney today and got another 0.6ml fill, taking me up to 5.6ml now. I can already feel the difference which is great. I shall see how I go!
Cheers, Sarah :) |

Hi Sonia,
When I made the decision to look into banding I rang a Health Fund made sure I'd be covered. Checked with my doctor to make sure he thought it was "medically necessary" and then googled adelaide lap band surgeons.
I chose Mr. Paul Leong at North Adelaide and made an appointment to go see him, found out what was involved, costs, hospital stay, all I wanted answered he answered. Twelve months later I got banded,(last March) I'm now over 30kg lighter.
Good Luck.
Lisa. |

Hi everyone! I haven't been around for quite a while but thought I would pop in and say hi. I got banded last June by Dr Bessell but it has been a very tumultuous time since then for me. I have only dropped 15kg, which I am not thrilled about, but in September I found out that my husband of only 11 months had been cheating on me and we have separated. It has been a very up and down ride for me since then, at the time when I needed support the most, I found myself in a very difficult position emotionally. That is why I have found myself back here! I need some support and motivation to keep me going! I so desperately want to lose this weight and nothing is going to stop me! I started out at 128kg on banding day and currently sit at 113kg, and while I'm glad that is 15kg I will never see again, I wish it were more! I have struggled to find my sweet spot, around the time of my separation I couldn't get anything down, and everything was getting stuck, I think the stress was making eating almost impossible so I had fill taken out and now that I've settled myself down, I'm finding I'm not satisfied and hungry! So I've had one fill, but am going back for another tomorrow. Dr Patroney at Dr Bessell's practice is fantastic and has been so lovely throughout this time for me. So supportive.
I'm planning on going on a cruise in August, so I really want to have lost a fair chunk of weight be then! If I can get down around 85kg I will be over the moon! So I have about 30kg to lose by then! I really want to show my husband what he is missing out on!!! Ha ha ha!
Keep smiling guys, Cheers, Sarah :) |
